WILLIAM CHURCH was one of the founders and the first president of the Detroit Copper Mining Co. and was the first man to interest the Phelps Dodge company in the possibilities of the Morenci district, in the '70's. One rather interesting story concerning him is told by James Colquhoun, at one time president of the Arizona Copper Co., in his "History of the Clifton-Morenci Mining District." It seems that a geologist visited the Detroit company's mines and gave Alec McLean, then mine superintendent, quite a lesson on the proper mineralogical terms for what he saw in passing. Later, McLean handed out a few of them to Mr. Church as they walked through the mine on a tour of inspection. The latter had even less regard for a geologist than he did for sulphide ore, which meant little indeed, for in those days the rich ore was all oxidized, and there was no money in the sulphides. So Church was completely unimpressed by the geological and mineralogical terms that McLean had acquired from the visiting geologist. Church turned on him and warned him that so long as he was a member of his staff he was to understand that there were only two kinds of rock in his mines-the one was smelting ore and the other was waste rock, and he was not to forget it.

Uranium bearing copper sulphide flotation concentrates produced from iron oxide copper gold uranium (IOCG–U) ore contains radionuclides such as 238U, 230Th, 210Pb, 226Ra, 210Po, which have the potential to reduce their marketability, thus posing a challenge to the industry. Thus, a two–stage leach process has been proposed in this study. In first stage, a sulphuric acid leach process effectively dissolve most of the 238U and 230Th into solution, but other radionulclides (mainly 210Pb, 226Ra and 210Po) remain associated with copper sulphide minerals owing to their low solubilities in sulphuric acid solution. In the second leaching stage, the use of methanesulfonic acid (MSA, CH3SO3H) is investigated to selectively dissolve the 210Pb, 226Ra and 210Po from the residue of the first stage. The results indicate that 96% of 238U, 87% of 230Th, 90% of 210Pb, 86% of 226Ra and 17% of 210Po are dissolved using 3 mol/L MSA solution at 90°C for 3 hours, which represents a dramatic decrease in the radioactivity of the copper concentrate. INTRODUCTION Australia is host to one of the largest iron oxide copper–gold–uranium (IOCG–U) deposits in the world. Most of the value in these deposits is associated with copper. In mineral processing, the gangue minerals are separated from copper sulphide minerals that report to a copper flotation concentrate. However, due to the strong association of uranium with copper minerals and hematite, even clean copper concentrates can contain significant amounts of uranium (238U) and its radioactive decay elements, of which thorium (230Th), radium (226Ra), lead (210Pb), and polonium (210Po) are the long life radionuclides. These hazardous radionuclides negatively affect the marketability of the copper concentrates. Customer copper smelters in China, Japan and Europe may consider the radionuclides penalty elements or may not be able to process the feed. Therefore, there is a strong motivation to remove radionuclides from copper concentrates at the mine site before shipping to custom smelters in global market. Hydrometallurgical leaching has been widely employed to remove radionuclides from different kinds of minerals such as copper concentrates (Ragozzini & Sparrow, 1987), zircon concentrates (Aral, Sparrow, McDonald, & Norgate, 2007), and coal ash (Lei, Qi, Sun, Xu, & Wang, 2014). Leaching using sulphuric acid (H2SO4) solutions is the most widely used process for the extraction of uranium from uranium ores due to the relatively low cost and wide availability of the acid (Bhargava et al., 2015; Gilligan & Nikoloski, 2015). The leach process involves treating ground ore slurry with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures (typically 60–90 °C) under oxidising conditions in order to convert the uranium in the minerals 2+ from the relatively insoluble tetravalent form (UO2) into water–soluble hexavalent state (UO2), which then complexes with SO42- and forms UO2(SO4)22- in solution. The uranium oxidation is generally carried out in the presence of ferric ion (Fe3+), regardless of the reagent and oxidant used. The most commonly used oxidants for uranium include sodium chlorate, pyrolusite and oxygen (Ring, 1980). These oxidants act indirectly by converting ferrous sulphate, formed by the oxidation reaction of UO2 in slurries, into ferric sulphate. The presence of Fe–containing gangue minerals such as hematite in the ore usually provides sufficient Fe required for the oxidation of UO2. After sulphuric acid leaching, the locked thorium (230Th), radium (226Ra), lead (210Pb), and polonium (210Po) elements are chemically liberated from hematite and uranium mineral grains (Ciobanu, Wade, Cook, Schmidt Mumm, & Giles, 2013). However, the extraction rate of radium (226Ra), lead (210Pb), and polonium (210Po) in sulphate solution is very low due to the limited solubilities of (Ra, Pb, Po)SO4 (Bagnall & Freeman, 1956; Liu & Papangelakis, 2006; Nikitin & Tolmachev, 1933).

