Between 1989 and 1991, the greatest number of accidents in surface coal and metal/nonmetal mines involved haulage trucks. In 1995, the most frequently cited factor contributing to the 100 fatalities in these mines was powered haulage. In 1996, over 50% of the 84 Fatalities in mining that year were in surface mining. Because some of the world's largest mobile equipment is used in surface mines, and this equipment is involved in so many accidents and fatalities, new technologies are needed to alert truck drivers and people in spaces around the truck to the possibilities of collisions.

Design of deep foundations for lateral loads requires an understanding of soil-foundation-structure response during loading. Lateral loads on a deep foundation (piles) could be due to earthquakes, winds, waves, and/or machine vibrations. Over the years, analysis of response of piles due to lateral loads evolved from closed-form solutions to p-y methods to strain wedge to finite element/finite difference modeling. Although analysis of lateral response of piles and shafts is routinely performed, there is no single guidance document and/or standard for design and testing. Several different analytical methods are available for the analysis, and the resulting design can result in significantly different responses which can create confusion. This is especially true for analyzing and designing piles in potentially liquefiable soils with lateral spread issues under seismic conditions.This guidance document is intended to assist geotechnical engineers, pile designers, and contractors in analysis, design, and testing of piles and drilled shafts for lateral loads. This document discusses the background of different analytical and testing procedures and presents the recommended methods for analysis, design and testing of piles for lateral loads.Chapter 1 defines the different kinds of lateral loads to which a single pile or pile group may be subjected. This first chapter also presents different types of piles used to resist lateral loads.Chapter 2 discusses geotechnical issues related to lateral pile design such as liquefaction and lateral spreading and other non-seismic issues. Also addressed in Chapter 2 is geotechnical site characterization (as related to lateral loads) in terms of site investigation, in-situ testing, geophysical testing, laboratory testing, and estimation of soil/rock properties.Chapter 3 discusses the background and available analytical methods and tools for the analysis and design of single piles and drilled shafts. Several methods of analyses from closed-form elastic solutions to the finite element/finite difference solutions and their applicability are discussed. Available commercial computer software packages for analyzing single piles and drilled shafts are also presented.Chapter 4 expands the discussion of single piles and drilled shafts into the analysis and design of pile groups. In addition, group effects, resistance of pile caps, results of previous experimental and analytical studies, and available analysis tools and software for pile groups are discussed.Chapter 5 presents the issue of lateral resistance of piles and drilled shafts as discussed in different national and international building and non-building codes. A summary of extensive research on several codes are presented to facilitate the compliance with different codes.Chapter 6 discusses structural design issues of individual piles and drilled shafts such as depth of fixity.Chapter 7 discusses soil structure interaction issues related to kinematic and inertial effects due to seismic loading and available methods of analyses.Chapter 8 discusses and presents the typical procedures for the lateral load testing of piles. This guideline was developed as an aid to the practicing engineer in providing information, direction and commentary on the lateral design of deep foundations. Optimum Colliery is an opencast strip mine producing 18Mt of bituminous coal per annum for the export and inland markets as well as for domestic power generation at the Hendrina PowerStation. Coal is exposed by four 60m3 and four 11m3 walkingdraglines and transported from the open cuts to the processing plants by twelve 130 ton coal haulers. Overburden and interburden areas are drilled by nine 250mm-diameter rotary drill rigs. Until 1997 all surveying tasks were conducted by electronictotal stations requiring accurate control points from which line-of-sight XYZ readings could be taken. In 1997 a GPS system was introduced which consisted of a fixed base station and two rovers. The rovers were able to perform most of the survey tasks assigned to total stations. In addition, two overburden drills were equipped with blasthole drill navigation systems, which includes the drill monitoring and material (strata) recognitions system. The rest of the drilling fleet will also be equipped with GPS systems. Blasthole positions are designed in the office based on survey and geological/geophysical information and transmitted via radio link to an industrial PC on the drills. Together with GPS positional data, both the planned and actual drill positions are displayed on an LCD screen. This eliminates the need for surveyed hole positions to be staked before drilling, and for actual hole positions to be surveyed after drilling. As holes are drilled, performance and rock property data transmitted back to the office. Future applications will include GPS monitoring of dragline positions and pad elevations. GPS receivers on the draglines will utilize the existing base station to calculate and transmit XYZ co-ordinates. Another application will be locating of boreholes in the field prior to the pumping of specified explosive charges into the blastholes. Charging instructions for each blasthole will be loaded into the computer on the explosives truck which will be equipped with a GPS system for hole identification.

