5. Crystallography. - The subject of Crystallography includes the description of the characters of crystals in general; of the various forms of crystals and their division into classes and systems; of the methods of studying crystals, including the determination of the mathematical relations of their faces, and the measurement of the angles between them; finally, a description of compound or twin crystals, of irregularities in crystals, of crystal- line aggregates, and of pseudomorphous crystals. 6. Definition of a Crystal.- A crystal * is the regular polyhedral form, bounded by smooth surfaces, which is assumed by a chemical compound, under the action of its intermolecular forces, when passing, under suitable conditions, from the state of a liquid or gas to that of a solid. As expressed in the foregoing definition, a crystal is characterized, first, by its definite internal molecular structure, and, second, by its external form. A crystal is the normal form of a mineral species, as of all solid chemical com- pounds; but the conditions suitable for the formation of a crystal of ideal perfection in symmetry of form and smoothness of surface are never fully realized. Further, many species usually occur not in distinct crystals, but in massive form, and in some exceptional cases the definite molecular structure is absent. 7. Molecular Structure in General.- By definite molecular structure is meant the special arrangement which the physical units, called molecules, assume under the action of the forces exerted between them during the formation of the solid. Some remarks are given in a later article (p. 22 et seq.) in regard to the kinds of molecular arrangement theoretically possible, and their relation to the symmetry of the different systems and classes of crystals.

Introduction During the past ten years, shaft sinking has been going on continuously at Inco and new shafts and shaft extensions have been sunk under a broad diversity of conditions. The Murray mine and the Stobie section of the Frood-Stobie mine have?been opened and a main hoisting and supply shaft has been sunk at each of these mines; No. 2 shaft at Murray was sunk initially from surface to 1,960 feet and is now being extended; No. 7 shaft at Stobie was sunk from surface to 3,105 feet. No. 2 shaft at Garson has been extended from 2,200 feet to 3,200 feet in depth. At Levack, No. 2 shaft is being extended from 1,860 feet to 2,850 feet for ore hoisting from the 2,650 lev el. At Creighton, No. 6 shaft, collared on 52 level, was sunk 1,740 feet to a total depth of 5,563 feet below surface. It is the deepest Inco working. At Creighton, also, No. 7 shaft is being sunk from surface to the 30 level to handle the ore from caving operations. Ail Inco main hoisting and supply shafts sunk during the past twenty years have been vertical rectangular shafts equipped with two cages and two ore skips. The cages are standard and interchangeable for all shafts except Garson No. 2; they are single-deck, 13 ft. 4 in. by 5 ft. 2 in. inside and are designed to carry a maximum material load of 16,000 lb. The man load is 48 men. Skip capacities at the several shafts vary from 8 to 15 tons. Forty-two hundred feet bas been established as the standard vertical lift, and the permanent hoisting equipment at each shaft is designed for eventual hoisting from that depth.

Since addressing the Institute a year ago on The Future of the Copper Industry (l), many things have happened, most of them bad. It has been a hard year for profits and prophets. It was, therefore, with consider-able perturbation that I accepted the gracious invitation of your Committee to reappear. On reviewing my remarks of a year ago, I. have wondered whether, under pressure of more important matters, the Committee had neglected to make a note of them, or whether they felt that further explanations from me were in order. In either event, I am glad that I am here and welcome the opportunity to make any contribution I can to a clearer understanding of the problems of copper to those concerned. The English-speaking nations own 80 per cent of the present world-production of the metal. Col. P. E. Barbour, Secretary of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and I recently completed an estimate of the known world resources of copper. We placed the figure, in round numbers, at 100,000,000 tons of metal. Of this amount, about one-third lies in the United States, one-third in the British Empire, and one-third in South America; and all but 4 per cent of this is owned by British Empire and United States capital. Our figures do not include any estimates for Russia, Japan, or Europe, on which there are no available data. It is true, consequently, that the British Empire and the United States are the ones concerned. It seems to me to be a matter of great importance to the world at large, and of even greater importance to those nations themselves, that the known sources of supply of this metal, so essential both in peace and war, rest so strongly in their hands. I cannot believe that in the long run they will neglect their responsibilities in the wise administration of these resources.

