O sistema MgO-NiO é um dos importantes sistemas para o entendimento das reações metal-escória na elaboração das ligas de à base níquel. As ligas à base de níquel usualmente apresentam adições de magnésio com o intuito de melhoria da plasticidade destas o que permite o seu processamento através de processos de conformação mecânica. Neste trabalho foi realizada a modelagem termodinâmica deste sistema utilizando o modelo de células de Kapoor-Frohberg-Gaye e o módulo PARROT® do pacote Thermo-Calc® com objetivo de complementar o banco de dados SLAG®. Como resultado foi obtido um conjunto de parâmetros termodinâmicos que descrevem as fases deste sistema.

Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts, The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10-7 atm. The concentration of CU2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10-7 atm at 1300 °C. The activities of CuO0.5 and AsO1.5 in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of SiO2 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2x 103 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol. Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300°C. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags. As part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Petroleum Research Laboratory are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the Appalachian region. The increasing demand for petroleum and its products and the increasing cost of exploratory drilling tend to emphasize the importance of improving the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Published reports setting forth the pertinent facts of these operations may help others to profit by the experience. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in West Virginia by the Piedmont Oil and Gas Co., the Ryan Oil Co., and Water floods , Inc., on their Roane County leases in the Walton and Clover Rush Run pools. The principal oil-producing horizon underlying the area studied is the Big Injun sand, at approximately 2,000 feet. The sand is often referred to as blanket sand because it underlies much of the State and is oil-productive in many localities. Most of the pools in the area were discovered during 1907 to 1910 and were similarly developed and operated.

The West Tintic mining district is located at the southern end of the Sheeprock Range in Juab County, Utah (fig. 1). Scheelite was discovered in the area during 1940, and the Desert Tungsten Co. began mining in May 1942. The ore was shipped to the Metals Reserve Co. chemical treatment plant at Salt Lake City during the war. A Bureau of Mines development project was established on property controlled by the Desert Tungsten Co. Work was started during September 1942 and completed in February 1943. The program included removal of overburden in the mine area to facilitate geologic napping, followed by surface trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling (figs. 2,. 3, 4, and 5). Eleven diamond-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were drilled from the surface. Sixty-one samples from the surface trenches and diamond drill holes were assayed. The logs of the holes are given in table 2. Assay results of samples from the surface trenches and diamond drill holes are listed in tables 1 and 3. Geologists of the U.S. Geological Survey mapped the mineralized area during the project period. The scheelite deposits occur in limestone areas adjacent to intrusive m9.sses, which are principally monzonite. The ore bodies are pyrometasomatic in origin, but consist of two somewhat different types: (1) a series of veins occupying fault zones in limestone and (2) tactite bodies immediately adjacent to the limestone. The veins in the limestone have been the most productive of the two types.

This study was investigated about physico-chemical parameter such as water temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients and total organic carbon (TOC). CTD (Model: Sea-Bird 911 Plus) castings were carried out on two transects in the northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean. As a part of the Korea Deep-sea Environment Study (KODES), inorganic nutrients and TOC were determined at 41 stations located from 131° to 136°W along 10.5°N and from 17° to 5°N along 131.5°W (Fig. 1). We particularly chose KODES Long-term Monitoring Station (St. KOMO) to observe for the annually environmental baseline study in the contract area. [ ]

"The microstructure of Al-10Si-0.3Mg-0.5Mn alloy with 0.27% Zr and 0.19% V addition was quantitatively analysed and compared to the base material. The addition of Zr and V in the AlSi10Mg alloy exhibit a beneficial effect on the Si modification, resulting in the reduction of the size of eutectic Si particles on both as-cast and T6 conditions. The quantitative image analysis results show that the Zr and V addition and T6 treatment can reduce the size of the intermetallic phases. In addition, the presence of Zr and V is favour to the partial dissolution of the intermetallic phases during the T6 treatment. Different heat treatment procedures were tested to optimize treatment parameters. The mechanical properties of the alloys were evaluated using hardness measurements and tensile tests. The results show that the addition of Zr and V can remarkably improve the mechanical properties on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys is discussed.INTRODUCTION Al-Si-Mg foundry alloys have been widely used in automotive and aerospace industries due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, heat-treatable capability and excellent castability. The alloying elements such as Cu, Mn, Fe are traditionally added into Al-Si-Mg alloys to improve their mechanical properties (Mohamed, Samuel, Samuel & Doty, 2009). In recent years, the attention has been paid to the effect of the transition elements such as Zr, V, Ti, etc, as minor alloying additives, on the properties of aluminum alloys (Elhadari, Patel, Chen, & Kasprzak, 2011; Kasprzak, Amirkhiz & Niewczas, 2014; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak, Friedman & Chen, 2015; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak & Chen, 2014; Mahmudi, Sepehrband, Ghasemi & 2006; Meng, Cui, Zhao & Zuo, 2013). Kasprzak et al., (2014) and Shaha et al., (2015) reported that additions of Zr, V, and Ti in Al-Si-Cu-Mg cast alloys can improve the alloy mechanical properties at high temperature by forming stable intermetallics and precipitates on as-cast and heat treatment conditions. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of near-eutectic and eutectic Al–Si cast alloys depend not only on the chemical composition but also, even more importantly, on microstructural features such as the morphology and size of eutectic silicon and intermetallic particles, which are present on both as-cast and heat treatment conditions (Mohamed et al., 2009). However, there is rather limited information on the effect of Zr and V on the microstructure features and mechanical properties of near-eutectic Al-Si-Mg cast alloys."

