The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate matrix. These wastes may contain up to one third of the phosphate originally present in untreated ore. Samples of wastes were air-dried and leached using 93 pct sulfuric acid in the presence of methanol. Evidence for the formation of a calcium sulfate hemihydrate coating that hinders complete dissolution of phosphate is presented. Solid-liquid separations were enhanced when flocculation was effected using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in conjunction with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC. A conceptual flowsheet for a proposed process using an acid-alcohol leaching technique is presented.

This bulletin presents the results of 36 tests made on a 468-horsepower Edge Moor boiler fired with pulverized coal at the Oneida Street Station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co., Milwaukee, Wis. The tests were made by the fuel section of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation. Illinois coal was used as fuel; the furnace, burners, and feeders were designed by the Locomotive Pulverized Fuel Co. The object of the tests was to determine what over-all boiler efficiency could he obtained with pulverized coal under various conditions of furnace operation and with coal of different fineness and moisture content. The investigation was thorough. The pulverized coal, as it was supplied to the furnace, was weighed in specially designed tanks placed on platform scales. Twenty-nine of the tests were of 24 hours duration, three of 16 to 18 hours, and four of 12 hours. All tests are reported excepting two-8 and 20-which had to be stopped abruptly, No.8 because a motor actuating the coal-feed screw burned out and No. 20 because of trouble with the feed pump. Tests 1 to 27, inclusive, were made with round burners and tests 28 to 3Rwith spreading burners. In the first nine tests a large excess of air was supplied in an effort to prevent the ash fusing at the bottom of the furnace. In tests 10 to 16 the supply of excess air was reduced in order to get a high efficiency, regardless of the slagging of ash at the furnace bottom. Tests 17 to 27 were made with a water screen about 10 inches above the bottom of the furnace, to make possible the burning of coal with a small supply of excess air without the ash fusing at the bottom of the furnace. Tests 28,29, and 30 were made without the water screen and with a small supply of excess air, and tests 31 to 38 with a water screen around the walls near the bottom of the furnace. Tests 32, 33, 34, and 35 were run with coarser coal than that used ordinarily at the plant. Tests 36,37, and 38 were made with undried coal.

O objetivo desta pesquisa é caracterizar matérias-primas, massas e produto final, de indústrias da cerâmica vermelha presentes na região do cariri – CE, e que ainda não tenha suporte técnico para melhorar seus produtos ou até adequá-los as Normas Técnicas vigentes. Inicialmente, foram utilizados quatro tipos de argilas provenientes da Indústria Cerâmica Pé Seco, localizada na cidade do Crato na Região do Cariri- Ceará. Estas argilas foram submetidas aos ensaios de plasticidade pelo Método Atterberg, em seguida foram queimadas em três temperaturas diferentes (700ºC, 850ºC e 1.050ºC) e avaliadas o comportamento de absorção de água, retração linear, perda ao fogo e a tensão de ruptura à flexão.Todas as amostras de argila obtiveram um aumento da perda ao fogo, tensão de ruptura e retração linear com o aumento da temperatura, entretanto houve redução da absorção de água. De acordo com o teste de plasticidade, apenas as amostras AV, AB1e BP apresentaram plasticidade dentro do recomendado.

