The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. Most methods for the treatment of scrap printed circuit boards do not reclaim the components in working order as the boards are either fed to a copper smelter, to recover the valuable elements, or, simply landfilled. This work reports the dissolution of the solder in fluoroboric acid containing Ti4+ ions which was particularly selective for solder, allowing the components to be recovered. The solder was subsequently electrowon from the leachant. The boards were then shredded and the copper dissolved in ammonium sulfate and, then treated via solvent extraction to give an electrolyte suitable for electrowinning. The remainder of the metals were dissolved aqua regia, silver remained unattacked by the aqua regia, palladium precipitated as Pd(NH4)Cl6 in the presence of zinc and nickel, the gold was removed by solvent extraction and precipitated as nanoparticles. The aqua regia was then diluted and the zinc and nickel separated by solvent extraction.

To help insure the continued viability of the minerals and materials sector of the U.S. economy, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research and disseminating technology that will result in more efficient minerals extraction. As part of this effort, a process is being investigated that involves an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure to treat complex sulfide concentrates to produce ZnCl2. Subsequent fused-salt electrolysis of the ZnCI2 produces high-purity zinc metal. Previous reports described preliminary, small-scale research on the chlorine-oxygen leaching system and fused-salt electrolysis of ZnCl2. This report discusses the details of design, construction, and longterm, continuous operation of both monopolar and bipolar fused-salt cells. The effects of temperature, electrode gap, current density, electrolyte composition, and electrode configuration on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined for a ZnCl2-KC1-NaCl electrolyte system. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of about 50 lb/day in a monopolar cell which was operated continuously for 60 days with current efficiencies from 85.8 to 98.6 pct and an average power consumption of 2.1 kwhr/lb. Bipolar cells with several different electrode configurations were operated for 90 days. A current efficiency of about 70 pct and power consumption of about 1.7 kwhr/lb of zinc were achieved using a three-electrode-pair, bipolar assembly with a chlorine gas lift pump to circulate electrolyte.

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Surface drainage samples, the usual media employed in mapping national territories, cannot be used for the geochemical mapping of carbonate terrains because there is no regular surface-drainage pattern on karst. Suitable sampling media have been studied in Yugoslavia, one-third of which consists of karst terrain. Sampling designs for the work were based on analysis of variance techniques. During initial investigations of various sampling materials in NW Yugoslavia sediment and aquatic moss from karst springs, along with soil, were established as the most appropriate media. Modified sampling procedures were then carefully applied along the entire Yugoslav karst belt, which includes terrains of contrasting topography, climate, pedology and vegetation. The studies indicate that climate and relief do not systematically influence the geochemical composition of soil. Regional and local variability was assessed for 21 chemical elements and the feasibility of producing stable regional geochemical maps was determined for a number of elements on the basis of sampling aquatic moss and sediment from karst springs and soil

Compressed air energy storage (CAES) uses low cost off-peak energy to compress air and pump it into pressurised underground storage. Expanding the air through a modified form of gas turbine generates electrical energy when required. While generating power, a CAES station consumes approximately one-third of the gas required for the equivalent installed capacity of a conventional gas turbine. Air can be stored in underground rock caverns, caverns in salt domes, or in aquifers. Existing CAES power stations use caverns mined out of salt domes. Aquifer storage for CAES has been proposed, but not yet implemented. The groundwater in the aquifer would be displaced during air injection and when required the air would be extracted using the natural hydro-static pressure. Victoria has no salt domes, but has aquifers onshore in the Gippsland Basin with geological dome structures of suitable depth, discovery pressure, porosity, permeability and caprock for CAES development. Field tests costing several million dollars would be required to prove the suitability. The most suitable aquifer is near Seaspray, where several dome structures exist. The aquifer, comprising of coarse sands capped by coal and mudstone, is some 600 metres deep with a hydrostatic pressure of 6.3 MPa. Computer simulation of injection and extraction of air from the aquifer under various combinations of horizontal and vertical wells, permeability and tubing head pressures indicated the largest aquifer structure had the capacity to sustain a 300 MW station. A well field comprising of 24 directionally driven wells with a horizontal exposure to the aquifer would achieve the air flow rates required. Using plant similar to that recently installed at McIntosh Alabama USA, would mean high capital costs compared to standard gas turbine plant. However, a review of modem gas turbines indicated that they could be easily and economically adaptated to CAES duty. Adapting a 120 MW gas turbine would give 344 MW output. A separate air compression plant would be used. Economic evaluations indicate that, for gas prices above $1.95 per GJ, a 344 MW CAES plant is more economic for intermediate/reserve load duty than simple cycle gas turbines.

The data reported in this bulletin are largely the result of experiments conducted by the Salt Lake City station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of metallurgical research of the University of Utah. The work on lead is only one of the phases of the investigations carried on at that station during the years 1914 to 1916. The results of similar work with zinc ores and with copper and other ores will be published in future reports of the bureau.

