Digital transformation (DT) is the process by which entities adapt themselves to modern technology. As digital technology becomes more prevalent (automation, cameras, sensors, touchscreens, artificial intelligence, etc.), there will be increased pressure on companies to leverage it for additional gains. For many companies in the mining industry, this will involve overcoming a steep learning curve. Furthermore, as the long-term success of the mining industry is dependent on a labor force with new skills (data management, analytics, digital literacy, etc.), new curriculum will need to be appended to the mining engineering discipline. This paper considers the mining industry’s need for DT. Then, it presents a three-part review of the foundational components of the DT process–ubiquitous data, connectivity, and decision making. Finally, it provides a discussion on the future of DT in mining as well as a research direction, which identifies the need of academia to provide support for mining companies in the form of both research and the education of digitally literate, dynamically capable mining engineers into the coming decades.

Petrographic methods of examination were used by the Bureau of Mines on a suite of samples of ultramafic rock from Soapstone Ridge, Ga., located about 8 miles south-southeast of Atlanta. The samples were analyzed to determine (1) their potential for releasing regulatory particles upon crushing and grinding and (2) their concentration of fibrous particles that approach the dimensions of amphibole and serpentine asbestos minerals. Such particles might be generated during grading and excavation for housing and industrial development and could become a health concern. Light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were the techniques used to examine the samples. Six of the twelve samples contained amphibole as a major mineral; in five, it was a moderate to minor mineral. One sample contained no amphiboles, and serpentine was not observed or identified by X-ray diffraction in any of the samples. In nine of the samples, the amphiboles exhibited a habit that was either prismatic or acicular, but not asbestiform. Two of the samples did contain asbestos, occurring as small veins or fracture fillings, which represented only a minor percentage of the total sample. Similar petrographic screening is recommended for examining any rock deposit or mine location to delineate hazardous and nonhazardous mineral areas.

The wearing of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, although relatively safe if proper precautions are taken, is dangerous if defective apparatus -is worn, if men with inadequate training, experience, and physical requirements are used, or if improper procedure is followed. This is proved by the fact that at least 26 men are known to have lost their lives while wearing-oxygen breathing apparatus since its introduction in this country about 35 years ago. Self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, commonly called "mine rescue apparatus" and sometimes improperly referred to as "oxygen helmets," is the only equipment that can be used for respiratory protection against poisonous mine gases, regardless of concentration or against an atmosphere containing little or no oxygen.3/ Apparatus of this type was introduced in this country in 1907, and since that time it has been widely used in conducting rescue and recovery work after mine fires and explosions and in some other work. All oxygen breathing apparatus used in this country before 1918 was imported from Europe, and although this equipment provided safer, more rapid means of conducting recovery work after mine disasters, there were many mechanical deficiencies in the apparatus which resulted in the death of some of the wearers. This led to the research and experimental work by the Bureau of Mines that resulted in the development and manufacture of more reliable and efficient types of apparatus in this country.

An investigation of hazardous surface openings of abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills area of South Dakota has revealed: (1) tracing legal ownership of mineral claims via county courthouses is confusing, complex, and oftentimes misleading, (2) in general, the selected mine openings in this investigation are to be considered relatively high in risks and hazard potential which poses a threat to the general public, (3) mine closure procedures and designs can generally be categorically implemented depending on the overall situation of the particular mine opening with subsequent unit costs estimates, (4) few preventive state or federal legal measures exist to date concerning mine closures, and (5) liability damages relating to mine opening accidents usually involve expensive and complex common law cases.

