ABSTRACT: This paper presents further developments of the principle of Construction Process Mechanics of rockmasses, The principle of loading variations analyses in space-time is systematically described. To demonstrate the applicability of the theory and method, the effect of the construction process of two practical engineering cases are analysed. Possible impacts to the water quality and production capacity of ground water supply wells by blasting is a common cause of complaints for blasting contractors, mining companies, and local regulatory authorities. The major complaints of changes in well water quality include; turbidity, discolored water (red, brown, black, yellow and milky water), and nitrate and/or coliform contamination. The major complaints for changes in well water production capacity include: loss of quantity production, air in water and/or water lines, damage to pump, and damage to well screen or borehole.

The rate of hydration influences many important physical properties of gypsum. Previous research examined the rate of gypsum hydration and related this to compressive strength and microstructure development using BET specific surface area analysis. The analysis of gypsum porosity in combination with BET surface area and rate of hydration remains to be done. In the present study, mesoporosity is analyzed using the numerical method of Barrett, Joyner and Halenda (BJH) to gain a greater understanding of gypsum hydration and microstructure development. The rate of hydration has a significant effect on mesoporosity of the gypsum matrix. The results reveal the effect of mesoporosity and hydration rate on some macro physical properties of gypsum.

Mining operations take a tremendous toll on equipment, operating in difficult conditions day after day. Owners and operators cannot make the job any easier, but they can give their equipment an advantage. Equipment life may be extended through preventive maintenance and the proper application of quality lubricants. This means lubricants that are made to last longer and stand up better to the punishment mining equipment must endure. There are several practices to consider as part of a successful preventive maintenance program. A good place to start is to review original equipment manufacturer recommendations about servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. If these recommendations have not been followed, owners and operators must begin periodic service work on equipment to help minimize equipment down-time and extend engine life.

Sperrylite is one of the most abundant platinum minerals globally, valued for its economic importance but also known for its highly refractory nature, making it difficult to process via the conventional route. This study explores the oxidative leaching of sperrylite using a cyanide–ferricyanide system, with a key focus on characterisation of the mineral and surface speciation under varied leaching conditions using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The parameters investigated include the effect of sodium cyanide concentration, the use of potassium ferricyanide as an oxidant, copper sulphate pentahydrate as a catalyst, as well as the effects of temperature and particle size. A limited set of leaching tests was carried out to study the surface chemistry rather than optimising dissolution conditions. This approach identified mineral oxidation states and shifts in binding energies, prior to and post leaching. XPS analysis of sperrylite’s surface chemistry identified key species, comprising the bulk Pt(II)–As (≈73 eV) and As(–I)–Pt (≈41.8 eV) states, together with surface oxidation products Pt(II)–O (≈72 eV), Pt(IV)–O (≈74.5 eV), As(III)–O (≈43 eV) and As(V)–O (44.5 eV). Leaching led to the removal of pre-existing oxides on the ultra-finely ground sample, exposing the underlying bulk species. In contrast, the crystalline sample with an initial low concentration of oxides, generated higher amounts of fully oxidised species after leaching, reflecting greater surface reactivity.

This machine is an improvement on the well-known endless travelling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of- the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. Abstract: Triaxial tests were conducted on the schist specimens with various anisotropic angles under confining pressures of 0, 7 and 15 MPa, and axial stress-axial strains, were measured and plotted for various conditions. The results obtained reveal the effects of schistose on the strength and deformability of the rock very clearly. Peak strength of the specimens for 00 and 900 schistose orientations are nearly the same. Modulus of elasticity of this rock varies with anisotropic angle. For 0 orientation modulus of elasticity increases to a maximum. Confining pressure increases the peak strength and improves the rock deformability. However, this effect is not the same for various orientations, and there are no similar trends for each anisotropy direction. Analysis of the results shows that consideration of a linear failure criterion such as Mohr-Coulomb is appropriate for the prediction of rock behaviour up to 10 MPa, rather than a non-linear one. The analysis also reveals that the friction angle and cohesion are affected by the anisotropy orientation, and this effect is more important for the cohesion than the friction angles. Cette analyse aussi montre que l angle de frottement et cohsion est en relation de la direction no–isotrop, et cette effet est olus important pour le cohsion par a port de l angle de frottement . Analyse der Ergebnisse zeigt jener Überlegung Kriterium eines linearen Ausfalls wie zum Beispiel Mohr Coulomb passend für die Voraussage von Felsen Verhalten bis zu 10 MPa, anstatt eines nicht linear ist. Die Analyse offenbart auch, daß der Reibung Winkel und Bindekraft werden beeinflußt von der anisotropic Orientierung, und diese Wirkung wichtiger für die Bindekraft ist, als der Reibung Winkel

"Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

Bakelite is fairly widely known as a suitable material for the mounting of ore specimens, concentrates and tailings for microscopical study, but has not as yet had extensive application. It is the most suitable mount for specimens which are to be held in the mechanical holder of a polishing machine, based on that described by J. W. Vanderbilt*, which is installed in the Geological Department of the Melbourne University.Bakelite products are prepared by subjecting bakelite powder to a temperature of about 1600 C. under a pressure of approximately two tons per square inch for a period of four minutes. The shape and size of the products are governed by the use of suitably constructed dies. When the concentrate or tailing is mixed with the bakelite powder, a briquette is produced which can be polished so that the opaque minerals in the sample can be examined microscopically in the same way as in a piece of solid ore. An investigation of hazardous surface openings of abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills area of South Dakota has revealed: (1) tracing legal ownership of mineral claims via county courthouses is confusing, complex, and oftentimes misleading, (2) in general, the selected mine openings in this investigation are to be considered relatively high in risks and hazard potential which poses a threat to the general public, (3) mine closure procedures and designs can generally be categorically implemented depending on the overall situation of the particular mine opening with subsequent unit costs estimates, (4) few preventive state or federal legal measures exist to date concerning mine closures, and (5) liability damages relating to mine opening accidents usually involve expensive and complex common law cases.

Na etapa de flotação de minérios finos de ferro, usa-se como agente depressor o gritz de amido de milho. Tal produto orgânico para ser usado como reagente precisa ser gelatinizado para permitir que os grânulos do amido tenham capacidade de absorver água quando molhados ou expostos à umidade. Este processo pode ocorrer por efeito térmico através de água aquecida ou por um ativador térmico como soda cáustica, sendo o último usado na planta Casa de Pedra. Visando aperfeiçoar a preparação/gelatinização do amido de milho buscaram-se auxiliares químicos para reduzir a presença de grumos suspensos (amidos não gelatinizados), aumentar a eficiência da ação depressora e garantir maiores ganhos de recuperação metalúrgica do metal de interesse. O trabalho contemplou estudos com um agente auxiliar denominado SOFTEX 2011 da empresa TENSAC. Os testes foram feitos em escala de bancada com substituição da massa total de água usada na 1ª gelatinização do gritz de milho (solução com 10% de sólidos) pelo reagente SOFTEX 2011 nas proporções de 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; 2,5; 3,0; 3,5 e 4,0%. Os primeiros resultados demonstraram ganhos significativos em recuperação metalúrgica e uma melhor seletividade das espécies minerais. Fisicamente, observou-se boa transparência nas suspensões do gritz de amido de milho gelatinizado através de um aspecto como gel.

A lead-zinc-pyrite flotation middling was pressure oxidised to give residues containing iron hydroxy sulphates (a mixture of basic iron sulphate (BIS) and a hydrated iron sulphate (HIS)) and lead sulphate. Direct thiourea leaching of this residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold and silver, but thiourea consumption was high (56 kg/t) because of soluble iron(M) in the residue. Attempts were made to decrease the thiourea consumption by removing the water-soluble iron(M) or reducing it to iron(II). Water washing of the pressure oxidation residue removed most of the hydrated iron sulphate but little of the basic iron sulphate. Iron removal was only 12-20 per cent, depending on the number of washes, from one sample which was low in HIS, and 40-45 per cent in another which was high in HIS. Iron extraction was not appreciably increased by using dilute sulphuric acid (with or without additions of sodium sulphite), dilute phosphoric acid, or sodium chloride solution (150 g/L NaCI). Direct thiourea leaching of the water-washed residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold but only 49 per cent of silver, with a thiourea consumption of 27 kg/t. However, the application of a water wash followed by reduction of dissolved iron(III) with sodium sulphite in the presence of thiourea, and then thiourea leaching resulted in over 98 per cent extraction of gold and silver for a thiourea consumption of 26 kg/t.

