The Zagros long tunnel is one of the main components of Sirvan water transfer project in western Iran. It is approximately 48 km in length and consisted of two lots. The second 26 km lot of this tunnel is under construction by a 6.73 m diameter double shield (DS) TBM. The tunnel passes through several formations with wide range rock mass qualities. During the tunnel alignment, changes in rock quality were highly frequent from poor to very good. The encountered geological conditions required TBM operation to change frequently from hard rock to soft, dry to flowing, sticky to nonsticky ground (and vice versa), more often than expected. In the course of tunneling, the machine has encountered nearly many adverse geologic conditions. The most important problems have been sudden high volume water inflow into the tunnel, sticky ground, and gas seepage, all of which resulted in reduced TBM advance rates. This study will high-light two difficult ground conditions including large water ingress and sticky ground and also the related problems encountered by the TBM along 8 km of excavated tunnel. In sticky grounds, cleaning of the clogged cutter head caused many delays and contributed to additional downtime. Application of some operational modifications, including decreased TBM thrust showed satisfactory results in such cases. While reduced thrust resulted in reduced penetration rate, but the overall TBM advance was greatly improved by the increase utilization rate and elimination of down time related to cleaning of the head. To cope with high water inflow, application of preventive measures such as pre-grouting has proved to be a more efficientsolution. The sealing of ground water inflow also decreased seepage of dangerous H2S gas and other chemicals such as hydrocarbons accompanying the groundwater.

Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. The length of the rows, and building in either one or two layers has little effect on the extent of blending.Appropriate design can provide a reasonable compromise between the four objectives.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. Three-dimensional time-lapse velocity tomograms were generated to image stress redistribution around a longwall panel to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to ground failure. Mining-induced microseismic events provided passive sources for the three-dimensional velocity tomography. Surface-mounted geophones monitored microseismic activity for 18 days. Most similar studies have utilized active sources including longwall shearers, controlled explosions, and hammer blows. These active sources generally require a person to initiate and measure the location and time of the source, and are not conducive to continuous monitoring. This method utilizes mining induced microseismic events as passive sources and lends itself well to continuous monitoring. Two event location methods were compared in order to move toward quantification of tomographic results in terms of ground conditions. Additionally, LAMODEL was utilized to determine the expected stress distribution around the longwall panel and compare these images to the velocity tomograms. Eighteen tomograms were generated, one per day, and high velocity regions in the set of tomograms generated from the initial location algorithm correlated with abutment stress redistribution predicted by numerical modeling. This research is significant as it has the potential to improve safety in underground mines and is the only example of long term passive velocity tomography implementation for the purpose of inferring stress redistribution around an area of active mining. Though still immature, this technology has the potential to allow mine personnel to image areas of active mining on a regular basis and detect areas with anomalous velocity distributions indicating potential safety hazards.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated 21 mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and adjacent to a 38,713-acre portion of the 255,058-acre Kingston Range Wilderness Study Area in 1983. The study area is 35 miles north of Baker, CA in the Mojave Desert. Mineral deposits in and adjacent to the study area are in altered carbonate rocks intruded by diabase sills near monzonite porphyry contacts. Monzonite porphyry forms the core of the Kingston Range and underlies about 70 percent of the study area. Sedimentary carbonate rocks are exposed in bands on the north and east boundaries and as isolated roof pendants in the southeastern portion of the study area.

"Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. Success of the Gold Line Eastside Ex-tension rail tunnels in Los Angeles, CA has prompted the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s (Metro) planning new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 27 km (17 miles) of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?potential methane zone,? which was not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face tunnel boring machines (TBM) will likely be specified.

Photoelastic, wire resistance, and borehole-deformation gages were used to measure the in situ strains when an outcropping Black Hand Sandstone Formation in Hocking State Forest, Hocking County, Ohio, was overcored to stress-relieve the surrounding sandstone. Strains transmitted to the photo-elastic gage did not produce isochromatic patterns suitable for quantitative analysis. Strain readings from the wire resistance gage indicated tensile-strain loading during overcoring; readings from the strain-gage bridges in the borehole-deformation gage indicated compressive-strain relaxation during overcoring. The magnitude and orientation of the computed stress fields obtained from both gages were comparable when the corresponding tensile and compressive elastic moduli were applied. Stresses computed from deformation and resistance gages at depths to 5 feet showed the maximum stresses to range from 1.042 to 2.121 times greater than the minimum stresses. The bearings of principal stresses calculated from the deformation gage readings varied between N 61° E and N 83° E; the wire resistance strain gage bearing computations varied between N 68° E and N 82° E. Measurements of in situ strain in sandstone were shown to have promise but to require further development in field technique that could likely be achieved through experience.