Comminution is an integral part of the mineral extraction process. However, the influence of the comminution method (ball and rod mills) on silica and magnetite particle shapes has not been substantially investigated. Shape parameters for fractions of -250+212, -150+125, and -106+75 μm sizes were examined utilizing a scanning electron microscope and a Clemex vision PE image analysis system. The silica particles displayed higher elongation and flatness parameter values for rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of rod mill products are less than that of the ball mill products. Magnetite particle elongation and flatness parameter values of ball mill products in fraction sizes of -250+212 and -106+75 μm are larger than rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of ball mill products are smaller than rod-mill products, but for the -150+125 μm size range the result is converse. Furthermore, particle elongation and flatness increased with decreasing particle sizes of silica, whereas, roundness and relative width decreased for both Ball and Rod Mills. In case of magnetite, ball mill products displayed an increase of flatness and particle elongations with decreasing particle sizes but flatness increased and roundness and relative width decreased. Similarly for rod mills, magnetite fractions of -150+125 μm were found to have the largest values of elongation and flatness. INTRODUCTION Comminution alters the size and shape, causes lattice distortion, changes chemical composition, surface area, surface-free energy, and polymorphic transformation of all materials. The quantity and quality of such changes depend on specifications of the material feedstock, the type of mill being utilized, the specific energy input, ambient temperature, and environmental pressure [1]. The shape difference between the milled products depends on different grinding mechanisms and the respective breakage principles that these mechanisms depend on [2, 3]. With decreasing particle sizes, the nature of the particle surface become crucial [1]. The influence of the breakage technique has been found to be non-trivial and heavily dependent on the type of grinding mill used for particle size reduction [4]. Shape is an important industrial parameter for predicting particle behavior in downstream processes. The shape parameter affects the way particles burn, compact, are recovered, flow in fluids, sinter, float, agglomerate, fluidize, interact with pulmonary tissue, cut, abrade, react with chemicals, form structural materials, and retain and permit fluids to flow [5, 6]. The distribution of particle sizes and shapes are important for mining, civil and chemical, pharmaceutical, and various other industries with interest in the population modeling of atmospheric dusts, smoke, and grit [1, 3, 6]. The shape parameter not only affects the chemical, physical, surface properties of particles but is also important for downstream processes [5, 6]. Image analysis has been found to provide detailed information about size and shape of the particles and can be used for the control of product quality [4].

Those involved in the mining and minerals industry really are an optimistic bunch. Faced with an economic downturn that has spread across the globe ? one, some say, that crept up on everyone ? mining professionals remain hopeful that the industry will return. An example of that optimism is the attendance at two of the industry?s key conferences and exhibitions. In February, more than 4,200 people attended the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Denver, CO. And a week later, in Toronto, Ontario, more than 18,000 were on hand for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada?s (PDAC) meeting. Both are respectable numbers and run contrary to meeting attendance figures during previous downturns when attendance and the numbers of exhibitors fell off significantly. Like other downturns, this most recent one has resulted in massive layoffs, curtailments of production and outright closures. Exploration has been hard hit and many junior mining and exploration companies will either disappear or be swallowed up by others. Gold is its usual self The PDAC generally attracts the gold mining and exploration sectors. So that might explain some of the optimism at the meeting. Unlike base metals and construction materials, gold, not surprisingly, is doing well. And most of the companies in the Investors Exchange at PDAC were involved with gold. While the balance sheets for most base metals companies look bad, gold companies appear to be not as hard hit. Gold is doing what it usually does during a downturn ? act as a safe haven while the value of other assets collapse worldwide. Governments around the world are preparing to pour trillions of dollars in an attempt to resuscitate their economies. This will likely lead to inflation, some experts at the PDAC convention said, which will be good for gold. And gold mining companies are also benefiting from lower production costs. The result is that some gold watchers believe gold could reach $64/g ($2,000/oz) at some point.

