Narrow vein underground stope design engineers in Australia have expressed significant interest in the requirements and methodology for developing site-specific stability charts. This is largely due to a concern that existing stope stability charts inadequately take into account factors influencing narrow vein stope stability, such as the effect of backfill abutments and the effect of in stope pillars. This paper presents conclusions from a comprehensive statistical examination of case history requirements for a site specific stability chart and critiques literature arguments for site-specific charts. A new statistical analysis technique and a large comprehensive stability database enabled the authors to quantify case history requirements and any site-specific effects the model exhibits. The analyses indicated that a reliable stable-failure boundary requires at least 150 case histories, of which a minimum of 10 percent should be unstable stope surfaces. Marginal site-specific effects were observed for the operating conditions captured within the database. The authors conclude that the apparent site-specific effects noted in previous literature are attributable to operating conditions inadequately represented in the database. Such operating conditions could induce erroneous stability predictions at any site, and are therefore not truly site-specific. Following from these conclusions, a strategy for taking into account operating conditions particularly relevant to narrow vein mining has been proposed. In particular, the development of a chart that accounts for the effect of backfill abutments on stope stability. Backfill abutment effects are particularly relevant to mechanised narrow vein mining methods such as modified Avoca. Collaboration from at least five sites is required to obtain access to relevant data and underground drives for geotechnical mapping. Preliminary estimations indicate that approximately three months fieldwork is required to meet case history requirements. CMS data in conjunction with 3-dimensional design software will be used to calculate equivalent linear overbreak/slough (ELOS). In contrast to stable, failure, major failure and caving categorical variables, ELOS is an objective and continuous stability variable and is therefore, more conducive to mathematical modelling.

Bauxite mining on Cape York Peninsula (CYP) commenced in the early 1960s in the region surrounding the town of Weipa. Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) operates its bauxite mines on the homelands of 11 Indigenous Traditional Owner groups. The mining activity currently operates under three Aboriginal Agreements including an Indigenous Land Use Agreement – the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement (WCCCA) – which provides RTA with access to the land in return for a range of benefits to the Traditional Owners, including employment, training, royalty payments and future relinquishment of the land (Klimenko and Evans, 2009). Despite reports of some ‘good progress’ in meeting the terms of the WCCCA (Klimenko and Evans, 2009, p 5), many of the region’s Traditional Owners remain dissatisfied. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted underground tests and computer analyses to study coal mine roof behavior. Southern Ohio Coal Company provided test sites it) their Heigs mines located near Athens, Ohio. Testing apparatus was adapted for monitoring roof behavior at the face of mining from a remote surface location. Finite element analyses were applied to study the structural conditions present. Test sites were located at three different intersections of entries and crosscuts of the room-and-pillar mine. Electrical read-out instruments were used to record roof bolt loads, roof sag, and roof-floor convergence. They were installed during the roof bolting cycle of a conventional mining section and data was recorded for several months. Normal mining operations continued throughout the test period with minimal interruptions due to the installation and monitoring of the instruments. A computerized data acquisition system, partly underground, partly on surface, permitted continuous monitoring of data and its retrieval, display, manipulation, and storage. The finite element code used to model the test sites accounted for three-dimensional geometry, nonlinear material behavior, and the mining excavation and bolt installation sequences. Results of the test are highly variable. Comparable values between test and analysis results were obtained by applying statistical averaging of. roof test data. Results of the analyses indicate that bolts have a lesser effect on the gross behavior of mine roofs than has been indicated and that bolt load changes are strongly influenced by mining excavation sequence, bolt-placement sequence, and face distance

