In today?s emerging economy, pooling resources is a growing trend to reduce overall system costs. Two important resources of every maintenance department are repair shops and spare parts. In this work, we consider a system consisting of mine drills at multiple areas in a mine. In each area, a number of identical drills are operational. When a failure occurs, the defective component should be repaired in a designated repair shop. The failed component can be replaced immediately if a spare part is available. Otherwise, the drill is down until a component is repaired and put back into service. In this paper, the effect of pooling resources is examined, and the conditions under which it is beneficial to pool the resources are investigated. In addition, determining the optimal number of stand-by units, equipment or spare parts, in each case is of interest.

The U.S, Bureau of Mines is conducting a four-year (1987-1990) study to assess the mineral resources and mineral development potential of the Valdez Creek Mining District in southcentral Alaska. This study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report summarizes the Bureau's site specific evaluations of two areas (Tyone and Peters Creek) of the district that were investigated to determine the bedrock sources of gold and PCM in the alluvial gravel of both areas. In the Tyone Creek area, grains of gold (up to 0.0212 oz/yd3) and platinum group minerals (PCM) were recovered from alluvium and weathered conglomerate of the Jurassic Naknek Formation and Tertiary age using placer sampling techniques, Platinum and palladium were detected in the heavy mineral concentrates recovered from placer sampling the alluvium, and Naknek Formation and Tertiary conglomerates. In the Peters Creek area, grains of gold (up to 0.014 oz/yd3) were recovered from the alluvium and Tertiary Sterling Formation conglomerate. The Bureau's evaluations indicated that drainage basins containing conglomerate are the most favorable targets for placer gold and PGM exploration; and Tertiary conglomerate represents a high volume, low grade gold resource.

Through the development of innovative in-line mineral quantification sensors, the possibility has arisen to apply modern control theory to implement automatic process control for electrostatic high tension (“HT”) roll separators. A pilot-scale set-up was constructed to enable continuous tests to be carried out. A typical dry mill feed was continuously pre-heated and separated with a modern lab scale HT roll machine. The mineralogy as well as mass-flow of the non-conductor stream was quantified in-line, and the combined streams were re-circulated in an endless loop by a combination of vibration feeders and a bucket elevator. A fractional factorial experiment was executed to determine the most significant control parameters of the HT roll separator. Then a multi-input, multi-output dynamic model of the HT electrostatic separator was extracted by the application of standard system identification techniques for automatic control. The most important control variable to ensure a stable product grade could be identified. This allowed a robust single-input, single-output controller to be implemented. The process variable and set-point was mineral grade and the control variable was electrode voltage. Roll speed was manually adjusted while the mineral grade was kept on set-point by the control system. The roll speed, where maximum mass flow and therefore maximum yield was produced on-grade, could therefore be rapidly determined. Atmosphere humidity and ore temperature served as disturbances. Some other adjustable parameters were kept constant during the experiments, namely feed mineralogy, splitter settings and feed rate. Delivery of maximum yield, with a controlled grade, can improve production while reducing the burden of complex manual tuning. Manual tuning previously involved coping with multiple parameters with uncertain cross coupling influences on the end result. Even the end result was typically only known after completion of mineral assays. Automatic grade stabilisation and yield optimisation for a HT roll separator bank requires in-line measurement of mineralogy and mass flow, as well as the implementation of a robust process control system.

Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

The present study investigates the influence of ferrous iron (as FeSO4) and ferric iron (as Fe2 (SO4)3), and pyrite (FeS2) on the ability of bacterial leaching of a high-grade sulfide Zn–Pb ore. In this regard, shake flask experiments were carried out at 5% (w/v) pulp density of the ore sample (having 40.7% Zn and 12.4% Pb initial metal content) using a consortium of mesophilic iron and sulfur-oxidizing acidophiles. A concentration of 0.04 mol/L of ferric iron in the leaching media was found to be optimum for zinc extraction without affecting growth of the microorganisms. Under this concentration, the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 57%, 0.2%, 0.03%, and 9.9% in 25 days. Using ferrous iron in the media, 0.16 mol/L of Fe2+ was found to be the optimum concentration for efficient bacterial growth and metal dissolution (54.6% Zn, 0.08% Pb, 0.03% Cd, and 10.2% As) from the sample in 25 days. On the other hand, using pyrite as the source of energy for bacterial growth, an initial 12-day lag period was observed when compared to the effect of ferrous iron in the media. Under the optimum concentration (test with 0.24 mol/L iron in the form of pyrite), the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 39.8%, 0.1%, 0.03%, and 10% in 25 days. The surface chemistry analysis indicated formation of a sulfur layer over the particle surface that hindered reagent diffusion and affected metal recovery through bioleaching.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE use of zinc dust for precipitating the precious metals from cyanide solutions is well established now in many places, and has many advantages over the shavings method of precipitation. Although much work has been clone on methods of testing zinc dust, as yet no absolutely positive test has been devised to determine the value of the material. Certain facts are known, but often it happens that results on a working scale are not as expected from the laboratory tests. The purpose of this paper is to record some observations made while testing. a large variety of zinc-dust samples in the laboratory. W. J. Sharwood1 has described standard analytical methods, which have been followed, with the changes noted. The regular determinations include zinc oxide, by solution in ammonia and ammonium chloride, lead, and precipitating efficiency. In some cases cadmium was determined by a method similar to that described by J. E. Clennell.2 I will discuss the precipitating-efficiency test in detail. The procedure is as follows: "A solution of potassium silver cyanide is prepared by dissolving 10 grams of silver cyanide (AgCN) and 5 grams of `99 0' potassium cyanide in a little water and diluting up to 1000 cc. It is then adjusted by addition of a little more KCN or AgCN until the solution indicates from 0.12% to 0.15% free KCN by titration with standard silver nitrate. The titration is best made by using a 10-cc. or 20-cc. sample, adding 1 cc. of 2 % potassium iodide, and a slight excess of ammonia, as the end point is then sharper. Or 15 grains of pure crystallized KAg(CN)2 may he dissolved in a liter of water and 1.5 grams KCN added. "Weigh out 0.5 grain zinc dust into a 300-cc. beaker. Add a few cubic centimeters of water and stir until, zinc is well mixed, then pour in 250 cc. of the prepared solution, stirring vigorously. See that all lumps are broken up, and continue stirring for fully five minutes. Stir occasionally (at least every 10 minutes) until the end of two hours from the addition of the solution. Then filter upon an 11-cm. filter, wash precipitate thoroughly, sprinkle with test lead, wrap it carefully in the paper, plaice in a scorifier with about 20 grams test lead, burn paper cautiously in muffle, scorify five minutes, cupel at low temperature and weigh silver. Milligrams silver obtained from 0.5 gram zinc X 0.0606 = percentage precipitating efficiency."'

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10 ? 15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

Bethlehem, Pa.-I do not see in the paper a description of the Mabuki hearth as used for ore smelting. I noticed it described for concentrating matte, but I believe the older Japanese process was to use it for-smelting directly, by a pyritic smelting and Bessemerizing all in one operation, in the same simple hearth apparatus. There is a monograph published in German, on Copper-Ore Smelting in the Mabuki Hearth. At Ashio the practice of injecting bituminous coal at the, tuyères is noteworthy. It is very interesting to see two men load little cartridges on the end. of an iron rod with bituminous coal, and push them into the furnace tuyères, and with a piston inject 2 or 3 lb.. of bituminous

A study has been undertaken on two 1.12 m diameter industrial booster fans operating under different blade settings powered by a 1200 rpm motor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The fans total pressure varies up to 1kPa forcingup to 25 m3/s through the workings. A pressure-quantity survey has been conducted inby and outby the booster fans with different blade settings. The study uses a variable speed drive (VFD) to determine the effect of rotational frequency on the system. The pressure drop across the bulkheads has been monitored during the experiments. The fans were operated with various blade settings to determine the optimal scenario that maintains the maximum airflow quantity and the lowest power demand at a particular ventilation station. Five scenarios were conducted with different blade setting and mostly with two different speeds. The experimental results show that alteration of fans? speeds by use of a VFD unit can reduce power consumption while maintaining airflow requirements. With the flow rate forced through the mine by the surface fan the blade settings 4 and 5 were determined as possible alternative for the mine ventilation system. In scenario 4, the airflow at the particular ventilation station for a number of speeds is over 20m3/s. The power consumption at 1080 rpm was measured to be 20.1 kW compared to 25.5 kW at 1200 rpm. The operating cost would be significantly less at lower speeds. Scenario 5 is the alternative making use of both booster fans and the main fan in series that meets the minimum airflow requirement at the particular ventilation station along with minimum power consumption. Reducing both booster fans speeds to 1054 rpm results in power consumption of both together dropping to 11.8 kW. Therefore blade setting 5 using two booster fans was determined to be the optimal setting. Separately it was determined that the combination with use of only one booster fan, the West booster fan, running in series with the main fan is the overall optimal scenario. The power consumption of the West booster fan was calculated to be 8.8 kW at 860 rpm with the minimum airflow requirement being met. Computational fluid dynamics is used for analyzing three dimensional flow structures in time domain and calculating the corresponding unsteady pressure fluctuations. The sliding and dynamic mesh techniques were used to study the unsteady flow interaction arising due to the rotation of the fan blades. The numerical predictions of the variables in the form of velocity vectors and contour plots detailing the flow characteristics are then analyzed according to the known physical situation and existing experimental data.

