A table of factors, for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, is presented. By use of the table the volume of helium in a container, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, can be calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium and the known internal volume of the container. The table covers a pressure range from a to 4,500 psia in 10 psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The calculation of volume requires a single multiplication, using a factor from the table and the known internal volume of the container. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.

The laboratory wear testing capabilities of the Bureau of Mines are described, Wear tests are used to support the Bureau?s research efforts toward reducing the wear of equipment used for mining and minerals processing and any wear involving a loss of strategic or critical materials. The emphasis is on abrasive wear because it accounts for most of the wear losses that occur in mining and minerals processing equipment, Spalling wear, caused by repetitive impact in grinding equipment, also is included, Ten abrasive wear tests, including high- stress and low-stress and two-body and three-body conditions, are described: dry-sand, rubber-wheel abrasive wear; Taber Abraser; abrasion resistance of refractory materials; dry-particle erosive wear; elevated-temperature, dry-particle erosive wear; low-angle slurry pot; jaw crusher gouging wear; ball mill wear; pin-on-drum abrasive wear; and high-speed impact gouging. Two repetitive impact tests are described: ball-on-block impact-spalling and ball-on-ball impact-spalling. Test equipment, procedures, and specimens are described, and typical test results are presented and discussed.

Under terms of cooperative agreements, the Federal Bureau of Mines Inter-mountain Experiment Station assisted the General Services Administration (GSA) in operating the manganese-ore purchasing depots at Deming. N. Mex., and Wenden, Ariz. A resident metallurgist stationed at the depots directed sampling of the ore lots for assaying, took samples for amenability testing, calculated acceptances for payments to shippers, and served as technical adviser to the depot manager. The Intermountain Experiment Station at Salt Lake City, Utah, tested the amenability of the ores to determine how much of the manganese could be recovered in concentrates assaying a minimum of 40 percent manganese (Mn) and containing a maximum of 16 percent iron (Fe), 15 percent silica (Si02) plus alumina (AI203), 0.3 percent phosphorus (P), and I percent copper (Cu) plus lead (Pb) plus zinc (Zn). All chemical analyses of the ores and test products were done at Salt Lake City. In all, 567 ore lots submitted to the Deming depot were tested by flotation to determine their amenability to concentration into specification-grade material; 421 lots were amenable, and 146 were unamenable, primarily because of high copper content or excessive silica or iron in the flotation concentrate. Chemical analyses totaling 42,700 were made on the ores submitted to the Deming depot and on the products of the amenability-test program.

Although metallurgical benefits of processing metals in a vacuum or reduced atmosphere have been realized for a hundred years, the problem of creating a vacuum in the range from 10-0 to 10-4 mm. of mercury in a moderately sized furnace chamber has been difficult to solve. The demand for these and lower pressures, with the advent of World War II, for separating the fission-able uranium isotope from its stable twin by the electromagnetic process, gave impetus to developing pumps capable of delivering extremely low pressures. With the release of data by the Atomic Energy Commission on methods of securing high vacuum in large equipment, steel companies took the initiative, and the growth of the vacuum-melting industry was assured. Vacuum-induction melting of steel in the United States began on a small scale in early 1945 and in 10 years grew to 60,000 pounds per month or 720,000 pounds per year. The years following 1954 showed tremendous expansion, culminating in 1958 in a capacity of more than 36 million pounds.

"IntroductionInco Limited operates nine underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin. These operation s are situated near the city of Sudbury, 589 km west of Montreal, and 363 km north of Toronto. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite , and pyrrhotite. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 51 000 tons per day.The total volume of fresh air supplied to the nine mines is six million cu.ft/min. There are 50 main fans in operation at these mines, powered by electric motors totaling 11 200 kW (15 000 hp).The trend in metal mining during recent years towards mechanization and high-tonnage production methods has greatly increased ventilation requirements. The now of air must quickly dilute and carry away diesel exhaust fumes, dust created by mining operations, and the fumes of the explosives used in blasting. Mechanical ventilation is required to obtain the necessary volume and control, as natural ventilation pressures alone are, for the most part, inadequate and unreliable. In the event of a mine fire or other needs, close control of ventilation is essential.There are two unique heating systems presently in operation at Inco: Creighton Natural Heat Exchanger and Stobie Ice Stopes."