Several experiments were carried out to simulate the bath smelting reactions where iron oxide particles were dropped on to an iron-carbon bath containing molten CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slag layer on its surface. The composition of the slags used in the experiments was %CaO:46.1; %SiO2:41.7; and %A1203:12.2. Experiments were con¬ducted with carbon saturated iron melts contained in either a pure graphite crucible whose walls were covered with a pure alumina tube, or a pure flat bottom alumina crucible, at 1723-1823 K. Degree of reduction of a pure iron oxide particle was linear with time in the initial stages (up to about 20% oxygen of the original pellet was reduced). The rate of reduction of smaller oxide pellets was smaller than that of a bigger pellet - the time for complete reduction of a 5.6 g wustite pellet was smaller than that for a 1.2 g wustite pellet. It was also established that the interaction rates obtained by adding a molten pure oxide particle of given weight to the system were lower than that determined by using a solid oxide particle of same weight. The overall rates of reduction decreased with decreasing the bath temperature. The experimentally determined rates of reduction based on the time for 70% reduction were influenced substantially by addition of slag up to about 50 g on to a bath of 78.8 mm in diameter, and remained constant when slag present on the bath surface was between 50 g and 200 g.

THE QUARTETTE Mine near Searchlight, NV, a mine that first operated in the 1890s, could begin processing ore again by September. Jetco Enterprises Inc. plans to work through the tailings and ore close to the surface followed by plans for an openpit mine. It is one of at least three new mining efforts in the region, the Associated Press reported. Another is north of Searchlight, with yet another across the Colorado River in Arizona, east of Bullhead City. Gold mining is rare in southern Nevada. The area generally lacks the rock type that contains gold deposits. Restrictions on federal wilderness areas and protections for the desert tortoise also play a role. Gold veins in the region are generally small and erratic in length and height, Bill Durbin, a geologist and chief of southern Nevada operations for the Nevada Division of Minerals told the Associated Press. L.R. Tad Tinnell, president of Jetco Enterprises, has long eyed the mine. From 1993 to 1995, he explored and drilled on the property, which was still owned by Searchlight Mercantile.

WE can, I think, rightfully claim, irrespective of our faults, that engineers must, in order to last as engineers, possess the qualifications of integrity, stead- fastness of purpose, ability to think straight, and to apply these qualities consistently and continually in their everyday work. All engineers know this, most of them conform, and in order to drive it home I might, if 'clothed with proper authority, preach to you at length, but I shall not take the chance. So I only want to make a suggestion or two to the young engineers. Have an ideal and work toward it. You will have your disappointments and your temptations but keep your record clean, and if anyone says you are foolish or ugly, or homely, or that you need a guardian, take the criticism with a smile, for he may be able to prove his contention; but if he attacks your integrity, strike at once and fight hard, for he has assailed not only your character but your principal asset as an engineer.

Froth flotation processes are carried out in flotation cells that are grouped into banks, and these banks are interconnected, forming a flotation circuit. A literature review shows the existence of papers related to flotation circuit design based on mathematical programming. However, due to the complexity of solving the mathematical model in most of the work, it is considered that a small number of species is present in the feed to the circuit, which differs from practice. In addition, simple bank models are generally used. This paper presents a methodology for designing mineral concentration circuits that overcomes the problems mentioned. It allows the use of more suitable cell or bank models and the inclusion of several species. The methodology is based on two phases. The first phase identifies the set of optimal structures using discrete values of stage recoveries, solving several mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems. In the second phase, the optimal design for each of the structures obtained in the previous phase is determined using a suitable model for the recovery at each cell or bank, which results in a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The design of a copper concentration plant with eight species and the design of a zinc concentration plant with three species and five size fractions by species are used to validate the proposed methodology. The structure of the cells in the rougher and cleaner banks deliver structures that are novel.

Highwall scaling, bolting and technical blasting are important aspects in the remediation of existing highwall exposures. Proper planning, design and research are important first steps in the development of long term stability. Research into old workings and their influence on highwall stability control the planning and design. These steps are followed by improvements in blasting techniques, highwall monitoring programs and constant evaluation of the results. Recently, due to a number of factors, the highwalls of the Open Cut Mine have started to deteriorate, creating both operational and potential safety problems. Geologic setting, highwall design, mining operations, old workings and weather have combined to create adverse conditions that have allowed sections of the highwalls to become unstable. Homestake Mining Company has developed a program to alleviate the existing ground control problems and to decrease the effect operations has on future highwall stability.

