During the summer of 1994, a new PID-based control strategy was installed on line B of the grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. Part I of this paper described the methodology used to select the appropriate control strategy using a phenomenological dynamic simulator. Part II presents the implementation of the control strategy. Prior to the controller installation, it was necessary to solve various problems related to the process, such as a cyclic behaviour of the rod mill feed tonnage, a problem related to the mill water source and the calibration of the flowmeters. Once these problems were solved, the control strategy was accomplished in two steps. Step 1 corresponds to the installation of control loops to regulate the pump box level and the cyclone overflow density. Step 2 describes the implementation of a loop to control the cyclone feed density. According to Part I, a loop to control the circulating load is also part of the original design. However, reasons are given to explain the rejection of this loop. For both steps, technical procedures such as filtering, process identification and controller tuning are detailed. Finally, the operator’s interface is briefly described.

COMPOSITION OF CHARGES AND CONSUMPTION OF FUEL AT VARIOUS WORKS. A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. Indonesia over the last 15 years has experienced a surge in coal exploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings; the most significant, for large economic coal deposits, are the foreland basin setting of the large Neogene coal deposits of South Sumatra.

"The carbon-in-pulp process has been used extensively in the gold industry since the late 1970s to recovery leached gold from solution. Despite more than 30 years of experience in operating carbon circuits, average gold solution loss has remained at an average of 0.02–0.03 ppm (mg/L), higher than the ‘best practice’ target of 0.01 ppm.Process modelling, such as SIMCIL developed by the Curtin Gold Technology Group (GTG), can provide information on optimum set points; however, manual control of the circuit limits the potential benefits.An automated carbon measurement device, the Scout Carbon Meter, has been developed to allow for automation of carbon concentration measurement, and automated control of the carbon transfer pumps. An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) was used to study the leaching of pure gold in deaerated 1 M Na2S solution. Multiple cyclic voltammograms were measured between -0.76 and 1.242 V (SHE) at 20 mV/sec and 2 mV/sec and the frequency shift of the quartz crystal was simultaneously measured. Both the forward and reverse scans showed oxidation occurred between -0.40 to 0.20V. The frequency shift increased during both the forward and reverse scans in the potential range of -0.40 to -0.06 V indicating electrode mass decreased. Since at -0.40 to 0.20 V oxidation peaks were also observed, part of the oxidation was due to oxidation of gold. Eh-pH diagrams were constructed and showed soluble Au(I)-S(IV) species formed between -0.30 and 0.10 V (SHE). Atomic absorption spectroscopy of the test solutions and the mass change recorded by EQCM both showed about 0.015 mg of gold leached. Since the majority of the frequency shift increase corresponding to gold oxidation occurred at -0.40 to -0.06 V during multiple cyclic voltammogram measurement, the total leaching of gold could be approximated to occur at this potential interval to give a leaching rate of ca. 6.4x10-5 mg/s-cm2.

Polycrystalline CdTe thin films were prepared by vacuum evaporation on glass substrates. The I-V plots which were linear were used to find the resistivity. A value of 2.10×106 .cm was obtained. The transmittance was measured in the wavelength range 400-1100 nm. The bandgap energy was found to be 1.48 eV. X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the material deposits in the zinc blend structure with one strong reflection from the C(111) plane. The scanning electron microscope image shows a uniform surface with a small density of large (mµ1£) grains scattered on the surface.

This report presents the results of an investigation of comminution in tumbling mills. Five different topics involved with ball mill and rod mill grinding kinetics were studied and the results analyzed in terms of phenomenological size reduction and transport models. Continuous rod mill grinding was found to be characterized by high Peclet numbers which permit simulation to be carried out by several methods. The dry batch ball mill grinding of mineral mixtures showed that the breakage rates of the components were composition-dependent but time-independent and were normalizable with specific energy. Locked-cycle tests on mineral mixtures showed that a grinding circuit may take a long time to attain steady-state, during which time the composition of the mill holdings, and hence the breakage rates of the components, continuously changed. This study revealed that under plant conditions, grinding circuits can be in transience perpetually. The transport of mineral mixtures through drums was found to exhibit complex size and/or density-dependent segregation. However, the grinding media in a ball mill can eliminate such segregation, thereby simplifying the modeling of the continuous grinding of complex feeds. Wet batch rod mill grinding on single minerals divulged that the normalizability of breakage kinetics is valid for slurries of constant pulp density at different hold-ups but cannot be extended to slurries varying in pulp density.

Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.

Após 10 anos da aprovação da portaria 598 do Ministério do Trabalho, e ter realizado Laudo de Inspeção em mais de 60 sites industriais de grande porte, a PDCA Engenharia tem sido envolvida no processo de adequação do sistema de gestão de manutenção e operação das instalações elétricas de seus clientes. O relatório de inspeção preconizado no item 10.2.4.g da NR-10 estabelece a obrigatoriedade de se levantar os aspectos não conformes, estabelecer um plano de adequação definindo responsáveis e prazo de execução. Com os efetivos de manutenção reduzidos, nossos clientes passaram a envolver a PDCA na implementação das ações de adequação. Este trabalho consiste entre outras coisas na identificação das intervenções críticas de operação e manutenção das instalações elétricas (15 a 20 no máximo por site), analisá-las do ponto de vista dos riscos elétricos e adicionais associados a cada etapa de execução, estabelecer as medidas de controle necessárias para a mitigação destes riscos, redigir procedimentos e treinar o pessoal envolvido. Outros procedimentos devem trabalhar a eliminação dos riscos para os trabalhadores não autorizados (leigos), que interajam indiretamente em instalações elétricas e serviços com eletricidade. Apresentamos um resumo desta experiência recente com clientes da área Química/Petroquímica e da área de Logística.

Mineral resources of the Rice Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA), in the Mojave Desert of southeastern California, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey during 1980. The study consisted of an examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas by the Bureau: of Mines and geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations by the Geological Survey. Little indicated potential for the presence of mineral resources exists in the valley floor segment of the study area. The Big Maria Mountains section of the study area has some potential for mineral resource development. Decorative building stone from both bedded quartzite deposits and weathered limestone surface rubble (driftwood stone) has been produced from the Big Maria Mountains segment of the study area. Total production is unrecorded but probably small. A 700,000 ton (640,000 t) quartzite resource was inferred and 4,500 tons (4,100 t) of driftwood stone within the study area was estimated. A relatively pure limestone deposit inside the study area contains an inferred resource of 14 million tons (13 million t). One prospect suggests a potential for the presence of manganese resources although none were estimated. The likelihood of discovering oil, gas, coal, uranium or geothermal energy is low; potential sources are not known to exist.

Due to economic aspects and environmental regulations recycling of slag and waste from ferroalloy production became a very important issue for the companies during the last years. The treatment of slag depends prior on the composition, especially on their content of valuable metals and impurities. The final aim should be a total re-use of these materials in the industry e.g. cement industry, pig-iron production etc.. Therefore, to reach the required physical and chemical properties for a further use, possibilities of a metallurgical treatment have been investigated. The conditioning of slag with a high V-, Mo- and P-content via reducing metal bath showed to be one alternative. To determine the optimal process parameters, practical investigations with different slag compositions and thermodynamic calculations were carried out.