J. Askill and T. S. Lundy (Oak Ridge National Laboratory)—Moore has proposed a simple correlation between the activation energy for solute diffusion in fee metals and the atomic volume of the diffusing species using both tracer and chemical-diffusion data. The first point we wish to make is that it is wrong to attempt such correlations without separating the two types of data. Activation energies obtained using tracer techniques cannot, in general, be directly compared with those obtained from chemical-diffusion experiments. A knowledge of the variations of chemical potentials with composition is necessary and chemical-diffusion data must be corrected for such variations, even for dilute alloys, before a comparison is possible. Secondly, for nickel, iron, aluminum, and lead, Moore neglected a number of recently published works, e.g., Al26 and Mn54 in aluminum,46 cr51 in nickel,47 and Fe55 in iron.48 These and others should have been used. If one considers only the tracer diffusion data, there is left no simple correlation of the type proposed by Moore. For example, in the case of solute diffusion in aluminum the only reliable tracer data listed by Moore are for zinc and aluminum. The nickel, cobalt, and iron data of Agarwala49 are representative of near-surface diffusion-not bulk diffusion. In conclusion we suggest that for tracer diffusion data in these fee metals there is no justification for proposing any simple correlation of activation energy with atomic volume using the limited data that are presently available. R. H. Moore (author's reply)—The writer has proposed a simple correlation which is useful in estimating the internal consistency of diffusion data. The accuracy of the correlation is, of course, a function of the number of data available. Lundy and Askill take issue with the writer's decision to include data for the systems: nickel, iron, aluminum, and lead, taking the view that the data are insufficient to establish the correlation. The writer agrees that the data are insufficient and has cau- tioned the reader that the correlation is tentative in these instances. Inclusion of these systems is justified by the interesting trends the correlation reveals. For example, the distinction between interstitial and substitutional diffusion may be clearly established, Figs. 4 and 6, and the behavior of transition elements and nontransition elements is indicated to parallel the behavior illustrated by the silver and copper systems. Lundy and Askill have singled out the aluminum system for special criticism. The writer chose to discuss the data for diffusion of iron, nickel, and cobalt in aluminum in the terms used by the original authors9 and has included the comments of Balluffi.l0 The writer did not intend the reader to conclude that data for these elements should correlate with data for the nontransition elements as Lundy and Askill have evidently assumed. Iron, nickel, and cobalt form intermetallic compounds with aluminum, so the activity coefficients of these elements may be expected to deviate markedly from unity. This may account for the low frequency factors observed by Hirano.9 The nontransition elements, on the other hand, yield relatively simple phase diagrams with no evidence for intermetallic compound formation as in the case of iron, nickel, and cobalt. In dilute solution, Henry's law should be closely obeyed, the activity coefficients should not deviate markedly from unity, and the effect on the activation energy should not be large. The accuracy of the correlation applied to these systems will improve as the data is extended. It does not seem unreasonable to conclude that its extension should be encouraged.

DR. G. W. RAMSEY (l): A study of our non-treatment silicosis autopsy material for the years 1940-43 inclusive, in addition to the common findings of fibrosis, nodules, and emphysema, shows marked thickening of the alveolar walls. This change is due to one or more of the following factors: congestion, edema, accumulation of both small and large monocuclear cells within the interstitial tissues and large monocuclear cells attached to the lining membrane of the alveolar sacs. This alteration in the alveolar walls, we believe, is one of the most important factors in producing impaired pulmonary function. Comparison of our first autopsy material of a case receiving twenty aluminium treatments beginning June, 1943, shows a striking change in the alveolar walls. In all areas free of silocotic nodules and fibrous tissue, the alveolar walls approach normal thickness and are free of cellular deposits. No change was noted in the old processes and none was expected. We believe that these changes in the alveolar walls were brought about by the aluminium therapy and that they constitute a major factor in the improved pulmonary ventilation noted in treatment cases.