Abstract - A consistency-driven pairwise comparisons method for mineral potential assessment is presented, using a simplified case of volcanic-associated massive sulfide type deposits as an example. Geological, geochemical, and geophysical criteria are considered on two levels: local and regional. The local geological criteria are subdivided into stratigraphy, lithology, alteration and/or mineralization, and structure. The concept of geomerit index and a procedure for computing this index are introduced. The method of consistency-driven pairwise comparisons can be combined with other quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, enhancing them by incorporation of nonmeasurable geological criteria (e.g., stratigraphy or lithology) and by computation of weights. The consistency-driven approach allows experts to refine at-times subjective judgments concerning exploration and land-use planning, and contributes to the improvement of mineral-potential assessments.

The testing procedures of the u.s. Mine Safety and Health Administration specify that intrinsic safety acceptance tests be conducted using a standard tungsten-cadmium electrode configuration in the break-flash apparatus. However, in realistic mining environments, other materials may be more likely sources of sparking. Information defining the probability of spark ignition between common materials such as aluminum, brass, copper, lead, tin, cold-rolled steel, and stainless steel is of more practical value in determining ignition hazards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the influence of material on the ignition probability using the breakflash apparatus. By comparing ignition currents or ignition voltages corresponding to a probability of one ignition per thousand sparks to those found previously for cadmium, a margin of safety may be estimated for each material. This report presents the results of an investigation into the influence of disk electrode material on the probability of ignition.

Discussion of the paper Of JAMES JOHNSTON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133. CHAIRMAN E. GIBBON SPILSBURY.-I would like to call attention to the fact shown in this paper that less than five years or perhaps seven years ago nobody had thought it possible to cyanide with success silver ores. The cyaniding of silver and gold ores was first of all started in Mexico, and gradually extended to this country in the case of the silver ores alone. The average extraction, I think, for the metals in Mexico, in the case of the silver ore, is less than 85 per cent., whereas here, in the case of a very complex ore, carrying a high percentage of sulphur and arsenic, and other objectionable elements, the ore has been treated so as to extract an average of 95 per cent. of the silver contents of the ore. It is really a phenomenal revolution in the metallurgy of silver ores which has been demonstrated and worked out at the Nipissing mines. GEORGE A. PACKARD, Boston, Mass.-I would like to suggest a slight modification, perhaps, of the statement which is made that no one considered cyaniding of silver ores up to five, or perhaps seven years ago, because in 1897, when I was at Mercur, Utah, one mill near there was operating on silver ores. It did not operate very successfully from a commercial standpoint, because they did not have a great deal of ore, but the extraction, I was told, was very satisfactory, and I am quite confident that it was, because, as suggested by the name, Chloride Point, the ores were silver chloride ores, and of course very easily soluble. Some years before that, in 1892, I made some tests myself. I spent three months making tests on more or less complex silver sulphide ores at Virginia City, Mont., and while our tests on the plain sulphide ores, finely ground, were quite successful, on account of the presence of a small amount of copper we did not work out a satisfactory solution of the problem at that time; although since then a cyanide plant has been erected and for at least eight years these ores have been treated by cyaniding at Virginia City, and the mill is still in operation. The period of five to seven years should, therefore, be modified considerably, in justice to the pioneers in the cyanide processes. REGINALD E. An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between ASTM and Micum tumbler data and to develop equations that would enable the conversion of data from one test method for comparison with those determined by the other , and thereby facilitate the international exchange of data . Relative strengths of 18 commercially produced cokes were determined by ASTM and Micum tumblers and ASTM shatter test . Two of the samples were coke produced for foundry use , and two were produced in beehive ovens . The remaining 14 samples were produced for blast furnace consumption and had ASTM tumbler stabilities of 36 to 58. Statistical procedures were used to relate the three test methods and also to evaluate the effect of charge weights , top sizes of coke , and types of screens specified by the two standard tumbler procedures , square - hole wire mesh for the ASTM tumbler and punched round - hole for the Micum . A significant result was that the data obtained with like screens have a higher degree of correlation with a smaller standard deviation than data from the screens specified for each tumbler .

