Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.

Magnetic separator operation in the recovery of magnetite in heavy medium circuits was studied by conducting a series of tests on a full size wet drum magnetic separator.The significant operational variables were found to be feed pan clearance, squeeze pan clearance, dry magnetite feed rate and separator drum speed. With feed and squeeze pan clearances optimized for typical primary separator operation, magnetite loss and concentrate specific gravity were found to be related in a regular manner to dry magnetite feed rate at any drum speed.A two component model of magnetite loss is proposed, relating total magnetite loss to losses in the feed pan and squeeze pan zones. The experimental curves relating magnetite loss to dry magnetite feed rate at the various drum speeds are interpreted in terms of the two component model.The magnetite particle size distribution in the separator was also examined. The tailings magnetite was found to be finer than the feed magnetite only when the dry magnetite feed rate was low, or immediately following the introduction of a new charge of magnetite when the separator was fed at an intermediate dry magnetite feed rate.

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

The Ok Tedi Project is now a high production open-pit porphyry copper mine located in the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea (PNG). At present, total daily production is 190 000t of ore and waste. Large scale drilling and blasting has only been in operation since 1988, prior to which all material was removed by ripping and dozing. This paper reviews the steps taken over the last 12 months in establishing a more efficient drilling and blasting operation and highlights the significant reduction in powder factor. These improvements have been achieved largely through the introduction of air-bags, controlled pattern expansion and an overall focusing on the operation by involving consultants, ICI's technical service and internal departments.

The uses for which ground talcs are suited closely depend upon their physical and chemical properties , but , in spite of this fact , little scientific investigation has been made in order to devise quick and accurate tests for the determination of these properties . The chemical properties of talc are inherent and may not be altered or modified except by selective mining or by chemical processes not practical in the present status of the industry . However , the determination of chemical properties is not so important , for most uses , as of physical properties , although sometimes certain chemical characteristics are perhaps unduly insisted upon by chemists in some industries . Physical properties are dependent both upon mineralogical characteristics and upon methods of grinding and sizing and may thus be partly changed or modified by changes in practice . There is so little known of the chemistry and physics of the various processes in which talc is used that the purchase and sale of talc is governed more by rule- of- thumb methods dependent upon individual opinion and often , prejudice , than by accurate , standard tests . This not only causes unwarranted price fluctuations , but injures both the producing and consuming industries by creating false ideas of the suitability of talc for various uses . It thus seems important that present tests be standardized and made uniform for the whole industry , and that new tests devised to fill the existing gaps .

[Slide 2] Today’s Topics In my presentation today, I would like to divide my topics into four parts. First of all, I would like to describe the current situation of Japanese non-ferrous metal mining and mineral processing industries in Japan. Secondly, the supply and demand of non-ferrous metals in Japan. Thirdly, I would like to spare some minutes on the overview of overseas development by Japanese mining companies. Finally, since some people may not be sure what the Metal Mining Agency is or what this Agency, I would like to briefly introduce the Metal Mining Agency of Japan.

The Bureau of Mines, through its Minerals Availability Program (MAP), investigates the mineral supply potential of the United States and market economy countries (MEC's) for a number of minerals considered essential to the U.S. industrial base. Major activities include identification of important mines and mineral deposits, estimation of their mineral resources and production costs, and availability and sensitivity analyses. Products include data print-outs of geological and engineering information, discounted- cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) analyses of individual mining operations, commodity availability appraisals, and analytic services to Government agencies. These products are used in assessing the mineral supply position of the United States: in setting priorities for research aimed at reducing production costs and minimizing adverse environ- mental impacts and regulatory compliance costs of mining and mineral processing operations; and in formulating and evaluating Government policies that affect minerals. Bureau MAP data and analyses have been provided to the executive and legislative branches to aid in consideration of trade, tax, and stockpile policy issues. A study of the economic potential of selected seabed mineral resources supports the regulatory responsibilities of the Department of the Interior in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Analytic studies of mineral project viability, industry competitiveness, and import dependencies were also undertaken for, or in cooperation with, U.S. and foreign government agencies, industry and trade organizations, and international lending institutions.

The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.