Global mining company achieves significant productivity gains with three-dimensional (3D) mine models developed with Abaqus finite element analysis software. In a steep change beyond traditional processes, Abaqus finite element analysis (FEA) software from Simulia (the Dassault Systèmes? brand for realistic simulation), is being used to enhance mine design and engineering simulation at a number of major mines around the world. In North and South America, Africa and Australia some of the world?s biggest mining companies are applying FEA technology to evaluate safety and improve design planning, implementation and operations. Beck Arndt Engineering (BAE), a Sydney-based international consultancy, is a pioneer in the commercial development of engineering solutions for the mining industry. The consultancy has worked closely with engineers at Simulia Australia to expand the use of Abaqus FEA simulation software for mining applications. Among the early adoptors of mine-ready FEA technology is the world?s largest miner, BHP Billiton. With BAE?s help, BHP has already applied this technology to evaluate mines in Canada and Australia. At the BHP Billiton Nickel West Perserverance Deeps Project in Western Australia, Abaqus FEA software is now being used to help engineer the safety and productivity of planned deep-mining operations. To achieve this goal in the deep-mining environment significant technological innovation is required. Using measurements of site deformation and seismicity, Abaqus FEA models have been calibrated and, in a single day, used to simulate a full, 3D, inelastic analysis of a mine?s life cycle. In recent years, similar applications at Debswana?s Jwaneng Mine in Botswana, the Newcrest Mining Ridge-way Deeps Project in New South Wales, Australia and Rio Tinto?s Argyle Diamond mine in Western Australia have also established Abaqus FEA analysis as the lead-ing technology for multi scale, simulation-aided mining engineering. Joop Nagtegaal, a pioneer of FEA and a Dassault Systèmes Corporate Fellow, said that Abaqus FEA software is unique in its capabilities to enable mining engineers to investigate design innovations from the drawing board to full production. ?In the design stage, Abaqus models, which include rockmass volumes spanning several kilo-meters around the ore body and down to excavations just a few meters across, are used to compare and optimize engineering options,? Nagtegaal said. ?Then, as the mine goes into production, large volumes of data from the field are incorporated with the analysis models to allow them to be calibrated to a precision not previously available to the mining industry.?

IN recent years interest has been aroused in flotation rate studies both from a technical and a more practical aspect. With increasing fineness of grind becoming a necessity in treatment of low grade ores, difference:; in flotation rates of various size ranges will assume importance in the evaluation of overall recovery results. Theoretical analysis of flotation kinetics was initiated by Schuhmann,' who sought to define flotation rate of a given mineral and specified size range in terms of certain physical variables of the flotation system. Using as a basis for his analysis the bubble-particle encounter hypothesis previously advanced by Gaudin,' Schuhmann writes for the rate of flotation (R,.) of particles of average size x, Rx = PcPa(x) V F. [1] In this relation Pc and Pa represent, respectively, the probability of collision between particle and gas bubble in a given time interval and the probability of adhesion of particle to the bubble after collision. Rigorously speaking, the term PC does not have the significance of a probability factor, since it depends on the time interval and therefore can be numerically greater than unity. The term c(x) expresses the concentration of particles of an average size x in the flotation cell in weight per unit volume of pulp, and V denotes the total volume of pulp in the cell. The product, P,c(x)V, defines the frequency of particle-bubble collisl.on, and when it is multiplied by P,, the number of collisions per unit time resulting in successful adherence is obtained. The factor, F, measures the froth stability and is introduced because after fruitful bubble-particle contact some particles may still riot reach the froth launder. Coalescence of bubbles in the froth column or too short a bubble life could account for this effect. Schuhmann also introduced the concept of "specific flotation rate" (Q) to allow for the relative abundance of different mineral species in the flotation pulp. The specific flotation rate, having the dimension of reciprocal time, is defined as Eq. 2: Qx =Rx/c(x)v [2] and it also follows from Eq. 1 that Qx = PcPaF. [31 The theoretical aspects of flotation kinetics were also considered by Sutherland,3 who tried to improve Eq. 1 by expressing the probability factors in terms of such physical variables as particle radius (x), bubble radius (X), velocity of bubble relative to particle (v), the number of bubbles per unit volume of pulp (N) and the induction period (A) necessary for air-mineral adhesion. A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investi-gation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the sixteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of the latter holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The Rönnskär smelter has wide experience in the field of recycling of non-ferrous metals. Today, smelting and refining from primary and secondary raw materials are integrated in a complex flow sheet. Boliden operates a lead flash smelter, a lead refinery, a copper smelter and refinery, a sulphuric acid and sulphur dioxide plant, a slag fuming plant and precious metal plant at its Rönnskär smelter in the North of Sweden. The Business Area Smelter Operations also incorporates Boliden Bergsöe, Sweden's lead-acid battery recycler, and Norzink, Norway, where recycled zinc accounts for more than 20% of it's production. Raw materials for the Rönnskär smelter include concentrates, ashes, slags, metallic scrap, electronic scrap and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel-making dust. This paper briefly describes current operations and illustrates current measures to improve productivity. Limits to recycling as experienced by a non-ferrous smelter are, illustrated. The deportment of critical elements contained in raw materials is also discussed.