The inclination of any pit wall composed of stacks of benches is limited by the overall quality and structural complexity of the rock mass in which the slope is situated. For a bench stack angle that satisfies the stability criteria, various combinations of bench height, bench face angle and berm width can be used in the slope design. The bench face angle and berm width geometries must be chosen to fit the bench stack angle but must provide a berm that will be capable of catching the volume of failed wedge material from the bench faces above. Other considerations for bench height and berm width are equipment size, ore selectivity and blasting design. This paper studies the effects of different slope configurations on slope performance as it relates to wedge stability, volume of rock safely contained on berms, and rockfall. Optimisation of the geometry is carried out based on the need to minimise the volume of failed material which limits the effectiveness of the berm. This will reduce the number of rocks that can continue to fall further, reaching geotechnical safety berms or pit ramps, that put safety of personnel and equipment at risk. For general study it is most effective to investigate and compare the performances of each of a wide range of geometrical combinations of bench height, bench face angles and berm widths that fit a variety of different bench stack angles. These analyses were conducted for a predetermined bench stack height and three different bench stack angles.

"The pollution of streams has received much attention during the last few years, and although there are many other and more serious forms of pollution, the problem of acid mine drainage is important in certain sections of the country, particularly in Pennsylvania. At the request of the United States Public Health Service the Bureau of Mines undertook to determine some of the factors contributing to formation of acid mine waters, the yearly variations in quantity and quality of drainage, effect of mining methods, and various other questions arising in connection with the problem; some attention was also given to its economic phases.In acknowledgment, the writer wishes to thank Dr. R. R. Sayers, Chief surgeon; A. C. Fieldner, chief chemist; and W. P. Yant, supervising chemist, health laboratory section of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, all of the Bureau of Mines, under whose direction the work was conducted.Because no data of a like nature had previously been determined, and with the thought that such data would throw additional light on the general subject, a stream having a number of mines draining into it was selected for observation in both high-sulphur and low-sulphur bituminous-coal districts, as designated in commercial rating. These mines and streams were visited in both wet and dry seasons to note the quantity and variations in acidity of mine drainage and the subsequent effect on streams. Maps of these streams with the sampling points are shown in Figures 1 and 2. In a report of this nature a great deal of tabular data is best emitted, but reference to the maps will serve to indicate the factors that determined sampling points, such as tributary streams and gobs."

The green field site is one that has no history of mining and as such it presents the designer with a blank canvas, on which any number of drill and blasting options can be drafted. No matter which mining method is selected all technology and experience will need to be acquired from outside sources, applied quickly and produce the right results. North Limited, in joint venture with the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent), have developed AustraliaÆs first block cave mine at Northparkes in New South Wales, Australia. This innovative and large scale mining project was taken from a green field site in November 1993 to a fully commissioned block cave mine in December 1997. NorthparkesÆ Endeavour 26 mine is now producing at a rate of 3.9Mt per annum from a 27Mt ore block. Prior to 1993 no history of mining activity existed at Northparkes. The rock had never been blasted and many questions were raised about how it would behave. While it was clear that the Endeavour 26 (E26) orebody contained geotechnical properties appropriate to block caving, the blasting methods required to establish a block cave mine had never been used in Australia and no designs were available. The joint venture partners had no prior experience with block caving and it was immediately apparent that this blasting technology would have to be acquired from foreign sources and applied to the unique local conditions. Conceptual designs for the block cave drill and blast were first drafted in 1994, first issued for drilling in December 1995 and first blasted in January 1996. 470 km of drill metres and four million tonnes of rock were blasted to complete the undercutting project by September 1997. This paper will provide those developing new drill and blast projects with an inside view of how one small technical team solved many design challenges to successfully construct AustraliaÆs first block cave mine under strict quality controls and ambitious time constraints.

Two comprehensive surveys, which focus upon backfill practices and the economics of backfilling in underground mines in Canada, have been conducted. The two surveys were designed to assess operational practices and costs associated with the wide scope of filling operations that must be met by individual mines, ranging from raw material feed to the preparation plant, through underground backfill transportation, to in-stope product placement. This paper presents the current state of backfill usage in Canada, identifies trends in minefill practices and provides mine operators with an updated database of information upon which they might compare their own practices and costs with present trends throughout the industry.