Entrapments are a huge risk in underground mines. This happens when miners (or any other persons who have entered underground) survive the initial event of an accident, become trapped or lost in unknown and life-threatening locations after evacuation, and remain unaccounted for. At this point, every second counts, and emergency response is highly desired for any chances of saving survivors. The survival chances of the missing persons depend on how quickly they can be located. Rescue teams are often deployed to search for the missing persons underground. However, the rescue teams are forced to search in random and presumed areas of the mine. This is due to the unavailability of information pertaining to the whereabouts of the missing persons. Not only the provision of accurate locations, but various other types of information such as post-accident two-way communication can enhance the survival chances of the missing persons. This information can be provided by a fit-for-purpose missing person locator system. A wide variety of missing person locator systems are already commercially available, some are in testing phases and others in prototype and development phases. This includes tracking, tracing, location detectors and post-accident two-way communication systems. These systems have unique functionalities, capabilities and limitations; making it difficult for mines to select the most effective, applicable and suitable system specific to their mine. In this study, the user requirements for a fit-for-purpose missing person locator system were developed. The purpose of the user requirements was to provide a guideline to facilitate the system selection process. The user requirements can also be used as a tool to measure and evaluate the performance of the selected missing person locator system. The user requirements were also used to predict the success of the selected system under different missing person incident scenarios. The development of the user requirements showed a potential for many other benefits for missing person locator systems.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. The inclination of any pit wall composed of stacks of benches is limited by the overall quality and structural complexity of the rock mass in which the slope is situated. For a bench stack angle that satisfies the stability criteria, various combinations of bench height, bench face angle and berm width can be used in the slope design. The bench face angle and berm width geometries must be chosen to fit the bench stack angle but must provide a berm that will be capable of catching the volume of failed wedge material from the bench faces above. Other considerations for bench height and berm width are equipment size, ore selectivity and blasting design. This paper studies the effects of different slope configurations on slope performance as it relates to wedge stability, volume of rock safely contained on berms, and rockfall. Optimisation of the geometry is carried out based on the need to minimise the volume of failed material which limits the effectiveness of the berm. This will reduce the number of rocks that can continue to fall further, reaching geotechnical safety berms or pit ramps, that put safety of personnel and equipment at risk. For general study it is most effective to investigate and compare the performances of each of a wide range of geometrical combinations of bench height, bench face angles and berm widths that fit a variety of different bench stack angles. These analyses were conducted for a predetermined bench stack height and three different bench stack angles.

In recent years, tunnelling activities in Singapore have increased considerably with the construction of extensions to the existing sub-surface transport system, a deep tunnel sewerage disposal system, and tunnels for the laying power cables and other utilities. These tunnels are excavated through urban areas, adjacent to high-rise buildings, depressed road structures, beneath other tunnels, and buried services. Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) have been used extensively in Singapore with great success. The risk associated with soft ground tunnelling, including tunnelling through Old Alluvium, can be minimized with an understanding of the geology, geotechnical parameters, and the tunnelling-induced behaviour of Old Alluvium (OA The purpose of this paper is to present some design and construction aspects of EPB TBM tunnelling through Old Alluvium.

