Recycling of retired cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic (PV) modules has attracted attention due to new European environmental regulations. Recycling tellurium from CdTe PV modules is becoming more important because of the low availability of this metal. We investigated several treatment paths for reclaiming tellurium from solutions obtained from leaching fragments of CdTe PV modules. Our experiments showed that conventional soda ash neutralization/hydrolysis methods recovered only 50~60% of tellurium. However, by appropriately combining neutralization and sulfide precipitation, almost all the tellurium present in the leaching solution was precipitated and recovered; the concentration of tellurium in the processed solution was reduced from 900-1000 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L, yielding a tellurium recovery greater than 99%. This method can be incorporated in the scheme of recycling spent CdTe PV modules and manufacturing wastes. It may be also an alternative to the current operations for removing tellurium from copper anode slime leaching solutions.

This paper describes the conver¬gence and load measurements carried out in inclined seams at five longwall faces, two of which were supported by hydraulic props and the other three by conventional timber supports in Karadon-Gelik mine. The minimum support capacities determined in this study are compared with the results obtained from two empirical approaches suggested by Wilson (1975) and Jacobi (1981). The characteristics of hydraulic props to be used and support patterns in the longwalls are found, conclu¬sions are drawn and suggestions are made. Design nomograms are prepared for field engineers, in order to be able to approach the problem more confidently and realistically.

The test facility at the Delft University of Technology, in the Netherlands, was characterised. Advantages include the possibility of separating particles with high but different densities up to 9 g/cm3, the ease of adjustment to any required separation density and the absence of moving parts. Simultaneous separation of more than two types of particles is possible and the magnetic fluid is safe and convenient to use compared with other heavy liquids. Disadvantages include loss of magnetic fluid with outgoing particles (cost approx US $10/l) and degeneration of fluid due to bacterial activity, reaction with particles and with surroundings. Only non-magnetic materials can be separated, there is limited potential for scaling up and high investment is required on account of the cost of magnets. Future improvements in the design of the apparatus and the properties of the magnetic fluids can only enhance its attractiveness for commercial applications

Until it was defunded in 1995, the U.S. Bureau of Mines maintained a Cost Estimating System (CES) for prefeasibility-type economic evaluations of mineral deposits and estimating costs at producing and non-producing mines. This system had a significant role in mineral resource assessments to estimate costs of developing and operating known mineral deposits and predicted undiscovered deposits. For legal reasons, the U.S. Geological Survey cannot update and maintain CES. Instead, statistical tools are under development to estimate mining costs from basic properties of mineral deposits such as tonnage, grade, mineralogy, depth, strip ratio, distance from infrastructure, rock strength, and work index. The first step was to re-estimate ?Taylor?s Rule? which relates operating rate to available ore tonnage. The second step was to estimate statistical models of capital and operating costs for open pit porphyry copper mines with flotation concentrators. For a sample of 27 proposed porphyry copper projects, capital costs can be estimated from three variables: mineral processing rate, strip ratio, and distance from nearest railroad before mine construction began. Of all the variables tested, operating costs were found to be significantly correlated only with strip ratio.

Low-grade porphyry copper ores containing chalcopyrite as the primary mineral was leached by two strains of acidophilic, thermophilic microbes belonging to the genus Sulfolobus. Leach tests were conducted in glass columns heated to 60-70° C. Pinto Valley and San Manuel ores sized to -1/2 inch + 50 mesh were effectively leached by the thermophilic organisms, but pinto Valley and Cyprus Bagdad ores sized to -2 inch + 1/2 inch resisted leaching. Aeration did not contribute measurably to bacterial copper extraction, since two columns, one inoculated and one sterilized, having a rest/ leach cycle without recurrent aeration exhibited copper extraction patterns similar to those of the aerated columns. Distilled water can be substituted for 9K medium without diminishing copper extraction. Decreasing the pH of the leachate to about 1.8 enhanced the extraction of copper from pinto Valley ore with the thermophilic microbes. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was found to be relatively ineffective at copper extraction from pinto Valley ore. Of eleven solvent extraction reagents tested, Adogen 364 and Warsol at concentrations of 0.1% and 0.012 were inhibitory to oxygen uptake by the two Sulfolobus strains. Di-2-ethyhexyl phosphoric acid at concentrations of 0.1%, 0.01% and 0.001% were totally inhibitory to the respiration of both organisms.

Para ello, se han utilizado herramientas como: la recolección de datos, visualización de datos, diagramas de Pareto y análisis de beneficios. Asimismo, para una óptima efectividad del equipo deben mantenerse registros precisos de la operación del equipo.