At the Gateway Coal Co.'s mine, about 70 miles above Pittsburgh's Point on the Monongahela River, a battery of television cameras stands guard over what is billed as the longest conveyor belt system ever installed in a coal mine. In all, this system consists of 9% miles of 42- in. and 48-in. wide belting, and is capable of transporting 500 tph at a speed of 625 fpm from working face to the tipple located outside the mine. Gateway Coal, located near Waynesburg, Pa., is owned jointly by Jones & Laughlin. Steel Corp. (64% %), Pittsburgh Steel Co. (22lh%), and Shenango Inc. (13%). Managed by J & L, the mine is under a long-term lease from the Hillman Coal and Coke Co., which formerly operated it as the Emerald mine. Hillman produced 700,000 tons per year of metallurgical-grade coal from this mine, but since J & L et al. took over in 1962, annual output has increased to 1.7 million tons. Mine capacity will reach its peak early in 1964 when total production hits an annual rate of 3.1 million tons.

This Bureau of Mines study reviews the geological factors that affect methane in the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia, including overburden, coalbed structure, type of and changes in lithology above and below the Beckley coalbed, and presence of fractures in the coal and rock adjacent to the Beckley. Depending on the depth, the Beckley coalbed emits from 216 to 520 ft3 of methane per ton of coal mined, and the Bureau estimates that methane emission in a deep, extensively developed mine in this area may exceed 3,000 ft3 per day per ton of coal mined. Average face cleat and butt cleat trends in the Beckley coalbed measured underground are N 33° W and N 53° E, respectively. Close cleat spacing con- tributes to the friable nature of the Beckley and provides easy movement for methane and water. Because rider coals, splits, and carbonaceous shales may contribute methane to mine emissions, predictions of methane emission based on gas content of the Beckley coalbed alone may be conservative. Beckley coalbed reserves in the study area are 234 million tons. The gas content of the Beckley coalbed averages 407 ft3/ton, and the coalbed gas reserves are 108 billion ft3.

Growing demand for Li-based battery technologies is leading to an unprecedented growth in the lithium industry. Although innovation in battery technologies has pushed lithium into the spotlight, lithium was not always known for its application in batteries. The primary use of lithium—prior to the introduction of commercial lithium-ion batteries in the early 2000s—was in the ceramics, glass, grease, and the medical industry. Before being converted into usable forms, lithium products must be upgraded from the raw material. Processes for recovering lithium may involve: thermal treatment, water leaching, solar evaporation, ion exchange, carbonation, and electrodialysis. Presented, is a historical review of lithium applications and the different techniques of converting lithium-rich minerals and brines into usable products with additional discussion on future lithium extraction processes.

Introduction Today, geophysical exploration is recognized as a special science wedged between geology and mining. Universities and technical institutes have special professors teaching geophysics applied to oil and ore prospecting. The list of literature on geophysical exploration has grown from practically nothing at all some twenty-five years ago to ~ several thousands of books, some of them very imposing volumes. Most of the methods now used have been developed since the first World War, and very large systematic exploration campaigns have been carried out in many places, in many countries. It has been rather difficult to obtain enough information as to what is going on in Canada. However, since the Associate Committee on Geodesy and Geophysics of the National Research Council became more actively engaged in promoting geophysical research, it may be easier to obtain information and, in the future, the quarterly issued Canadian Geophysical Bulletin may throw considerable light on the current geophysical activities in Canada. Some twenty crews have been engaged the last few years in geophysical prospecting for ore. In the United States, between 500 and 600 crews are employed exclusively in geophysical prospecting. Most of these, however, are engaged in oil exploration. During the winter 1942-1943, the German Government employed some fifty crews on geophysical exploration, and some ten crews were working for private enterprises.

