Uplift of the antiformal ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand , has resulted in the progressive evolution of eluvial placer deposits in tectonic sediments on the range flanks and along their margins. The placers are derived from the reworking of fine-grained gold from the auriferous Manuherikia Group fluvial sediments which covered the basement prior to uplift of the ranges. Gold in the tectonic sediments at Matakanui shows a progressive increase in grainsize in successively younger sediments and nuggets in the youngest gravel sequence are up to two orders of magnitude larger than gold grains in the parent alluvial source. Most of the gold in the tectonic sediments is highly irregular in shape, commonly with delicate surface textures which could not have survived fluvial transport and are indicative of authigenic precipitation. Some coarse grains have been rounded by recycling, and further addition of authigenic gold has occurred. Placer gold values result from both physical and chemical enrichment during sedimentary recycling. Continued range uplift and back-thrusting of sediments on to the ranges results in recycling of earlier formed placer sediments. They also result in further enrichment of gold values through the incorporation of additional supplies of the parent alluvial source sediment The host sediments are widespread along the ranges and are not confined to sites of historic mining activity.

Microtunneling provides a necessary solution for multiple utility crossings associated with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company?s (MTACC) Eastside Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road. Construction of four TBM tunnels and their approach structures at the eastern end of the project in Sunnyside, Queens required significant modification and expansion of the railroad infrastructure at this location. Maintenance of railroad traffic during project construction is a principal requirement. As a consequence fourteen (14) utility crossing segments are being installed under active traffic by microtunneling methods. Microtunnels were installed in a variety of conditions including depths, types of soils and construction restraints.

The surface manifestation of underground mining usually entails five distinct types of surface movements, which can affect or damage surface structures, facilities and renewable resources. These movements developing at the surface can be described by (Bell, 1975; Bhattacharya and Singh, 1984): - vertical displacement, i.e. subsidence, - horizontal displacements, - slope or tilt, i.e. the derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, - curvature, i.e. the second derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, and, - horizontal strain, i.e. the derivative of the horizontal displacement with respect to the horizontal distance.

This paper describes recent ground control challenges encountered at the longwall recovery areas of one of Bailey Mine?s two longwall faces and the proactive measures taken by CONSOL management and engineering to mitigate them. The challenges derived primarily from the following causes: (1) irregular roof coal and draw slate thickness, (2) presence of thick sandstone at the recovery area and extremely weak rocks below the sandstone, (3) close proximity to a regional anticline, (4) low shield set pressure and tip load, and (5) ineffective primary roof support that led to progressive failure of the headgate roof. The presence of the anticline contributed to extensive fracturing of the sandstone. Excessive pot-out in advance of the shields frequently occurred near mid-face due to the presence of thick draw slate and irregular roof coal near the recovery area. This, in turn, resulted in face heights that exceeded the maximum reach of the shields. Subsequently, during longwall meshing, when the advance rate slowed considerably, fractured sandstone would often break loose, causing the shields to yield, thereby reducing the height and inhibiting shearer movement. To improve the headgate and face conditions within the longwall recovery area, several actions were taken, including: (1) assessing site-specific roof geology by conducting in-mine roof coring around the recovery areas and by mapping immediate draw slate and roof coal thicknesses within surrounding entries, (2) increasing pump pressure and thus shield set pressures (3) diligently monitoring shield set pressures and longwall extraction horizon, (4) installing additional cable bolts and roof screening to prevent progressive failure of the immediate headgate roof, (5) fully-grouting supplemental cable bolts to improve headgate support stiffness, and (6) gluing the headgate roof within the recovery areas with polyurethane. As a result of these collective efforts, longwall recovery delays at Bailey Mine were reduced from 21 days in 2006 to nearly zero in 2009.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. Previous legislation did not cover all work places, many areas were excluded from coverage, and there were at least 14 different acts and dozens of sets of regulations dealing with various aspects of health and safety.

The objective of this research was to examine variations in melting and forging practice for four titanium-base alloys and to determine their effect on the resultant product. Of particular interest was the evaluation of the skull-casting technique. The data should serve as a guide to producers and consumers of titanium products. Physical properties of four titanium-base alloys in ingot form and in sheet form were evaluated and correlated, where possible, with variations in the melting and casting procedure. Consumable-electrode melting was used throughout, but arc current and furnace backfill pressure were varied, and ingots were formed both by melting directly into a water-cooled copper mold and by skull melting followed by pouring into a graphite mold. Alloying metal additions for the alloys tested were (1) 8 percent manganese, (2) 6 percent aluminum and 4 percent vanadium, (3) 6 percent molybdenum and 2 percent aluminum, and (4) 16 percent vanadium and 2.8 percent aluminum.