The area of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of India is about 2.014 million km2 and the resource evaluation of placer deposits is one of the objectives of Government of India. Placers are detrital metallic minerals found on beaches and in the near shore areas. Quantitatively more important are placer deposits of light heavy minerals such as zircon, ilmenite and rutile. Rivers and other drainage channels are the main carriers of the placers which contain heavy minerals like magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, zircon, monazite, rutile etc. The present beach as well as part of the shelf was land during Pleistocene as a result of the world wide lowering of the sea levels. The coast line shifted a number of times. Hence, the heavy mineral placers on the beaches are expected to extend to offshore areas chiefly with Pleistocene lowered sea level strands. India has extensive deposits of heavy mineral placers along the beaches. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the east and west coasts. Along the central west coast of India (12??N - 19? N lat.) the placer containing 14 - 17% ilmenite form an estimated reserve of 4 million tons. On the Ratnagiri coast of Maharashtra, the proportion of heavy mineral varies between 54 and 70% in the bulk samples, consisting mainly of 14 - 39% magnetite and 16 - 30% ilmenite. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the central west coast consist largely of silty sand, sand silt and clay. The core samples show that a reddish brown clay overlay olive gray clay which in turn overlay heavy mineral rich sands. The heavy mineral concentration ranges upto 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. Siddiquie et al. reported 42 - 75% TiO2 in the ilmenite.

"Since 1975, the Aluminium Pechiney Research Centre at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (LRF) has been concentrating its efforts on designing, testing and perfecting the Aluminium Pechiney point-fed prebaked reduction cell.In 1979, the AP18 cell (180 kA) was industrially launched with the construction and start-up of the F line in Saint-Jean. The following generation, the AP30 (300 kA), with prototypes started in 1981, was launched in 1986 on the Saint-Jean G line. Along with cell design, efficient process control systems were developed to pilot alumina feeding and bath composition. Together, these pots are currently producing 4.6 Mt of aluminum, i.e., 18% of the world’s overall yearly production.In 1989, the research centre faced a new challenge: to push the limits for the size of a reduction cell to further improve the profitability of Greenfield projects. This new generation development was also the opportunity for a significant redesign of the Aluminium Pechiney electrolysis information system.With a track record of ten years of semiindustrial operation with three prototypes, the AP50 technology is now ready for industrial implementation and enables a significant breakthrough to be made in terms of return on investment of a Greenfield smelter."

SOUTH AFRICAN TUNNELLING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN 1970 A South African Tunnelling Conference, to be known as TUNCON 70, is to be held in Johannesburg during the latter half of July, 1970. South Africa, in common with other countries, has a vital and growing interest in tunnelling. Apart from the 800 kilometres of tunnel excavated annually in the gold mines, the 82 kilometre-long Orange-Fish Tunnel is being driven to carry water from the Orange River to the drier areas of the Eastern Cape Province. This and the realization that services such as water and transport are increasingly being carried underground in various parts of the world have emphasized the need for a forum at which the technology and potential of tunnelling can be discussed. TUNCON 70 is being supported by three professional engineering societies representing some 6,000 engineers, namely, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as by the Geological Society of South Africa. The conference has three main purposes. Firstly, to pool and exchange expertise by authorities on tunnelling; secondly, to discuss future developments in tunnelling technology with the aim of making those concerned with long-term planning aware of the potentialities of tunnelling; thirdly, to propose standards for tunnel shapes and sizes. Adoption of standards for tunnelling equipment and accessories would be a major step forward in improving tunnelling efficiency. The five themes of the conference will be: tunnel utilisation, exploration, design, construction and standards. The conference will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 21st to 24th July, 1970. This paper will be of interest to those who are actually developing a mineral prospect or planning to do so, as well as to investors who are considering the problem of financing the development of the prospect, so that they may know what the risks are and what capital expenditures are necessary before a prospect may become a mine. The term "prospect" used broadly, as it is in this paper, is defined as any property that has a mineral showing of sufficient interest to warrant development, irrespective of prior work, Such previous exploration, however, may be extensive and consist of several tunnels or adits connected by raises, or of shafts with several levels. There may also be a small mining and milling plant on the prospect which, because of the lack of capital for development or the lack of markets for the products, is now idle. Such prospects may warrant further capital investment for development work or for a mine plant to raise to the stage of profitable production.