13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. A American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) estabelece, nas normas ASTM E112 e ASTM E1382, metodologias para estimar o tamanho médio dos cristais de maneira manual e semiautomática/automática, respectivamente. O presente trabalho propõe, além de uma nova metodologia semiautomática, duas metodologias automáticas para estimar o tamanhão médio de grão em materiais metálicos policristalinos monofásicos, assim como um parâmetro para avaliar a morfologia dos grãos. O tamanho de grão G ASTM encontrado utilizando os novos procedimentos testados se apresentou muito próximo aos valores obtidos pelos métodos padronizados, que também foram aplicados e usados como referência para avaliação da representatividade das medidas. Desse modo, os métodos propostos se apresentam como uma alternativa viável para estimar o referido parâmetro estrutural dos materiais metálicos.

The eastern U.S. contains vast reserves of thin seam coal deposits, particularly in the Appalachian mountain region. These typical 355 to 710 mm thick reserves are difficult or uneconomical to recover with present technology. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing technology that would allow nearly 100% recovery of thin seams in these mountaintop regions. This paper details the research that has been conducted on these new techniques and presents results of testing on a cross-ridge full-scale physical model.

This paper, one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining at various mica mines in the United States, describes the methods now in use in the principal mica mines of the Southern Appalachian States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

INTRODUCTION In October 2014, on behalf of the French government, Ifremer, along with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), signed a contract to start a detailed exploration program for seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in the work plan located on the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR). The contract has a fifteen-year lifetime and the related exploration program must include the outline of SMS deposits and a resource assessment, as well as detailed environmental base line studies in the contract area. The exploration for SMS deposits generally includes detection of hydrothermal plume anomalies, acquisition of surface and near-bottom geophysical data, sampling operations from the research vessel (e.g. dredges, cores), and dive operations. The environmental studies include, among others, short and long-term oceanographic measurements, water column studies, biodiversity evaluation close and far from SMS deposits, characterization of natural hydrothermal plumes and related sedimentation. The HERMINE research cruise held from March 13th to April 28th 2018 (R/V Pourquoi Pas?) was the first cruise dedicated to exploration of active and inactive SMS and to the quantification of natural chemical input to the water column. The HERMINE cruise strategy was built up around three main objectives: (i) regional exploration including the detection of plume anomalies and the research of SMS deposits, (ii) local exploration of a SMS district and (iii) integrated study of a natural hydrothermal plume. This 3-in-1 cruise required us to optimize the switch between dives and surface operations. Day-time was devoted to dive operations whereas night-time was mostly dedicated to CTD/Rosette operations. The Nautile HOV (Human Occupied Vehicle) was well suited to the working time schedule of the cruise because it was time efficient in shorter (i.e. < 10h) dives due to fast descent and ascent speed, fast submerged forward speed, high maneuverability and the ability to carry heavy science payload as well as large volume of samples. Regional Exploration The first seventeen days of the HERMINE cruise were devoted to regional exploration, i.e. the detection of new plume anomalies and the research of new sulfide mineralization in the French work plan (10 000 km2; 6 clusters).

