Deposits of the metalloids arsenic and antimony occur in quartz veins of mesothermal hydrothermalsystems in the South Island as arsenopyrite (AsFeS) and stibnite (Sb2S3). Arsenopyrite and stibnite occur in natural exposures in gold-mining areas, and additional arsenopyrite and stibnite have been exposed to the atmosphere by mining activity. At present the drinking water limits for dissolved As and Sb are 10 ppb and 3 ppb respectively. Sampling and analysis techniques are critical to determination of metalloid concentrations at these low levels. Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds is an historic mining area (late 19th Century) with elevated As and Sb in waters emanating from mineralised rocks. Waters running out of abandoned adits have concentrations of As and/or Sb up to ppm levels. Natural waters have high Sb and low As, and the As levels increase markedly where anthropogenic activity has exposed rock. Changes in Sb/As ratio could potentially be used to quantify the anthropogenic component of metalloid mobility on mine sites on the 100-year time scale.

Some 50 miles of tunnel have been driven in the Snowy Mountains Area since tunnelling commenced in 1951. Hates have improved progressively due to the know-how of American supervision and use of large matched equipment of modern design.The work has been carried out by contractors, working almost exclusively under schedule of rates contracts. The Authority has maintained active research into tunnelling problems, especially that of support, and this has resulted in considerable economies and improved rates of progress. The contractors also have sought economies both by management and equipment techniques. Ammonium nitrate came into favour as an explosive essentially because of its lower cost, and handling techniques have improved progressively. Rock conditions preclude use of the "Mole" type equipment in its present stage of development, but one contractor introduced the "sliding floor" and this could exert a great influence on future tunnelling methods.Examination of tunnels that have been in service for some time confirmed the quality of the work and endorsed the policy of continued research and development.GENEHALThe Snowy Mountains Scheme provides for the diversion of the Snowy and Eucumbene waters through two transmountain tunnels to the western river systems. These diversions, together with additional regulations provided for waters already flowing inland, will provide an average additional discharge of 1,818,000 ac it per year for irrigation.Furthermore, approximately 6,000 million kWh of electrical energy will be generated annually in power stations with a total installed capacity of some 3,000,000 kW (Fig. 1.).INVESTIGATIONThe aim of investigation work is firstly to collect sufficient information to allow the overall scheme to be planned and then to follow up with detailed information on eachproject. The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

A key point in the manufacture of cemented backfill is the dewatering and settlement of the total tailings product. A new technology characterized by rapid non-mechanical settlement of total tailings has been developed based on a large number of laboratory and field tests, where dynamic settlement and continual slurry preparation of total tailings in a vertical sand silo are realized by the addition of an effective flocculating agent named NPA. It has been shown that the sedimentation velocity of the interface between total tailings and water after NPA was added is 10 to 20 times higher than that without any flocculating agent, that the mass fraction of sand slurry deposited at the bottom of the vertical sand silo reaches 70%, and that the solid particle content in effluent waste water meets national water quality standards. The simple devices used to add flocculants have little deleterious effects on the current preparation tank and have been tested in an industrial environment. The processing cost of total tailings by the new technology is only 10% to 20% of that required for mechanical settlement.

Drag bit cutting tests were conducted chiefly to determine bit forces encountered in rock types representing a range of compressive strength and hardness and thus enable the design engineer to estimate a continuous miner's performance in a range of rock types. Testing was carried out on the Bureau of Mines uniquely designed, instrumented rock cutting device (RCD). This device can make 3-ft-long cuts at various depths and speeds to approximate full-scale drag bit cutting by continuous miners. Point attack and cutter bits were tested on four rock types ranging in compressive strength from 7,200 psi (trona) to 29,600 psi (Valders white rock). Cutting tests were made at depths up to 1 in and speeds up to 70 in/sec. Data included normal and cutting forces, groove depth, groove width, and weight of rock broken. The effect of varying the cutting speed was determined, and specific energies were calculated for the various conditions. The bit wear was also observed. For the rocks tested, compressive strength and hardness are good indicators of forces, specific energy, and wear encountered. Results, especially bit wear observations, show the possibility of extending continuous miners, already being used in trona, to Indiana limestone (10,000 psi). Rapid bit deterioration precludes use in Tennessee marble (16,800 psi) and Valders white rock (29,600 psi).