THE system Ti-CI- has been studied by several investigators." ' Though titanium and chromium are completely miscible at high temperatures, an intermediate phase of the approximate atomic proportions TiCr, has been identified at various compositions between 60 and 68 wt pct Cr. The structure of this phase was established as the cubic C15 (MgCu2) type with 24 atoms per unit cell and a lattice parameter 6.929 kX.2 During a study of the ternary system, Ti-Mo-Cr,5 the existence of a high temperature modification of the TiCr, phase was discovered. In a series of alloys annealed at 1300°C and containing from 60 to 70 wt pct Cr and 5 pct Mo, a new phase was present which did not correspond to either ß solid solution or TiCr,. By trial, the new phase was identified to be of the hexagonal C14 (MgZn2) structure with 12 atoms per unit cell. Further work showed that the hexagonal structure was. in fact, also present in binary Ti-Cr alloys quenched from high temperatures. To make the identification more certain, the intensities of the various reflections were calculated assuming a composition TiCr2 and C14 structure. Table I lists reflection planes, interplanar distances, calculated intensities, and a comparison of these values with the lines of a binary Ti-Cr alloy (66 pct Cr) annealed for 20 min at 1385°C and water quenched. Since high angle lines were more diffuse, the correspondence between visually observed and calculated intensities was not as good at these angles. Lattice parameters were computed to be a = 4.922 kX, c = 7.945, c/a :- 1.614. The corresponding interatomic distances are: titanium to titanium distance, 3.00:, kx, chromium to chromium distance, 2.43, kX, titanium to chromium distance, 2.88,, kX. These compare to 3.00, 2.45, and 2.87 kX in the cubic phase, respectively.' The atomic positions in the C14 structure are as follows: Titanium 1/3, 2/3, Z; 1/3, 2/3, 1/2: 2/3, 1/3, i; 2/3, 1/3, (1/2-z); Chromium 0, 0, 0: 0, 0, 1/2; 2x, 2, 1/4; 232, x, %; X, 22, 1/4; X, 2x, 3/4; x. x, 1/4; x, x, 3/4; The values of x and z were calculated for the alloy mentioned and found as follows: z — 0.061, x = 0.165. The values assumed in the intensity calculations were those for an ideal close-packed lattice or z = 1/16, x = 1/6. Work in the Ti-Mo-Cr system indicates that y2 the hexagonal modification of TiCr2, is the stable phase above 1300°C, while y1 with the cubic structure is stable below 1000°C. X-ray examination of a number of alloys annealed at intermediate temperatures showed that the hexagonal and cubic phases can coexist. Alloys quenched from 1000°C and annealed at 1100" and 1200°C showed small amounts of y2 at the higher temperature. A considerable amount of y, seemed present, however, in cast alloys annealed at 1100°C. It further appears that there is a small but definite solubility range for both phases in the ternary system. "THE FIRST COMMENTATOR that I will call on is Mr. W. G. (Bill) Brissenden, Vice-President, Mines, Noranda Mines Ltd. Bill, would you care to comment.W. G. BRISSENDEN ...Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I spent some time reading the four papers that were presented here, yesterday evening, and decided that the four to six minutes that I had been allotted for this afternoon were going to be pretty tough to meet. It's a very big subject and I just hope that I will be able to stay within my time limit. As has been so aptly demonstrated by the members of our panel here this afternoon young men in growing numbers continue to be attracted to careers in the mineral industry, especially to careers in mining engineering. Now from 80 the point of view that the profession may have regained its status this is indeed welcome news. However, perhaps all of the members seem to have the suspicion that the number of mining engineers that the industry can absorb is a much lower figure than previously forecast. It is said that technical school graduates are now occupying some of the jobs once considered the private preserve of the mining engineer and also that mining engineering undergraduates are having trouble locating summer employment. If these interpretations of mine are correct then we are now confronted not only with our old dilemma - whither the mining engineer - but also with an urgent need to solve it. We cannot allow our profession to become once again an undesirable one in the eyes of our youth because if we permit such a thing to happen a second time the profession may never recover."

The present paper is a progress report on an investigation of the physical factors of oil and gas and especially of their sands,' such as pore space, size of pores or permeability, retentivity, viscosity of the oil, temperature, pressure, thickness and area of the pay sand, water relations, and capillarity. The purpose is to determine as many of these physical factors as possible, and to ascertain the relations existing, directly or indirectly, between these physical factors and the production of oil and gas. As yet only pore space2 and size of grains of pay sands have been investigated, although an apparatus has been designed to determine the permeability of a sand to oil, water, or gas under definite drops of pressure between the entrance face and exit face of the sample. Messrs. E. W. Shaw, R. Van A. Mills, D. Dale Condit, G. B. Richardson, G. C. Matson, and C. H. Wegemann collected the samples upon which the physical determinations were made. Acknowledgment is made to my colleagues of the United States Geological Survey for many suggestions and criticisms; to Mr. Mills for the production data given of the oil wells from which some of the samples were collected; to Mr. A. Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

