Ground movements can arise from a large number of sources and can have a significant effect on nearby piles and deep foundations. The loading of the piles by ground movements is a different mechanism to that arising from direct applied loading to the pile head, and consequently it is not generally possible to adequately analyze the effects of ground movements simply by applying some type of equivalent loading to the pile head. The main effects of ground movements are the development of additional movements, axial forces and bending moments in the piles, and thus the key design aspects are related to movements and to the structural integrity of the pile. However, the ultimate geotechnical load carrying capacity is generally not affected by the ground movements themselves. This paper will describe an approach to the analysis of ground movement effects on piles, considering axial and lateral movements separately. Some of the main features of pile response will be discussed for three specific problems involving ground movements: piles near and within embankments, piles near an excavation for a pile cap, and piles subjected to seismic ground motions.

Douglas (Dept. of Scientific and lndustrial Re-search, Warren Spring Laboratory, Hertfordshire, England) — The authors are to be congratulated on the considerable improvements they have made in tailoring efficiency and selectivity terms which are generally superior to the alternative forms in current use. However, I feel that their efficiency expression is limited to lower-grade feeds; its accuracy reduces as the feed grade increases. For example, its application to such processes as the beneficiation of glass sands, refractories and clays will invoIve considerable inaccuracies. The reason for this lies in the direct use of recovery, which, with high-grade feeds, biases their empirical expression, R(1 - c/h). With a 90% grade feed, the recovery weighting for the slightest degree of beneficiation, over a zero efficiency sampling operation, will be 90+%+ I disagree with their second basic requirement which states that there can be no fundamental basis for any single quantifying expression. A formula giving a comprehensive representation of concentra- tion efficiency can be derived fundamentally accord-to the procedure outlined in the literature. "Industry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has adopted a practice of leach operation using a defined pH or gpl acid in the raffinate based on the column test program. The acid consumption can be easily calculated using the leach operating parameters of SX-EW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate. The column leach test results and a column to heap efficiency factor are used to define the copper extraction. The maximum acid consumption will occur when zero acid is contained in the raffinate. The term Net Extracted Value (NEV) is to define the maximum extracted value relative to acid consumed.This paper presents the operating logic and method used to calculate acid consumption based on column tests and operating parameters.INTRODUCTIONIndustry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. This may result in lower economic value if the tests are not designed to account for operating variables. A test program is described to assist in defining lift height and the influence of gangue on solution chemistry. A simple spreadsheet is presented that will use the leach operating parameters of SXEW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate to calculate the acid consumption for a proposed operation.A review of current leach operations solution chemistry will help to define acid consumption. This is recommended for all current leach operations.DISCUSSIONThe current practice at Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) is the use of column test results to define operating parameters. The monitoring of operational solution chemistry and copper production addresses any changes needed in operational parameters. This practice maximizes the value extracted from each tonne of ore leached."

The Wharekirauponga (WKP) epithermal gold-silver deposit is located about 10 km north of Waihi in the Hauraki Goldfield east of Auckland. WKP is notable for its sheeted to stockwork quartz veins hosted in rhyolitic rocks, that have attracted exploration interest as a low grade, bulk tonnage exploration target. Exploration between 1978 and 1993 included 23 diamond drill holes totalling 5505 m. The mineralisation occurs in a rhyolite dome complex (Miocene), consisting of flow-banded rhyolite and rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks, with minor andesite. Fifty four drill core samples were collected from six exploration drill holes and analysed by semiquantitative XRD techniques. Hydrothermal alteration of the rhyolitic and andesitic rocks has developed secondary mineral assemblages of quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, illite, sericite, interlayered illite-smectite, carbonate, halloysite and pyrite. The main zone of mineralisation is characterised by quartzadularia alteration, which grades oiItward to quartz-clay (illite, local halloysite and/or interlayered illite-smectite) alteration. Propylitic alteration is present at the southern end of the drilled area of the prospect. Depth-related changes in mineralogy include a decrease in illite and appearance and increase in quantity of chlorite with increasing depth, and the localisation of halloysite and interlayered illite-smectite in the shallow parts of some drill holes.

