In this paper presented are the criteria used when assessing the harmfulness of shocks affecting the buildings. Those criteria are based on the value of speed or accelerations of building vibrations. Presented is the scale of harmfulness of vibrations of Langefors and Kihlstrom, Bureau of Mines, and SWD contained in the Polish Norm PN-85/B-02170. The parameters of the mining shocks measured by the Lubin coal mine station were compared with the parameters calculated as per the correlations (regression curves). The average acceleration calculated from the correlations for eight measurements is only two per cent higher than the actual one. But the average frequency of vibrations calculated from the correlations for eight measurements is as much as 2.22 times lower than the actual one. In order to analyse whether that takes place in the whole range of the energy of shocks compared were the results of calculations from the correlations for various magnitudes of shocks and various distances from their epicentre with the results of the measurements. From that it follows that only for the shocks of the highest energies the lowering of the frequency of vibrations by two times causes movement from the higher zone of harmfulness to the lower one (for example from the IV to III). In the one-family houses in Lubin there were the damages that are characteristic for not only for the III but also for the IV sphere of harmfulness as per the SWD scale. That should be explained via further research and maybe it would be feasible to draw out a new correlation to determine the frequencies only for high values of energy of shocks and determine the preciseness of the acceleration and frequency correlations used presently.

The following propositions and corollaries are intended to present, as concisely as possible, some of the evidences gathered while studying the microstructure of steel. Each proposition is accompanied by photo-micrographs showing the structure of illustrative samples. But it must be understood that the special instances thus chosen for illustration are by no means the only ones on the examination of which the propositions are based. On the contrary, they have been taken almost at random among a great many, in some instances more than a hundred, similar cases. Proposition I. A slow and undisturbed cooling from a temperature x or higher produces crystallization. Plate L, Plate II., Fig. 1, and Plate V., Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 show the crystalline structure of several pieces of steel. Plate I. reveals this structure in the center of a slowly-cooled Bessemer ingot, 1.5 feet from the top. Plate II., Pig. 1, is from a small 2-in, square testingot of the same heat, slowly cooled. Plate V., Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 show the structure of different parts of steel rails. The original photographs were all magnified 70 diameters, and have been reduced in engraving to 63, or to 55 diameters, as shown in the plates. Proposition 11. Undisturbed cooling from an initial temperature lower than x is not accompanied by crystallization. Plate III., Fig. 5, shows the structure of a piece of rail-steel forged from a white heat until it had fallen to dull-red. The structure is almost amorphous. Practically no crystallization has taken place during the subsequent cooling. Corollary.—Pieces of steel finished at a temperature lower than x do not take a crystalline structure.

Oxide gold reserves are being rapidly depleted, especially in regions with long histories of gold mining, such as the Black Hills of South Dakota. However, these districts often have substantial additional deposits, where gold is refractory. It is not amenable to traditional cyanide extraction due to the presence of sulfide minerals that encapsulate or otherwise preclude the economic extraction of the gold. Several technologies have been developed to render refractory sulfide deposits amenable to traditional cyanide processing. These include roasting and pressure autoclaving. Unfortunately, these oxidation processes require substantial capital investment and incur significant operating costs. Microorganisms that obtain energy for their life processes by the oxidation of iron sulfides can be used to treat gold-bearing refractory sulfide minerals. As the bacteria convert the sulfide to sulfate, they expose any gold associated with the sulfide matrix. This makes the gold amenable to cyanide extraction.

The countries of Asia and the Pacific have large resources of diverse minerals. Australia and China have extensive mineralization that are commercially being exploited. The major minerals in Australia with known reserves adequate for both domestic demand and export markets include bauxite, clays, copper, diamond, gold, iron ore, lead, manganese, mineral sands (titanium minerals), nickel, salt, silver, tin, uranium, and zinc. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, magnesite, molybdenum, rare earths, titanium (ilmenite), tungsten, and vanadium. It also has about 55 billion tons of iron ore, albeit with an average grade of only 30 % to 35 % elemental iron content. With the exception of chromium and copper, China has significant resources of a wide array of minerals and metals, based on its production and/or export capability for these commodities. Additionally, India has significant resources of bauxite and mineral sands; Indonesia, bauxite, copper, nickel, and tin; Malaysia, tin and associated titanium; Mongolia, copper, fluorspar, and lead-zinc; New Caledonia, nickel; New Zealand, gold and iron sand; North Korea, magnesite; Papua New Guinea, copper, gold and mineral sands; Philippines, copper, chromite, and gold; and Sri Lanka, gemstones. Moreover, there appears to be extensive mineralization III Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, but they have yet to be definitively delineated.