The constitutional diagram has been determined in part for the sgstem Gd-Fe. Seven intermetallic compounds have been found at compositions corresponding to the following Gd-Fe ratios; 2:3, 1.2, 1:3, 2:7, 1:4, 1:5, and 2:17. The GdFe, com-pound has a congruent melting point above 18000C, whereas all of the remaining compounds melt incongruently, A eutectic exists at 13 wt pct Fe at a temperature of 860°C. ALTHOUGH an increasing amount of information is becoming available on the metallurgy of pure rare earth metals, relatively few studies have been made on alloy systems of the rare earths with the transition metals; iron, nickel, and cobalt. Even less data are extant on gadolinium alloys although it could be expected that such alloys might possess interesting structural and magnetic properties. In this paper, we report investigation of the gadolinium-iron alloy system. Studies on systems containing nickel and cobalt will be presented in subsequent papers. Previous data on gadolinium-iron compounds have been reported by Endter and Klemm1 and Jep-son and Duwez.2 Both reports agree on the existence of the GdFe2 phase, which crystallizes with the C-15type structure (face-centered cubic). This is in accord with results of the present work. EXPERIMENTAL The gadolinium metal used was prepared by met-allothermic reduction of high purity gadolinium fluoride. A typical analysis of the metal thus produced indicated the principal impurities to be oxygen, 0.24 pct, and tantalum, 0.2 pct. The iron metal used for alloying was a reagent grade material. Alloys were prepared by arc melting mixtures of the respective metals. Appropriate quantities of the two component metals were carefully weighed, blended and compacted. The compacts were then melted in an arc furnace consisting of a water-cooled copper hearth plate and a water-cooled tungsten-tipped counter electrode contained in a brass vacuum chamber. The furnace was evacuated to an absolute pressure of less than 1 with the leak rate established as being less than 20 per min. The furnace was then back-filled to a pressure of 25 mm of Hg, with a 75 pct He-25 pct Ar mixture. Arc melting at 25 v and 300 amp was maintained for about 30 to 60 sec until the entire visible area of the sample became molten, by which time surface tension had drawn the molten metal pool into a large bead. After allowing the furnace to cool, the alloy button was inverted and the melting process repeated. A series of melts was made covering entire composition ranges from 100 pct Gd to 100 pct Fe. All samples were examined metallographically in the as-melted condition. As the phase diagram became rationalized, and differential thermal analysis had given indications of temperature arrests, annealing was carried out in vacuo or in argon. Generally, compositions containing more than about 60 pct Gd were heat treated at 750°C and alloys containing less than this quantity of gadolinium were annealed at 1000°C. Prolonged annealing times were of the order of 100 to 200 hr. Metallographic examination was repeated on the annealed materials. Although little material loss was noted during alloy preparation, chemical analyses were made on all specimens prepared. The following standard, analytical techniques were used. Samples were dissolved in hydrochloric acid; insoluble material was filtered off, ignited and fused with potassium pyro-sulfate. The cold melt was leached with dilute acid and the solution thus obtained added to the main sample solution. Gadolinium was always determined gravimetri-callv as oxide from oxalate ignition. Iron was removed from an aliquot sample by electrolysis on a mercury cathode at approximately six volts. Gadolinium in the iron-free electrolyte was then precipitated as oxalate which was subsequently ignited to oxide. Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

"Mineral texture is a critical factor which controls ore variability and is an important attribute in geometallurgy. In relation to downstream processes, it affects the fracture pattern during breakage, where rock strength is inherently a function of mineral texture. Because of the subjective nature of mineral texture, it has not been easy to quantify, especially in the context of a measurement suitable for use in geometallurgical programmes. The aim of this paper is to present the first steps in developing a 3D mineral texture quantification method for drill core and to assess its sensitivity to differences in rock strength using a case study. The methodology includes classifying the textural information using the 3D grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) coupled method. Rock strength tests were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The case study investigates a heterogeneous polymetallic sulphide deposit and a homogeneous shale subdivided into three ’mineral textural types’. The variability is largely captured by the GLCM matrices, and preliminary trends can be observed where the shale is finer grained and has a higher yield strength in comparison with the coarser grained polymetallic sulphide ore. IntroductionModern mining requires the exploitation of lower grade and more complex, heterogeneous orebodies to address the growing industry demands. Historically, processing plants were designed and built based on average ore characteristics and therefore are relatively inflexible when facing the full spectrum of ore variability in heterogeneous orebodies (Lamberg, 2011; Lotter, 2011; Schouwstra et al., 2013). The practice of geometallurgy represents an opportunity to manage ore variability in the mining industry (Powell 2013; Baum, 2014; Yildirim et al., 2014; Nguyen, 2013). It focuses on quantifying the relationships between ore characteristics and their downstream mining and processing responses, often starting with small-scale laboratory testing. The purpose of geometallurgy is linked to maximizing the net present value (NPV) of an orebody by minimizing technical and operational risk – where ‘ore variability’ is considered one of the most significant technical risks."

This publication is a compilation of tested methods for the analyses of titanium tetrachloride, titanium sponge, and various intermediate materials and products. They are presented in concise form without the detail usually found in publication of new methods because many of them are modifications of well known procedures. The Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., has been developing titanium production methods since 1945. Most of this development was on a modified Kroll Process but also included work on sodium reduction and electrolytic methods. During these years a large variety of samples were analyzed. Most of the analytical problems were solved using published methods or modifications of the same. At the start, there were no published procedures for analyzing titanium sponge using spectrochemical methods. A great deal of study was given to testing several of the well known techniques, and some of them, such as direct sparking of the metal, proved to be completely unsatisfactory. Solution-spark techniques were finally tried, and satisfactory procedures were developed for some of the more common impurities. These spectrochemical methods were then put into routine use for several months before their publication.2/ Some new modifications have been made, and techniques have been developed to determine other impurities found in titanium sponge and tetrachloride. All spectrochemical methods used in 1954 are included in this publication.