Development of SAG liners has always been a strong focus and interest in mineral processing as SAG liners significantly impact on plant performance (throughput and grind size), material costs and plant downtime. SAG shell relines typically determine the frequency and duration of plant shutdowns. Early SAG shell liner designs relied heavily on practical experiences and were limited in their size due to weight restrictions. Significant developments in Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, material and manufacturing technologies and larger reline machines have resulted in new and improved liner designs. This paper discusses the evolution of SAG shell liner design and its progression to the Skip Row design. Case studies have been provided for the Skip Row design in a variety of applications such as Single Stage SAG (SSS), SAG and Ball (SAB), SAG and Ball with Crushing (SABC) and Pre-Crush at a variety of mill diameters ranging from 24 foot to 34 foot. A detailed assessment has also been carried out comparing liner service life, ease of reline and performance (throughput, power and grind size) for a large 34 foot SAG mill when compared to the previous design.CITATION:Toor, P, Swart, M and Ståhlbröst, H, 2017. Recent theoretical, experimental, and field studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines suggest that rock failures may be predicted and, in some instances, controlled. Theoretical studies that were later corroborated by laboratory and field studies predict that a seismic anomaly will precede rock bursts and/or roof falls in mines. The seismic anomaly is predicted to consist of an increase in the number of seismic events occurring in the immediate vicinity where the failure 1s nucleated. This increase will then be followed by a dramatic decrease of seismicity in a broad region that surrounds the location of the impending failure. The dimensions of this region allow a preliminary estimate of the time to failure (measured from the time the seismicity increase began) as well as an estimate of the energy that will be released at the instant of failure. Field observations indicating that this predicted behavior does precede rock bursts and a roof fall are presented in this report. Implications of results to the problem of failure control in mines that experience massive rock failures are discussed.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identified hearing loss as the most common job-related disease in the United States in its 1996 National Occupational Research Agenda. Previous studies by NIOSH have shown operators of surface drill rigs without cabs are commonly exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 90 dB. During hammer-drilling, A-weighted sound levels exceeding 100 dB were recorded at the operator station. NIOSH collaborated with a local drilling company to design and install a partial cab between the operator and the drill steel in an effort to reduce the sound level at the operator station. Sound level measurements in the field show the partial cab reduces the A-weighted sound level by 5-9 dB at the operator’s left ear and 2-5 dB at the operator’s right ear while hammer-drilling. This paper will briefly discuss the preliminary design of a cab and the testing of materials for construction of the prototype. Explanation of the ideas behind the prototype design and fabrication will be covered. Finally, the field test method and results will be discussed in detail.

The paper describes the geology of the gold deposits of the Yanacocha district, Northern Perú. The Yanacocha District is located 20 km north of the city of Cajamarca, whose deposits are located in the Andes of norther in Perú. Gold production may have occurred as early as Incan times, but modern exploration that began in the 1960’s targeted only copper and silver. Current mining is entirely by open pit methods with heap leach recovery. Production in 2003 was from the Cerro Yanacocha deposit and the La Quinua fluvioglacial deposit. La Quinua is not discussed in detail in this report. However, Yanacocha is described as a high-sulfidation epithermal deposit occurring in pyroclastic rocks. The success of Yanacocha has made this type of target among the most sought after by exploration companies worldwide. The important characteristics of the geology of Yanacocha are reviewed below, along with some specifics of exploration techniques used in the district.

One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.

Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

The growth and influence of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in the nickel producing industry has been quite phenomenal. Although the company's Lynn Lake deposit in Manitoba was actually dis- covered in 1941, it was not until 1945, when men and materials were more readily available as a result of the end of World War II, that the area was staked and news of the discovery leaked out. As a result of the discovery, Professor Frank Forward of the University of British Columbia was commissioned by Eldon Brown, then President and Man- aging Director of Sherritt, to develop a new nickel refining process. A pilot plant, based on the results of Professor Forward's research, was constructed in Ottawa, and after the successful testing of the Lynn Lake ore, Chemical Construction Co. was given a con- tract in 1952 for construction of a producing plant. By 1954, the Fort Saskatchewan refinery was operating at an annual production of 15 million lb of nickel metal in the form of briquetts or powder. Capacity has since been increased to 30 million lb.