In the past 15 years a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical work has been done concerning the onset of convection in liquids as a result of interm1 density gradients. This work, which has been doue in many different fields, is reviewed here and extended slightly to give a rrlore quantitative understanding to the probletrz of conzection in liquid metal dlffusion experinletzts. In liquid metal systems the capillary reservoir technique is currently used, almost exclusively, to measure diffusion coefficients. In this technique it is necessary that the liquid be stagnant in order to avoid mixing by means of convection currents. Convective mixing may result from: 1) convection produced as a result of the initial immersion of the capillary; 2) convection produced in the region of the capillary mouth as the result of the stirring frequency used to avoid solute buildup in the reservoir near the capillary mouth; 3) convection produced during solidification as a result of the volume change; and 4) convection produced as a result of local density differences within the liquid in the capillary. The first three types of convection have been discussed elsewhere1-a and are only mentioned for completeness here. This work is concerned only with the fourth type of convection. Local density differences will arise within the liquid as a result of either a temperature gradient or a concentration gradient. It is usually, but not always, recognized by those employing the capillary reservoir technique that the top of the capillary should be kept slightly hotter than the bottom and that the light element should be made to migrate downward in order to avoid convection. In the past 15 years a considerable amount of work, both theoretical and experimental, has been done in a number of different fields which bear on this problem. This work is reviewed here and extended slightly in an effort to give a more quantitative understanding of the convective motion produced in vertical capillaries by local density differences. The Stokes-Navier equations for an incompressible fluid of constant viscosity in a gravitational field may be written as: %L + (v?)v = - ?£ + Wv - g£ [1] where F is the velocity, t the time, P the pressure, p the density, v the kinematic viscosity, g the gravitational acceleration, and k a unit vector in the vertical direction. A successful diffusion experiment requires the liquid to be motionless, and under this condition Eq. [I] becomes: where a is the thermal expansion coefficient [a =-(l/po)(dp/d)], a' is a solute expansion coefficient [a' = -(l/po)(dp/d)], and the solute is taken as that component which makes a' a positive number. Combining with Eq. [3] the following restriction is obtained: Since there is no fixed relation between VT and VC in a binary diffusion experiment, Eq. [5] shows that the condition of fluid motionlessness requires both the temperature gradient and the concentration gradient to be vertically directed. Given this condition of a density gradient in the vertical direction only, it is obvious that, as this vertical density gradient increases from negative to positive values, the motionless liquid will eventually become unstable and convective movement will begin. The classical treatment of this type of instability problem was given by aleih' in 1916 for the case of a thin fluid film of infinite horizontal extent; and a very comprehensive text has recently been written on the subject by handrasekhar.' It is found that convective motion does not begin until a dimensionless number involving the density gradient exceeds a certain critical value. This dimensionless number is generally referred to as the Rayleigh number, R, and it is equal to the product of the Prandtl and Grashof numbers. For the sake of clarity a distinction will be made between two types of free convection produced by internal density gradients. In the first case a density gradient is present in the vertical direction only, and, since the convection begins only after a critical gradient is attained, this case will be called threshold convection. In the second case a horizontal density gradient is present and in this case a finite convection velocity is produced by a finite density gradient so that it will be termed thresholdless convection. Some experimentalists have performed diffusion experiments using capillaries which were placed in a horizontal or inclined position in order to avoid convection. These positions do put the small capillary dimension in the vertical direction and, consequently, they would be less prone to threshold convection than the vertical position. The Culampajß auriferous district is located in the northern sector of the eastern edge of the homonymous hill, Catamarca Province, Argentina. Tajo Largo mine is situated in the southern flank of Las Minas gulch at an approximate height of 3.600 m above sea level. In the studied area main outcrops are orthogneiss rocks of Chango Real Formation. The ore mineral is native gold with a lesser amount of pyrite, chalcopyrite, haematite, limonite, malachite, azurite and covellite. These ore mineral assemblages are disseminated in quartz veins filling tension fractures in the host orthogneiss.Several types of inclusions have been recognised, including three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions, polyphase inclusions with H2O-CO2 and one or more solid phases, and two phase aqueous inclusions. In the three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions the Tmclath is about 1¦C and the CO2 liquid-vapour homogenisation occurs at 26 - 28¦C, to liquid phase. The homogenisation temperature of H2O-CO2 occurs at 365 - 380¦C in the aqueous phase. This set of data defined a solution with a salinity of 14, 4 wt per cent NaCl equivalent and a density of 0.84 g/cm3. In the two phase aqueous inclusions the melting temperature (Tm) of -5.4¦C and the eutectic point (Te) in -38¦C indicates a salinity of about 7.5 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, with the probable presence of Ca2+. Density of fluid is about 0.83 g/cm3. Homogenisation temperature ranges between 260¦ and 280¦C. The pressure, temperature and salinity of fluids in the polyphase inclusions suggest an early fluid of high density and high salinity. The three-phase fluid inclusions may be the result of an unmixing-phase separation of post magmatic hydrothermal fluid due to pressure decrease along fractures. It is suggested that the deposit was formed during the late magmatic hydrothermal stage genetically linked to granitic rocks and can be comparable with the intrusion-related gold system of Baker (2003).