Among the more important factors involved in the use of high explosives in blasting operations is the means employed to bring about the detonation of the charge. When flame is applied to high explosives many of them may burn if not confined; but all of them when burning under certain conditions of confinement may detonate. Detonation may also be effected by mechanical means, such as frictional impact caused by a blow or by rubbing between surfaces. By this means, however, the full effect of the explosive charge may not be developed, so that a partial detonation, often accompanied by the burning of the explosive, results. When nitroglycerin was first used it was fired by the application of flame, but considerable difficulty was experienced in exploding it with certainty and in obtaining uniform resl'llts. In 1864 Allred Noble, a Swedish engineer, discovered that nitroglycerin could be surely and completely detonated by exploding in contact with it a small quantity of an initiatory explosive. Mercury fulminate was the substance then found capable of producing the best results There are many other fulminates and other substances that will produce complete detonation of commercial" high" explosives, but detonators or electric detonators containing mercury fulminate as the characteristic ingredient are still almost exclusively used in this country. The term" detonator" is used in the publications of the Bureau of Mines to designate what the miner calls a "blasting cap "-a copper capsule containing a small quantity of some detonating compound that is ignited by a fuse. The term" electric detonator" is applied to a blasting cap that is similar except for being ignited by means of a small wire which is heated to incandescence or fused by the passage of an electric current. One of the conditions prescribed by the Bureau of Mines for a permissible explosive a is that it shall be :fired by a detonator, or preferably an electric detonator, having a charge equivalent to that of the standard detonator used at the Pittsburgh testing station. A further requirement is that this charge shall consist by weight of 90 parts of mercury fulminate and 10 parts of potassium chlorate (or their equivalents). At the request of a manufacturer of permissible explosives, an investigation was undertaken by the bureau to determine the relative strength of detonators and electric detonators having different compositions. The tests of electric detonators herein reported were conducted by H. F. Braddock, junior chemist; J. W. Koster, J. E. Tiffany, junior mining engineers; and A. S. Crossfield, junior explosives chemist, at the Pittsburgh testing station of the bureau. Similar tests of detonators were not conducted because it was believed that the results would not show sufficient variation to warrant such tests. It is hoped that the conclusions drawn from the tests made will be of service to those using explosives by enabling them to select the grade of detonator or electric detonator that will insure the most effective results. The conclusions are given in this bulletin, which is published by the Bureau of Mines as one of a series of publications dealing with the testing of explosives and the precautions that should be taken to increase safety and efficiency in the use of explosives in mining operations. The results of tho experiments described in this bulletin show that the average percentage of failures of explosives to detonate was increased more than 20 per cent when the lower grades of electric detonators were used instead of No. 6 electric detonators, and was increased more than 50 per cent when these lower grades were used instead of No. 8 electric detonators. It is noteworthy, however, that when sensitive explosives, such as 40 per cent strength ammonia dynamite (p. 33), were tested under conditions ideal for detonation, the same energy was developed irrespective of the electric detonator used. When tests were made with a less sensitive explosive, such as a 40 per cent strength ammonia dynamite containing nitrosubstitution compounds (p. 32), the energy developed increased with the grade of the electric detonator used. For example, the average efficiency of four different explosives was increased 10.4 per cent when a No.6 electric detonator was used instead of a No.4 electric detonator, and 14.9 per cent when aN 0.8 electric detonator was used (see tabulation onp.45). The results of the tests emphasize the importance of using explosives in a fresh condition, but as fresh explosives can not always be had in mining work, strong detonators should be used in order to offset any deterioration of explosives from age.

Este trabalho trata justamente deste tópico e busca substituir a fluorita por outra fonte de fluxante, neste caso, o óxido de boro. Neste trabalho o óxido de boro foi adicionado a escórias sintéticas num banho de aço à 1600°C. Foram realizados testes com proporções de 3%, 5% e 7% de óxido de boro na composição das escórias. A fusão foi realizada em atmosfera inerte de argônio em um forno de resistência de dissiliceto de molibdênio. Amostras de aço foram removidas periodicamente a cada 5 minutos até os 25 minutos de experimento. Estas amostras foram analisadas em um espectrômetro de infravermelho. Os resultados indicam a viabilidade técnica para a aplicação do óxido de boro como substituinte da fluorita.

