G. Edmunds—Solid solubility is considered to be of either the interstitial or the substitutional type. Is it possible, in a binary alloy as the simplest case, that some of the solute atoms are present in the normal lattice sites (substitutionally or filling lattice vacancies) while simultaneously others are in interstitial positionss One might even ask whether a distribution of the two types may be the normal situation. H. M. Meyer—Metastable states of interstitial atoms occupying vacant lattice sites possibly occur as well as of substitutional atoms squeezed in between regular matrix positions. However (as we know since Hume-Rothery), the solute atoms choose between the two kinds of solutions; consequently, every solute will be unequivocally either substitutional or interstitial in the equilibrium state of the solid solution. M. Balicki—In view of the fact that the authors apparently correlate the analysis of the alloys at the ingot stage with the properties exhibited at the testing stage, I would like to ask whether this is a fully justifiable procedure. In other words, how good are their determinations of solute concentration for correlating them with the mechanical properties. The answer to this question may explain some of the divergencies. Assuming good enough homogenization of the samples and exact determination of mechanical properties the position of the plotted experimental points will depend solely upon the accuracy of composition determination. If this is not accurate, say due to loss or pickup of elements during processing from the ingot to the testing stage, or due to a systematic error in the method employed for obtaining solute concentration data, the points will deviate from their true position and may align themselves along a different curve than the one expected. H. V. Kinsey—We have been studying the creep-rupture properties of titanium-base alloys at 1000°F. In the course of this work, anomalies in behavior of the alloys that would suggest that the material under test was becoming stronger as the test progressed have been observed. If this was so, the most likely explanation that we could think of was that the test bars were absorbing oxygen and nitrogen from the air during the test and were thereby becoming strengthened. In an attempt to determine the strengthening effect of absorbed oxygen and nitrogen the following experiment was conducted. A length of cold-rolled titanium was supplied by the E. I. du Pont Co. Two test bars, having a 1/4 in. diam gauge length, were prepared from this material. One bar was tested in the as-received condition. The second bar was heated in air at 1550°F for 100 hr and subsequently air cooled prior to testing. A testing temperature of 1000°F was employed. The results of these tests are tabulated in table 11. In the author's opinion, is it reasonable to assume that the bar that was exposed to air at 1550°F for 100 hr was stronger because it absorbed oxygen and nitrogen from the air during this heat treatment? W. L. Finlay (authors' reply)—Direct experimental evidence for or against Mr. Edmunds' interesting suggestion will probably never be available. It seems possible, however, that mixed interstitial-substitutional solid solution might well occur with interstitial elements. The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

MR.]. G. TRAILL: My only excuse for contributing to the discussion on Mr. Hall's interesting paper is that I had the good fortune to be employed at Noranda during those romantic years, 1927 and 1928, when construction was at its height. The mine was in course of being rapidly prepared and brought into production, and the initial difficulties in crushing-plant and smelter were being met and overcome. They were stirring days, and perhaps those members who were with the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1927 sensed the atmosphere of excitement and activity that prevailed. Early History. Noranda must surely possess some of the most remarkable ore-bodies known to mining men, and the story of their development is pure romance. Ed. Horne's faith in the property, and the persistence of Thomson and Chadbourne, were richly rewarded in the end, but only after some very thin times had been experienced. In those early days access to the district was by the Kenojevis river and various portages to Osisko lake, on the shores of which the mine and smelter and the town of Noranda now stand. But all the early work was done on the Chadbourne claims, more than a mile to the west; through the b~sh. I have read a log of the events of that period, and through the whole tale of hard work, discouraging developments, occasional shortages of food, and constant danger from forest fires, can be read the faith and persistence of the men in charge. The Chadbourne ore was of that well-known type which, though just too low-grade to pay (with gold at $20 per ounce), is yet sufficiently encouraging to lead one on in the hope of striking something better. It was only as a last resort that work on the Chadbourne claims was suspended and a diamond drill brought to the gossan-covered hill beside the lake. The diamond-driller told me his version (it may be exaggerated) of how the position and direction of the first hole were decided on. He was told, "You might as well set up your drill here, and drill in, say, that direction". I believe that the first hole went through the richest ore ever found at Noranda. After the drill had gone through about 150 feet of solid sulphide ore running 17 per cent copper and 4 dwt. of gold per ton, it passed into barren rock, but the diamond-driller expressed the opinion (I wonder how he knew)) that the hole would come into ore again before long.