A quick-reaction, mine permissible rescue vehicle (MERV) was developed for use by rescue teams. The MERV is a 6-wheeled, battery-powered unit with life support equipment and instrumentation; designed for a two-man team, with provisions for handling two victims or tools in a trailer. The vehicle is 100 inches long, 56 inches wide, and maximum height of 34 inches. It can be lowered down most mine shafts and has clearance to travel mine railways. The vehicle has power to all six wheels with power transmitted separately to either or both sets of wheels. Low-pressure, high-traction tires give the vehicle the ability to handle soft, muddy mine floors, flooded areas and significant obstacles, and can negotiate a 45% grade. Power and life support are sufficient for a 4-hour mission. The life support system is a commercially-available, approved unit currently used by MESA rescue personnel. A payout wire system provides communication between the vehicle and home base over a distance of 10,000 feet. On-board monitoring of carbon monoxide, methane and oxygen is provided, with master and individual alarms to warn of gas concentrations outside pre-set limits. A lightweight, water-tight trailer was developed for carrying victims or hauling tools and equipment.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Chino mines at Santa Rita, Grant County, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Chino mine's, operates an open-cut copper mine at Santa Rita, Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex. This mine is located about 16 miles east and slightly north of Silver City, the county seat. The ore is-transported in standard railroad cars by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co., approximately 10 miles to Hurley where it is milled. The concentrated are shipped approximately l'70 miles over the same railroad to the smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., at El Paso, Tex. (fig. 1)

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) IN, August, 1911, I read a paper before the Lake Superior Mining Institute' on surveying and sampling diamond-drill holes. The present paper gives a more thorough description of these methods, together with a few changes and notes suggested by further experience. Since August, 1911, the methods, used constantly by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have been developed to a higher degree of efficiency, and have given great satisfaction. Until a few years ago but little attention was paid to the determination of the actual course of drill-holes, to the accurate sampling and analysis of the material, or to the scientific location of the drill-holes. It has now been common practice for several years in many districts to test the inclination of drill-holes by etching glass tubes with hydrofluoric acid, but the direction of deviation from the vertical has not often been determined. Methods of determining the direction by means of a compass were first developed in connection with drilling in Victoria. The latest method used on the Rand in South Africa has been recently described by John I. Hoffman.2 In the same paper Mr. Hoffman describes an ingenious method of wedging-off a drill-bole so as to start new holes at several successive points. By this means a hole can be deflected in any desired direction, and the curvature can be controlled to a considerable extent, provided the rock is soft enough to permit the hole to be wedged off. Unfortunately, in the Lake Superior district, the jasper iron-formation is so hard that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to do this. Since the publications of Gy’s initial work, many authors have discussed the approaches to estimate the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE). Experimental tests suggested by Pitard and François-Bongarçon determine the sampling parameters K and a to calibrate Gy’s formula. The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method are well known and broadly used for many commodities. However, prior to the analysis, the collection of a representative sample is an intriguingly difficult task. The composite for the heterogeneity tests often consists of run-?of-?mine material or processed ore on a conveyor belt. In most cases the final sample does not have enough mass, mixes different geological units, represents a rare blend and does not characterise the deposit. In order to obtain a reliable composite for trace elements and low-grade ores, sampling practitioners suggest at least half a ton of material.To prevent the common representative pitfalls in the FSE, this case study focuses on a single gold-?bearing geological unit collected in situ. With this unit being structured by the mine geologists, but with the interaction between engineers and chemists, it was possible to validate the reconciliation suggested by Pitard (2015). The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method were performed using 500 kg of a smoky quartz from a single geological domain and the results were compared to Gy’s formula. The logging practice by the geologists was modified, emphasising the definition of the size of the gold nugget or its cluster, number of grains and association. Finally, a mineralogical study was conducted on the geological unit to define the liberation factor. All the information is compiled in this paper, showing the need to fully understand the mineralisation to correctly define representative samples and proper analytical techniques.CITATION:Villanova, F L S P, Heberle, A and Chieregati, A C, 2017.
