CRUSHING and concentration flow-sheets of western mills have become greatly simplified and more or less standardized of recent years with the introduction of modern grinding methods and flotation. Improvement has not stopped, however, and advancement is continually being made in crushing and milling practice. A case in point, where remarkable improvements in efficiency have resulted from comparatively minor changes in the flow-sheet, is in the New Cornelia mill of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co. at Ajo, Ariz. This mill, completed in 1924 for the concentration ,of the sulfide ores of the New Cornelia mine, was originally designed for a 5000-ton capacity. Reconciliation is a powerful tool used by mining operations to compare the mass and grade of ore produced with what was estimated before mining. The primary objective of reconciliation is to verify that the estimated planned metal production is achieved during processing, allowing issues to be identified for which adjustments can be made throughout the mining value chain to improve recovery and maximise efficiency. Traditionally, the mine plan is based on estimated mine grades using sampled exploration drill hole or blasthole grades. Reconciliation discrepancies between the mine plan and mill are common due to such factors as insufficient or non-representative sampling, poorly conceived models, or unrecognised blast movement. MineSense Technologies Limited® (MTL) has developed an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor-based ore classification system that is installed on mining equipment to provide real-time grade estimates of run-of-mine material at bucket, truck, or belt-scale. Bucket level grade estimates provide insights into grade variations at the mine face that were never before available. This data set eliminates some of the leading causes of reconciliation discrepancies and enables tracking of tonnages and grades from the mine face to the processing plant at bucket resolution with confidence. Bucket-by-bucket grades at the mine face enable dynamic optimisation of the mine plan to stabilise the mill feed grade through blending of mine and stockpile loads. Beyond stabilising feed grade, Mine to Mill reconciliation combined with the full XRF spectrum response can generate proxy relationships to ore characteristics like hardness and recovery. These properties can then be predicted at the mine face, enabling further optimisation of the downstream mill feed, not only for grade, but also for power and water consumption, reagent addition, and recovery. This paper presents the benefits of MTL technology for grade reconciliation and mill performance optimisation at a Cu Mine in BC (Canada).

ANALYSIS of 117 occurrences of bumps in coal mines shows that 67.6 percent are associated with pillar-line points.4 Slabbing and splitting pillars, development, and other unfavorable milling practices in abutment areas may be a contributory or the primary cause of bumps. The cure for pillar-line bumps is to recognize areas that can be expected to become highly stressed and to project the mining plan and operations to eliminate such areas insofar as possible. If such areas cannot be eliminated, then the mining plan and operations should be projected to avoid the necessity of disturbing these areas before the stresses have been dissipated.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/ Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. The flotation chemicals are important in mineral processing, and new progress is made in this area day by day. For sanidine purification, some commercial collectors, which can be harmful to the environment, are used. In that respect, the poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers, which are non-toxic for the environment, are good candidates for flotation applications. In this study, the second-generation PAMAM dendrimer was used as a collector to remove magnetite from sanidine by microflotation method, and obtained results were compared with commercial collectors. The results showed that the PAMAM dendrimer is an efficient and selective collector for magnetite. PAMAM adsorption mechanism was determined by zeta potential and FTIR spectra. According to the microflotation results, 87.76% of magnetite recovered at pH 8 by using PAMAM as a collector. It was found that the flotation recovery with the PAMAM dendrimers is similar to the Aero 704 between pH 2 and 6 but less between pH 6 and 9 and more between pH 9 and 12. All experiments were carried out five times and the standard deviation of all results was evaluated with p = 0.05 confidence interval. The second-generation PAMAM dendrimers can be an alternative flotation chemical to the commercial ones concerning usability at a wide pH range, recovery potential, and environmentally benign.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo estudar a incorporação da massa da poeira de aciaria elétrica (PAE), mediante adição em ferro-gusa (1,78% Si) à temperatura de 1.400 graus Celsius. A PAE é proveniente de uma usina siderúrgica produtora de aços longos. A adição da PAE ao ferro-gusa líquido será sob a forma como recebido, sob a forma de briquetes sem agitação do ferro-gusa líquido e sob a forma de briquetes com agitação do ferro-gusa líquido. Previamente, a PAE foi caracterizada utilizando-se as seguintes técnicas: análise química, análise granulométrica, área de superfície específica, difração de raios-X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e análise de micro-regiões por EDS. A realização dos experimentos de fusão, em escala de laboratório, ocorreu em um forno vertical tubular com controlador de temperatura. Os experimentos de fusão para avaliar a incorporação da massa de PAE utilizaram cadinhos de grafite. Após o resfriamento, ferro gusa e escória remanescentes no cadinho foram pesados objetivando efetuar um balanço de massa. Um fluxo de gás inerte (argônio) foi mantido no interior do forno durante a realização dos experimentos.