Os processos de redução direta utilizam-se de gases redutores (CO e H2) para redução do ferro e produção do DRI. A geração deste gás se dá através de reforma de metano que pode ser feita em um reformador, ou dentro do reator de redução com o DRI como catalizador. O último caso ocorre nos processos auto reformadores. A cinética da reforma de metano com H2O catalisada por DRI foi estudada em temperaturas entre 875°C e 1050°C. Os resultados mostraram que até conversão de metano de 0,50, a reforma é controlada por reação química catalítica conforme mecanismo proposto por Münster e Grabke(3,4). Acima desta conversão, o mecanismo não foi determinado. O uso de gás com potencial abaixo do limite para carburação (CH4/H2O < 1) resultou em DRI sem carbono. Com gás de potencial igual ou acima do limite, a carburação do DRI ocorreu e no caso do gás similar ao do processo industrial a carburação impediu a reação catalítica de reforma.

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To com­pound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores had fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Therefore a special treatment process is needed in order to allow for the gold ore to be leached downstream in a conven­tional cyanidation process for a high gold recovery. There are several options available for this oxidation process like treat­ment of the gold bearing ore in pressure oxidation, in a biooxi­dation or in a roasting plant depending on the reason for the refractoriness. If organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the prima­ry reasons for the refractoriness, whole ore roasting is a pre­ferred method for the treatment of this type of ore. Since dry ore is to feed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill is advantageous. For the dry grinding system, the moisture content and the ore char­acteristic is of importance. Those parameters decide the mode of the grinding system. For autoclave systems common wet grind­ing systems can be applied. This paper deals with technical aspects for dry grinding plants and gives an outlook on and pos­sibilities for new grinding systems.

The nature of fracture in unnotched tensile and notched tensile sheet and round specimens and V -notched and precracked Charpy-type sheet specimens of both wrought stress -relieved and re-crystallized molybdenum was investigated over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C. The sharp rise in fracture stress, for unnotched tensile samples, as the temperature is increased above the brittleness transition temperature (Tb), is found to be a result of an increase in flow stress due to plastic constraint and an increased strain rate which results from the onset of necking at Tb . Quasi-brittle fracture in notched tensile samples is found to occur when the tensile stress at the elastic-plastic interface, beneath the root of the notch, reaches a maximum critical value, which is independent of test temperature over the range from —78° to 25°C, but dependent on microstructure. In the temperature range between 150° and 300°C, unnotched tensile and notched tensile samples alike are found to fracture by a ductile fibrous tearing process which is discontinuous in nature, as a result of the competition between the processes of tearing, through continued plastic flow, and local work hardening. Results from the V-notched and fatigue-cracked Charpy-type impact tests demonstrate that crack initiation is the governing factor in the low-temperature (-78° to 25°C) fracture process for molybdenum. In recent years, there has been considerable interest, and a commensurate number of investigations, concerning the duc tile-to-brittle transition in refractory metals. There has not developed, however, a satisfactory explanation for the uniaxial tensile fracture-stress transition which accompanies the well-known ductility transition. This matter therefore warranted investigation. In a similar manner, the increased importance of notched tensile strength values in evaluating materials and in design criteria requires a better understanding of the factors which control the fracture behavior of notched tensile samples. In a previous investigation1 of the nature of initial yielding and fracture in notched sheet molybdenum at room temperature, it was suggested that plastic constraint was the controlling factor in governing the fracture behavior of notched samples. The final portion of this investigation was concerned with the fracture toughness of molybdenum. Of particular interest was the comparison of effective surface energies for fracture in V-notched samples with fatigue-cracked, Charpy-type samples in order to ascertain the relative importance of the initiation and propagation phases of the fracture process. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Sheet tensile, notched tensile, and V-notched Charpy specimens were prepared from 50-mil, stress-relieved molybdenum sheet.