Surface treatments like laser shock peening (LSP) induce residual stresses penetrating up to 1 mm deep, surpassing traditional methods, thus significantly increasing the potential impact on materials prevalent in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Through extensive fatigue testing and fractography investigations, it was determined that LSP resulted in a fatigue life increase of over five times for aluminium alloy AA7075-T6 and titanium Ti-6Al-4V. Increased fatigue life was also noted in AISI316 stainless steel, which showed increases in fatigue life of 1.7x. While fatigue life in all cases improved, the efficacy of LSP was shown to be material dependent.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to provide technical information needed to devise waste management plans for the processing of manganese nodules. Studies included summary descriptions of Pacific manganese nodules, process options and flowsheets, methods for characterizing nodules and their tailings, and results of analyses of laboratory and pilot-plant generated tailings. This information is the result of a cooperative research effort of the Bureau of Mines and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with NOAA providing funding and the Bureau conducting the research. A summary of the extensive literature review is provided for manganese nodule mineralogy, chemistry, processing techniques, and methods of analyses. Characterizations and analyses of laboratory-generated tailings and slags are given, as well as the results of the leaching studies on these waste materials. Leachability was determined by three standard leachate tests- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-EPA seawater elutriant test. While the wastes generated in the laboratory may not be entirely representative of those to be generated in full-scale plants, results of these studies provide a positive indication that commercial recovery of cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel from manganese nodules would be environmentally acceptable.

Rolling temperatures and cross rolling ratios were varied to investigate the effect of crystallographic texture of alpha-phase on the anisotropy of mechanical properties in modified Ti-6A1-4V alloy. Hot rolling method was unidirectional and cross rolling, during which the rolling temperature was in the range of 830°C and 920°C. Cross rolling ratios were varied from 0.3 to 1.0 at 875°C. For unidirectional rolling, as the rolling temperature increased texture changed from the mixed basal and transverse texture to the simple transverse texture. Contrary to other work, it was observed that the maximum intensity of transverse components increased with the increase in rolling temperature. For cross rolling, on the other hand, the transverse texture component was almost suppressed at 830°C, giving rise to a symmetrical basal texture. With increasing cross rolling temperature, the transverse texture components developed again. A simple transverse texture, which showed two maxima appearing circularly 90° apart, was observed at 920°C. It was found that unidirectional rolling could not eliminate the transverse texture, which resulted in the anisotropy of mechanical properties. The anisotropy of mechanical properties obtained from tensile and V-notch Charpy test was closely related to the crystallographic texture and its intensity at each rolling condition. To obtain the isotropy of mechanical properties by cross rolling, it is suggested that cross-rolling ratios should be controlled above 0.5. The variation of rolling temperatures and directions has great influence on the anisotropy of impact value rather than tensile strength.

The range of composition of gases synthesized from solid fuels which are exchangeable with natural gas on current gas appliances was evaluated by theoretical principles. These principles consider primarily the flashback, blowoff, and yellow-tipping characteristics of air-entraining burner flames. It was found that complete identity between the synthetic and natural product is not necessary. Gases such as may be obtained by hydrogasification of coal and other solid fuels without the removal of unreacted hydrogen offer advantages in flame characteristics. Between 25 to 37 percent hydrogen can be tolerated in the sendout gas.