Noise control of existing pneumatic drills is difficult and runs into cost, performance and weight penalties. A need exists for a start-from-scratch approach for quiet pneumatic rock drills. The designs based on Leavell Principles which has been successfully used in demonstrating a quiet and vibration free paving breaker, is the concept chosen here. This report shows the feasibility of a quiet stoper for drilling roof bolt holes in coal mines. The work is directly applicable to pneumatic percussive rock drills. The report shows an oscillator based on patented Leavell concepts which results in a vibration free tool and noiseless exhaust. Dynamics of the oscilator is analyzed. Independant rotation of drill rod is provided by an air motor (screw expander) and flushing of cuttings is accomplished by an air ejector in a compact lower housing. The feasibility of no exhaust noise, low drill machine noise, and vibration free casing is discussed.

High-nugget gold orebodies are difficult to model in 3D because samples from diamond drill core are generally too small to provide reliable estimates of the gold content of the larger body of rock, and therefore interpolation of gold assay values between drill holes is also unreliable. As a result, gold resources are generally underestimated in areas of high nugget. In practice, proxies for gold mineralisation, such as presence of alteration, specific structures or high vein density, have been used by geologists to predict rocks which are favourable for mineralisation. However, there has been no automated method for combining the predictive capabilities of several proxies, except by human judgement.We have been developing a method to combine several different types of geological features or geochemical analyses into a single measure using conditional probability. Conditional probability provides a meaningful numerical measure for the favourability of rocks for containing high-grade gold mineralisation. This measure can be interpolated in the exploration space, providing a sound basis for a 3D model of the orebody. We have developed this technique using data from the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, which is a high-nugget orebody hosted in a structurally complex Archaean greenstone belt and which has historically proved to be a very challenging orebody to model.CITATION:Hill, E J, Nugus, M J, Clark, F, Oliver, N H S, Cleverley, J S and Carswell, J T, 2013. Fluorspar is the commercial name for fluorite, which is the mineral having the composition CaF2, calcium fluoride. Its valuable properties are due to its content of fluorine, and it is the only important commercial source of that element. The name is derived from the Latin fluere, to flow, because the mineral melts easily and is a good flux. History The mineral has been known since Greek and Roman times, when it was used for drinking cups and ornamental slabs. Various peoples including the Chinese and the American Indians have carved ornaments from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola, who wrote about it in 1546.1 Mining began in England about 1775 15 and at various places in the United States during the period 1820 to 1840.28 Substantial production was achieved first in the period 1888 to 1900 in consequence of the development and widespread adoption of the basic open hearth method of making steel, in which fluorspar is used as a flux. After that, production and usage was stimulated by growth in the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries and accelerated by World Wars I and II. The organic fluorides called "Freons" entered the picture in 1931, and the use of anhydrous HF as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel blends began in 1942. The development of the froth flotation process in the late 1920's, a differential flotation scheme for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and other minerals in the 1930's, and the application of heavy-media concentrating methods to the treatment of low-grade ores in the 1940's were outstanding technological contributions that enabled increased production of fluorspar concentrates. Composition and Properties Fluorite in its purest form contains 51.1 pct calcium and 48.9 pct fluorine. Substitution of small percentages of cerium and yttrium for calcium have been noted.4 Mechanical inclusions of gases and fluids such as petroleum and water, and of other solid minerals such as pyrite, marcasite, and chalcopyrite are common. The fluorspar of commerce contains attached and admixed mineral impurities, chiefly calcite, quartz, barite, celestite, and various sulfides. It is interesting that the purest commercial form in which the mineral is sold, acid grade concentrate, contains a minimum of 97 pct CaF2, and as such is of comparable purity to many reagents used in chemical laboratories. Fluorite has a marked tendency to occur in large, well-formed crystals sometimes six to ten inches on a side. It crystallizes in the isometric system, frequently forming cubic and octahedral crystals or combinations thereof. The mineral also occurs in massive and in earthy forms, and in crusts or globular aggregates with radial fibrous texture. Crystalline fluorspar exhibits a great array of colors, from colorless and water clear to yellow, blue, purple, green, rose, red, bluish and purplish black, and brown. The colors are often arranged in alternating bands parallel to cube faces. They may be altered by exposure to X-rays, heat, ultraviolet light, and pressure, and are caused by a variety of factors including the presence of trace impurities and displaced ions in the lattice. Sometimes the changes induced by X-rays can be reversed by ultraviolet radiation. The mineral has a hardness of 4, and is the model of that hardness on the Mobs scale.