This section of the Handbook deals with general principles to be evaluated in the development of a mining operation. It addresses the major issues that must be examined to fully evaluate a mining venture. Of course, one of the main topics to be evaluated is mine planning, which is covered in more detail in other sections (13, 17) of the Handbook and should be referenced in mine development projects. The topics to be discussed in this introduction include equipment and supplies, infrastructure, utilities, and project management. In any of the aspects mentioned, the current existing conditions at or near the mine site must be evaluated. This will include assessment of current use of utilities, infrastructure, housing, equipment suppliers, etc., as well as anticipated growth, both in the supply aspect of these systems as well as projected usage on these systems. After full assessment of both these aspects, an evaluation must be made as to the requirements the project will place on these items. Assessment must be made as to any up-grades required to bring the project on line, what impact the project will have on existing or expanded systems, and anticipated future growth impacts on support systems not only of the project but of other surrounding industry and urban devel-opment

"The measured response of residential structures is a critical indicator of troublesomeor potentially damaging ground vibrations. A study was conducted to evaluate theresponse of structures situated in the periphery of four open-pit coal mines in India. Although, most of the structures were at far-off distances from the present blasting sites, an attempt was made to document the response of structures to blast vibration for future applications to optimize the blast designs for the safety of the structures. The study involved a total 215 blasts, employing one-, two- and three-hole calibration study, and production blasts. The bench height varied from 7.5 m to 42 m, and boreholes loaded with emulsion and slurry explosives were 250, 260, 270 and 310 mm in diameter. The explosive detonated in a blast were between 300-198400 kg whereas in a delay it was 33-24800 kg. Up to 12 tri-axial vibration sensors were located in overburden along a linear array from 25 m to 6.5 km distance from the blasts. Altogether, 1512 blast vibration signatures were recorded. Production and specially fi red single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency. The fundamental frequency of the structures ranged between 3.13 to 10.6 Hz, the same as those of the ground vibrations. The amplifi cation of vibration in the structures was in the range of 1.6 to 5.6. The study details the interaction between ground vibrations and selected structures, and the means to reduce amplifi cation of vibrations in the structures and persistence of vibrations through improved blast design."

In 1950, about a third of the world?s population lived in cities. That figure has steadily risen throughout the following decades. Now it is believed that about 60 percent of the estimated 8.1 billion people in 2030 will be living in urban areas. The strain on infrastructure in cities in the developed world is already showing. And the rapid growth in developing nations today is adding to the shortage of materials, equipment and labor needed to keep up with this growth. So, while materials and labor may be in short supply, there is no shortage of work for the underground tunneling and space industry. In June, 718 of those professionals from around the world were in San Francisco, CA for the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME. The attendees spent the three days of technical sessions listening to international authors discuss the state of the industry, new technologies that have become available and updates on major tunneling projects throughout the world. The accompanying exhibit attracted 79 vendors, who displayed the latest in tunneling and underground space equipment and services. In addition to the technical sessions and the exhibit, the NAT featured three short courses ? ?DRB Process Update Workshop,? ?Soft Ground Tunneling Technologies? and ?Underground Blasting Technology and Risk Management.? And the post-meeting field trip to the Devils Slide tunneling project near San Francisco was sold out.

This report on water requirements for the New Mexico mineral industry includes data on industrial operations closely related to mineral production. It contains general information concerning public water supplies at five principal cities and a short discussion of water needs for agriculture. Background data are presented regarding the geography, hydrography, and water laws of New Mexico, as well as precipitation and evaporation characteristics of the State. Most of the information on source, quantity, distribution, cost, and treatment of water was obtained in interviews with company representatives. Water systems at 46 operations are illustrated by schematic waterflow diagrams. The study revealed that the New Mexico mineral industry in 1962 used about 16 billion gallons of new water and reused 152 billion gallons, a total usage of 168 billion gallons. Consumption amounted to 7.6 billion gallons. Of the 16 billion gallons of new water, 11.9 billion gallons was "self- supplied" from ground water sources, and 2.6 billion gallons was self supplied from surface sources. Approximately 1.5 billion gallons was purchased. Some of the water from company-owned wells is piped as far as 30 miles. Reported costs of the self-supplied new water range from 1 to 20 cents per 1,000 gallons and average 8 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. Inadequacy of the supply of new water at many operations necessitates large-scale recirculation. Reported costs for recirculating water (power and maintenance) average 1.8 cents per 1,000 gallons. For the entire New Mexico mineral industry in 1962, the value of product was $42 per 1,000 gallons of new water intake and $88 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Analyses of 40 water samples, listed in the appendix, show the wide range in water quality at plants throughout the State. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the mineral industry indicate that the total demand for new water will increase from the 16 billion gallons used in 1962 to 24 billion gallons in 1980, a 50 percent increase; and to 36 billion gallons in 2000, which is 125 percent more than the 1962 intake of new water.