In this work, activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using Sewage sludge as starting material. The ACs were pyrolyzed in an inert atmosphere at 550 °C after independent chemical treatment with ZnCl2 or KOH with ratio of 1:1. The materials were used as adsorbents for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized using adsorption/desorption nitrogen isotherm, SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results showed that copper removal could be linked to surface pH and compounds present on the surface of adsorbent. KOH-treated adsorbent has smaller surface area (186 m2 g-1) than ZnCl2-treated adsorbent (192 m2 g-1), however, KOH-treated adsorbent exhibited higher removal of Cu(II). The performance of KOH-treated adsorbent could be attributed to the presence of basic groups on the adsorbent surface. Liu isotherm model gave the best description of the equilibrium data. From the Liu isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacities at 298 K for KOH-treated, ZnCl2-treated and sewage sludge (without inorganic activation) adsorbents are 31.85, 19.79 and 3.513 mg g-1, respectively. The best desorption experiment was obtained using 1.50 mol L-1 of HNO3 as eluent. Recoveries of Cu(II) from Cu(II)-loaded adsorbents are 98.9% (ZnCl2-treated) and 95.5% (KOH-treated.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for the coal industry — particularly in Asia — the power plants being planned or under construction are designed to use coal as fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal that, in turn, has encouraged many in the industry to develop new coal mines. Indonesia is a country that has enjoyed substantial growth in coal production. This developing country has 195 million people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands. It has quickly emerged as the third-largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface-mining methods.