* Half of these specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1200°C and 7.5 x l0-5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a relatively uniform grain size of 0.30 mm diameter. Round notched and unnotched tensile specimens were prepared from warm-rolled and swaged 5/8-in.-diam bar.* These specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1350°C and 5 x lom5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Material analyses in ppm were: C N O H Sheet 290 10 4 1 Bar 50 30 30 2 The unnotched tensile sheet specimens had a 1/4-in. gage width and a 1-in. gage length. The unnotched tensile round specimens had a 9/32-in. gage diameter and a 1-1/4-in. gage length. The sheet and round notch tensile specimens are shown in Fig. 1. All of the notched tensile specimens tested were tandem-notched in order to study the location and mode of fracture initiation. The tandem-notched specimens were carefully machined so that the largest variation in notch depth on a single specimen was 0.001 in. Thus, when fracture occurs, the extent of plastic deformation that exists in the un-fractured notch section is that which exists just prior to fracture. All of the tandem-notched sheet specimens were electrolytic ally polished and chemically etched prior to testing. The V-notched Charpy-type specimens machined from the 50-mil sheet material had the standard dimensions of 2.125 in. long, 0.394 in. deep, and a 0.010-in. root radius. The unnotched tensile and notched tensile tests were conducted over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C, in a 10,000-lb Instron Universal Testing Machine, at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. INTRODUCTION This paper is for the mining manager, generally meaning mine superintendent, chief engineer, and others who have control over the mine operation responsible for feeding the insatiable beast called the mill or processing plant. The author is not from mine management but from the field of technical mine engineering consulting. This fact illustrates the authors gross inadequacy to comment on this subject. On the other hand, the consulting profession allows visits to many mine operations, worldwide, supplying many different commodities. The common complaints and misunderstandings that have been heard worldwide will be shared within the following few paragraphs. In order to discuss optimization, one must first define it. There certainly will be many papers in the following sessions that claim to optimize something, or other, based on a technical definition of cost, efficiency, throughput or some other quantifiable basis. DEFINE OPTIMIZATION Actual optimization of an operation is not as easily achieved as most of us in the technical world would like. Borrowing terminology from the technical world, the boundary conditions and the optimization function are usually not well defined. The problems in many cases do not lend themselves to quantification. Typical management procedures are to establish goals or strategies that set the approach or general boundary conditions to the overall plant. Three simple cases are listed below as possible corporate strategies to optimization of a mine-process plant complex. 1) Maximized discounted cash flow 2) Minimized long term cost of product 3) Maximized resource utilization This list seems simple when presented in the above context, uncluttered by constraints such as market position, capital availability, or environmental limitations. The National Coal Resource Assessment – 2000 project was a multi-year effort by the U.S. Geological Survey to identify, characterize, and assess the coal resources that will supply a major part of the Nation’s energy needs during the 21st century. The purpose of the USGS National Coal Resource Assessment (NCRA) was to (1) digitally assess selected coal beds and zones that will be the most important in the next few decades, (2) create publically available stratigraphic, geochemical, and geographic information system (GIS) databases to answer a variety of questions of importance to government, industry and public decision makers, and (3) provide interpretive geologic and geochemical information for the primary coal resources of the Nation. Five priority regions were assessed: the Appalachian Basin, Illinois Basin, Gulf Coast, Illinois Basin, and Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. The NCRA was a cooperative effort between the USGS and a number of State geological surveys in these coal-bearing regions. A study of coal resources on Federal lands was also conducted. Adequate energy supplies and the efficient use of those supplies are critical to the economic well being of a country. Affordable and reliable coal supplies are essential to the interests of our national and local policymakers. Policy makers require a range of information on the energy supply, as well as the economic and environmental issues associated with that energy source and its use. Formulation of an effective national energy policy and development of energy resources requires that we understand the geology, distribution, quality, and size of the national energy endowment.