The ternary system Zr-Cr-0 was investigated at 1200°, 1500°, and 1700°C. The isotherms at these temperatures were determined by metallographic and X-ray diffraction analysis of carefully selected alloys. AS a part of a series of investigations1-4 of the ternary and quaternary phase diagrams on refractory metals and their compounds, the ternary system Zr-Cr-O was investigated at 1200°, 1500°, and 1'700°C. The binary diagrams Zr-Cr, Zr-O, and Cr-0 as reported by Hansen5 and Levin et a1.' and the existence of a ternary coompound ZrsCrsO (q-carbide structure a. = 11.96A) provided a good base for this investigation of the Zr-Cr-O phase diagram. MATERIALS The materials used and their suppliers were: Zirconium powder, 99.4 pct pure, Charles Hardy, New York; Zirconium dioxide, Fairmount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J.; Chromium powder, 99.85 pct pure, Fairmount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J.; Chromium sesquioxide, 99.86 pct pure, J. T. Baker Chemical Co., Pillipsburg, N.J. Though the materials used were not "hyperpure", the impurities present do not affect the results (lattice parameters, phase boundaries) within the experimental accuracy. EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE The detailed procedures and equipment used for this investigation were similar to those described elsewherel' "ith the exception that in this study an induction-heated argon-atmosphere furnace was used. The latter furnace was used to prevent the vaporization of chromium metal in samples in the higher temperature range (above 1200°C). The tungsten crucible was induct ion-heated in a vertical quartz tube filled with argon gas. The quartz tube was 1-1/2 in. in diameter and 10 in. long; it was connected at the top and bottom to water-cooled copper plates. The argon gas of a purity 99.995 pct was further purified by being passed through zirconium metal chips which were maintained at 800°C in a silica tube 1 in. in diameter and 30 in. in length. The furnace was flushed with argon gas for an hour before starting heating; during heating, a slight (3 cm oil) overpressure of argon was maintained in the system. Power was supplied by a 20-kw Ther-Monic Induction Generator. The samples rested on a tungsten-wire basket; the wire basket was connected to a tungsten wire which passed through the tungsten crucible lid, and entered the system on top through a Wilson-type seal. By pulling on the wire, the sample was removed from the crucible and dropped to the water-cooled copper base of the furnace. Because of the presence of argon gas, the cooling of the sample was even more rapid than in the vacuum furnace.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Isothermal Section at 1200°C. The compositions investigated have been numbered within the phase diagram, Fig. 1, and all the pertinent information about the samples can be found in Table I. This table lists the composition of the samples, the phases present in the room-temperature diffraction patterns, the phases detectable in the microstruc-ture, and calculated lattice parameters of the a-zirconium phase. This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a study and statistical analysis of part of the initial exploration churn-drill sampling and some of the subsequent underground diamond-drill-core sampling in the North are body at the San Manuel copper mine, Arizona. These data were derived from regular exploration and mine sampling, not from special samples obtained solely for statistical analysis. The study was conducted as part of the Bureau's continuing program on sampling-methods research. The major objective of the study was to investigate the feasibility of using the techniques of statistical analysis in evaluating sample and assay data and computing grade and tonnage of Ore from porphyry-type copper deposits. It was recognized that using existing data acquired over a period of several years by different methods would introduce problems and limitations for precise comparisons. However, it was expected that the study would provide some general conclusions and certainly a number of preliminary conclusions on the nature of the mineral characteristics and their effect on sampling procedures, the requirements for sampling deposits of this type, and the comparative results of churn-and diamond-drill sampling in the same area of the deposit. All of this information would be essential for future sampling-methods research for computing grade and tonnage of ore.