Procedures for detecting and locating seismic sources are adapted to the case of entrapped miners. During an emergency the entrapped miner is likely to generate seismic signals, by knocking against the walls of the shaft. With a seismic array station deployed near the disaster area, the seismic signals can be recorded. Two algorithms are presented for the location of the source from the arrival times of a seismic phase: The first algorithm produces one, most probable location, under the assumption of constant velocity of propagation of seismic waves in the medium. The second algorithm is similarly applicable, however without any restriction on the seismic velocities in the medium between the source and the array. While the first algorithm uses an analytic approach, the second one is based on a trial and error procedure. The second algorithm gives locations with arbitrarily high accuracies, depending only on the accuracy of arrival time measurements and on the compatibility of the true velocity distribution and the assumed velocity model. The algorithm is shown not to require under certain conditions direct .arrival time measurements, thus eliminating a potential source of errors in the location of entrapped miner.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the permeability of coal fracture systems as a function of effective stress. The detailed steps in accomplishing this objective are given in Article I of the contract under which the work was conducted as follows: Sec. 1.1 The objective shall be to determine the permeability of the coal fracture system as a function of effective stress. At least three bituminous coals shall be studied and at least five samples of each coal shall be tested. The sample size shall be as large as possible to be representative of coal found in the seam; a minimum of four inches is preferred.

INTRODUCTION A prerequisite to the evaluation and management of oil properties is accurate information derived from the analysis of core samples; but reliable data, such as porosity and permeability, can result only if all oil and water have been removed from the core samples analyzed. The most common method of core cleaning used to date has been Soxhlet extraction—a somewhat static technique, which depends upon the slow diffusion of hot solvent through the core sample. Soxhlet extraction performs satisfactorily only with highly permeable samples and at best requires long cleaning periods. The centrifuge method was developed in 1951 by Continental Oil Co. to overcome the inefficiencies inherent in the Soxhlet method. The new method is basically an operation in which hot solvents are caused to flow through the samples under the influence of centrifugal force. The centrifuge unit has proved so successful that samples which formerly required days for partial extraction can now be completely cleaned in approximately one hour. The original idea was conceived in 1950 by Elmer S. Messer, whose early experiments consisted of flowing solvent over sandstone samples suspended in a revolving basket and driven by a vertically mounted vacuum cleaner motor. Results were so outstanding that more permanent units were constructed. A modified model using this basic design was recently built by Core Laboratories, Inc., and is now used regularly in their operations. DESIGN Fig. 1 shows a photograph of the two extractors routinely used to clean small core plugs in the Production Research Div. of Continental Oil Co.'s Ponca City laboratories. For illustrative purposes, the basket from one of the units has been removed, and because both extrac- tors are of identical design only one is described in the following discussion. Each extractor unit consists of a centrifuge and a solvent still. The core basket of the centrifuge is made of mild cold rolled steel 7 1/2 in. in diameter and 1 1/8 in. deep. The basket holds 18 1-in. samples (cubical or cylindrical) and is attached directly to a cone fitted to the shaft of the motor. Both the outer rim and the hollow hub of the basket contain perforations for the passage of solvent and extract. The solvent is delivered to the perforations by means of a copper tube inserted into the hollow hub. The motor is a vertical tool post grinder motor; (115 v, 5.6 amp, 0-60 cycles, AC-DC, rated at 1/3 hp). It has a rated speed of 10,000 rpm under full load and 15,000 rpm with no load. Variation of speed is obtained by the use of a variable transformer. The solvent still was constructed from one end of a stainless steel oxygen bottle by inserting a heating element, sight glass, and piping as shown on the schematic diagram, Fig. 2. The heater used was a three-position, 1,000 w, 115-v, immersion type. Intermittent flow of solvent to the centrifuge is obtained by means of a siphon bottle inserted between the condenser and the centrifuge.

In 1984, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined 41,550 acres of the North Fork Owyhee River Wilderness Study Area for mineral resources. This study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by tuffs and basalt of Tertiary age. There are no known mines, claims, or prospects in or near the area. The northeast and southwest corners of the area are covered by oil and gas leases or lease applications, but no known exploration has been conducted. On Nickel Creek and Pleasant Valley Tables, in the southern part of the area, thin flows of vesicular, moss-covered basalt occur that are suitable for use as decorative building stone. The stone available for exploitation crops out over several square miles. However, more suitable material, outside the study area, is closer to potential markets.

The increasing interest in the subject of electrical separation warrants the addition to what has already been written of a few lines covering the practical workings of the Tilly Foster mill under the direction of Mr. E. S. Moffat, General Manager. Since my last paper was presented to the Institute, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, the superintendent, has had thrust upon him for solution several problems complicated by the introduction of new conditions. 1. The richer portion of the lean ore dump, and that nearest the railroad track, having been worked up in 1890, the handling of the balance, including a largely increased amount of rock, could only be accomplished at an increased cost. 2. The tailings had accumulated close about the mill to such an extent that arrangements had to be perfected to move them further away.