Hydraulic cutting tests made on samples of Pennsylvania anthracite (3,700 psi and 260 gpm) were promising enough for the Bureau to establish a full scale experiment in an anthracite mine. Water pressure and quantity for mining anthracite were arbitrarily established at 5,000 psi and 300 gpm (1,000 hp). For full-volume flow, hydraulic pressure is controlled by orifice size with the displacement pump. The hydraulic jumbo was designed for maneuvering on pitches from 0° to 20° in any direction and for a coalbed ranging in thickness from 10 feet 6 inches to 15 feet. All motions of the jumbo are by oil hydraulics. Jet flow is controlled (start-stop) at the face, through an interlocked pushbutton system. One button is in the operator's cab; one, at the pump station; and one (a safety shutoff), near the mining face. To December 1962, 7,400 tons of bed material had been mined at an average rate of 0.800 ton per minute, with an average power requirement of 14.125 kilowatt-hours per ton. In January 1963, the objective was changed from an engineering-development basis to a research basis--to determine, ultimately, the most efficient level of operating characteristics for maximum response, as measured by mining-out rate. This research phase of the project is not yet complete, but conclusions, and the method of arriving at them, will be made the subject of another Bureau publication. It should be noted that as of December 1963 nearly 13,000 tons of bed material had been mined, at rates as high as 1. 3 tons per minute for a complete face advance.

Humphrey, temporary chairman, member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, who made a brief statement of the reason for the meeting. Lieut. Col. Charles W. Kutz, Corps of Engineers, U. S. "In the land-pebble district of Florida a lively interest in the possibilities of obtaining increased recoveries of phosphate rock is evident. Research in several directions is being carried on by companies operating in the district to increase the yields obtained by the washing plants. The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with this research program to promote more efficient plant practice and to avoid unnecessary depletion of mineral resources.Washing practice, as carried on in the district at present for the recover of phosphate rock from the crude ores or matrix, is not a complicated process. Flow sheets of the several companies are similar, although the equipment varies with the preferences of the individual operators. For disintegrating the matrix log washers are favored, although revolving drums equipped with flights to break up lumps of clay are also used. Fine sand is removed by screening. Vibrating screens have become well established in the district, although stationary flat screens and trammels are also employed.The writer acknowledges with appreciation the cooperation of the phosphate companies in the land-pebble district; suggestions and criticism by Will. In these sizes the phosphate grains are accompanied by grains of sand - largely quartz - of the same size, and recovery of these phosphate grains as a commercial product is not possible by simple washing methods. Phosphate recoveries approaching complete extraction can only be effecte by applying metallurgical processes, either mechanical or chemical. As yet, most of these processes have not advanced much beyond the laboratory or perhaps the pilot-plant stage. Such processes may have some application to the beneficiation of phosphatic ores or washer rejects, but a discussion of them is not within the scope of this paper."

A newly developed coal flotation collector ZFC and its flotation characteristics for five different coals were introduced in this paper. ZFC is an emulsion composed of 27% diesel oil, 70% water and 3% surfactants. The main surfactant is synthesized with oil which is environmental favorable and reproducible. Compared flotation experiments show that, at the same dosage, ZFC give 2%~5% recovery promotion than typical collector with only a slightly ash content increment, but saving 70% diesel oil. Zeta-potential and Wetting heat measurement indicate that the surfactant helps the interactions between oil and coal particles, the industrial application tests in several coal preparation plants demonstrate that ZFC is suitable both in technical and economical aspects.