TD-Nickel has been broken in tension and in fatigue at voom temperature. Rod specimens failed in tension by necking, with axial cracks attributed to voids elongated in the extrusion direction. Fatigue specimens failed in shear. Thin-film electron microscopy showed that the subgrain structure of TD-Nickel was very stable, and that particle-matrix detachment was very difficult, in tension and fatigue. TD-Nickel softened slightly during fatigue but had a high fatigue ratio (0.5at 10' cycles). Fractography suggested that Stage I fatigue crack propagation is greatly extended in TD-Nickel. Td-NICKEL* is a dispersion of 2 pct by volume of thoria (ThO2) in nickel, produced by powder-metallurgical methods including compaction, sintering, and extrusion. The spherical thoria particles, which may have a mean diameter of a few hundred angstroms, are dispersed with a mean planar spacing of a few thousand angstroms. By a combination of cold working and annealing, a subgrain or cell structure of dislocations intimately associated with the dispersion can be produced.' This gives the material useful tensile properties which are extremely resistant to exposure to high temperatures.'-= At the same time, the material shows considerable ductility.3'4 At the beginning of the present work, it was considered of great interest to investigate the mechanical stability of TD-Nickel under conditions of fatigue. On the one hand, materials which derive strength from a cold-worked structure are unstable in that they are susceptible to fatigue softening: in addition, the presence of discontinuities such as the particle-matrix interfaces might be expected to assist in the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, in that they may provide local concentrations of internal stress and sites for the initiation of voids." On the other hand, the substantial ductility of TD-Nickel suggests that if it obeys Coffin's relation8 (or the more refined form proposed by Manson9) it should have good fatigue resistance. The initial purpose of this investigation was to assess the importance of these factors. Also, relatively little fundamental work has been done on the mechanism of fatigue in dispersion-strengthened materials. Work on overaged A1-4 pct CU10-12 revealed a very large Bauschinger effect indicative of internal stresses at the particles, and very great fatigue hardening1' presumably due to the multiple slip stimulated by these internal stresses, followed by softening which was initially due to softening in the matrix, but later might have arisen from cracking at the particle-matrix interfaces. The study of overaged Al-4 pct Cu could not settle this latter point by the electron microscopy of thin films, since the dispersion is too coarse. A previous study of the fatigue of internally oxidized copper13 was complicated by inter granular failure, attributed to oxide particles at grain bouhdaries; internal oxidation of single crystals, however, improved their fatigue properties.'3 Investigations of SAP (sintered aluminum powder) are complicated by the complex particle shapes, and the possibility of continuous internal oxide films.14 It was hoped to avoid these difficulties with TD-Nickel, which had the further advantages that it was commercially available and suitable for study by the thin-film technique. 1) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE TD-Nickel was purchased from the Driver-Harris Co. as 3/9-in.-diam rod which had been extruded, swaged, and "stress-relieved" (normally at 1010°C for 1 hr). Continuous-radius fatigue specimens with a minimum diameter of -0.1 in. were ground to shape and electropolished in 40 pct phosphoric, 35 pct sul-furic, 25 pct water at 25oC, with a stainless-steel cathode, at -6 v. Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature with a Sonntag SF-1-U machine operating in push-pull at 1800 cycles per min, and in an Instron TT-C-L modified for reversed stressing at 26 cycles per min as described elsewhere.10 Round tensile specimens were ground with 0.85-in. gage lengths of 0.135 in, diam, electropolished, and tested in a Tinius Olsen hydraulic machine. The surfaces of fatigue specimens were examined with a Reichert metallograph. Discs for electron microscopy with a Siemens Elmiskop I were spark-cut 0.01 in. thick with a modified Servomet 11 employing a tool of moving molybdenum wire, cleaned in 50 pct acetic, 30 pct nitric, 10 pct phosphoric, and 10pctsul-furic at 85oC, and thinned by the window method in the electropolishing solution at -20°C and -6 v. Two-stage replicas (parlodion, then Pt-50 pct C self-shadowed at 40 deg) were taken from fatigue fracture surfaces for electron microscopy. Plane sections parallel to the specimen axis and containing the direction of fatigue crack propagation were polished, etched with Carapella's reagent, and examined optically. Transmission Laue X-ray photographs of as-received material electropolished to a point were used to determine preferred orientation. 