Bentonites are clay materials composed principally of minerals in the montmorillonite group. Distinctive physical properties of the montmorillonite minerals are responsible for selected bentonite deposits having become the raw materials source of industrial clay products which are virtually essential to the maintenance of high production standards in the petroleum, foundry, taconite and other basic industries. These versatile materials have no suitable substitutes in either their major applications or in hundreds of speciality products, The economics of the bentonite mining industry follows closely the established pattern of other non-metallic raw materials. Aggressive competition, advanced technologies, progressive marketing techniques, substantial reserves, and vast unmeasured resources insure the continued supply of high quality bentonite to industry at bargain prices. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the geology and economics of bentonite deposits, summarize both major domestic mining districts and foreign deposits, and report significant results of research and development.

PREVIOUS investigations on the effect of neutron irradiation on the superconducting properties of bulk transition metals indicated that little or no change occurred in poly crystalline disordered materials, particularly if cold-worked prior to irradiation. Only the superconducting properties of ordered intermetal-lic A15 compounds were found to be sensitive to irradiation, and the observed reduction in Tc and increased magnetic hysteresis or critical current densities were attributed to the introduction of flux pinning vacancy clusters and disorder in the lattice. Since the former would also be expected to be present after irradiation in disordered alloys, the general conclusion was that the disordering effect of the irradiation was the primary reason for the changes observed. The present note reports some unusual effects of neutron irradiation on cold worked Nb(Cb)-Ti-V alloys. Specimens with nominal composition as given in Table I were prepared by repeated arc melting, taking the usual precautions, and homogenized at 1000°C for 24 hr prior to a reduction of 15:l by cold rolling. Samples of size 1 by 1 by 25 mm were sliced from the rolled strips. The sarmples chosen for irradiating were sealed in a cadmium tube (wall thickness 1 mm) prior to exposure in a fast neutron flux of 3.7 x 1019 neutrons per sq cm in the swimming pool reactor of Union Carbide Corporation&apos;s Sterling Forest Reactor. During irradiation the temperature of the samples was maintained below 70°C. The irradiated samples were stored at room temperature for approximately 1 year allowing the radiation levels to reach a safe handling value. Tc measurements were made employing a self-inductance coil technique. Jc data at 4.2"Kwere obtained using a four lead resistivity method. The latter measurements were made at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory by setting the perpendicularly applied field and increasing the direct current through the sample until a potential of about 10-6 v was detected. Tc values for the nonirradiated samples are listed in Table I together with the change in Tc after irradiation. A decrease in Tc of 0.25 or 0.3"K was measured for three of the four samples, the exception being the Nb-30 at. pct V-20 at. pct Ti alloy which showed a decrease of 0.5K. Jc vs applied field data are plotted in Fig. 1 for the Nb-20 at. pct V-30 at. pct Ti alloy. These curves are typical of the four alloys and surprisingly indicate that a degradation occurred in all the samples after irradiation. Hc2 values, obtained by extrapolation to zero current, are 8 to 15 pct lower than those measured for the nonirradiated specimens. The reasons for the degradation of Tc and jc ob-served in the alloys on exposure to neutron irradiation are not immediately apparent. The temperature at which the samples were maintained during bombardment (<70°C) and stored (20°C) make it highly unlikely that any significant change in the dislocation density of the materials through thermally activated migration and annihilation would occur. The explanation must lie in the type of damage produced by the bombardment. McEvoy et a1. reported no change in superconduct-

This paper builds on presentations made at the Conference of Metallurgists (COM) 2015, COM 2017 and Extraction 2018 and associated papers published in the respective conference proceedings. Based on the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper describes how metal mining can be compatible with sustainable development and how sustainability considerations have been applied in the primary copper industry, using several examples of sustainable mining practices from ASARCO LLC operations. Finally, the paper discusses how these considerations might be used in the future by discussing the need for developing a sustainable development strategy and how this strategy can be aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. INTRODUCTION The primary copper industry comprises: mining (also referred to as “extraction”); mineral processing (also referred to as “beneficiation, “milling” or “concentration,”) which includes leaching, solvent extraction (SX), crushing, grinding, froth and flotation operations; and metallurgical processing which includes smelting and converting; refining, which includes fire-refining or anode refining and electro-refining; and electrowinning (EW). There are two routes for producing refined copper: hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical. The hydrometallurgical route comprises mining (open-pit and underground), mineral processing (crushing and grinding — for heap leaching only; leaching and SX) and metallurgical processing (EW). The pyrometallurgical route involves mining, mineral processing (crushing, grinding and froth flotation) and metallurgical processing (smelting, fire refining and electro- refining). The primary copper industry is capital, water, resource and energy intensive with the potential for significant environmental impacts, if the environmental aspects are not properly managed. ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V (Grupo México) acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, SX-EW plants, a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper electrolytic refinery in Texas.