The overall kinetics of oxidation of single partic1es of chalcopyrite have been studied for temperatures up to 1273 K. The experiments were conducted in a stationary bed reactor using a non-isothermal technique. Any mass and heat transfer effects on the kinetics of oxidation were eliminated by using a high-enough gas flowrate. Up to temperatures of 873 K, pore-bl1ocking kinetics were applicable, whereas above 873 K, power-law kinetics gave a satisfactory fit of the data. The activation energy was 215 kJ/mol below 754 Kand 23.7 kJ/mol above 1,060 K. Predominance area diagrams were constructed at various temperatures and used in conjunction with X-ray analyses of partially oxidized samples to determine the intermediate phases formed during the reaction. The analysi1s also provides a justification for the kinetic models used. The results indicate that the reaction rate is first order with respect to oxygen concentration and inversely proportional to the square of the particle size throughout the ranges of temperature studied.

The necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of a multicomponent phase with respect to infinitesinzal fluctuations are derived and transformed to be written in terms of activity coeffcients and mole fractions rather than in terms of the customary second deritlatives of the free energy. NECESSARY conditions for the stability of a multi-component system were derived by Gibbs as early as 1876.' However, as the usefulness of these conditions is greatly enhanced by the simplicity of their translation in terms of functions of common usage, the present contribution establishes these conditions in terms of activities or activity coefficients-and mole fractions. It was shown in another article2 that not only may these conditions be used for the prediction of the appearance of new phases, but they may also provide a check on the orders of magnitude of the interaction coefficients involved. "Spinodal" decomposition is said to occur when, at constant temperature and pressure, the system is unstable with respect to infinitesimal fluctuations in composition. As a result, the "phases" which appear may be attained through continuous changes in the system rather than discontinuous ones, and, consequently, the free energy of these phases may be described by a unique continuous free-energy function. For a binary system, the familiar curve of Fig. 1 illustrates the case we wish to extend to a multicom-ponent system. The conditions to be written pertain to the decomposition of a system of n moles into moles of phase moles of phase v, ...hen moles of phase 9, where the phases a, ...v, ...9 are—at least initially-arbitrarily close in composition to that of the original phase. INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. "Nowadays, there is an increasing interest for realistic spring-block models capable of addressing precursor phenomena in catastrophic earthquake-induced landslides. By pre-defining the constitutive law between externally applied stress and induced local strain increments, the dynamic behaviour of the rock/soil slope can be studied by means of the distribution of slip events at the interface between the soil and the bedrock. It is shown that by relaxing the assumption of constant of externally applied stress rate and local strain increments, a robust 2D spring-block model can be formulated for studying triggered landslides. A cellular automaton is built in order to examine the dynamic behaviour and the stability of rock/soil slopes during the initiation of a landslide. The type and nature of the failure plane, as well as the triggering mechanism is studied. The different dynamic evolution modes of the slope can be mapped to specific shape parameters of the corresponding distributions of the incremental displacements. The proposed spring-block model can be used in order to understand, predict and minimize the impact of catastrophic landslides triggered by earthquakes.INTRODUCTIONEarthquakes have long been introduced as one of the major cause of landslides. Earthquake induced landslides are of great importance because they can cause considerable damage and life casualties. Existing analyses can provide landslide concentration, i.e. the number of landslide sources per square kilometer of surface area, as well as the distance from the earthquake source, which is related to the strength of shaking, the slope steepness, which is connected to shear stress, and finally the rock type, which is referred to material strength (Keefer, 1984). In spite of their great importance in social and economic life, earthquake-induced landslides are still considered as an open geotechnical problem. The dependence of the number and distribution of landslides on earthquake magnitude and ground shaking intensities is a crucial factor for the description and determination of the phenomenon. The hazardous types of earthquake-induced landslides, the most susceptible geologic materials and the reactivation of landslides originally triggered by nonseismic activity are some important topics for areas affected by landslides. Most of these areas present an irregular and asymmetric shape with respect to epicenters and fault ruptures, and also show a strong correlation with magnitude (Keefer, 1984, 2000). The number of landslides caused by an earthquake generally increases with increasing earthquake magnitude. Keefer (1984) presented a magnitude scale in order to quantify the number of earthquake-induced landslides. Malamud et al. (2004) have proposed an independent landslide-event magnitude scale on the earthquakes, based on the logarithm of the total landslides number associated with an event. The aforementioned studies try to relate the landslide magnitude scale to the visible effects of the triggering mechanisms."