"Since the 1980s, China has become the predominant producer of REEs. Recently, it introduced REE export quotas and this started a world-scale REE exploration rush. REE resources are concentrated in carbonatite-related deposits, peralkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, REE ± P veins, ion adsorption clays, placers, and some deep ocean sediments. REEs could also be derived as a by-product of phosphate fertilizer, U processing, Ti-Zr-bearing placers, and exploitation of Olympic Dam-type sub-type of IOCG deposits. The ideal REE development target would be located in a politically stable jurisdiction such as Canada. REE grade and tonnage, mineralogy, and permissive metallurgy are some of the key technical factors that could be used to screen projects. INTRODUCTIONAccording to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the term “rare earth elements” (REEs) encompasses yttrium (Y), scandium (Sc), and the lanthanide series: lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pm), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), and lutetium (Lu). This definition is used throughout this paper.REEs are subdivided into light (LREE) and heavy (HREE) categories. LREEs include, Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd and HREE include Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Y. Promethium (Pm) does not occur in nature. Concentrations of individual LREEs in the upper crust of the Earth are comparable to those of base metals. Even the least abundant REE (Lu) is about 200 times more abundant than gold.The production of REEs, reported in the form of oxides (REOs), for 2011 is estimated at 140 000 t (Figure 1a). Although high technology industries can substitute several REEs with other materials, these substitutes are typically more expensive or less effective than the REEs they replace. A number of countries, including the United States, consider several REEs essential for national security, their economy, and a general reduction in green house gas emissions. The forecasted demand for individual LREOs is much higher than that of HREOs (Figure 2). Dy, Eu, Tb, Nd, and Y are essential for the US economy and subject to predicted supply disruptions (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010)."

The U.S. economy boomed in 1965, completing its fifth consecutive year of expansion. Although the advance was somewhat irregular, previous records for production, sales, employment, and income were topped. During the first few months of 1965, as the economy recovered from the depressing effects of the automobile strikes of late 1964, increases were unusually large. The gains moderated in early spring, but were stimulated at midyear by sharply rising capital outlays, excise tax cuts, in? creased Social Security payments, and accelerated Viet-Nam defense expenditures. Gross national product (GNP) in cur-rent dollars rose $49.5 billion or 7.8 percent, to a total of S681.2 billion. In constant dollars (effects of price changes eliminated), GNP increased 5.9 percent, a rate considerably higher than the historical postwar annual average growth of 3.5 per-cent. Demand increased in most final markets and was especially strong for business fixed investment and consumption expenditures. With the exception of construction, most of the increases in GNP were real, since prices increased less than 2 percent.