2) RESULTS 2.1) The Structure of As-Received Material. This paper describes the results of a laboratory investigation conducted to obtain data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. Air and fuel requirements, rates of advance, com-bustion temperatures, and coke and fluid distributions are presented. The mechanism of oil recovery by in stiu combustion is discussed. Five crude oils ranging in gravity from 10.9 to 34.2"' API were prodrrced from a semiadiabatic, uncon-.solidnted sand pack by in situ combustion. Experimental conditions were varied over a wide range in order to determine the inter-relation-.ships of process variables. The mini-mum air flux requirement for self-sustained combustion was found to he less than 10 scf/hr-ft'l. The rate of advance of a self-sustained combustion zone was found to be nearly proportional to the air flux at the combustion front. The effects of presrure and injected air flux were studied in a series of experiments using a 21.2" API crude. A minimum air require-ment was observed at an air .flux of 20 scf/hr-ft'. The oil saturation con-sumed as fuel averaged 5.5 per cent of pore volume. The effect of air pressure was, found to be .small for experiments having high combustion eficiencies. This study should promote a better understanding of the problems and mechanisms involved in labora-tory investigations and field applications of the in situ combustion pro-cess. The data presented will be use- ful in the interpretation of results of field tests. When tempered with volu-metric sweep efficiencies, the data can be used in making preliminary economic appraisals of the process as applied to reservoirs containing high porosity unconsolidated media. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this work was to obtain laboratory data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. In situ combustion basically consists of (1) injecting air into a reservoir through selected input wells to create an air sweep through the reservoir, (2) igniting the crude at the injection well, and (3) propagating the combustion front through the reservoir by continued air injection. By this means, oil is swept toward producing wells in the area. The fuel for combustion is supplied by heavy residual material (coke) which has been deposited on the sand grains during distillation and cracking of the crude oil ahead of the combustion front. Recovery of petroleum by a combustion or heat wave process is not a new idea. F. A. Howard was granted a patent in 1923 on a process in which air and a combustible gas were pumped into an injection well and ignited.' Russian engineers reported on field experiments with a crude oil gasification process in 1935'. Other known early field tests include those conducted near Bar-tlesville and Ardmore, Okla., in 1942." More recently completed field tests include an inverted seven-spot by Sinclair Oil Co. in the Delaware-Childers field, Nowata County, Okla.'; a three-well and an inverted five-spot test by Magnolia Petroleum Co. in Jefferson County, Okla."."; and a test by California Research Corp. in the Irvine-Furnace field in Kentucky. The Worthington Corp. has completed a test in cooperation with the Forest Oil Corp. in Clark County, 111.l Several field tests are now in progress. Sinclair has acquired a 600-acre lease in the Humboldt-Chanute field, Allen County, Kans., and is under way with a large-scale operation. Three field tests are under way in California. The General Petroleum Corp. is conducting an inverted five-spot pattern test in the South Bel-ridge field in Kern County under a cooperative agreement with 11 other companies, including Continental Oil Co. California Research Corp. is conducting a four-well pattern test in Midway-Sunset field near Maricopa, and Richfield Oil Corp. is under way with a test in the Ojai field in Ventura County. Although the published information is valuable concerning results of field tests, little laboratory data other than that reported by Kuhn and Koch5 are available to aid in appraising the tests from a technical or economic standpoint. Engineering data needed to evaluate the process include the amount of air required per barrel of oil recovered, minimum injection rates which will support combustion, rates of advance, air required per unit volume of reservoir cleaned, amount of oil recovered, and amount of oil consumed as fuel. The present laboratory investigation was undertaken to provide these data for that portion of the reservoir swept by the combustion zone. ONE of the interesting features connected with the great continental uplift, which formed the table land of Mexico, is the great depth to which oxidation and secondary enrichment of orebOdies occurred. This table land lies at altitudes ranging from 4000 to. 7000 ft. (1219 to 2133 m.) above sea level. Several cases could be cited of oxidized zones in copper and lead mines which reached depths of upward of 1500 ft. (457 m.) below the surface, and it is universally admitted that the oxidized zone in a mine is limited by the permanent water level. FIG. 1. Mexico, however, like many other countries in which deserts occur, is visited at rare intervals by tremendous floods, which sometimes cause variable water levels over long periods. The following cases bear out the idea, and lead to interesting conclusions of commercial value. My paper demonstrates that carbonates of ores may occur below water level and sulphides above, and I will endeavor to explain the causes of the phenomena in certain specific instances.