The development and use of rock mass classification tools have been a key component for improving stope design over the past 4 years at the Xstrata Zinc George Fisher Mine in northern Queensland, Australia. In 2003, stope extraction data from 3 years of open-stope mining provided an excellent situation to review the assumptions in the feasibility study. Extracted stope profile information, drillhole geotechnical data, underground observations, and oral and written communication were used to develop a thorough stope reconciliation performance database. With-out collecting the back analysis data and presenting the data in a usable format, engineers are left to debate opinion instead of engineered judgment. This can lead to biased and uninformed design parameter choices with the potential to repeat poor design. This paper demonstrates some effective, practical examples of empirical data collection where rock mass classifications tools were developed and used to create improved confidence in predicting stope stability and failure profiles. The work contributed to design changes that resulted in a reduction in stope hangingwall dilution and an increase in head grade while continuing to ramp up production from 2003–2005.

Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Gregory H. Boyce will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Boyce, chairman and chief executive office of Peabody Energy, is being honored for his leadership in the coal industry.

This report documents-the process of literature review, site selection, instrument installation, data acquisition, and preliminary data reduction performed to evaluate the influence of rock mass discontinuities on coal mine subsidence. A system of surface, subsurface and mine level instrumentation was installed at the Armco No. 7 Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia where the overburden varied in thickness from 630 to 1040 feet. Survey monuments, borehole pressure cells, full profile borehole inclinometer-extensometers, mine level extensometers, stressmeters and tape extensometer convergence stations were installed to monitor displacements and stress changes. Final design of the instrumentation system was based on: a) review of available information, b) field mapping and analysis of areal photography, c) drilling, and d) borehole geophysics. The report contains the complete graphed data of stress and displacements accompanying the longwall mining of a 4800 ft long by 480 ft wide coal panel.

Dennis Millgard introduced the Session by hoping that participants to the Conference would also share their piling problems. He then invited the first speaker to present his paper. Paper 5.1. Pat Kelleher commenced by saying that he belonged to a one hundred year old firm that had experience in the New York Harbour area. They were often asked to assess the integrity of many waterside structures such as piers, walls, and docks which were deteriorating whilst still in use. The earliest structures, built in the 1800's, were on timber piles. These have now changed to Steel H and tube piles and concrete piles. Usually they were called in when the structure was showing signs of distress, or had reached the end of its life but could not be closed. In particular, they had found that marine borers had returned to New York Harbour because of the improved quality of the water. There is now a far greater incidence of attack on the timber piles than when the water was polluted. Repair is usually carried out by encapsulating the pile within the tidal range of about -2ft to +8ft (-0.6 to +2.4m). Reinforced concrete forms, reinforced fibre jackets, or nylon bags are used. Reinforced fibre jackets are used with a protective coat on the pile, while nylon bags prove the cheapest method.

The paper describes a mineral potential mapping of gold and other base metals in Mahneshan area, Iran, using geographical information system (GIS), in which, the method of weights of evidence is used to combine spatial data obtained from different sources to make prediction for mineral potential. This is a quantitative tool for mineral resource mapping that can be used to delineate and predict favorable areas for further exploration by using the characteristics of known and similar mineral deposits. In accord with the descriptive model for gold and other base metal deposits, the spatial distribution of 20 known mineral occurrences was used. In addition, digital evidential maps were used in this study. The maps include maps of lithological units, faults and first derivative of total aeromagnetic data, remotely-sensing data of alteration and also geochemical evidential maps produced on the basis of the results of chemical analyses of samples taken from the stream sediments in the area, and analysed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb, As, Ag, Au, Ba and Hg elements. The binary maps were produced and then combined with the model of weights of evidence using 20 known mineral occurrences to obtain a final map of the favourable areas for further exploration of gold and other base metals in the study area. The final map is a predictive GIS model of the mineral deposits in the area. An interesting matter about the final predictive GIS model is that the faults are mainly located in favorable areas which possesses the most probability of mineralisation. Therefore, the faults in these areas have priority for further exploration of gold and others base metals.

Computer assisted finite element model analysis, originally developed to study stress distributions in aircraft, has been modified into a versatile mining program, that can be used to assist the engineer with predictions of mine subsidence. International Exploration, Inc. has developed an in-house finite element model program which incorporates a multitude of factors influencing mine subsidence such as mine design, physical rock properties, structure, faults, joints and topography. Finite element analysis of a mine model can mathematically determine the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses within each of the elements forming the model. By comparing the calculated in-situ stresses to the actual rock strengths, high risk regions within a mine can be identified. These potentially unstable regions of the mine can be allowed to fail within the model and the resultant stress redistribution and element movement calculated. Thus, the effects of the mine collapse at the surface can be predicted for the purpose of determining the potential damage, if any, that could occur to surface structures from deep mine failure. Stabilization materials can also be mathematically inserted into the model to design and analyze the effectiveness of subsidence prevention programs. Two examples are presented of the finite element program being used to predict mine subsidence at substantially different geologic and mining provinces in Pennsylvania.