BIRINGUCCIO was born in Siena in 1480, the son of Paolo and Lucrezia di Bartolommeo Biringuccio.* He was baptized on October 20 of that year with the given names Vannoccio Vincenzio Austino Luca. His father appears to have been an architect, for in 1504 he was paid 600 scudi for his work on the walls of the Communal Palace and at the same time he was superintendent of streets for the city. The course of Biringuccio's life followed closely the checkered fortunes of the Petrucci family of Siena. A warm supporter of Pandolfo Petrucci, Biringuccio did not falter in his allegiance to the family and their party during his lifetime. It was probably to the protection and patronage of this lord that he was indebted for the opportunity to travel widely through Italy and into Germany during his early years and so to lay the foundation for the extensive knowledge of the subjects he was to describe in the Pirotechnia. In 1507, as he himself indicates (p. 48), he was 'in Friuli and. Carnia in northern Italy after having traveled in Germany,, and he also visited the, brass, works in Milan. After returning to Siena; he was sent by Pandolfo to direct the iron mines in near-by Boccheggiano. When Pandolfo died in 1512 (in which year Biringuccio's s father also died), Biringuccio continued to support the Petrucci family in the person of Pandolfo's son, Borghese, who succeeded, to the rule. Under his patronage, Biringuccio was appointed to a post in: the Armoury of the Siena Commune in 1513. In ISIS a popular uprising forced Borghese and his followers, including Biringuccio, to flee from Siena. Biringuccio and the goldsmith Francesco Castori, head of the mint, were accused of having debased the coinage alloy with the knowledge and consent of Borghese. When he failed to appear in 1516 to answer these charges-which may well have been invented by the opposing political faction-Biringuccio was declared a rebel and was exiled as a traitor to the Republic. He then traveled about Italy, was in Rome and Naples, and visited Sicily in 1517.

Preface Pipe heading is a customary and proven technology for the underground installation of all types of piping. In over 90 % of all cases, straight pipe sections are used between shaft constructions since, e.g. this follows roadways or it is necessary from the operational aspect due to pipe control methods, e.g. to use a remote control pipe sensor or comparable control devices within sight from shaft to shaft. Frequently, a straight pipeline is impossible, and is replaced by a more or less spatial alignment due to surface conditions, structures in the ground or foundations. This situation applied for the construction of the Nebensammler Neuland (intercepting sewer) in Hamburg-Neuland for sections IV and V. The following paper is not intended as a description of the complete project. It deals mainly with the special features of this pipe heading, with what I believe to be its somewhat unusual route. Meeting of June 26, 1914.-The President was authorized to appoint Advisory Committees to co operate with the United States Bureau of Mines. The President announced the appointment of Edward H. Benjamin and W. C. Ralston as additional members of the Committee on Arrangements for the San Francisco meeting, 1915. H. T. Van Ells and Judd Stewart were appointed to represent the Institute on a joint committee of several technical societies to consider the standardization of graphical methods for the presentation of statistics. The President announced the appointment of H. Foster Bain to succeed Edward H. Benjamin, resigned, on the Committee of Management of the International Engineering Congress, 1915. The Secretary was authorized to issue a new circular advertising the sale of back Transactions and to sell back Transactions, bound in cloth, at a price of $35 for 46 volumes, provided sufficient orders were received to warrant the special binding. The sum of $177.50 was contributed to the San Francisco Local Section. Upon recommendation of the Committee on Membership, 70 Members, 4 Associate Members and 7 Junior Members were elected to their respective classes; there was also one change of status from Junior Member to Member.