Pneumatic flotation is rapidly becoming accepted in the main stream of flotation techniques. Imhoflot is a pneumatic flotation process that in recent years has undergone progressive development. It combines short flotation times with excellent selectivity by employing intense pre-aeration and dispersion. K+S GmbH (K+S), Germany, has installed a complete Imhoflot flotation plant at its Sigmundshall plant. The plant treats hard salt consisting of sylvine, halite, anhydrite and kieserite. The reason for selection was that Imhoflot achieves the required grades of plus 60 weight percent K2O whilst offering lower operating costs than conventional flotation installations.

During the mining of an open stope, deformation of the hanging-wall and the potential for dilution generally increase with the size of the exposed hanging-wall. Excluding discrete structures that may delineate unstable blocks, the mechanisms that drive hanging-wall deformation and possible dilution comprise several factors which can include elastic, plastic and discontinuum deformation. These stages of deformation are not mutually exclusive and at any point during mining all three of these mechanisms may be acting on the hanging-wall rock mass. Computer modelling techniques are available to analyse the three stages of deformation, but the difficulty lies in trying to obtain realistic rock mass properties for input and in determining when each stage of deformation is acting. Instrumentation data can be used to predict the effect of continued mining. However, it is often difficult to calibrate numerical models against field data owing to the large number of input parameters required. An empirical approach is recommended that uses two new parameters, the radius factor and the effective radius factor. A method is proposed for predicting the effect of continued mining from existing deformation and dilution data for a given hanging-wall

Studies on more efficient utilization of petroleum have been made for 50 years by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this work, the Bureau has analyzed thousands of samples of crude oil by its standardized routine method, and many of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published from 1921 to 1959, and brings up to date the information in Information Circular 7470 3 and in the appendix of Bulletin 490.4 The routine method of analysis and the equipment originally were described in a report by Dean and associates. 5 This report has long been out of print, but Bulletin 490, bringing the procedure and its modifications to date, was published in 1951. 6 Briefly, the procedure consists of testing, by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, viscosity, pour point, and (more recently) nitrogen; and, by a standardized procedure, distilling a portion of the crude oil and determining certain properties on the separated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the procedure, and the distillation data obtained are used to compute the approximate amounts of products present in the sample--such as percentages of gasoline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The principal data and results are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of crude oil from a recently developed field is shown in table 1. Compilations of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses often are included in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

In the county of Campos dos Goytacazes, north of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, there is a large production of red ceramic, mainly perforated bricks. A percentage of these bricks are damaged during the firing processing and become a red ceramic waste. This work investigates a possible solution to this environmental problem through the mixture of fired brick wastes, up to 20 wt.%, with clay bodies to produce red ceramics. Cylindrical pressed bodies were fired at temperatures varying from 500 to 1100ºC. After firing, samples were then tested for linear shrinkage, water absorption and mechanical strength. The results showed that brick waste addition did not changed the workability of the clay and that up to 5 wt.% of waste no detrimental effect occurred on the fired properties at all temperatures.

Why does a continuous casting mould powder, which works successfully on a particular caster with respect to semi quality, fail to perform on a caster of a similar design utilizing liquid steel from a similar route for an identical product without some tuning of its make-up and composition? In casting sequences of the same steel grade, why do some apparent random heats produce poor surface quality with respect to cracking when otherwise good surface quality is realized? The answer to these questions lies in the interaction of the mould powder, the casting hardware, and the casting process variables. Using, as examples, data collected from within Corus UK and during collaborative work on the assessment of mould powder performance and its effects on surface quality, the interaction of the mould powder, the casting hardware and the casting process variables is explored. The steelmaking route and its associated alumina load, unexpected changes to slag chemistry, infiltration of the slag into the mould strand gap, and the nature of the slag film are all shown to affect powder performance. The Aynak copper deposit, located 30 km south of Kabul in Afghanistan (Figure 1), was discovered by Soviet geologists in the 1970s. Extensive exploration undertaken in the area between 1974-80 included several hundred boreholes, seventy trenches and nine exploratory adits. This work identified a “drill-indicated resource” of 240 Mt at 2.3% Cu (ESCAP, 1995).