SOME small vanadium-bearing deposits on the west coast of British Columbia about 100 miles north of Vancouver are of interest for several reasons. They are of a type that is, so far as we know, unique. They are difficult to identify as being vanadiferous so that, unless they are described, other similar deposits could easily pass unrecognized. Furthermore, although none of them has as yet been proven to be of commercial proportions, no good reason is apparent why larger, and therefore valuable, deposits should not occur under similar geological conditions. The original discovery on Quadra island was made in 1932 and has been recorded by H. V. Ellsworth and H. C. Gunning (l). Since 1932, prospecting in the area has revealed other similar deposits, one about a mile south of the original and another some ten miles to the east, near Menzies bay on Vancouver island. The Quadra Island showings are a mile and a half north of the head of Gowland harbour, a small inlet that is easily reached by gas boat from Campbell river, about four miles to the southeast on Vancouver island. The deposits were examined by the writers in the spring of 1943 in connection with field work sponsored by the Department of Geology, University of British Columbia. We are indebted to Mr. G. A. Dirom and Mr. Lothrop, of Vancouver, for helpful data on the Menzies Bay deposits, and to Dr. V. Dolmage for making a brief trip to Gowland harbour and discussing the deposits.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la situación del carbón peruano, así como las mejoras para impulsar su producción a nivel nacional. Para ello, es necesario una mayor facilidad en el empleo de la electricidad y de los combustibles líquidos y gaseosos derivados del petróleo como en las cocinas domésticas, así como la estimulación en la sustitución del petróleo por el carbón en diversos usos. Asimismo, el Estado desarrolla un plan donde se beneficie a los mineros particulares de producción de carbón a través de asistencia especializada, instalación y operación en el puerto de Chimbote, así como de una planta de lavado y briquetación de los carbones de la citada región del Santa, y la adquisición de locomotoras y material rodante especial para el transporte económico del carbón en el ferrocarril que comunica las minas de carbón con el citado puerto de Chimbote.

In the death of Sir William Siemens, the Institute loses its most distinguished honorary member, one who, without exaggeration, may be ranked among the greatest Men of the century. In justification of this claim, I quote in part the words of two other men eminent in the walks of science. Professor Huxley, addressing the Royal Society, spoke of Siemens as "a marked example of vast energy, large scientific acquirements, and intellectual power of a high order," and as one " who had no superior in fertility and ingenuity of invention, while hardly any living man so thoroughly combined an extensive knowledge of scientific principles with the power of applying then] in a commercially successful manner. The value of his numerous inventions must be measured, not merely by the extent to which they have increased the wealth and convenience of mankind, but by the favorable reaction on the progress of pure science which they, like all such inventions, have exerted, and will continually exert." Dr. Wedding, in his address before the Verein zur Befarderung des Gewerbefleisses in Preussm, speaks of Siemens as being "so fortunate as to combine German erudition with British activity in such a manner that both nations, Gertnan as well as English, were equally proud of him; and, now that his rich life is ended, regret is expressed on both shores of the North Sea, first by the Germans that his entire life had not been spent in Germany, and his powers dedicated to Germany, and by the English that he was not born a Briton." Germany may well be proud of being the birth-place, not only of such a man, but of such a family; for where in history shall we find in a single family such a wide range of knowledge so successfully applied to the arts? "Modified calcination conditions on the extraction of rubidium resources from muscovite (KAlz[AlSi301o](OH)2) ore are systematically studied. The impact of various factors on the rubidium leaching rate is also analyzed, including the agent types, roasting time, the mass ratio, roasting temperature, etc. The results indicate that the best agent is a combination of sodium chloride and calcium chloride, its mass ratio ofmuscovite/NaCl/CaClz is 1:0.25:0.25. Calcined at 8500 for 30 minutes, the rubidium leaching rate is up to 90%. The reaction of muscovite ore with the chlorinating agent CaC12 has been studied by TG/DSC, the calcined intermediates are identified by XRD, and the surface morphology before and after leaching is characterized by SEM. Rubidium chloride products can be obtained with a purity of 92% by using t-BAMBP extraction, hydrochloric acid reextraction and purification.IntroductionRubidium is one ofrare alkali metals, which is found in 1981 by German R.W. Bunsen and G.R. Kirchhof. Rubidium includes the following features: atomic number is 37, each atom weight 85, the body-centred cubic lattice, each unit cell has two metal atoms, and the density is 1.532g/cm3. The properties of low melting point (312.46 K) and malleability make rubidium have a strong chemical activity and photoemission. Rubidium provides a main material for manufacturing phototube with a wide range oflight waves, which possess high sensitivity and stability. Efforts are being made to carry out research on rubidium ion gngine, magnetic flux generators and thermoelectric transudcer, etc. Rubidium exists in muscovite ore(KA12[AlSh01o](OH)2 (monoclinic system and hexagonal layered structure) as isomorphism and replace the large radius of the potassium atoms, as well as part of rubidium locate between structure layers. The complex components bring great difficulty in comprehensive recycling."

The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The particularity of the assessment is determined by the risk in question.

El artículo concluye con una propuesta de convenio de participación conjunta de la minería y el Estado para atender a la ampliación de la frontera agrícola en las regiones altoandinas.