This paper discusses the technical issues and stakeholder collaborative processes which resulted in achieving a balance between the reclamation of abandoned mine sites, providing affordable housing, and preservation of open space at the French Gulch Site. Through this process, it was discovered that mine site reclamation would need to be conducted in conjunction with two priorities for community sustainable development: providing affordable housing for locals who work in the resort town of Breckenridge, and open space preservation. It was found that conducting these activities concurrently would result in providing resources necessary to complete mine site reclamation. The first phase of the affordable housing development is almost completed. This development resulted in redevelopment of mining impacted lands and was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a National Smart Growth Award in 2002.Negotiations are also underway to preserve the remaining 1,800 acres of land held by the mining company as open space. This transaction will in turn provide resources to address water quality issues associated with mine discharges.

Many reports have been written about the issues surrounding small scale miners’ challenges in Namibia; yet little has been done to address these challenges. There has been a fragmented approach to address these challenges. Various government arms and donor organizations have utilized piece meal methods in the past in trying to make improvements on the productivities across the sector, but with no meaningful success. This has led to the design and implementation of inappropriate technologies and support services for the sector. The structures of many of the semi-precious stones mining businesses are informal, with very little royalties received by the government. Miners often work informally or illegally and they fear government interference and they distrust outsiders, resulting in them withholding production information. The presence of small scale miners is quite often associated with major challenges, including poor safety and environmental management standards, the spread of communicable diseases and poor working conditions. The majority of the miners employ uncontrolled extraction techniques which damage the crystals and mineral specimens, resulting in intermediate and final products of low quality along with high wastage at the extraction stage. The vision of the Namibian government is to expand the range and value of semi-precious stones and jewelry products processed within Namibia, while curbing illicit flows of raw stones. This will simultaneously secure maximum benefit for the country. This study investigated the interventions aimed at making the small scale mining sector in Namibia sustainable. A baseline study was conducted to analyze the current situation and characterize the industry, including a SWOT analysis. Information was collected through questionnaires, interviews, consultative meetings, field visits and workshops in order to profile the sector. The baseline study results were used in developing interventions for improving artisanal and small scale mining operations. The main challenges for the Namibian semi-precious sector were identified as: factual information about raw material resources and its beneficiation are insufficient or not available, lack of skills, lack of education and access to finances, rudimentary exploration and mining practices, trading and logistics that are not functioning effectively and inadequate sector governance. One key finding of this study was that Namibia is not benefiting through value addition due partly to illicit flows of the uncut stones and to the fact that lapidary is not much pronounced to a greater extent. The following strategic interventions were identified as key in ensuring the sustainability of the small mining sector in Namibia: conducting geological assessment to identify new deposits and quantify the existing ones, improving exploration and mining practices, investing in education and training, creating an enabling environment and improving the sector governance and strengthening the sector organization and supporting the infrastructure.

The Energy Act of 1992 has many users of ac-induction motors eyeing premium-efficiency motors with mixed feelings and perhaps some confusion. When the October 1997deadline arrives for compliance with the1992 standards, the winners will be the environment due to reduced need for more power generating plants and the petroleum economy because of reduced dependency on foreign oil. But what will it mean for industrial users? The most obvious benefit is the potential for smaller electricity bills. Motors account for about 64% of the electricity consumed in the United States, at a yearly cost of $112 billion. Every 1% reduction in motor demand cuts 0.64%, or $716 million, off the industry wide bill. Higher efficiency motors also run cooler. This lightens the load on air-conditioning systems and further reduces plant demand. Lower total demand can lead to lower rates by helping to minimize peak-demand surcharges. As rates increase over time, these savings get bigger.

An alternative method for dewatering slurry (tailings) is the use of geocontainers (MacTubes). The practical application of this work was carried out in the concentrator plant of the Raura Mining Company, located in the occidental mountain between Huánuco and Lima in Peru?s central highland. For the development of the research, the MATLAB R2012a software MGeST (v. 1.0) was used (Slurry Geocontainer Maccaferri Treatment). MGeST is used for sizing MacTubes, which allows determination of the most important design parameters, such as height (H), filling residual pressure (P1O ), strength of geosynthetic (T), and dehydration height. Compared with GeoCoPS v. 3.0, there is a maximum difference of 3% between the results obtained. The tailing to be treated in the MacTube have a specific weight of 11.62 kN/m3. After several tests it was determined that a MacTube of an apparent opening size of 0.22 mm was required for this specific weight.
