Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

?It is in the interest of stability and investor confidence that the healthy and necessary debate on such a (minerals) policy should soon find its way to consensus.? (President Nelson Mandela at the104th (1995), AGM of the South African Chamber of Mines) Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa initiated a dynamic period in the historical development of its minerals policy. The process of substituting the current South African mineral policy framework with an acceptable ?post apartheid? system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) government. The Green Paper on a Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa released for public discussion in February 1998, calls for radical transformation in mineral rights ownership. A shift towards exclusive state ownership of mineral rights, away from the present dual system of private and state ownership, is the most significant proposal. The current holders of mineral rights, or their nominees, who lawfully enjoyed security of tenure under past and present mineral laws are opposed to this transformation because mineral rights were often acquired at considerable cost. The situation is compounded by poor public record-keeping and passive mineral rights administration over a very long period. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current legislative environment and forms the basis for any discussion on which future sculpturing of South Africa?s policy regarding mineral rights can take place. A Paradigm Shift As market economists, mine managers are interested in "staying in business" and even "prospering." Bottom-line results are the "order of the day." Concern for bottom-line results invokes questions such as: How much was produced? At what cost? And, was anyone injured? While these questions will always carry everyday emphasis at the mine, they are fundamentally lacking in that they often appear, especially to lower levels of management and to the production worker, as preeminent concerns. Driven by market economics, many organizations have decentralized, outsourced, downsized, restructured, and formed new coalitions. Investments in new technology and concentration on productivity have been part and parcel with these changes, contributing to improvements in both safety and efficiency. A reason for (and, perhaps a result of) these improvements has been the development of a highly experienced and flexible work force. These changes in mining present an interesting opportunity to modify a few paradigms about work life in general, and perhaps a few paradigms about how we invest in the miner, in particular. Studying these issues now might offer some interesting opportunities for the future, as the foundations for the next generation of mine workers are laid. With the average "experienced" U.S. miner five to fifteen years from retirement, perhaps a key determinant of future success in the world market might be how well we make the transition from today's work force to the work force of tomorrow. We can ill afford to wait a few more years to tap into the special knowledge residing within a veteran mining work force. The WCPM work Crew Performance Model, see pp. ) is one approach to defining, capturing, and transferring this expertise.