A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the mountains of Taiwan are both young transpressive orogens characterised by rapid uplift and exhumation, high heat flow and vigorous surface processes. Comparing and contrasting the two provides an ideal framework through which to explore the structural and lithological controls on fluid and gold mobility during collisional deformation. Both have two fluid flow systems centred about their drainage divide with shallow topographically-driven meteoric water above a deeper flow system dominated by mineralising rock-exchanged fluids. Despite similar tectonic settings, the distribution of heat flow, hot springs and veins in the two orogens are different. Taiwan has higher heat flow, distributed hot springs and localised veining whereas the Southern Alps have a narrow heat flow anomaly, localised warm springs and widespread veining. We use three-dimensional numerical models to evaluate key parameters that affect fluid flow and gold mineralisation. Models show that differences in crustal strength and thickness affect the locus, scale and rate of crustal fluid flow and hence influence gold deposition at a variety of scales. We explore how surface topography can lead to localised changes in the stress state, facilitating the switching of principal stresses and hence vein orientations.CITATION:Upton, P and Craw, D, 2015. The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. The current status of the US lead and zinc industries was reviewed by J. G. McCullough, president of Amax Lead and Zinc Inc. He reported that in the US, lead and zinc are separate industries because of the nature of mineralization. The large Mississippi-type zinc deposits are practically lead-free, and while the new lead belt in Missouri has some zinc content, it does not have the same favorable economic impact as in the complex massive sulfide ore bodies being developed elsewhere.

The Coronation Hill gold-platinum-palladium prospect is located in the valley of the South Alligator River (latitude 13'35'S, longitude 132'36'E), about 80 kilometres east of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory. Coronation Hill was one of thirteen sites in the South Alligator Valley at which uranium was mined between 1955 and 1964 after initial discovery by the Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1953. Most of the mines were operated by United Uranium No Liability. The Sleisbeck mine 25 kilometres south of Coronation Hill was operated by North Australian Uranium Corporation and the group of mines at Rockhole about 20 kilometres to the north-west of Coronation Hill was operated by South Alligator Uranium No Liability. The uranium mine at Coronation Hill produced about 26000 tonnes of ore averaging 2.6 kg/t U308 with an estimated average gold grade of 10.4 g/ gold. Gold was commonly associated with the uranium mineralisation and was recovered at the gravity treatment plant at El Sherana. Gold was also recovered in 1986 by Pacific Gold Mines Limited by treating the tailings from the Moline and Rockhole uranium leach plants at a CIP plant at Moline. With the completion of uranium contracts in 1964 mining in the South Alligator Valley ceased. Exploration for uranium continued in the area during the 1960s and 1970s with no success. The Coronation Hill Joint Venture (BHP Gold Mines Limited 45 per cent, Pioneer Minerals (Gold) Pry Ltd 45 per cent, Notgold Limited 10 per cent)carried out the first exploration specifically targetted at gold in 1984 with the drilling of five vertical drill holes which indicated high potential for a substantial gold resource at Coronation Hill with no associated uranium. The Joint Venture has sub- sequently drilled about 25000 metres of diamond drill holes at Coronation Hill alone. Analytical results from 1985 drilling established that platinum and palladium were associated with gold. An indicated resource of 3.49Mt at 5.12g/t Au, 0.21g/t Pt and 0.56g/t Pd has been calculated using a lg/t Au cut off.

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins sustained mining for over a century. They include the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of more than 3,660-m (12,000-ft) and vertical continuity in excess of 1,370-m (4,500-ft) with mining widths from 1.5- to 15-m (5- to 50-ft). These characteristics are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district. It eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970s. Openpit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines.
