A recent increase in energy demand has resulted in the rapid growth of coal consumption in the People?s Republic of China (PRC), which is the largest coal producer and consumer in the world. Reportedly, the safety issues in Chinese coal mines have been improving, but the number of fatalities and serious injuries continues to be alarmingly high. The number of fatalities from catastrophic accidents have prompted researchers to review the Chinese mine safety situation and to look for potential solutions. Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. (MM&A), along with various collaborators, has investigated these issues as part of its work on various projects in the PRC and has discussed the concerns with relevant Chinese officials. Preliminary investigations by MM&A of coal mine accidents during 2001?2006 in the PRC indicate that 65%-78% of the total fatalities were the result of gas explosions and roof falls in underground mines. Even though the drainage of methane has been practiced for decades, current practices do not always produce satisfactory results due to technical constraints and equipment limitations. Based on prior experience of in-seam degasification at the Daning Coal Mine located in Shanxi province, MM&A believes that in-seam directional drilling technology can be a viable solution to degas the low-permeability Chinese coal deposits. This paper 1) reviews current Chinese coal mine safety conditions, 2) analyzes the advantages/disadvantages of current degasification practices in China, and 3) presents the pre-mining degasification practices for the longwall panel at the Daning Coal Mine.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss continues to be one of the most pervasive health problems in the mining industry, despite over 25 years of regulation. One of the loudest pieces of equipment used in underground mining is the continuous mining machine. Noise sample data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration indicate that 42% of noise overexposures between 2000 and 2005 involved continuous mining machine operators. Previously conducted field and laboratory tests have determined that the continuous mining machine conveyor system is a dominant noise source. Loud impacts occur as the conveyor chain flight bars, used to move the mined aggregate, traverse their path from the top to the underside of the conveyor deck. Various noise control treatments have been applied to abate noise caused by the conveyor system. A durable polyurethane coating has been developed for the conveyor flight bars, resulting in a time-weighted average reduction of 3 dB(A) for an eight-hour work shift. In an attempt to further reduce continuous mining machine operator overexposures, a similar urethane coating has been applied to the tail roller component of the conveyor system. Laboratory results showed a 2 dB(A) reduction in sound power levels, but the component failed during underground durability testing. An outer steel sleeve has been added to the urethane coating of the tail roller to enhance wear resistance during mining. The urethane jacketed tail roller is the latest effort, combined with previous noise treatments, to bring the continuous mining machine into compliance with federal noise regulations.

Water auditing and water conservation measures are fast becoming the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. Therefore, this paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a goldmining environment and to contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research will assist with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and ongoing probabilistic modelling for Newmont Mining Corporation, its wholly owned gold mines, and its joint venture operation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Kalgold or KCGM are the managers of a joint venture project between Barrick Australia (50 per cent) and Newmont Mining Corporation (50 per cent) at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (WA). Boddington Gold Mine (BGM), Western Australia, will commence operations this year and manage the new goldmine expansion project. BGM is 100 per cent Newmont owned and will operate to continue mining gold and copper from the existing (BGM) site that was decommissioned in 2001.

Concepts and equations have been developed to quantitatively determine the stability of a rock bolted coal mine roof as a structural (beam-arch) member consisting of reinforced rock units. The equations take into account: rock bolt tension, length, spacing, and orientation; size of opening, strength and physical properties of the rock; and loads from distressed rock, and were critically reviewed using sensitivity analyses and the results available from relevant previous analytical and physical model investigations. It is concluded that they can essentially be validated by using small scale physical models and the full size mine entry model at the USBM Spokane Research Center. However, a comprehensive research program, including analytical and laboratory investigations and field trials in typical mines, will be required to define and validate criteria and standards for using the equations as a basis for a rational design code for rock reinforcement installations to replace the semi-empirical rules now being used. For example, these studies have shown that the practice of installing vertical roof bolts with a uniform spacing equal to the bolt length is inherently unsafe and that the spacing should be reduced near the walls to prevent shear failure of the roof strata. The development of such a rational design code would provide enhanced safety in coal mining operations and warrants a high priority in the Bureau's ground control research program.

"Giant Yellowknife Mines Limited (Giant) has been producing gold since 1948. Located at Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, see Figure 1, the mine processes approximately 1,200 short tons per day of 0.23 ounce gold per ton of ore.The majority of the gold in the ore is sub-microscopic and associated within the mineral arsenopyrite. This association complicates the extraction method since straight cyanidation will only recover 30% of the gold. The operations at Giant involve four essential steps, with an overall recovery of 87%. The steps shown in Figure 2 are crushing and grinding, flotation, roasting and cyanidation. These processes result in a number of effluent waste streams characterized in Table 1. These streams are combined and sent to a tailings storage pond for subsequent treatment prior to discharge to the environment.Giant is located just north of the 62nd parallel where winter temperatures drop to -40°C for extended periods. This entails storing effluent in dams over the seven month winter period for treatment during the relatively short summer season.The treatment method currently employed at Giant is an ""alkaline chlorination-arsenic precipitation-flocculation"" process. The pond water is subjected to three phases of treatment prior to being discharged to the environment as shown in Figure 3."