This report summarizes the Bureau of Mines noise-control research program from 1972 to 1982. Each segment of the mining industry--under- ground coal, underground hardrock, surface mining, and processing plants--has different noise-control problems because of vast differences in working procedures, equipment, and workplace design. The Bureau has identified the most serious noise problems in each segment and has developed strategies for attacking these problems. This publication points out the need for noise control in the mining industry, discusses Federal regulations governing worker exposure to noise, and describes the Bureau's overall approach to mining noise- control research. It traces the history of noise overexposure in each segment of the mining industry and discusses the major noise sources. It provides detailed information on noise-control research efforts in the Bureau's major areas of emphasis, including the results of these efforts. Finally, the report discusses the Bureau's future role in research on mining noise control, emphasizing the need to expend more effort on long term in-house investigations into the noise problems that have been identified in past programs as the most serious ones.

Anticipating the need for convenient, economical, and safe means for disposing of combustible wastes contaminated with low-level activity, in connection with private and institutional uses of radioisotopes, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) has provided the Bureau of Mines with funds to develop an incinerator for this purpose. A prototype incinerator, designated hereafter as BOMAEC-30, was designed, constructed, and tested, based on fundamental and applied research investigations of the combustion characteristics of rubbish and sawdust, which will comprise the bulk of contaminated wastes. No radioisotopes were used in the tests; the objective was to remove as much particulate matter from the products of combustion as possible. The prototype unit was designed to burn 30 pounds per hour, using 100 percent over fire air admitted tangentially in an all-metal, cylindrical combustion chamber. The gas-cleaning system consisted of special fabric bags and absolute filters.

Surfaces forces have been measured between gold sphere and gold-coated glass plate in xanthate solutions using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The measurements conducted in potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions showed long-range hydrophobic forces, with the force curves showing no evidence for nanonubbles on the surface. The strongest hydrophobic force was measured at contact angle of 94° with a decay length of 23 nm. The hydrophobic force became weaker at higher concentrations and after a long immersion time, which may be attributed to the xanthate species adsorbed on top of the first mono layer. The hydrophobic force became stronger when the residual xanthate solution is displaced by pure water, indicating that hydrophobic force becomes the strongest in pure water.

Introduction Since the discovery of a major oil pool at Leduc, Alberta, on February 13th, 1947, the long spell of 'oil drought' in Western Canada is now being turned into an oil and gas flood which requires immediate action to obtain the optimum economic benefits. The Woodbend, Section 9, and Okalta extensions of the Leduc field itself have been established; the Redwater pool, lying thirty-seven miles northeast of Edmonton, has been discovered and is being drilled up, and the Imperial Schoepp No. 1 or Golden Spike discovery holds promise of something phenomenal in view of the 500 feet of oil-saturated coral-reef porosity whose areal extent is not known. Imperial Stanolind Barrhead No. 1, northwest of Edmonton, revealed the presence of oil in the Madison, and just recently Gulf N.J. Ellis No. 1, some sixty miles southeast of Leduc, found commercial production in the Leduc D-2 discovery zone. In addition to these Paloeozoic discoveries, gas and oil reserves have also been established in the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, which must be penetrated by all tests on the way through the geological column to the Devonian. If ever there appeared to be an index of 'things to come' in the oil industry, this is it. However, without these recent discoveries the picture in Western Canada does and always did, look very promising indeed. A brief survey of the geological setting in Western Canada is the object of this contribution.

Deregulation, as authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (PL102-486) allows free-market competition in the electric-utility industry. As the act unfolds, though, uncertainties abound about the type, degree and direction of impacts throughout the affected economy — from fuel suppliers to electricity generators and from power distributors to energy consumers. Instead of having a familiar base of captive customers and electricity prices fixed by negotiation with state public utility commissions, utility companies are preparing for open, free-market competition. They are looking at all areas, including fuel supply, to cut costs to remain competitive. Humorous anecdotes are told about utility companies shunning insiders for senior executive positions. Instead, they are opting for people from the telephone or other industries with deregulation experience. And there are light-hearted stories about a trend away from traditional electric-company names, such as the name of a city or state followed by Edison or Power and Light, to space-age names, such as Ameren, Entergy, Illinova or Unicom. No one wants to be left behind or be perceived to be left behind.