Use of fluorspar in steel refining operations is one of the environmental concerns and as such reduced consumption of this material or substitution of the same is one of the objectives. Industrial runs were carried out at Aperam Steel making convertor unit (Timóteo, MG, Brazil) using recycled/briquetted slag for partial or complete substitution of fluorspar. Samples were collected from the metal bath and slag after oxygen blowing to assess dephosphorization with several combinations of recycled/briquetted slag and fluorspar. The results showed that partial substitution of fluorspar by BOF slag briquettes did not affect the efficiency of dephosphorization. In general average Phosphorus content was reduced to 0.010% in the case of partial substitution compared to 0.016% in the regular refining procedure with no substitution. This replacement also resulted in 40% reduction of the fluorspar consumption in the converter

It is the object of this paper to discuss various options for improving the hematite process in terms of increased throughput hence lower capital cost and production of saleable quality hematite. With reference to increasing the throughput of the process, it has now been determined via the analysis of Akita Zinc Co's continuous industrial autoclave performance data that the process kinetics is limited by the rate of the hydrolytic precipitation reaction. By correlating the hydrolytic precipitation rate to supersaturation ratio, it is shown that accelerated kinetics can be achieved via the following measures: (1) in-situ neutralization with addition of zinc calcine; (2) elevation of temperature; and (3) dilution of feed; of which, the first one was retained for further evaluation. According to presented estimates, addition of calcine, amounting to only 2.6% of the total zinc calcine processed, can allow for shortening the retention time by at least 50%. Such drastic shortening of retention time may be either used to increase the throughput of a given autoclave circuit or alternatively to release autoclave capacity for clean hematite production. Hydrothermal treatment of the crude hematite product proved effective in producing clean hematite as according to laboratory tests, hence allowing the sulphur content of hematite to be reduced from around 4% to less than 1%. A conceptual flowsheet incorporating in-situ neutralization for accelerated kinetics with hydrothermal upgrading of crude hematite without sacrificing production capacity and with minimum upset of the plant's water balance is described.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a method for increasing the leaching rate of bulk superalloy scrap to facilitate recycling and recovery of critical metals such as Ni, Co, and Cr. Three superalloys were investi- gated, the cast-nickel-base superalloy IN-738, the wrought-nickel-base superalloy Rene-41, and the cast-cobalt-base superalloy Mar-M-509. Superalloys melted with 20, 30, 40, and 50 pct Al metal to form inter- metallic compounds were easily crushed to a convenient particle size and reacted rapidly with acid solutions which dissolved the metals. For example, leaching 1/2-in pieces of unalloyed IN-738 with excess 6N HC1 at 95° C for 2 h dissolved about 0.5 pct, while leaching 10 g of minus 20-mesh 30 pct Al-70 pct IN-738 with excess 6N HC1 at 95° C for 2 h dis- solved 96.2 pct.

The history of mineral processing in general and flotation in particular is long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. Building on the ever-improving fundamental understanding of the underlying science, the most significant trend in flotation has been the putting into practice the learnings from trailblazers such as Professor Fuerstenau that has given the confidence that enabled an ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against global trends such as that of falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. In addition, we see that globally, the social license to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure and, at the very least, is under much more rigorous scrutiny. In this paper, we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10–20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation, as we know it, will change significantly.

In many underground mining applications where-dry fill is used, only a token acknowl- edgement of the fill properties is given. It is the aim of this paper to induce mining engineers to consider dry fill as an engineer- ing material rather than a mass to place in unwanted voids. Dry fill is generally cheap, inert and readily available, but it can still contribute to mining performance. In particular, the choice of the dry fill becomes more critical as stope sizes increase, controlled choked draws are used or pillar recovery introduced. Selection must be initiated from an evaluation of the role of the fill in the mining operation. In most cases the fill must be chosen before quarrying begins and an investigation must be made of available sources and appropriate quarrying methods. Some of the properties of fill are described together with evaluation techniques. A com- parison of placement conditions is limited by the complexities of material flow and degrada- tion: However, field and model tests can aid interpretation in these cases. Examples are given of aspects of dry fill selection and their incorporation in mining design.