"This paper describes the design of an SABC grinding circuit using CEET technology applied to grindability data produced from testing 100 samples and distributed across the blocks of a mine plan using a geostatistical approach. The data distribution required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the 130 million ton Ruby Creek orebody together with a mine plan of about 11000 blocks to be mined during the proposed 18 year life of the mine. The mill design was then made with consideration for the estimated hardness of each block in terms of both SAG and Ball milling with allowance for annual periods when the ore is harder to grind. Operating specifications were selected to achieve an optimum of capital and operating costs through use of the CEET program. The geostatistics assigned the statistical error that arises from having a limited amount of sample testing data to the hardness estimate of each block of ore in the mine plan. The final design could then include a quantification of risk and determination of safety factors based on the accuracy of block hardness estimates and CEET model fitting.INTRODUCTIONThe traditional approach to plant design involves the extensive testing of a single large composite sample or a small number of composite samples that are reputed to represent the ore body. It is accepted that the tests used can accurately measure in the laboratory the grindability of the sample by a process representing that to be used in the plant. The size of equipment required to achieve a specified throughput and product size is then calculated from one of a variety of models that have been developed by metallurgists over years of trial and error. Since these tests and models are tried and tested, they are accepted as reasonably precise; however during the operation of the resulting plant the design is sometimes found to be inadequate. It is then suspected that the flaw in the design process lies in the samples not being sufficiently representative of the ore body, since using only a single or small number of composite samples does not recognize the variability of the hardness of the ore, nor does it allow for the lack of precision in the hardness value used in the design.This paper outlines a design procedure suited to an orebody that is described by a geostatistical analysis of a reasonably large number of small samples of drill core. The analysis required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the orebody, together with a mine plan of the blocks to be mined during the proposed life of the mine. The mill design was then made using the estimated hardness of each individual block with an allowance for annual fluctuations in the grindability of the ore. The geostatistical analysis assigned a statistical error to the hardness estimates of blocks and of each production year such that the final design included risk estimates and safety factors based on the possible errors that arise from having a limited amount of sample data (Kosick et al. 2002)."

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. "SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."

Most empirical and numerical approaches to design in rock mechanics incorporate rock mass classification. Numerical design methods generally use classification values to calculate input parameters for stress-based failure criteria. Empirical methods use classification to allow comparisons between similar rock mass conditions, generally based on a graphical design technique that differentiates stable and failed opening geometries. Classification systems are the best tool available for assessing rock mass properties; however, there are problems with classification systems that should be high-lighted. Rock mass performance can only be realistically estimated by coupling a unique description of the rock mass with known loading conditions. Current classification systems cannot provide a unique classification value. The weightings applied to quantify rock mass properties for classification can result in significantly different rock masses having the same classification values. These weightings have been proven effective for tunnel design and support, but classification systems are now used for many more applications. Rock classification systems evolved from a quick and easy field tool for estimating tunnel stability and support requirements. The need for a rapid field tool means that rock mass classification is relatively insensitive to improved methods of measuring rock mass properties. Problems with classification systems and their application are highlighted in this paper. These problems must be recognized and documented before improvements can be made. An understanding of the evolution of classification systems and their application for both numerical and empirical design approaches is invaluable in highlighting current shortcomings.

The Australian underground coal mining industry has made extensive use of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) classification system for a diverse range of purposes in recent years. These include mining method selection, and coal pillar and roof support design. This paper outlines a series of case histories, from large-scale feasibility studies to local support design investigations, that collectively illustrate the broad applicability, advantages, and usefulness of the methodology, as well as some of the current limitations. The key role of the CMRR in an overall hazard definition methodology is demonstrated for a major Australian project, and some ideas with regard to the future application of the CMRR, in the context of geotechnical risk management within a progressive, highly productive extractive industry, are put forward.

The development and commercialization of new generation high tension electrostatic separators has provided a basis for simplifying mineral separation plant circuitry. The inclusion of new design features including insulated plate electrodes that have resulted insignificantly improved separation efficiencies in electrostatic separators are described. The increase in separation efficiency has resulted in a reduction in the number of treatment stages required to produce final high grade mineral products. Comparative performance data on different feed types are presented. A comparison between mineral separation plant flowsheets using both conventional and new generation high tension electrostatic separation technology is presented. A 55% reduction in the number of installed electrostatic separators and a 36% reduction in plant area was achieved through the use of this new electrostatic separation technology.