In 1927 the Carbonization Committee of the American Gas Association proposed cooperation with the Bureau of Mines in the development of suitable methods for determining the carbonizing properties of American coals. It was further proposed to apply these methods in the testing of representative coals and to make the information obtained available to the public through Government publications. A cooperative agreement was signed whereby the Gas Association contributed part of the funds necessary for beginning the project and appointed a committee to consult and advise the Bureau in the work. The Advisory Committee has been reappointed each year, and the Bureau has had the benefit of its advice. The composition and carbonizing properties of 33 coals previously tested have been given in technical papers of the Bureau of Mines and in short reports published for the most part in the Proceedings of the American Gas Association. A complete list of publications on the work previous to 1937 is appended to this report. The present report gives the composition and carbonizing properties of seven additional coals from West Virginia. The data include results of blending tests in which Beckley led low-volatile coal was used with all the high-volatile coals except the Alma coal, with which Pocahontas No. 4 coal was used.

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

THE senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallographic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point A, at about 900° C., iron passes from the gamma condition to a. new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transforma¬tion, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron. Were it possible to retain at room temperature pure iron but partially transformed, it seems probable that a Widmanstättian structure, or rather, as later explained, a martensitic structure would be observed (Fig. 1), consisting of alpha iron at the boundaries and at the octahedral planes, and of a groundmass of gamma iron. In order to confirm, if possible, the accuracy of that view, a number of experiments were conducted. Polished samples of electrolytic iron were heated in a vacuum, maintained in the gamma range for several hours and quenched in different media. It was hoped by such means to produce and retain on the polished surfaces a pattern which would reveal the mechanism of the allotropic transformation. The samples were placed in evacuated quartz tubes, heated to 1000° C. and held 2 hr. at that temperature. The tubes were then immersed in the quenching bath. Iced brine and liquid air were used first. The polyhedral austenitic structure existing at the time of immersion was very clearly revealed (Fig. 2). This is generally ascribed to iron volatilizing at the grain boundaries.

In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,310-acre Diablo Mountain (Additional) study area (OR-001-058), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources and occurrences. The study area lies along the east shore of saline Summer Lake in Lake County, OR, about 145 miles southeast of Bend and 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. The climate is semiarid and temperate, and the study area is almost treeless. Geologically, the (Additional) study area is in a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins, characterized by interior drainage. The area is mainly underlain by unconsolidated Quaternary and Pleistocene lake and playa sediments, which may include subsurface evaporite mineral deposits and resources. Near the center of the eastern margin of the study area are an occurrence of dolomitic limestone of unknown extent, and an area of basalt outcrop totaling 1.5 square miles. A veneer of windblown sand covers about one-half the study area.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in and above an operating coal mine, McElroy Mine, located near Moundsville, Nest Virginia. The electromagnetic environment created by 300 volt dc and 480 volt ac machinery was measured. In one technique noise was measured over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. The noise was recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape. The noise data was later transformed to give spectral plots. In the other technique, noise amplitudes were recorded at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient length of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific, measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots.

As a bubble travels through the pulp region of a flotation cell, it will collect the most hydrophobic particles of an intermediate particle size range, this being the primary source of true flotation selectivity. Despite its role on bubble-particle attachment, however, particle hydrophobicity is still missing a mathematical definition that can be used for plant simulation. In this paper, particle hydrophobicity is defined in terms of the induction time necessary for attachment and then linked to the mass of collector adsorbed per particle. This allows particle hydrophobicity to be written as a function of density of collector adsorption as well as particle size and mineralogy. The model is calibrated from the experimental measurement of the flotation rate constant. Liberation data from an industrial flotation rougher is used for model validation. It is demonstrated that the model can describe a broad experimental dataset by means of a minimal number of parameters. Main industrial application is in simulating the effect of the chemical environment upon plant metallurgical performance.

The errors resulting from field sampling, sample preparation and analysis are investigated for drainage sediments derived from homogeneous sandstone, shale, limestone, basic igneous and granite lithologies as a background to a primary reconnaissance survey of England and Wales. Emission spectrographic analyses of approximately 350 samples for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Si, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr and V and atomic absorption analyses for Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn and Pb have been treated statistically. For routine broad-scale surveys analysis of the unground -80-mesh sediment fraction proves satisfactory. Sampling error between localities in a stream is shown to be less than spectrographic analytical error for many of the elements considered here, except where mineralisation (contamination) occurs, but exceeds the atomic absorption analytical errors in most cases. Unless it it critical to reduce the amount of between-site variability (having regard to analytical errors) in the regional survey, there appears to be no advantage in the use of a more sophisticated sampling technique. The utility of moving-average maps in reducing the width of the confidence belt around the regional 'geochemical surface', and thus compensating to some extent for the sampling errors, is also demonstrated.