In January 1994, Macraes Mining Company started a new phase of exploration to find additional resources along strike and down dip of identified resources for a mill that was being expanded from 2.1 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. At 30th June 1997 a total of 456,784 m in 3,627 holes had been drilled at the Macraes Gold Project with approximately 325,000 m in 2,100 holes drilled in the latest phase of exploration. This necessitated the construction of resource estimates on a more frequent basis and resulted in the formation of a resource modelling team, assisted by Snowden of Perth. Since April 1995, 14 separate resource estimates have been completed. At Macraes, resource estimates are built using Medsystem/Minesight software. The geological interpretation is converted into a set of three dimensional wireframed solid models which are used to code drillhole composites and blocks in a block model. The interpolation method of indicator kriging is used to interpolate grade into the blocks. Classification into measured, indicated and inferred categories is on the basis of geological confidence and drill spacing. The resource estimate is reconciled against grade control polygonal estimates on a bench by bench basis and on a monthly basis. Grade control estimates are reconciled monthly to mill production. For the period 30 June 1995 to 30 June 1997, the resource estimates have under predicted tonnes by 4% and grade by 1% to under predict ounces by 5% at a 0.5g/t cut off. At ROM sulphide cutoff grade, the models have over predicted tonnes by 5%, under predicted grade by 5% to over predict ounces by 1%.

ABB offers complete electrical revamps of mining shovels with ac or dc drives, drive control, frequency converters with insular gate bi-polar transistor technology, intelligent control packages and visualization. Many of the world’s shovel excavators and draglines (walking excavators) were built in the1980s. After 15 to 20 years of round-the clock operation in openpit mines, these machines start to feel their age. Electrical parts are particularly vulnerable. Their performance deteriorates and availability and productivity fall. Even with regular ser-vice and maintenance, a machine of this age will accumulate 400 hours of unscheduled downtime a year. The need for a replacement becomes pressing, but the expense is often prohibitive.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd (PPRust) is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation. The major slope stability concern at PPRust is rapid, small-scale brittle failure on the west wall of Sandsloot open pit. In order to improve safety and mine more economically, a comprehensive slope monitoring strategy has been implemented. In the last 3 years four new state-of-the-art monitoring systems have been installed namely an ISSI microseismic monitoring system, a GeoMoS automated prism monitoring system, prismless Riegl laser scanners and a GroundProbe slope stability radar (SSR). Groundwater monitoring and visual monitoring have also been improved over the same time period. To complement the visual inspections, SiroVision digital photogrammetry is now used for predicting where future failures may occur. All these monitoring tools provide primary monitoring which is used to identify high risk areas. The SSR is then set up in that area to provide early warning of failure so evacuation can be successfully done. Fault tree analysis has proved that with this comprehensive slope monitoring strategy the geotechnical risk at PPRust is greatly reduced, allowing mining to continue safely and economically in challenging conditions.

Of the first, I know nothing; but in the second, I have spent some of my best years, and from its curious code of morals and manners, its comic hates and its unreasoning loves, its high impatience and its engulfing kindness, I have charted the narrow .and pitted path which must be trod by the woman who would success¬fully live therein.

Determining the number of boulders and cobbles that will be encountered in the tunnel envelope is one of the most difficult problems confronting the geotechnical engineer in the design of tunnels in glacial terrain. This issue is very important to the contractor, both in determining what methods will be used to construct the facilities and the advance rate that can be achieved for the chosen construction methods. The cost of constructing tunnels by pressurized face tunneling techniques is very sensitive to accurate characterization of the very coarse fraction (large cobble and boulder sized clasts), and no standard method is current available for characterizing boulders and cobbles. Careful use of large diameter borings and the sampling and analytical techniques outlined in this paper can provide a means to answer this difficult question. By performing large diameter borings and carefully recording and sampling the cobbles and boulders encountered, an estimate for the amount of these materials present in the formations sampled can be provided. Using this method allows the designer to communicate the expected geologic conditions to the prospective bidders in a manner that is both definitive and defensible. This paper describes the method as it was used in conjunction with the design of a large diameter sewer tunnel in the Columbus, Ohio area.

Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles (WRS) are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. The results of these assessments can be used to determine the applicability of the state groundwater permit program requirements to the operation and closure of these stockpiles. The objective of this hydrologic assessment was to ascertain whether or not the WRS at the Ajo Mine have a reasonable probability of discharging potential pollutants to the underlying aquifer under the operational mine conditions. The hydrologic assessment was performed based on an evaluation of climatic data, prediction of the net infiltration rate through the WRS and prediction of additional hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in WRS. The predicted net infiltration rates ranging from 0.13 inches/year (1.1x10-8 cm/s) to 0.24 inches/year (1.9x10-8 cm/s) are below the threshold value of less than 10-7 cm/s recommended by Hutchison and Ellison (1992) as being characteristic of conditions that produce no or negligible quantities of seepage. In addition, the total time required to deplete available moisture storage within the Ajo Mine WRS and for any potential seepage from the WRS to reach the underlying aquifer is estimated to range from 260 years to 1,950 years. Collectively, the climatological and geotechnical investigations and the hydrologic predictions demonstrate that the WRS at the Ajo Mine hydrologically do not have a reasonable probability of discharging pollutants to the underlying aquifer. As a result of this prediction, the stockpile will not be regulated under the state groundwater permit program and operational and reclamation requirements will be limited to managing surface water runoff.