W. W. Mein: One of the most amusing things in Nevada City – I was born and was going to school there - was that my mother made overcoats for us, and because they were different from other boys’ overcoats, we’d hide them under a bridge and pick them up on the way home. I left Nevada City with my parents when I was about eleven years old, and moved to Oakland. This was caused by the closing down of the hydraulic mines and my father being send to the El Cayo mine in Venezuela, which was then one of the richest gold mines in the world. Hamilton Smith operated the hydraulic mines in California, and when they were closed down by the Sawyer decision, he was persuaded by the Rothschilds to go to London. There, together, they formed the London Exploration Co.

Purification of Nickel and Cobalt from Heap Leaching Effluents Using Ion Exchange Resins A comparative study among several chelating resins for purification of a heap leaching effluent from a nickel laterite ore has been finished. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate (IDA) and bis-picolylamine (Bis-PA) functional groups, from different suppliers, have been evaluated for their selectivity and loading capacities for nickel and cobalt over impurities. The two evaluated IDA resins, Amberlite IRC 748 and Monoplus TP 207, showed very similar results for both loading capacity and selectivity. Better performance was obtained at 7 BV/h at a pH of 4. Evaluation of Bis-PA resin showed that XUS 43578 has better performance than TP 220, with a 30 per cent higher loading capacity and superior selectivity for nickel over impurities.

PRODUCTION in the United States of carbon black has increased from 20 million pounds per year in 1920 to over 2 billion pounds in 1964 valued at $156 million, mostly for consumption by the rubber-tire industry, which uses over 90 percent of total production. Production of over 2 billion pounds in 1964 is a 7.8-percent increase over 1963 and is the first time furnace black production has topped 2 billion pounds. Although 1964 channel black production dropped 6 percent below 1963, carbon black produced by the furnace process, which ac-counted for 92 percent of total production, increased 9 percent to 2,053 million pounds. Total shipments during 1964 amounted to 2,245 mil-lion pounds, a 7 percent increase. This growth parallels the expansion of the automotive and petroleum industries. Along with this expansion have been many advances, both in methods of manufacture and in the quality and variety of blacks available to industry. There are several kinds of carbon black, thermal, channel, furnace, lamp, and oil blacks. Until recently, channel has been the important black in rubber compounding. Following the introduction of the synthetic GR-S, and more recently of "cold rubber," it has been found that certain furnace blacks with particle size larger than that of the standard channel black give superior reinforcement. A great advantage of furnace black is that its yield per unit of gas feedstock is higher than that of channel black. The 184-million-pound increase in domestic carbon black sales was partially offset by a 37-million-pound decrease in exports. Decrease in exports especially to Europe, is expected to continue. In Europe, as in the United States, the major end use for carbon black is in the manufacture of automobile and truck tires. Although the number of automobiles in Europe is predicted to grow by about 7.5 percent per year, compounded until 1975, the increased demand will be met by a 20 percent increase in existing capacity and by the new plants being built in Europe by U.S. companies. Also) aromatic oils for producing furnace blacks are plentiful now that western Europe's chemical industry is switching to a petroleum base.

Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining Industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of ?Google maps?? underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum?s new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys near the eutectic composition has been studied at high growth rates. Lamellar structures were found over a substantial range of tin-rich compositions, and this range extended to increasingly tin-rich concentrations as growth rate increased. These results are discussed in terms of stability and competitive-growth arguments. Various experimental and structural limitations to the rate of directional solidification are discussed. The rate of heat removal at the heat sink is the major experimental limitation. ReCENT interet1,2 in the use of fine composite structures produced by directional solidification of eutectic alloys makes it important to determine the range of composition and growth conditions that yield such microstructures. Because increasing growth velocities produce increasingly finer microstructures, it is particularly significant to determine the factors limiting the rate of solidification. Mollard and Flemings3 have shown that composite structures, free of primary dendrites, can be obtained in Sn-Pb alloys of off-eutectic composition. The composition range of composite structures was found to increase with increasing values of G/V, where G is the temperature gradient and V is the growth velocity. These results are in good quantitative agreement with an analysis of the stability of a planar eutectic interface.4 This analysis specifically predicts that over a small range of compositions stable lamellar structures will be obtained even for G/V = 0, hence, even at very high growth rates. The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys has also been analyzed with a model based on competitive growth between dendrites and the composite structure.576 This treatment, based on earlier work on organic eutetics,7 predicts that the composition range yielding composite structures in Sn-Pb will increase rapidly at high growth rates. An increase in the composition range of composite structures at high growth rates was recently observed in Cu-Pb alloys near the monotectic composition.8 In view of these results, and the predictions of the stability and competitivegrowth analyses, it was decided to study the lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys at high growth rates. EXPERIMENTAL Using 99.999 pct pure materials, a series of Sn-Pb alloys were prepared containing 16.8 at. pct to 27.6 at. pct lead. (Eutectic composition is 26.1 at. pct Pb.) Ingots were extruded to 0.175 in. rod, and some rod was drawn to 0.070-in. wire. Directional solidification was accomplished in two different ways, Fig. 1. For growth rates up to 2 x 10-1 cm per sec, a 0.175 in. diam sample was placed in a graphite crucible 5 in. long with 0.250 in. OD and 0.035 in. walls. Samples were melted under flowing argon in a vertical, platinum-wound furnace, and solidified by driving the crucible downwards through a \ in. hole in a water-cooled copper toroid, Fig. l(a). An insulated chromel-alumel thermocouple was imbedded in the center of a representative sample, and moved with the sample during solidification. The local temperature is plotted against the distance travelled by the sample in Fig. 2. As the growth rate increased, the solid-liquid interface moved closer to the water-cooled toroid and the temperature gradient increased. At growth rates above 10-1' cm per sec, heat was not removed fast enough and the sample moved into the toroid in the liquid state. The curve for V = 2 x 10-1 cm per sec shows a plateau caused by incomplete removal of latent heat from the interface, a problem which will be discussed later. To improve the heat removal, the toroid was cooled by nitrogen gas precooled in liquid nitrogen. This allowed successful solidification at rates up to 2 x 10-1cm per sec. Higher solidification rates required still more effective heat removal. Samples 0.070 in. in diam were placed in graphite tubes 0.125 in. in diam with 0.020 in. walls. Instead of cooling by sliding contact with a cooled toroid, these thinner samples were sprayed or directly immersed into water, Fig. l(b). After solidification, samples were stored in liquid nitrogen until they could be examined metallographic-ally. The surface was prepared with a diamond-knife microtome, followed by a light etch. The presence or absence of tin dendrites, Fig. 3, or lead dendrites, Fig. 4, was noted by optical microscopy, usually of a transverse section near the center of the sample. Replicas of the surface were prepared and examined in an electron microscope to resolve the fine lamellar structures, Fig. 5. The structures observed at various compositions and growth rates are summarized in Fig. 6. Composite structures were observed at increasingly cin-rich compositions as growth rate increased. This transition from dendritic to composite structure with increasing growth rate was also demonstrated by solidifying half a sample at a slow rate and then suddenly increasing the growth rate by lifting the furnace and quenching the sample with a water spray. A longitudinal section of this sample, Fig. 7, shows that the tin dendrites, which extended ahead of the slow-moving composite interface, were bypassed by the composite when the growth rate was increased. The range of composite structures at high growth rates was limited by the appearance of primary lead dendrites on the tin-rich side of the eutectic composition. "The property of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is in McGarry township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, about 25 miles east of Kirkland Lake. It consists of a group of fifteen claims that extend northeast from the KerrAddison mine for a distance of 2 miles.In June, 1906, two groups of prospectors left the town of Chesterville, Ontario, to prospect in northern Ontario. Silver had been discovered 3 years before at Cobalt and the large profits of this young mining camp were the principal incentive to extending the field of exploration northward. One group consisted of Dr. Reddick, Edward Flynn, John Hummel, William Knott, and Colin Cameron. The other group comprised J. T. Kearns, Herman Hummel, W. G. Barkley, and J. Elliott.The two groups travelled north by train to Haileybury and thence to Larder lake by canoe. Camps were pitched on the northeast arm of the lake, and within a short time a discovery was made by Edward Flynn of the first party, who found gold on the property now owned by Kerr-Addison Gold Mines, Limited. Herman Hummel and J. T. Kearns shortly afterwards made the second discovery, on what is now the Chesterville property. These discoveries, made some years prior to those at Porcupine and Kirkland Lake, are believed to be the first in that part of northern Ontario.The Hummel-Kearns claims were incorporated in the following year under the name of Chesterville Larder Lake Gold Mining Company, Limited. It was not, however, until 30 years later, in 1936, following the increased premium on gold, that sufficient capital was placed in the treasury of the Company to carry out an extensive diamond drilling programme. This exploratory drilling was started early in 1937 under the direction of Leo. J. Kearns, and a large body of ore was intersected in the first drill hole. Underground work was started in 1938, a mill was built, and the first gold brick was poured on July 29th, 1939."