DR. BANOWSKY: Thank you very much. That was the shortest introduction that I have had lately, and I didn&apos;t have time to get my coat on. But I appreciated it, and I&apos;m delighted to be here with an industry with which 1 feel strong affinity. At the University of Oklahoma we have an energy history. We are a little more currently involved in oil and gas, and those of you who know the history of our state would be aware we have an early coal development back really before the turn of the century in the southeast part of our state what we call Little Dixie. How many of you have spent anytime in Oklahoma or are from the state of Oklahoma? I&apos;m not going to ask how many are from OSU or the University of Colorado. We did send you a football coach here from Oklahoma, and 1 see you have exchanged him. Several of you were only interested in the lobby in asking about our football team this year. 1 would like to go somewhere where we can talk about something besides football. I&apos;m just trying to build a University that our football team can be proud of. We&apos;re going to be strong again. 1 can assure you. We&apos;ve got the best football team money can buy. It&apos;s not quite as bad as the college president who called the coach in and said, "Coach we&apos;re in trouble, you&apos;re losing games and the alumni is very unhappy." "What can we do?" the president asked. The coach said, "Well the football team is flunking the admissions test. We can&apos;t get them in with the standard achievement and SAT tests." The president said, "What can we do?" The coach said, "Well the coaching staff has substituted for the American College Test the simple fill in the blank questionnaire." The president said, "Let&apos;s use it. We have got to get the team in." The first question was, Old MacDonald had a (-). And a couple of the big tackles were taking it and one of them said, "Hey, what did Old MacDonald have?" His friend said, "Stupid, Old MacDonald had a farm." "Well how do you spell farm?" He said, "Stupid, e i e i 0." Now the gentleman who met me at the registration line from Lakewood, Colorado, was asking me about one of our great big tackles; and he is doing well. We call him Doctor Death; he is also a wrestler and that gentleman said, "1 don&apos;t know how bright he is." 1 said, "He is bright enough for our academic tutoring that he is going to get through all right." So I&apos;m delighted to see you and be here with my very dear friend, Carl Terzian. Carl and 1 were in Los Angeles together for 10 or 12 years when I was president of Pepperdine University. He and I are exactly the same age. Born in 1935 and 1 a month or two later in 1936. Fewer children were born in that period than in any other period of time in this century. For those of you who remember anything about that period, you will know why no one was having babies during that period. But Carl called and said, "Bill do you know where Vail, Colorado is?" Well when you live in Oklahoma, you learn where Colorado is in a hurry. 1 not only know this beautiful area, but have made too much of an investment here at a place called Beaver Creek. The real estate is cheap over there. 1 play regularly in the Gerald Ford Invitational Golf Tournament here. Hope you will visit Beaver Creek. It&apos;s just 10- 12 miles to the west. The sight of the 1976 winter olympics until the people of Colorado voted them out. And now Vail Associates and I are good Oklahoma families. Bass family, Harry Bass of course, many of you know this story, who is chairman of the Board of Vail Associates, is making quite an investment in that year-round resort area. Muitos componentes de ferro fundido ficam expostos a altas temperaturas quando em serviço, podendo ocorrer a decomposição da perlita através da difusão do carbono da cementita para as lamelas de grafita, resultando em alteração microestrutural e degradação das propriedades mecânicas. A influência que a temperatura e o tempo de exposição têm sobre a microestrutura de um ferro fundido cinzento foi avaliado em amostras de quatro ferros fundidos de mesma base, com diferentes percentuais de cromo e molibdênio. Ensaios de banho de sal a uma temperatura de 500ºC foram realizados em corpos de prova com diâmetro de 10 mm. Os ensaios foram realizados com tempos de exposição a esta temperatura, após homogeneização térmica do material, de 0, 1, 2 e 4 horas. As análises metalográficas evidenciam a ocorrência da decomposição da perlita. Adicionalmente foram realizados ensaios de microdureza, a qual se mostrou sensível às alterações microestruturais geradas pela temperatura elevada. O ferro fundido com maior percentual de cromo e molibdênio apresentou melhor estabilidade da microestrutura para as condições ensaiadas.

INCE1 proposed that electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles was responsible for slime-coating. Del Giudice2 postulated the metathetic formation of a cementing compound. Wark3 suggested that prevention of slime-coating was related to peptization of the slime. [ ] In the experiments of Table I the technique employed was essentially that of del Giudice, with the difference that the particle was examined under a film of water rather than dry.4 In general, the polished particle was agitated for 2 min. in a pulp consisting of 12.5 grams of the slime (-200 mesh) and 50 c.c. of distilled water, washed in three baths of distilled water, and examined at 220 diameters with the Leitz Ultropak. Observations of Brownian movement were made at 850 diameters with dark-field illumination. Several of these experiments do not jibe with the metathesis theory. According to published solubilities,5,6 the lead salts of the anions in experiments [c] through g are more insoluble than lead carbonate, therefore should prevent the formation of lead carbonate on the galena surface. In experiment [i] the calcium oxalate, which presumably was on the calcite surfaces, should have permitted the formation of a lead carbonate cement by virtue of its greater solubility. Experiments [j] through m show that the addition of lime accelerates the deposition of quartz onto a galena surface. The writer is unable to postulate a satisfactory cementing compound, according to the metathesis theory, to explain this effect. An intensive investigation into modern roof support technology, including hy draulic and control systems, has been carried out against the perspective of global development and support behaviour on longwall faces across the Indian sub-continent. The wide ranging study examined various types and designs of modern supports used in seams of varying thickness and inclination where caving and stowing were practised. Consideration has been given to structural analysis, support resistance, the various forces acting over and on the powered supports and to support compatibility. The examination of the phy sical parameters has been allied to field experience and, together, have led to the formulation of standard designs for both the powered support structure and structural systems. A realistic mathematical model has been formulated for calculating the capacity of roof support requirements resulting from the actual behaviour of the immediate roof stratum. As a result of the work, it should be possible to readily select the most appropriate type of support sy stem for the conditions and longwall mining method that is to be employed.

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.