It is a great pleasure to accept the invitation to open this Joint Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. It is the second invita- tion to participate in the Conference that I have accepted. When it was being planned, the President wrote to me to invite me to be one of the speakers in one of the technical sessions. I wrote accepting the invitation, and when my present appointment was announced, there was a nice question about the earlier commitment. The upshot of it all is revealed by the present arrange-., ment: you get me as opener and the more sub- k stantial speech is to be given by Professor Rupert Myers, my friend and former colleague who will not only be able to contribute from the standpoint of an experienced University admini- strator, but will also speak from a professional training and experience much more closely relat- ed to the concerns of this Conference than I possess. Though it is a joint meeting and the speakers will include distinguished figures from North America, I hope that since the venue is Australia, I may be permitted to speak with an Australian emphasis. I have recently had a brief glimpse of part of the Australian mining industry. In the course of a journey through the Northern Terri- tory we-my wife and I-visited Gove, Groote Eylandt, and Tennant Creek. At Gove we saw the remarkable Nabalco development in bauxite and alumina and the very impressive town plan- ning development at Nhulunby, the major man- ganese enterprise at Groote Eylandt, and the gold mining activity at Tennant Creek. For lay people like us, a gold pour was arranged at Tennant Creek and that was a spectacular sight. On earlier occasions, and before my present appoint- ment, I had visited Mount Isa and the Utah fields, and Queensland Alumina at Gladstone. I have not seen the cradle of the modern mining industry, using cradle perhaps loosely, at Broken Hill, nor have I seen the great Pilbara develop- ment, nor Weipa. This is not for want of generous invitations and it is my hope that within the not too far distant future this will be rectified. Then there is the Australian petroleum industry and the great industries which make their products from the minerals mined which I have yet to See.

"A detailed study of the compositional relationships of the Uand Th-bearing minerals in Elliot Lake uranium ores has been conducted, particularly with regard to uranothorite, which clearly plays a critical role in hydrometallurgical processing. Application of the rotating disc progressive-leaching technique to individual mineral grains and intergrowths of known compositions has defined for the first time the solubilization behaviour ofthe minerals in question.In descending order of leachability, regardless of leaching conditions, the phases are: uranothorite, uraninite, and monazite. Inclusions of secondary uranothorite enhance the dissolution kinetics of uraninite, which exhibits a complex dissolution mode. U-rich uranothorite dissolves more readily than Th-rich. Monazite is soluble in HJ)04 and HCI solutions only at temperatures exceeding 85°C. Consequently, it is deduced that the 15% to 20% of thorium not leached from the ore is lost both as monazite and as uranothorite inclusions locked in monazite which persists to the tailings. INTRODUCTIONThe importance of precise information on the mineralogy of ore and gangue constituents for the optimization of metal recovery in hydrometa Uurgical processing has been recognized for some years (e.g. Burkin, 1969), and numerous investigations integrating mineralogical studies and experimental leaching have been reported for ores of gold, nickel, copper and uranium (see summary by Henley, 1983). The complex mineralogy of uranium ores hosted by Precambrian pyritiferous, quartz-pebble, conglomerates has prompted particular attention in this regard (e.g. Liebenberg, 1956; Liebenberg and Taverner, 1958; Feather and Snegg, 1978). In the great majority of documented studies, however, petrographic examination has been followed by bulk leaching, an approach which, although providing valuable information, does not permit precise definition of the evolution of mineral dissolution processes. The authors contend that experimentation involving the step-by-step leaching and mineralogical study of ores is more likely to reveal the actual dissolution events which control the release of metals and, hence, may better define the optimal conditions for hydrometallurgical processing. Such studies (e.g. Hausen, 1983; Horlick et al., 1981) in addition lend themselves to the prediction of changes in the leaching behaviour of ores in which one or more mineralogical feature is subject to modification, a common characteristic of mineral deposits."