As a result of early experiments in underground mine illumination, the Bureau of Hines recognized the need for additional experience with the underground lighting of coal mines having low seam thicknesses. There was already experience with tile illumination of coal mines having higher coal seams, and this contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) was undertaken to contribute to the "low coal" experience. For the purpose of this contract, a "low coal? mine is defined as one having less than 45 inches of overall headroom in the working places. As a practical limit, 26 inches was the minimum coal seam thickness to be encountered in this program. In one instance, the maximum coal seam thickness was eight to ten feet, however, this particular work was at the direction of the Technical Project Officer (TPO) by virtue of the unique type of lighting arrangement that was to be evaluated which would be useful for low coal. At the outset of the contract, three major tasks were established. The first two tasks involved the installation of permissible fluorescent lighting equipment at two low coal mines. The intention was to illuminate mining sections in each case consisting of one or more machines. The third task was to illuminate a variety or mining equipment including a longwall. For the purpose of this report, the fol-owing identifies the particular installations associated with each task.

The stability of floors of large drydocks and wagon tipper sheds at coal terminals is an important matter but quite difficult to solve. Anchors can be used to join floors to foundations thus ensuring the stability of floors by the self-weight of floors and the pull of anchors. In this paper, the author describes the structures and types of the anchors used in the floors of the drydock in Beihai Shipyard and the wagon tipper shed at Shijiu Port, both in Shandong Province China, the determination of bearing capacity of anchors in rock bed of highly weathered granite, the comparison between prestressed anchors and non-prestressed anchors, the construction technology of anchors and the analysis of field experimental data.

Two new inorganic-organic hybrid polymers, Al(OH)3-polyacrylamide (Al(OH)3-PAM) and Mg(OH)2-polyacrylamide (Mg(OH)2-PAM) were synthesized and successfully applied for the treatment of oil sand tailings. The results indicate that both Mg(OH)2-PAM and Al(OH)3-PAM were unaffected by the change in pH, and could be applied to oil sand tailings with varying sand-to-fine ratio (SFR). The optimum dosages for the Mg(OH)2-PAM and Al(OH)3-PAM were about 330 g/ton and 650 g/ton, respectively for SFR 3.75. The flocculated oil sand tailings dewater quickly producing 66-68% solids. The flocculated tailings produced similar filtration rate before and after shear. Mg(OH)2-PAM treated oil sand tailings produced twice the filtration rates (220 ml/min) compared with Al(OH)3-PAM. This study clearly indicates that Mg(OH)2-PAM and Al(OH)3-PAM is a viable solution while decreasing the mass-production of tailings and increasing the rate of water-recycle.

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. "In recent years, the mining industry has been inundated with new technologies and software systems to aid in productivity improvement. Accompanying this increased level of technology and computer systems has been the exponential growth in data sources and sinks for all aspects of a mining operation. This rapid growth in data and technology has evolved through vendor “push” approaches and user “pull” scenarios, the result of which has been that currently, no standards exist defining how data from new technology should be accessed and transferred from surface mining equipment and systems. Consequently, many incremental benefits of the systems have not been realized. This paper will present a discussion of this important issue and introduce a new committee formed to address standards to assist the industry in making effective use of current and future technology. Potential benefits accruing from the development of these standards will be illustrated through the use of a case study at Fording Coal Limited. IntroductionThe mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in the computing-based systems capabilities of mobile production equipment. At the same time, there is a trend toward the introduction of even larger machines, with novel designs or incorporation of new technologies within existing designs. Computing and control technology will be required to operate and acquire knowledge about equipment operation, utilization, and performance. Such knowledge has the potential to lead to enhanced equipment design, more appropriate equipment selection, and optimized equipment performance. The equipment systems will be required to be integrated with mine production monitoring systems, maintenance management software, and a wealth of other information systems to provide a complete understanding of the effects of various factors such as maintenance, equipment design and production on economics (Roman and Daneshmend, 2001). This will lead to a better understanding and implementation of the opportunities to enhance the performance of the mine through interaction of the mine operations."

This paper presents a case history on mitigating vibration problems associated with the installation of steel sheetpiles. The project in-cludes installation of steel sheetpiles for a utility trench within 40 feet (12.2 meters) of a very sensitive manufacturing facility. Numerous production line quality control instruments and manufacturing processes within the manufacturing facility are extremely sensitive to vibrations. To minimize the impact to the owner, we specified that the contractor perform a vibration study using different types of pile hammers. The results and conclusions of the vibration study are presented in this paper.

"New tax rules that can apply to the repayment, extinguishment, or other settlement of a company's debt are finally taking shape. These new rules are far-reaching in their application, and can affect mining companies in a serious, negative way.IntroductionIn his February 1994 budget, Finance Minister Paul Martin announced changes to the Income Tax Act that could have an adverse impact on a company that restructures its debt. Since then, the new rules have undergone considerable transformation during their fetal stage: draft legislation was introduced in July 1994; revised draft legislation was introduced December 1994; and a third version of draft legislation was introduced February 1995. It seems that the new rules have now been pretty well finalized, and they contain some serious traps that the unwary could fall into. The new rules are of particular importance to mining companies, because a mining company's resource pools will be caught under the new rules, whereas these pools escaped the wrath of the old rules. The following commentary summarizes the new rules that are generally referred to as the ""debt forgiveness"" rules."