In- situ rock stresses were determined by flatjack and borehole - deformation methods . Estimates of the stress distribution around a flatjack were obtained by a combination of flatjack and borehole - gage techniques . The investigations were part of a study , conducted jointly by the State of California and the Federal Bureau of Mines , to determine the stress in rock at the site of an underground powerplant for the Oroville Dam near Oroville , California . The stress distribution around each of three flatjacks was nonsymmetric ; however , stresses obtained from 9 flatjack and 157 borehole measurements are considered reasonably accurate for engineering purposes . The stress near the edge of the openings is between 800 and 1,600 psi ; the stress in the undisturbed rock is approximately 500 psi , nearly hydrostatic .

ALTHOUGH the mechanical cleaning of coal is carried out at plants on the surface, preparation is actually begun at the face in the mine. Here the character of the coal and the amount, character, and distribution of the impurities within the bed may be seen. Blasting methods, dust-allaying procedures, location of mining cut with respect to bands of impurity, and the practice of discarding segregated impurities underground, all have an important bearing on the successful operation of surface cleaning units. The most important single characteristic of both coal and its associated impurities from the standpoint of cleaning is specific gravity. Other characteristics related in one way or another to the preparation , of coal are rank, petrographic composition, structure and hardness, and friability. These and still other coal properties are discussed in the first section of this chapter and impurity characteristics in the second. COAL CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO PREPARATION Rank As a result of work done over a period of several years by committees of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association, standard specifications are now available showing the 'classification of coals according to rank and quality of grade.' The term "rank" expresses the degree to which the original coal-forming material has been changed by metamorphism through successive stages from peat to anthracite. Controlled thermolysis of gold(I) thiolate complex, [C14H29(CH3)3N][Au(SC12H25)2], at 180 °C for 5 h under an N2 atmosphere produces novel gold nanoparticles passivated by alkyl groups derived from the precursor complex, the TEM photograph of which shows spherical particles with average diameter 26 nm. Since Brust et al. reported the two-phase reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 to afford monodispersed gold nanoparticles passivated by alkanethiolate ligands (1), plenty of preparative investigations on gold nanoparticles (2,3) and its surface modification (3,4) have appeared, because of their potential applications in microelectronics (5). However, those preparative methods generally involve the reduction of AuCl4 - by reducing agent NaBH4 in the presence of suitable organic stabilizers such as alkanethiol (1-4), phosphane (5), quarternary ammonium salts (6), surfactants (7) or polymers (8). On the other hand, O?Brien et al. recently reported the preparation of organically capped gold nanoparticles at 190 °C, where tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and/or n-octadecylamine are used both as a reaction medium and as a passivating ligand (6), but this procedure also needs NaBH4 as reducing agent. Our strategy of novel preparative method of gold nanoparticles is the combination of reductive elimination of thiolate ligands and simultaneous attachment of organic moiety on the growing nuclei. Gold(I) thiolate complexes with ammonium cations were useful for our preparative method. We now report the controlled thermolysis of gold(I) thiolate complexes, [R(CH3)3N][Au(SC12H25)2] and [R(CH3)3N][Au(SC6H4-p-R?)2] (R= C14H29, C12H25; R?= C8H17, CH3), under an N2 atmosphere, where the powder of gold(I) thiolate complexes completely melts to afford the precursor liquid and then the liquid gradually decomposes. In spite of no use of reducing agent and solvent, reduction reaction is thermochemically induced to afford novel gold nanoparticles passivated by alkyl groups rather than by alkanethiolate ligands. Figure 1a shows a typical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image of gold nanoparticles prepared by thermolysis of [C14H29(CH3)3N][Au(SC12H25)2] at 180 °C for 5 h, indicating a controlled growth of spherical gold nanoparticles. As shown in Fig. 1b, these spherical gold nanoparticles display the size distribution ranging from 5 to 50 nm. Although the particle size is larger than that of thiol-derivatized gold nanoparticles (less than 5 nm) prepared by NaBH4 reduction (1-3), the aggregation of gold nuclei is smoothly regulated and the growth of core gold is limited to be 26 nm in average diameter in spite of thermal procedure.

COALEX Pry Limited operates two underground steaming coal mines on the western edge of the Sydney Basin near Lithgow, New South Wales. Baal Bone Colliery uses longwall technology for an output of over two million tonne/year while Clarence Colliery currently uses continuous miners and breaker line supports for an output of two million tonnelyear.A computerised geological database and modelling system has been implemented to service these mines routinely, as well as several outlying prospects. The database is constantly upgraded for drillhole information, surveyed spot levels on the surface and underground, quality sampling details, surveyed mine workings and geological mapping. This information is edited on a routine basis, allowing dynamic modelling of key aspects of geology for ongoing operations.