The authors developed the TBM Excavation Control System (the TBM Navigator), in order to realize the advanced observational construction. During the excavation using this system, the rock strength value is immediately calculated from the TBM driving data as an index of rock properties, and the drill energy coefficient is also calculated from the drill logging data that is carried out using the probe hole ahead of the tunnel face. In this study, a new, geostatistical simulation-based method is proposed for the automatic prediction of the rock properties ahead of the tunnel face with good precision, using both the drill logging data and the TBM driving data. The applicability of this method is validated through the prediction at the actual tunnel excavation that passes through the faults. Les auteurs ont mis au point un Système de Contrôle de forage avec la machine à pleine section (Navigateur de la machine à pleine section), en vue de réaliser un système de surveillance plus efficace. Avec ce système, la résistance de la roche est immédiatement calculée, au cours du forage, à partir des données de conduite de la machine, comme indice des propriétés de la roche, et le coefficient d'énergie de la foreuse est également calculé à partir des données de log de forage collectées dans un trou de sonde foré dans le front de taille. Dans cette étude, on propose une nouvelle méthode basée sur la simulation géostatistique qui permet de prévoir d’une manière automatique, des propriétés de roches se trouvant derrière le front de taille avec une précision satisfaisante, à l’aide des données de log de forage et celles de conduite de la machine à pleine section. Cette méthode s’est avérée suffisamment précise au cours du forage d’un tunnel réel qui traversait une zone de failles. Die Autoren entwickelten das TBM Ausschachtungssteuerungssystem (den TBM Navigator), um noch besser überwachte Bauarbeiten zu ermöglichen. Unter Einsatz dieses Systems wird die Gesteinsfestigkeit während der Ausschachtungsarbeiten unmittelbar aus den TBM Antriebsdaten als ein Index für die Gesteinseigenschaften berechnet. Gleichzeitig wird auch der Bohrenergiekoeffizient aus den Bohrlogdaten berechnet, die an Hand der Probebohrung am Stirnende des Tunnels erhalten wurden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde ein neuartiges, auf geostatistischen Methoden basierendes Verfahren für die automatische und angemessen genaue Vorhersage der Gesteinseigenschaften am Stirnende des Tunnels vorgeschlagen, für das sowohl die Bohrlogdaten als auch die TBM Antriebsdaten verwendet werden. Die Anwendbarkeit dieser Methode wird durch die Vorhersage bei einer tatsächlichen, durch Verwerfungen verlaufenden Tunnelausschachtung bewiesen.

The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the use of investigations and reports of all accidents.

Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

To reduce the exposure of mining machine operators to respirable dust. Approach: A protective curtain of filtered air is blown down around the operator's head, from a manifold mounted on the machine canopy. How It Works: Mine air is drawn into the system through a filter which removes respirable dust. The filtered air enters a centrifugal blower which pushes it through a flexible hose to a manifold mounted on the canopy above the operator. Air leaves the manifold through a perforated plate and flows down around the operator's head. A photograph of an installed system can be seen in Figure 1. The work is detailed under a number of main headings corresponding to the organizational structure of the Division , the various activities being under the immediate direction of unit chiefs , who report directly to the author . Specific credit , however , is due to the individual unit leader and his assistants .

As part of BHP Iron Ore's policy and goal of achieving a high standard of environmental management within its operations, a protocol for mine closure has evolved. The need to demonstrate sound environmental management with respect to site decommissioning meant that a comprehensive, environmentally sensitive closure protocol was required. Within this framework, a four-phase protocol was developed, the first phase was the determination of objectives in relation to site rehabilitation and end land use. The second phase was the determination of the process required to achieve these objectives. The third phase was the application of this process in a site specific manner. The fourth and final phase was monitoring of the site with regard to the achievement of determined objectives. The protocol was originally developed to direct the closure and decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site in 1992. This being the first total site decommissioning for BHP Iron Ore. Since that time the protocol has been successfully utilised for the closure of the Yampi (Koolan Island) operations (in 1993/94) and the Shay Gap/Nimingarra Operations (in 1994/95).

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. Dak., were mapped and sampled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. El presente trabajo señala la aplicacíón de las estrategias en Sistema de Gestión de la producción en la mina Raura, de forma que mejore su administración de flujo de recursos y actividades para lograr óptimos resultados con mayor productividad. Entre sus principales objetivos están: la determinación de los stándares de producción en tonelaje, leyes, costos y plazos, que hagan rentables los procesos de operación minera, la definición de sistemas standarizados que generen valor económico en cada uno de sus procesos. Asmismo, se realizó un diagnóstico previó que abarcó los procesos de geología, planeamiento, exploración, explotación, beneficio de minerales en planta concentradora, mantenimiento y proceso de comunicación gerencial. Los resultados y datos de este diagnóstico tiene como base la referencia para la evaluación y avance del proyecto.