O the American coal man, Australian coal mining most appear to have little, if any, influence on American coal-mining practice and to bear little relation to it. Actually, the relationship has been close, for Australian operators have carefully studied American practice by reading American technical publications, by consulting American engineers, and by visits to Ameriean operations. They have leaned heavily on America for their supply of mechanization equipment and many American mining-machinery manufacturers are active in that country, supplying its needs and furnishing technical assistance. Australia's influence on American coal mining has been obscure and probably negligible. However, it seems reasonable to assume that this influence will increase. The wartime development of air transportation will inevitably bring these two countries into much more intimate contact than existed in recent years. American servicemen. many of them former miners and coal-mining technicians, have visited Australian operation, while stationed in that country, have talked with operators and men over there, and undoubt-

A self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed to provide complete respiratory protection for a miner in an irrespirable atmosphere. The apparatus has the desired features of comfort, reliability, maintainability, and quick-donning capability. The apparatus is packaged in a moistureproof envelope and is protected in a shock absorbing, fiberglass resin carrying case. The apparatus is a small, lightweight, one-time-use device that can be readily worn on a miner's belt, requires no maintenance and is designed to have a shelf life of five years and a carrying life of three years. It is deployed to the use position in a period of 15 to 30 seconds. Man tests conducted in-house and at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) testing laboratories established that this unit meets all performance requirements listed in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 11, Subchapter B, Subpart H (CFR 30, Part 11) for respiratory protective devices. The unit, which has received joint approval (TC-13F-37) on a prototype basis from the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) and NIOSH has: (1) Ten-minute service life under escape conditions. (2) Thirty-minute service life when the wearer is at rest. (3) Peak-to-peak breathing resistance of less than our inches water column height. (4) Inspired gas temperature of less than 135°F. (5) Breathing gas contents greater than 19.5 volume per cent of oxygen and less than 2.5 per cent carbon dioxin. (6) A weight (complete in carrying case) of 2.75 lbs. (7) A carrying case size of 6-1/2"x 5-1/8"x 3-1/8".

Two house trailers and a modem modular house, all pillar-supported with cantilevered perimeters, were monitored for structural response to vibrations from surface coal mine blasts. Due to the large blast site distances, peak particle velocities measured in the ground beside the houses did not exceed 0.32 ips, and airblasts did not exceed 106 dB. However, the structures responded significantly to the ground vibrations, with maximum high-comer amplification factors as high as 8.5 in the horizontal directions. Vertical structural responses were as high as 10 times the vertical peak particle velocities in the ground, but appeared to be driven more by horizontal ground motions. No measurable airblast responses were observed. The natural frequencies of the structures ranged from 5 to 10 Hz.

Gold-silver mineralised veins at Favona, represent a new low-sulfidation epithermal vein discovery that occurs less than 1 km southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The Favona vein is hosted in Late Miocene andesitic lava flows and local dacitic tuffs that are intensely altered to quartz, adularia, chlorite, illite or interstratified illite-smectite (with ten to 70 per cent smectite) and pyrite. Adularia is widespread and envelops the veins, whereas chlorite and illite are mostly restricted to the footwall, and illite-smectite is confined to the hanging wall of the Favona vein. At shallow levels, kaolinite, cristobalite and rare alunite overprint the above minerals. A polymict hydrothermal breccia also occurs above and in the hanging wall of the Favona vein and contains clasts of altered andesite and various quartz vein fragments. Fluid inclusions in quartz veins sampled over a 300 m vertical interval have a homogenisation temperature range of 175¦ to 266¦C and dilute apparent salinities of 220¦C and grading into illite-smectite and local smectite which formed at 2. In contrast, late kaolinite, cristobalite and alunite formed from descending steam-heated acid-sulfate waters. Overall, the Favona and Waihi deposits are interpreted to have formed at similar levels in a single low relief hydrothermal system, with each deposit representing a distinct zone of fluid upflow.