While American scientific literature contains much information upon geologic conditions controlling the production of oil in Rumania, copper in Chile, and other fuel and metallic resources in many foreign countries, it is singularly lacking in data about the nonmetallics outside of the United States. Thus, though the United States is the outstanding market for European high-quality refined kaolin, and for the chinaware, porcelain, and other products of the European ceramics industries, American literature contains only the briefest references to the deposits from which the raw kaolin utilized is obtained. To the writer, to whom has come in the past year the opportunity of visiting a number of these deposits personally, they have proved of extreme interest both commercially and geologically. It is the latter phase that is discussed in this paper. The older and now largely crystalline rock areas of France, Germany, and other parts of western Europe contain numerous pegmatite dikes of which the upper portions have been subjected to surface weathering and kaolinization in much the same way as those of the eastern portion of the United States. Like the latter, the European pegmatite kaolins have long been known for their freedom from iron and other impurities offensive to the china and porcelain manufacturer. Unfortunately, they are also, like the American deposits, individually of small size and noted for their high costs of production. Deposits of sedimentary clay similar in many respects to the high-quality sedimentary kaolins of Georgia and South Carolina are known and worked, notably in southern Germany and in the Newton Abbott district of Devon and Dorset in England. In general, their relationship to the parent rock from which they were derived is more evident than in the United States and the individual deposits are of smaller areal extent and less regular in outline. While these deposits are of considerable economic importance they did not, because of their similarity to deposits in America, attract and hold the interest of the writer to the extent that several other types of deposits did. IN THE past year, Jaffee and Campbell&apos; and Finlay and Snyder2 reported on the mechanical properties of titanium-base alloys, some of which were in the same ranges of composition as are covered in this paper. In this paper, evidence confirming that given by Finlay and Snyder on the effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen on titanium will be presented; and, in addition, new data will be given on the effects of these elements on the flow properties and phase transformation of titanium. Materials and Preparation of Alloys The preparation and general properties of iodide titanium have been adequately described elsewhere.&apos; , As-deposited iodide titanium rod, prepared at Battelle, of Vickers hardness less than 90 was employed as the base metal in the present work. This was the same material as that used by Finlay and Snyder.2 The probable analysis reported by them for standard quality metal holds here also: N 0.005 pct, 0 0.01 pct, C 0.03 pct, Fe <0.04 pct, A1 <0.05 pct, Si <0.03 pct, and Ti 99.85 pct. Carbon was added in the form of flake graphite supplied by the Joseph Dixon Crucible Co. Oxygen was added in the form of c.p. grade TiO, powder, produced by J. T. Baker Chemical Co. Nitrogen was added in Ti3N4 powder, supplied by the Remington Arms Co. Individual ingots weighed 7 or 8 g. Carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen was added by placing the corresponding powder in a capsule made from as-deposited iodide titanium rods and melting the capsule with the balance of the charge. The charge was are-melted with a tungsten electrode on a water-cooled copper hearth under a partial vacuum of very pure argon (99.92 pct minimum). Melting was practically contamination free. Vick-ers hardness increases of less than 10 points were normal for unalloyed iodide titanium control melts. Nitrogen analyses of are-melted iodide titanium showed a nitrogen content of 0.005 pct, about the same as is present in the as-deposited rod. No tungsten pickup was found in a melt of iodide titanium analyzed for tungsten. Weight losses in melting nitrogen-free alloys were very small and varied consistently from nil to 0.015 g (0 to 0.2 pct). This permitted the use of nominal composition for these alloys. Chemical analyses made for carbon, which can be analyzed conveniently by combustion methods, justified this procedure. Where nitrogen was added, considerable splattering took place. Here it was necessary to analyze for nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method. The ingots were hot rolled at 850°C to about 0.045 in. thick. After hot rolling, the strips were descaled by mechanical grinding, and then given a cold reduction of 5 to 10 pct to insure a uniform thickness throughout the length of the specimen. The edge strips and the tensile strips were annealed in a vacuum of 1x10-4 mm Hg pressure for 3 1/2 hr at 850°C and furnace cooled. Methods of Investigation Hardness Measurements: At least five Vickers hardness measurements were taken using a 10-kg load on each sample in the following conditions: (1) top and bottom of each ingot, (2) top and bottom surface of as-rolled and annealed sheet, and (3) on cross-section of annealed sheet and all quenched specimens. Tensile Tests: Tensile tests were conducted on Baldwin-Southwark testing machines having load ranges of 600 or 2000 lb. Tests were made on 1-in. gauge-length specimens, 3 1/4-in. overall length, 1/2 in. wide, 0.040 in. thick, with a reduced section 1 1/4 in. long and 0.250 in. wide. Two SR-4, A-7 strain gauges, one mounted on each side of the specimen, were used to measure the strain over a limited range to determine the modulus of elasticity. After the modulus of elasticity readings had been taken, load vs. strain readings were taken, using only one strain gauge, at increments of 0.0001 in. until the yield points were passed and then at 0.001-in. increments to the limit of the strain-gauge indicator (0.02 in.). Strain readings above 0.02 in. per in. were taken every 0.01 in., using dividers to measure the strain between the 1-in. gauge marks until the maximum load had been reached. Crosshead speed, when using the SR-4 gauges, was 0.005 in. per min, and, when using dividers, 0.01 in. per min. Flow Curves: Flow curves were determined using the true stress-true strain data obtained during the tension test. The usefulness of this type of information has been dealt with very adequately elsewhere by L. R. Jackson,&apos; J. H. Hollomon,6 and many others. Flow curves of true stress vs. true strain could be converted to the more conventional cold-work curve of 0.2 pct offset yield strength vs. percentage of cold reduction by means of the transformation, 1/1 = 1/1-R, where R is the fraction reduction in cold working. Thus, the true strains corresponding to percentage reduction can be calculated, and the 0.2 pct offset yield strengths scaled off the — 6 curve by taking the true stresses corresponding to the values of 6 + 0.002 strain. Heat Treatment: For the transformation studies, the alloys were heat treated in a horizontal-tube furnace using a dried 99.92 pct argon atmosphere, and quenched into water. At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

"With continuous mining industry development and dressing plant scale expansion, flotation cell is developed towards to large scale and intelligence. Based on flotation cell scale-up theory and industrial practice, KYF-320 air-forced mechanical flotation cell with effective volume of 320m3 was successfully developed by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM) and adopted by China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., Ltd, Luming project of China Railway Resource Group Co., Ltd, and Toromocho project of Chinalco in Peru. In this paper, the structure and technical characteristics of KYF-320 flotation cell are introduced, and the application of that equipment in China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., LTD is demonstrated. The tank of KYF-320 flotation cell is cylinder-shaped, 8200mm in diameter and 7500mm high, with double froth lauders and large inclined angle cone bottom. 16 sets of KYF-320 flotation cells of which the processing capacity is 26,000,000 tons/a, are used in the second phase project of China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., LTD. Their stable running shows the long life of impeller and stator and the power intensity (power consumption divided by effective volume of flotation cell) of KYF-320 flotation cell is only 0.73kW/m3 which is significantly less than that of small scale flotation cells. The industrial production obtains good results that the Cu grade of final concentrate of entire flotation circuit is 22.90% at the recovery of 86.73%, when Cu grade of feed is 0.35%, which indicates that KYF-320 flotation cell has good performance and can be widely used in large scale mine."

Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble, was second in bauxite and scrap mica third in kaolin and oyster shell, and fourth in bentonite, dimension marble, and fire clay.

Thanks to strong industry support and longstanding partnerships, the University of Arizona has provided extensive pre-college mining education and outreach for more than a decade. These efforts to promote mining-related degree programs and the wide variety of indemand career opportunities reach thousands of middle and high school students and hundreds of teachers every year. The School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources is constantly looking at ways to help students overcome barriers into degree programs. But competition among degree programs for talent is fierce, and outreach has not made a big enough difference in the number of students pursuing mining engineering degrees. With workforce shortages threatening to undermine the industry, more is needed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 500 new mining engineering jobs each year, and according to a study by Deloitte (2023) nearly 50 percent of skilled engineers will reach retirement age in the next decade. At the same time, the 14 accredited mining or mineral engineering degree programs in the United States are producing fewer than 200 graduates annually (Society of Mining Professors and Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, 2021). To better understand mining’s competitive position, the School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources conducted a comprehensive study to determine (1) how prospective college students, parents and educators perceive the industry, related careers and the mining engineering degree, (2) factors affecting students’ choices of degrees and career plans and (3) the roles parents and educators play and how they influence students. This article is the first of two installments to discuss the results. This installment focuses on what students, parents and educators think about mining and where they get those impressions, as well as the role parents and educators play in influencing students’ choices of careers and degrees. The second installment, scheduled for publication in a later issue of Mining Engineering, looks at what students are seeking in their degrees and careers, and how mining compares with other degrees and industries.

The interphase modification activity of 1,3-phenylene dimaleimide (also known as m-phenylene bismaleimide (BMI)) has been studied in composites based on magnesium hydroxide (60% w/w) and a polypropylene block copolymer (PPBC) that featured an ethylene-rich elastomeric impact modifier phase. BMI was found to be a unique product that led to significant simultaneous improvements in composite strength and toughness, even at the high filler levels. BMI modification was found to promote encapsulation of filler particles with the elastomeric phase of the PPBC together with formation of a PP boundary layer of increased crystalline content.

Abandoned uranium mines in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota were sampled for uranium, radium, and rare earth elements during 1992 and 1993. Analyses of water samples from several shallow ponds in the mine pits showed pH values between 3 and 4 with uranium concentrations between 1600 and 2600 ppb. Rare earth elements and their respective isotopes were analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and were referenced to a shale normalization pattern. All samples showed an enrichment in the middle rare earth elements. Rare earth levels often were greater than 0.2 ppm. At one site, the concentrations of lanthanides were 150,000 times above background levels. While the southern Black Hills have long been known for rich uranium ore deposits, these analyses show that significant levels of rare earth elements also are present, indicating that the potential exist for future development.

In fact, there is little doubt that a well-organized program of accident prevention Will bring about a 'material production cost reduction due to increased efficiency, lower labor turnover, fewer delays due to accidents, better satisfied workmen, and a direct saving in compensation costs as well as many other items of expense.The more closely a. person is connected with the work of accident prevention, the more he becomes a believer in the value of amity in human relationships and the more he is able to exercise a spirit of toleration, fairness, justness, and helpfulness toward the problems of others, whatever those problems may be. Human nature responds to just these expressions of good willAnother great and invaluable effect of working for safety, is the fact that it is building up in the mind an appreciation of that which is constructive and, conversely, in opposition to that which is destructive In other words; the person who is sincerely striving to prevent accidents because they are destructive, costly, tad injurious, is subconsciously training his mind to look on any proposition from a constructive point of view. Working for accident prevention and safety is about the finest social training any person can have. It does not make a Person a financial Wizard or an executive genius, but it does make for the highest type of citizenship.While humanitarian reasons alone should be sufficient to maze accident prevention work an important factor in every mining organization, there are other reasons as well, since it has been proved conclusively that there can be no efficiency and economy without safety, as somebody pays when safety is lacking. Every safety device pays dividends; every safety application evaded is an assessment and a loss. Dangerous conditions are the most expensive and extravagant conditions in or about a coal mine. The economic gains are of considerable interest to all coal mining companies and this is brought about as before stated--through decreased compensation rates, the reduction of labor turnover, etc."