The concept of metal zoning has long been recognized (Spurr, 1907, 1923; Emmons, 1924, 1926; Lindgren, 1933; Rateman, 1950), although it has been considered indistinct for most epithermal districts. The geometric relation of barren zones of hydrother-mally altered rock to ore deposits was emphasized in the work of Lovering (1941, 1949, 1950), Sales and Meyer (1948, 1949, 19501, Burbank (1941, 1950), Schwartz (1939, 1950), and Kerr (1947). Lovering (op. cit.) and Sales and Meyer (op. cit.) emphasized the consistent presence of barren alteration envelopes enclosing individual ore bodies, particularly of the vein type. Schwartz (1950) noted a difference between the distribution of alteration zones described by Lovering and by Sales and Meyer, as compared with those associated with the porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest. The disseminated deposits of the Southwest usually occur within large bodies of altered rock whereas most veins do not. In the following discussion the mineralization process is conceived of consisting of two distinct phases: pre-ore nonmetallic alteration and metallization. In the present investigation the position, size, and shape of all known hydro thermally altered areas and the position, size, and metal type of all known ore deposits were plotted on base maps of southwestern and west-central Colorado (Figure 1). The maps indicate a generally consistent geometric relation between altered and metallized areas. The addition of alteration to the pattern of metal deposits establishes a temperature zoning pattern of much greater clarity than that formed by the epithermal metal deposits alone, and allows a more precise definition of mineral belts. The center of strongest mineralization is indicated to be the area of greatest barren alteration, and metal deposits are grouped about it both under structural control and crudely in response to temperature zoning. The combination of an area of strong alteration and associated marginal clusters of metal deposits is defined as a mineral district. The strong similarity in individual deposits, in groups of different types of deposits, and in the alteration-metallization relation in districts throughout the region implies that a single metallogenic province is represented in southwestern and west-central Colorado. The occurrence of deposits in Tertiary voi-canics indicates a late Tertiary metallogenic epoci., although an early Tertiary epoch is known locally as at Ouray. This paper describes block -caving methods and practices of the Bagdad Copper Corp. in Yavapai County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The story of the Bagdad caving operation is of particular interest because the ore body was not as thick as at other mines where the method had been successful . At Bagdad the caving method worked very well as a smallscale operation of 300 tons per day but was abandoned when production was increased to 2,000 tons per day . The Bagdad mine is in western Yavapai County , Ariz . , about 22 miles northwest of Hillside , a station on the Phoenix -Ash Fork branch of the Atchison , Topeka & Santa Fe Railway system ( fig . 1 ) . Copper ore now is mined by open -pit methods . The ore is concentrated , and the concentrates are trucked to Hillside and shipped by rail to a custom smelter . Some molybdenum sulfide is produced as a byproduct . This report gives a brief history of the district , describes the ore de- posit , and outlines the methods of prospecting , exploration , and estimation of ore . Development and former underground mining , including stope preparation , stoping , and transportation , are described . Extraction of ore , production rates , miscellaneous operations related to mining , wage and contract systems , and method of concentration are described . The final section discusses mining costs . The underground mine was visited by the author several times between 1937 and 1942 , and some information has been drawn from personal notes . The property again was visited in June 1957 , and maps and plans for this paper were furnished by the company at that time ; they have been edited to conform with Bureau of Mines format . The underground mine could not be visited then because it had been closed in 1948 when open -pit mining was begun .

ClameR,* Philadelphia, Pa.—Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early days, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used. Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec® Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades.Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue Rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill.Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times.This paper explores the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process, and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. The characteristics of weak floor strata associated with actively mined coal seams in Illinois are very important from ground stability point of view and, in many cases, are the governing factors in determining the size of pillars and mine openings. Laboratory and field getotechnical characterization studies of weak floor strata were conducted at six mines during the period 1985-1988. Correlation analysis among engineering index properties, and laboratory, and field determined strength-deformation properties were conducted to identify simple tests which can be used to estimate ultimate bearing capacity and deformation properties of immediate floor strata. It was concluded that the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) and strength- deformation properties of the weak floor strata can be estimated from simple tests such as, natural moisture content, atterberg limits, and axial swelling strain. Indirect tensile strength was found to be a better estimator of UBC than unconfined compressive strength.

An examination was made of the filtration characteristics of a haematite slurry using a range of polyacrylamide based flocculants in solutions containing up to 3 per cent sodium chloride. The polymers used were "high" and "Iow" molecular weight and had from 0 to 40 per cent charged groups.Increasing charge density tends to reduce the dose required to achieve optimum performance measured by filtration rate and by cake moisture. In general increased salt addition tends to increase the dosage required to achieve these optima. Both these observations result from the change in polymer extension and accord well with the bridging theory of flocculation.The dose required for optimal cake moisture is up to three times greater than that required for optimal filtration rate. This effect is reasonably consistent for all polymers studied and appears to be non-linearly dependent on salt concentration, with the difference being small at 0 and 3 per cent but quite significant at 1 per cent.

The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements.