High-Mg-content concentrates are usually treated in Jinchuan flash smelting Furnace. Because the viscosities of high-Mg-content slag is very high, the operation of flash smelting becomes very difficult. To solve this problem, the viscosities of the semi-synthesized FeO-MgO-Si02 slag of different compositions were measured. The results showed that when in the slag the weight percentage of MgO [m(Mgo)] is 6-10%, the ratio of the weight percentage of iron to that of Si02, m(Fe)/m(SiO2) is 1.1-1.4 and the temperatures are within 1473?1773K, the slag viscosities increased with the increase of m(Mgo) and m(Fe)/m(sio,). When m(Mgo)<6%, the smelting temperature should be controlled at I 300°C in order to to keep the smooth operation. When m(Mgo» 10%, the temperature should be kept above 1633K. When the content of MgO is higher, a lower viscosity slag ean be produced by decreasing the ratio of m(Fe)/m(sio,). The appropriate ratio of m(Fe)/m(sio,) for Jinchuan flash smelting furnace is about 1.2.

Some interesting and, to American eyes, rather unusual processes for refining impure aluminum derived from scraps were found by American and British investigators who went into Germany in 1945 for the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What was found was recorded in a series of reports (see page ), many of which have been released for general reading. This paper gathers under one title and summarizes the German work in refining light metal scrap. Reference must be made to the original reports for greater detail. Basically, the occasion and stimulus for the German developments in treating light metal scrap were hard necessity. Germany needed the metal for a rapacious war industry. Adequate supplies of new aluminum from reduction works were not assured. Great quantities of airplane and other light metal war scraps were forecast. It was evident that the scrap metal would have to be reabsorbed by the producing industry and would have to be kept of good quality. The normal current production of manufacturing scrap was being and could be consumed as generated. It offered no technical problem. The mixed scraps, especially those arising from crashed and decommissioned airplanes, however, presented problems of another kind. Airplane Scrap The recovery of usable aluminum alloy from the mixed assemblies that made up the piles of airplane scrap was attacked in different ways by different groups and with differing degrees of success. Three procedures actually were used on a commercial scale, one was in pilot-plant stage and another had come to a halt in the laboratory a year before Germany collapsed. Four of these five processes actually involved "refining"; that is, some measure of purification of the metal after melting. Sorting and Separation on a Sloping Hearth The simplest procedure for utilizing airplane scrap involved no refining in the strict sense of the word. This was the practice adopted by two representative plants visited by the author, the Leipziger Leichtmetalle Werke, Rackwitz, Saxony, and the Vereinigte Leichtmetalle Werke, Hanover. These firms did essentially the same thing that was done in England but not with equal success, to judge by their shorter experience, the smaller tonnage handled and by the number and quality of alloys produced. The two German firms named rough-sorted scraps by their easily recognizable alloys, essentially by part and shape. They used hand labor to chop and hack and tear apart. The banded nature of the quartz veins which form the Empire lode at the Golden Cross mine, is perhaps their most striking feature. Petrographic studies show that significant differences occur between the bands in terms of textures, quartz grain size, calcite, adularia and kaolinite content, and the form, concentration and mineralogy of sulfide phases. &nbsp; The d18Oquartz values of individual bands within the vein material range from 7.3-10.9ë. Calculations show that the d18Oquartz values can be adequately explained by temporal variations in the system temperature, boiling and/or variations in the systems fluid/rock ratios.

Head-of-hollow fills or valley fills have gained national attention due to increasing environmental concerns, particularly with regards to headwater stream loss. Researchers at the University of Kentucky in conjunction with outside scientists and consultants in the fields of stream restoration, wetland restoration, and mined land reclamation have developed new design methodologies for creating a headwater stream system for a head-of-hollow fill in eastern Kentucky. The design was largely built on the Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA), which encourages a non-compacted spoil medium to promote tree growth, in an effort to address concerns related to water quantity and quality as well as habitat development. The major components of the design included 1) modifications to the crown geometry, 2) compaction of the crown to control infiltration, 3) utilization of natural channel design techniques, 4) use of the FRA to promote tree growth, 5) creation of ephemeral channels and vernal ponds, and 6) implementation of a novel bioreactor-wetland treatment system to improve water quality.

Due to Important settlements inducing major structural damages, the western part of the Grand Littoral shopping centre has been closed in 1997. The present paper describes the project of underpinning including not only micropiles under the structure of the building but also a reinforcement of the soil located between the shopping centre and the edge of the embankment surrounding the western part of the shopping centre. The aim of this reinforcement is to reduce existing horizontal movements to allowable values.

Low-rank/oxidized coals respond poorly to oil agglomeration. Emulsification of kerosene in the presence of surfactants dramatically reduces the size of the kerosene droplets. While this dramatically reduces the amount of oil that is required for efficient agglomeration (down to 0.25-0.5%), more importantly, the surfactants entirely change the electrokinetic properties of the oil droplets and thus the interaction between oil droplets and coal particles. Consequently, kerosene cationic emulsions can efficiently agglomerate oxidized coal particles. The agglomerates obtained in such a process can still be recovered by screening. Surfactants can affect fine coal filtration very profoundly when used to emulsify the oil which is utilized to agglomerate coal prior to its filtration. This sequence is much more logical than the use of flocculants - highly hydrophilic polymers - as filtration additives to aid dewatering of flotation concentrates. Although such polymers flocculate coal particles, they also render coal surfaces hydrophilic and make reduction of the cake moisture content difficult.