Over the last 10 years the diameter of unbraced, unlined and unanchored circular shafts has grown dramatically in many parts of the world. This progress has taken place through improvements in: construction methods; concrete rheology; and design capabilities. Excavation equipment has become more precise in terms of operator control and ability to correct alignment of digging elements leading to better alignment tolerances. Also contributing to the increases in shaft diameters is the evolution of design models. A better understanding of soil structure interaction is being incorporated into the analyses in terms of radial soil stresses and imposed loads on the shaft. This paper provides an overview of the recent progress made in circular shaft construction, the primary design considerations, and some innovative uses of efficient arc elements to develop unsupported structures of other shapes. In addition, a summary of recent circular shafts constructed worldwide is provided.

Nationalization is high on the policy agenda in South Africa. This paper considers the case for nationalizing the local mining sector from an evidence-based perspective, which is derived from theoretical considerations and related to the known features of the South African mining sector and economy. A strong case against nationalization emerges, which can be summarized as follows. The mining sector is competitive and therefore a poor candidate for public ownership. Furthermore, the resources sector does not dominate the South African economy nor does it create the risk of a decrease in the competitiveness of the industrial sector via the unintended adverse impact of an appreciating real exchange rate due to a commodity boom (Dutch Disease). Nationalizing the mining sector will cost the government more than it receives. This is not only a bad idea in itself, but it will limit the scope for distributive policies on the national budget. The contemporary international experience demonstrates the risks of fiscal imprudence. Finally, nationalizing the resources sector will undermine support for those very market-based institutions required to achieve a higher long-run growth trajectory.

Frithia humilis is an endangered succulent plant species. Its distribution range overlaps with the coal fields of Mpumalanga and it is therefore threatened by opencast mining activities in particular. One of the 11 known populations of F. humilis was translocated from a licensed coal mining site to three suitable receptor sites within the species? distribution range. A longterm monitoring programme was initiated to track the progress of the newly established populations. Temporal trends in population demography, size classes, and fecundity were recorded. Population numbers of size classes fluctuated annually. However, flower frequency increased over time and seedling recruitment contributed significantly to population growth. Receptor sites with similar geological conditions to the donor site had more persistent cohorts, which suggest that such sites should receive priority during the translocation of endangered edaphic specialists. This study not only confirms that a Frithia humilis population can successfully establish after a translocation, but also serves as an important baseline for future comparative purposes to gauge the long-term success of the translocation effort.

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

Small-scale continuous flotation tests are described in which the influence of 1) pulp density and 2) feed rate on the rate of flotation are investigated. The results provide further evidence of first-order kinetics for flotation and indicate that tests at different feed rates provide a particularly simple method of determining rate constants. Flotation kinetics are discussed in general terms. Over a period of many years numerous research workers have studied the rate of recovery of valuable materials from flotation pulps with a view to deter-mining the mechanism of the froth flotation process. Froth flo ation is fundamentally a collision process involviug at some stage collision and then mutual attachment between air bubbles and mineral particles. It is possible to draw analogies therefore between the flotation process involving mainly macroscopic particles and the ordinary processes of chemical reaction kinetics involving collisions between atoms, molecules and ions. By adopting this analogy we may postulate a general equation representing the kinetics of the flotation process: -dC/dt =K.CC ,Aa (1) The rate constant, K, will be a complex function involving reagent concentrations, particle and bubble sizes, induction times and no doubt flotation cell design. However, these are factors which can be kept constant in any series of experiments, permitting investigation of the exponents a and c, which determine the order of the reaction occurring in flotation. The various research investigations carried out so far have all aimed at evaluating a and c and in the majority of cases only since the concentration of air has usually been kept constant in a series of tests, so that a relationship of the following type has been investigated: -dC/dt = K1 Cc (2) The techniques of both batch testing and continuous testing have been used to investigate this relationship. IRUP is an iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite rock that formed due to hot ironrich fluids and gases replacing local stratigraphic zones of the Bushveld Complex. This study focuses on the estimation of the probability of IRUP occurrence on the Merensky Reef at the Marikana Karee Mine. A 2.15 million centare IRUP-rich domain at the Karee Mine was initially defined from the interpretation of a surface aeromagnetic anomaly, and exposures in the mine workings. Surface boreholes (spaced 250-500 m apart) within this IRUP domain contain approximately equal numbers of IRUP-replaced and IRUP-free intersections. Owing to the uncertainty in the continuity of the IRUP alteration (a result of the wide borehole spacing), the risk associated with the development of mining infrastructure within this domain is unquantifiable. Semi-quantitative data comprising visual estimates of IRUP replacement from reef development mapping data and surface borehole reef intersections was interpolated into blocks using indicator kriging estimation. Comparative analyses of the estimate of IRUP occurrences were made by changing the block size and declustering the data systematically. Reconciliations of the probability of IRUP predicted from the block models derived from the different data-sets and sequential indicator simulation models were analysed for four mining study blocks. A quantitative approach to modelling the occurrence of IRUP can be an additional tool for refining the estimate of the geological losses that inform the mine plan in such high-risk zones.