[This paper gives the details of tests to determine the design of stoppings capable of withstanding a pressure, applied to either side, of 50 pounds per square inch,6 as required by section 104 (a) of the Operating Regulations to Govern Coal-Mining Methods on Leased Lands on the Public Domain, issued in 1921 and quoted oil page 3. The regulations stipulated that the design for such stoppings must lie approved by the United States Bureau of Standards. The engineers of that organization felt that knowledge of the strength of such structures with respect to the effect of explosion pressure in comparison with static pressure and the strength of the walls which furnish the abutments was insufficient to justify drafting specifications; therefore, tests were needed to give information upon which a rational system of design could be based. A study was then begun; and several series of tests, made by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Bureau of Standards in cooperation, grave information upon which are based the detailed specifications offered in a later section. Slabs representing concrete stoppings, with and without reinforcement, were tested at the Bureau of Standards in Washington D. C.; afterwards, full-scale stoppings were tested at the Bureau of Mines Experimental mine near Pittsburgh. It was assumed that in most coal mines the strength of the floor and roof could not be relied on, but dependence must be placed upon the strength of the coal ribs. The tests developed that the maximum strength of an unreinforced concrete stopping was obtained when it acted as a flat arch buttressed against the coil ribs; but its ultimate strength depended upon the resistance to movement offered by the coal strata against which its ends were restrained or buttressed.]

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,500 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.34 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, a long-hole stope and cut-and-fill mining methods are used at the deposits which are divided into several mining zones. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used as the backfill in the open stope. CRF design includes the aggregate design, the ratio of cement and fly ash design, and strengths for the long-hole stope and cut-and-fill. In the aggregate design, the particle size distribution is one of the most influential aggregate characteristics in determining how it will perform as a basic backfill material. Gradation helps determine durability, porosity, cement and water requirements, strength, and shrinkage. To cut the backfill cost, fly ash usually is added into the binder to replace some part of cement. However, adding fly ash can affect the strength of the backfill. The reasonable percentage of fly ash is also important for making a good and low cost backfill. Based on the different mining method, the different backfill with different strength is designed. A systematic quality control procedure for aggregate and backfill is followed. After four yeas application, CRF system in Leeville achieved very good results.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, majority owned by Phelps Dodge produces 200M lbs per year of LME Grade A copper from low cost leaching of secondary sulfides and SXEW processing. Central to the success of Cerro Verde has been the continuous improvement of leaching practices which currently yield over 80% recovery of the contained copper in the ore. This recovery has been achieved by careful attention to operational practices and leaching process fundamentals. This paper details the development of the concept of “Lixiviant Request Rate” where by solution is applied at an optimal rate for the grade, mineralogy, and the point in the leach cycle. Also paramount to the success of Request Rate technology has been the development of irrigation practices such as drip irrigation and irrigation grid design. These developments have ultimately resulted in improved copper production, decreased sulfuric acid and water consumption, decreased pumping cost, and more consistent PLS grades.

Reduction interactions in solid phases are widespread and occur in most complex metallurgical processes. Among these processes, reactions between oxides and carbon have a special importance. The authors conducted experiments for comparison of reduction by different reducing agents of impregnated chromite ores, in which grains of the reducible chromite spinel are isolated from direct contact with the reducing agent by layers of non-ore material. The results of the experiments have revealed that the beginning of reduction is preceded by thermal and impurity order-disorder transformation of the oxide lattice whilst the transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice takes place as a result of removal of oxygen anions from the zone of metal germ nucleation. Since anions are charge carriers, increase of their mobility can be monitored by changes in electrical conductivity of oxides. Respective measurements of electrical resistance of ores of different metals and a number of pure refractory oxides under heating have indicated that the beginning of reduction coincides with the time of drastic (tens of thousands times) increase of conductivity of the oxides. Besides, the temperature of the beginning of carbon-thermal reduction is in line with the Tammann temperature, i.e. the temperature of transition from the predominantly surface diffusion to volume diffusion. Segregation of metals from the oxide lattice occurs as a result of merging of anion vacancies with defect electrons on defects of the oxide lattice. The transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice requires a certain concentration of anion vacancies and inflow of electrons from the reducing agent to the site of metal segregation. Such inflow has no difficulties due to the mixed anion-electron nature of high-temperature conductivity of oxides. Thus, the reduction is not determined by oxygen diffusion, it is determined by oxygen vacancies diffusion whose speed exceeds the speed of oxygen diffusion by orders of magnitude. This determines that the kinetics of reduction considerably exceeds the kinetics of oxidation at similar temperatures since oxidation proceeds by means of mass transfer of oxygen through the layer of the generated oxide.