The most important development in connection with the search for oil in Australia during 1940 was on the legislative side. Prior to 1939 legislative enactments in the various states with regard to prospecting for petroleum were such as to prohibit large-scale effort and to bar the major oil companies from operating. The preparation of the Wade Model Bill for the Commonwealth Government in 1939 and the acceptance of the Bill in principle by all States, has gone far to remove these obstacles. Amending Acts, largely based on the Alodel Bill, have now been passed by all States with the exception of New South Wales and Tasmania. In New South Wales an Amending Bill is being drafted, while the Govern-ment of Tasmania is preparing to introduce an Amending Bill provided there is any demand for it. Noteworthy developments followed immediately on the passing of these Amending Acts. The Shell Company (1)1 and the Superior Oil Company of California (2) too$ up large areas in Queensland and com-menced work during 1940. Caltex acquired a big tract of country in the Kimberley district of Western Australia (3) and has made application for an area in the Territory of Papua. An Australian company, The Phoenix Oil Extraction Co., has obtained a permit to prospect over an extensive area bordering the south coast of Western Australia (4). Other developments are foreshadowed. The Shell Company is making an intensive examination of its area in Queensland (I). Geological, geophysical and aerial surveys are in progress. Caltex has three geological parties in the held in Western Australia while Superior Oil Company of California has done some geological work in the interior of Queensland (2). None of these concerns envisages a drilling campaign in the near future. Much exploratory work is necessary. Further work has been done by the companies that were already operating in 1939, though an important Australian company - Oil Search—has abandoned the work of prospecting in Australia. This company has subleased its holdings, at North West Cape in Western Australia (;), to Caltex on a royalty basis. The company also maintains its holdings in, and connection with, the Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited, which is a combination of Standard Oil (New Jersey), Anglo-Iranian and Oil Search. This company is operating in the territories of Papua and New Guinea. Drilling Victoria.—Although a good deal of drilling was done in the LaBes Entrance Tertiary Basin of Victoria (7), no appreciable production of oil was obtained. Research performed on arcing faults and their interactions with electrical insulating materials within coal-mine power system enclosures are described. This work was performed at The Pennsylvania State University from December 1, 1976 through August 31, 1978. The thrust of this research has been divided into several primary areas. These include the development of a theoretical procedure for computation of three-phase and line-to-line arcing fault currents as a function of time, formulation of arc and tracking models so that arc voltages and energies may be computed, development of a simulation for pressure and temperature rises when a fault interacts with an electrical insulating material within an enclosure, experimental evaluation of electrical insulating materials in terms of their tendency to support and maintain an arc as well as their potential contribution to enclosure pressure rises, and integration of the above research areas to form overall procedures for theoretical and experimental evaluation. During the course of this research, consideration has been given to the possible effects? of an internal methane-air explosion within an enclosure as well as the potential influence of utilization-voltage-level, conductor spacings, and enclosure venting. Conclusions and recommendations address potential means for protection against enclosure failure, internal design considerations, and low-power testing procedures which might be used to evaluate insulating materials to be utilized within an enclosure.

Fractions of glass particles in the size range 0.5 to 5.0 were prepared by an elutriator that operates in a centrifugal field. Although mean sizes of commercially graded abrasive powders were ten times greater than those of samples prepared by the elutriator, frequency size plots for elutriator samples compared favorably. Efficiency of separation was low and amounts of material recovered by the elutriator were small, but the method should find use in preparation of small amounts of sized materials for laboratory investigations. The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1984 was $409.8 million, and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State, at 13.4:% over the previous high of 1983. Output of nearly all nonfuel minerals increased; phosphate rock was one of the exceptions, with no recorded output in 1984. Cement, crushed stone, lime, sand and gravel, and clays were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in fire clay and kaolin; fourth in bentonite, ferroalloys, and dimension marble; fifth in masonry cement, lime, and recovered sulfur; and sixth in portland cement. Alabama ranked 22d in the Nation in value of nonfuel minerals produced.