Recycling is generally a more sustainable alternative to landfilling. Its financial costs however, do not always justify its practice, especially in the short term. As a result, even for precious metals such as platinum, significant amounts can end up unrecovered. In considering risks of materials scarcity for firms that require platinum and platinum products, this paper examines how recycling provides additional benefits as a risk-mitigating strategy against scarcity. The experimental platform for this examination is a System Dynamics simulation model that strives to capture the dynamics of platinum market supply, demand and price. The detailed structures of supply and demand are key features of the model. Results show that since the secondary supply of platinum depends on a supply chain separate from primary extraction, recycling can diversify the risks of primary supply instabilities and reduce the impact of price fluctuations upon firms.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Introduction The February and April 1984 issues of MINING ENGINEERING have already provided introduction to the long-range planning efforts of the Society of Mining Engineers (SME). These efforts are intended to provide the basis for effectively maintaining and improving the Society in the face of the changes that are besetting the mineral industry. This requires that SME recognize what changes are occurring and determine how these will impact the membership. Then a plan must be developed and implemented so that the Society successfully meets the challenges of the next decade. The Board of Directors has charged the Long Range Planning Commission with the responsibility for meeting these goals. This article provides a summary of the work done by the Management and Organization Committee of the Long-Range Planning Commission. This committee's task was to analyze the Society's current organizational structure and management process. Then a set of recommended improvements was to be developed. In doing this, the Committee has been careful to operate under that popular axiom, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Thus, changes were not proposed simply for the sake of change, but only where the present system appeared to be less effective than desired. Bases For Action The Committee began by establishing a set of premises about SME and its membership. These premises provided the bases for subsequent actions and recommendations by the Committee. Highlights from the premises included: • The Society should be run on a business-like basis. However, its "business" is that of a not-for-profit scientific, technical, and educational public institution. SME enables professionals involved in or associated with the mineral industry to serve the public purpose of benefitting mankind. • The Society operates as a national (US) organization with transnational (worldwide) interests. It recognizes its obligation to make its goods and services available to minerals professionals throughout the world. In addition, the Society recognizes its obligation to translate technology for the "lay" public, who then also become users of its goods and services. • The Society's Board of Directors is the policy-making body of SME and has final approval of all programs. These responsibilities will become greater when the Society becomes a separate corporation. • At present, the Society provides the following goods and services: publications, meetings/programming/short courses, academic education support, information dissemination - internal and external, and individual member services. • Planning is an ongoing process. It is best performed on a decentralized basis. That is, each major service category should have a responsible group authorized to conduct planning for that category, subject to the Society's master plan and the Board's approval. • The Society is privileged to have highly qualified and motivated members who volunteer their time and efforts on behalf of the Society. The best of these volunteers should rise to the highest positions of leadership - the Presidency of the Society and Institute (AIME). • The Sooiety is strongly committed to the protection and promotion of the history, traditions, and identity of AIME and the use of AIME as the unifying forum for the Constituent Societies. Identification of Potential Problems Once the premises about the Society and its membership were well in hand, the committee began examining the many facets of SME's organizational structure and management process. This was done in order to identify problems or potential problems in these areas. After considerable review and discussion, 10 areas of potential concern were called out for more detailed study and possible recommendations for improvement. These 10 areas include: • A lack of continuity at the Board level and among officers due to the established turnover policy. • A series of subboards that serve, by practice, to diffuse management authority and accountability, rather than enhance it. • A question as to whether the dissemination of information has been adequately planned, organized, and staffed. • An apparent illogical divisional organization. Two divisions are discipline oriented and two are commodity oriented. • A regional organization that does not adequately fulfill its purposes. • Uncertainties about the per-

The combination of digital technology and on line spectroscopy enables the development of intelligent instruments for composition and particle size analyses in real- time high- frequency control conditions. In many industries, the applications result in productivity improvement and energy savings. Plant specific examples include operating experience and benefits realized in sorting, blending and beneficiation processes. Instruments of the future not only measure specific parameters of the process and monitor its own health combined with self-corrective mechanics but also acts with intelligence to effect the quality of the process or regulate the primary apparatus.

The roasting and gas handling circuits at Goldstrikes' new Roasting Facility incorporate proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available unit operations from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs. The roaster utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas. This process was chosen based on its proven application on Carlin-type carbonaceous ores. An extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster and comprises direct cooling, dust scrubbing, indirect cooling, wet electrostatic precipitation, mercury scrubbing, SO2 scrubbing, CO incineration and NOX reduction.

Breaks in coal slurry impoundments can threaten the lives and health of area residents, destroy homes and businesses and contaminate water supplies. This dangerous potential looms over coalmining regions in West Virginia and throughout Appalachia. The Coal Impoundment Project was begun in June 2003 to provide an inventory and mapping of active and abandoned impoundments in West Virginia. The project also provides the public with specific information about the impoundments in their communities. It is dedicated to alerting residents of danger and evacuation plans, reducing risk to residents and finding alternatives to impoundments. Since its first year, more than 100 impoundment sites have been added to the project’s Website.

In 2006, a total of 4,573 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 30.7% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,042; 44.7%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=368; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=342; 7.5%).

Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel's at the University of Toronto and Bliel's at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. This report and associated deliverables is the culmination of a comprehensive literature survey, data collection and identification of over 500 metal/nonmetal active mines/mills/smelters (over 50,000 tons per year, TPY, production) in the contiguous 48 states. The main purpose was to compile an inventory of the mine/ mill/smelter waste tonnages, thus forming a data base for future research and development in improving waste management and waste disposal techniques in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. The study specifically excluded sand and gravel, sulfur, granite and any commodity that leaves basically no waste when mined and/or milled. The coal waste inventory is the subject of another report. The study provided for locating, mapping. encodating and digitizing all the mine/mill/smelter information made available throughout the nation as well as the climatological, land use, topographical, ecological and vegetative data. Mine/mill/smelter information also included (where possible) acreage and/or volume, mining methods, primary ore and gangue minerals, waste composition and haulage methods and distance hauled. Finally, a discussion is provided concerning present and potential uses of various types of tailings, as well 8S recommending possible R&D in addressing problem areas in waste disposal techniques and management.

The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. The conditions of a stability of metallurgical films on a surface of solid on the basis of classical regularities of a thermodynamics are considered. For specific conditions of metallurgical processes the basic equations relevant to non-metallic inclusions (product of steel killing) migration and transfer through the interface boundary of metal-slag are obtained. The basic criteria equations of conditions of stability of metallurgical dispersed systems are developed in view of films formation. The probable thermodynamics reason of wetting due to formation of stable films are discussed. The experimental measurement of thin and thick films elastic resistance for metallurgical systems are carried out and the results are discussed. The presence of a wetting thick film increases stability of dispersed systems (facilitates an inverse implication of non-metallic inclusion in a melt) due to a barrier effect of wetting films. The quantitative evaluations of non-metal inclusion stability for steel in contact with any metallurgical slag are carried out. The results are in accordance with technological experience. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the extraction of alumina from domestic kaolin clay by leaching with boiling 26 wt-pct hydrochloric acid. Acid leaching of crushed calcined kaolin feed yields slurries that are slow settling and difficult to filter because of the presence of fine particles generated in crushing, calcining, and leaching. Laboratory research showed that tumbling and moistening crushed raw kaolin on a pelletizing disk caused the fines to agglomerate on the surfaces of the larger particles, while the sharp edges and corners of the larger particles were rounded off. Minus 16-mesh crushed raw kaolin was misted on a 36-in-diam, 8-in-deep pelletizing disk at rates of 175 to 250 lb/hr, and was calcined in either a rotary or a fluidized-bed calciner; negligible degradation occurred. The physical properties of the misted calcined kaolin were evaluated in the leaching system of the clay-hydrochloric acid miniplant. Only minor attrition occurred during leaching, and the slurry was readily filtered on a continuous belt filter.

The COALSTAR Project, which operated from November 1981 to December 1982, was a research and development project aimed at providing a reliable and inexpensive means of monitoring various waste site conditions via the GOES satellite system. The GOES system provides data transfer from unattended isolated sites where neither power nor telephone lines exist. The reliability and resolution of the data received while using the satellite link were excellent; however, the site instrumentation gave considerable trouble. The disastrous failure of a large coal waste embankment in 1972 led the Bureau of Mines to undertake a comprehensive program to reduce the likelihood of such an occurence again. Part of this program involved the installation of instruments to monitor the stability of a specially-selected embankment operated by Armco Incorporated near Montcoal, West Virginia. Initially, the instruments were monitored by normal telephone lines and used normal commercial power from the local utility. The project described here was initiated to replace this monitoring system with an unmanned, solar-powered data collection system which transmitted data via satellite to a central computer facility. The satellite data network is the National Earth Satellite Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

Potassium, lithium, strontium, barium, and manganese are present in many oilfield brines, None of them except barium is determined routinely in brine analyses. Therefore, sensitive and accurate flame-spectrophotometric methods were developed. Potassium, lithium, and strontium were determined by a standard-addition technique in ethyl alcohol solutions. Barium and manganese were determined in ethyl alcohol and normal propyl solutions, respectively, after interfering substances were removed.

Since its creation in 1950, the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches des Charbonnages de France at Verneuil-en-Halatte (Oise) has been conducting many investigations concerned with airborne dust measurements, particularly in underground mines. The work has resulted in the development, a few years ago, of a new process of dust sampling, whereby the airborne dust particles are collected by a rotary filter of polyurethane foam rotating at high speed within 8 housing.