The proposed Caldecott fourth bore will consist of a two lane highway tunnel along California State Route 24 near the City of Oakland. The proposed design and construction sequence for the 15-m-diameter tunnel are based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The initial support system incorporates combinations of shotcrete, rock dowels, lattice girders, spiles, and grouted steel pipe canopies. The final lining is cast-in-place reinforced concrete. A waterproofing membrane and drainage system are placed between the initial and final linings. State Route 24 is a lifeline route, required to be open to emergency vehicles within 72 hours after a major earthquake, defined as having a return period of 1,500 years and a peak ground acceleration of 1.2 g. Although the seismic design criteria are stringent, the design of the tunnel lining system is ultimately controlled by static ground loads in the weak rock along the alignment.

The human body is remarkably adaptable and capable of performance in a wide variety of environments and circumstances. It cannot be said, however, that the body is capable of performing equally well under all conditions. In fact, when faced with certain types of tasks or environmental demands, the body may have to adapt using methods that result in substantial performance limitations. Such a phenomenon is evident when workers must adopt unusual or restricted postures during performance of physically demanding work tasks. For the purposes of this discussion, the term "unusual posture" will be considered as any working posture other than typical standing or sitting positions. The term "restricted posture" designates postures that are forced upon workers due to restrictions in workspace. The vast majority of ergonomics research has focused on establishing design criteria for work involving standing (e.g., Snook and Ciriello, 1991; Waters et al., 1993) or seated postures (e.g., Grandjean, 1988), and understandably so. However, it must be recognized that there are numerous jobs (e.g., underground miners, aircraft baggage handlers, plumbers, agricultural workers, mechanics, etc.) where workers must perform in less desirable postures such as kneeling, stooping, squatting, and lying down (Haselgrave et al., 1997). Top-down construction (or cut and cover construction) is providing important advantages when comparing with conventional construction techniques for commercial developments with deep basements, underground car parks or near surface infrastructure and traffic tunnels. Main features are substantially reduced restrictions to surface usage, avoidance of intervention with adjacent property, provision of rigid substructures resulting in minimal deforma­tions and settlements and, last but not least, accelerated construction pro­gramme. The present contribution illustrates the construction method in general and elaborates in detail on the special foundation works for a major urban commercial high rise development requiring a six level basement structure.

For years, the strategy was to contain waste and in many applications, is still the recommended method. Recently, it has become acceptable to create filters below ground for the in-situ treatment of waste. Consequently, in lieu of the waste being contained, it is desirable that the waste flow through a pervious treatment zone. For instance, subterranean pervious walls comprised of iron sand are particularly useful in treating chlorinated solvents in contaminated groundwater. The iron acts as a corrective filter to treat the contaminated groundwater. How are these impervious and pervious walls being constructed? One effective means of constructing an impervious barrier is the vibrated beam method. This method, in brief, involves the use of a fabricated steel beam, a vibrator, a pile driving crane, and a mixing plant. This method results in a 4-6" wide wall with depths up to and exceeding 100'. Over one hundred slurry walls have been installed using this method in the United States. The need for the vibrated beam method continues to escalate due to its reduced health and safety considerations, high level of quality control, lack of excavation, narrow working area, and ability to achieve depths greater than 100'. A recent project was in Marinette, Wisconsin at the ANSUL facility. The project consisted of a 28,000 square foot slurry wall and was completed in January of 1999. Another effective means of creating an impervious barrier, where structural support from the barrier is needed, is the Waterloo® Barrier System. This system involves the use of a pile driving crane, Waterloo® steel sheet piles which are patented steel sheet piles due to their groutable interlocks, and a grout plant. This system results in a water-tight barrier due to the grouted interlocks and provides structural support. A project was completed at Beta Steel in Portage, IN for a retention pond to protect Lake Michigan. Due to the new concept of "filtering", there are few accepted construction techniques available. One effective field proven construction technique is the patent pending mandrel emplacement technique. This technique involves the use of a fabricated hollow steel mandrel with a shoe, a vibrator, a heavy duty crane, and a material feeder. This technique results in a pervious wall which may be comprised of pure iron sand or any other flowable media. Using this technique, the pervious wall may be constructed in varying widths to depths in excess of 100'. A successful installation occurred in October 1997 at Cape Canaveral Air Station in Florida.

Third generation advance high strength steels with microstructures of acicular ferrite and retained austenite were investigated and meet mechanical property goals. A good combination of strength and ductility were achieved with duplex ferrite and austenite microstructures where cementite formation was suppressed. Transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) behavior produced rapid work hardening. The mechanical properties of two hot-rolled steels with duplex microstructures were compared and had the following compositions: (1) Fe-0.14C-13.87Mn-1.42Si-3.51Al; and (2) Fe-0.06C-14.2Mn-1.85Si-2.38Al. These steels were cast, homogenized, and hot rolled at 900ºC to obtain a refined microstructure with ultimate tensile strengths and elongations to failure of 865 MPa and 39% and 1,217 MPa and 28%, respectively. The amount of metastable austenite in both compositions decreased after tensile testing from 58% and 28% to 6% and 0%, respectively. Microstructures were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and x-ray diffraction.