According to the practice of mining management in the system of industrial complexes, the Kazakhstan gold mines are part of the mine processing industrial concerns providing ore-mining and ore-dressing. The cycle technology of winning operations used at the mining of vein deposits in the mines of the industrial concern is mainly provided by the systems of scrapping, scipping and electric locomotion. At present the information and computer system, elaborated on the basis of the Maikain underground mine is intended for creation of the system of automatic operation for the industrial complex mines. The information and computer system includes: - parametres characterising the accepted technology of works; - the main parametres characterising the technical devices of operation and control ; - information about the material, technical and personnel resources available at the mine; - mining and geological conditions of the deposit; - the facilities of the subsidiary units, of the mine; - the direct parametres and technico-economical indices in which the mine efficacy and activity is estimated. The suggested structure of the automatic operation system can be sensibly realized with the application of the microprocessor on the first level, the personal computer IBM PC/XT or PC/AT on the second level. For the complete realization of the project each mine will need 4-5 computers (as PC/XT), one IBM PC/AT and each mine complex - one super IBM for creation of the distributed information bank and its including in the integral world communication system.

Fe-Ni alloys can be used as raw material in making stainless steel. Laterite nickel ore is one of mineral resources for producing nickel alloys. In this work, the laterite ore after dehydration at 800 °C and the anthracite as reducing agent were mixed for pre-reduction at 900 °C, and then reduced to form Fe-Ni alloys at 1550-1620 °C through carbon-thermal reduction process. A high Ni-content alloy component in the metallurgical mixture can be formed through pre-reduction. Better separation of the resulting metals from the slag is found with lower Ni-content alloys produced or higher temperatures during reduction. An effective processing of Fe-Ni alloys needs further understanding of the process fundamentals and optimizing of the process parameters.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

Nowadays, the demand for a finer grind in minerals processing has set new challenges within the industry, particularly for grinding technology. Apart from a finer grind, energy efficiency is also a key driver in optimising comminution technology.Stirred milling technology, already proven in many other industries, delivers a modern, sophisticated, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding in minerals processing. Fine grinding technology is utilised particularly in concentrate regrinding to complete the liberation of valuable minerals after the first stage of concentration. Maintaining the correct particle and particle size distribution of the regrind product is crucial for downstream process performance. Stirred milling technology offers the unique possibility for online control and optimisation of the regrind product particle size. This paper describes the basis of this online control possibility and discusses the implementation of stirred milling technology in minerals processing, particularly in regrinding applications. The optimal maintenance and control of the air flow and pressure distribution in a mine network are achieved by the correct positioning of the mine fans and regulators within the mine ventilation circuit. The principal considerations are the location of the main and underground fans or regulators and the attendant control of mine leakage. Air flow control is achieved by either passive or active regulation. Passive regulation adds resistance, usually in the form of a regulating door. Active regulation adds pressure sources in the form of underground booster fans. Ventilation engineers are increasingly turning to analytical tools to assist them in the design and operation of ventilation systems. An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.

Granular piles are one of the leading ground improvement techniques, adopted for the betterment of bearing capacity and reduction in settlements of the foundations and also to accelerate consolidation of the surrounding soil. In the recent past, there has been extensive research on the settlement analysis and behavior of granular piles under varied soil conditions. The application of these theoretical solutions to practical problems requires a knowledge of representative values of the deformation parameters of the ground and the granular piles. However, very little information is available on these parameters. The paper presents a new method for the estimation of the modular ratio of granular piles and modulus of deformation of the surrounding in-situ soil from the compression load tests. The load - settlement response obtained from the compression test results are used in the back analysis for estimating the modulus of deformation of the ground. The presence of granular bed, under the rigid plate for load testing, has been given due consideration in quantifying the proportion of load transferred on to the stone column. Based on these considerations a new method is developed to estimate the modulus of deformation of the ground and the modular ratio of the granular pile.

The correlations between the modulus ratio and penetration rate of rotary and percussive drills were statistically investigated using the raw data obtained from the experimental works of different researchers. An inverse power law was found between the modulus ratio and the penetration rate of rotary and diamond drills. The penetration rate of rotary drills and diamond drills decrease with an increasing modulus ratio. The penetration rates of percussive drills increase with an increasing modulus ratio. There are significant linear correlations between the penetration rates of percussive drills and the modulus ratio. In one of the cases of percussive drilling, a strong correlation between the penetration rate and the modulus ratio was found for the rocks having a porosity value lower 1.23 %. It can be concluded that the modulus ratio might be a representative measure of rock drilling efficiency. However, further study is necessary to check the validity of the derived equations for other rock types. The effect of porosity on the correlations between the modulus ratio and penetration rate needs to be further investigated.
