The reef is a PGE-enriched sulphidic zone, stratigraphically associated with and overlapping the C1d chromitite layer, that was formed by magmatic processes at the 1e-1d subunit boundary. There has been disappointingly little development in the analysis of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. A brief review of literature shows that the application of numerical stress analysis methods to open pit mine slope stability has become only relatively common in recent times, and that there are as yet no standardized approaches. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardized approaches in particular, is surprising in view of the ?ultra? deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. In this paper, the results of a substantial programme of two dimensional and axisymmetric analyses of open pit slopes are described. Variations in the following parameters were taken into account in this programme: slope angle, slope height and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratio. The evaluation of the data has concentrated on the tensile stresses and the extension strains in the slopes. This is believed to be the first publication dealing with strain distributions in slopes. The occurrence of zones of tensile stress was very limited. These zones occur in the crests of slopes, except in the case of low horizontal to vertical stress ratios, in which case the tensile zone is in the floor of the pit. In contrast, very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. The large zone in which such extension failure could potentially occur in a 1200 m deep pit is typically more than 100 m horizontally behind the toe and about 400 m up the face from the toe. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning. Such ?strain bursting? produces easily measurable seismicity, events often being audible as well. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. With suitably orientated joints, extension strains are likely to manifest themselves in the opening up of such joints and hence in the loosening of the rock mass in a preferential orientation, with potential effects on groundwater flow patterns.

New ZealandÆs share of global greenhouse gas emissions, at about one fifth of one per cent, is very small. But the profile of those emissions is unique among OECD countries; more than half come from methane and nitrous oxide associated with livestock agriculture. Consequently, fulfilling its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol is potentially quite onerous for New Zealand.In this paper we use a single region, static general equilibrium model to assess the implications for New Zealand of various climate change policy options. The energy and agriculture sectors are modeled in a detailed manner to enable realistic simulations to be carried out.Choosing an optimal set of policies is made more difficult by the fact that New Zealand relies heavily on emission intensive sectors for much of its export earnings. For example, one emission intensive sector alone, dairy, accounts for over 20 per cent of all merchandise exports. Avoiding carbon leakage is therefore an important consideration in selecting appropriate greenhouse policies.Our analysis shows the degree of sectoral adjustment required is substantial. In addition, the total costs depend on the uncertain level of variables such as the global carbon price and the level of afforestation activities in New Zealand, ie the rate of new forest planting.

Subsurface disposal of oil-field brines was practiced in Oklahoma on a limited scale as early as 1925. The technique of subsurface injection has been improved immensely and has been applied with varying success in many oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, and elsewhere. This method of disposal, however, is only one of several methods available to operators of oil-producing properties, but, in contrast with usual methods of handling brines on the surface it eliminates the damaging effect of mineralized water on fresh-water supplies, vegetation, and aquatic and other animal life. Other methods of brine disposal approved by regulatory agencies in some States include (1) impounding in impervious ponds and solar evaporation, (2) controlled diversion into surface waters, and (3) recovery of the mineral salts of the brine. In most States where oil is produced regulatory bodies authorize the use of one or more of these methods of brine disposal. In Oklahoma, for example, the .Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board of the Conservation Commission has been authorized4/ to adopt whatever methods or means may be necessary to prevent contamination by mineralization of all potable waters within the State.

To determine the retorting characteristics of a column of mine-run, ungraded oil shale ranging in size from fines to 5-ton pieces, a 150-ton batch-type retort was designed and constructed at the Bureau of Mines Laramie Energy Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The retort vessel is 45 feet high by 11 ½ feet inside diameter, and is supported in a 95-foot-high steel superstructure. Mine-run shale from the Bureau of Mines facility near Rifle, Colo., assaying about 25 gallons of oil per ton, was used as the test shale. To date, 11 runs have been completed, and the results of the last 10 of these are reported. The effects of oxygen content of the retorting gas and the superficial gas velocity of the retorting gas on oil recovery from a column of mine-run oil shale were studied. In one run, the average particle size of the shale was substantially increased to determine its effect on oil yield. Oil recoveries ranged from a low of 39.3 to a high of 65.8 volume-percent of Fischer assay.

INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

Moderate to acute deficiency of plant available phosphorus is very common in western coal mine spoils and topsoils. Although some of the spoils are known to contain seemingly adequate amounts of total phosphorus, the plant available phosphorus is so low that it constitutes a serious plant growth limiting factor in the mined lands. For the revegetation of these spoils, the use of species, varieties and ecotypes exhibiting greater efficiency for P uptake and utilization, or conversely, lesser susceptibility to P deficiency would be highly desirable. To identify such plants, quick and adequate methods of screening germplasm should he available. In the present growth chamber study several plant species were screened using continuous flow culture and spoil culture systems to provide information on their relative susceptibility. In flow cultures, P was maintained at 0.25, 2.5, and 25 moles; while in spoil cultures it was applied at 0, 25, and 75µg/g to a P-deficient spoil. Phosphorus deficiency symptoms appeared in alfalfa cultivars, birdsfoot trefoil, emerald crownvetch and yellow sweetclover within 7-10 days upon transfer of their seedlings to U.25 or 2.5 µM P solutions. Burning bush and Russian thistle, found abundantly as pioneering species on mine spoils, showed no deficiency symptoms; their shoot dry matter yield in the 0.25µM P treatment was 24% and 36%, respectively of their maximum yield obtained with 25 µM P. However, the percent increase in the dry matter yield of legumes with 0.25 µM P ranged from 7-13% over their maximum yield. With the increase in solution P concentration, the root dry weight ratio in the legumes increased from an average of 0.22 to 0.43, while in the weeds from 0.14 to 0.30. The low susceptibility of Russian thistle to P deficiency was also demonstrated in the spoil culture experiment. Legumes showed greater response to P-fertilization on the spoil than did the two weeds. With increasing concentrations of P in the solution, the root weight ratio of all the species decreased. At 25 µM P, weeds invested only 14% of their total dry matter yield in the root fraction, where as legumes and grasses invested as much as 24% and 33% respectively. Weedy species averaged higher P concentrations than the legumes and grasses. The mean P concentrations of alfalfa cultivars were the lowest among legumes. In general, P concentrations increased with the increase in P supply. In the flow culture system, P supply increased the Ca levels of legumes. The mean Mn concentrations were highest in the weedy species. The increases in P supply decreased Zn levels in all of the species. File effects of P fertilization on the tissue concentrations of Mn and Zn in spoil culture were similar to that of flow culture system. From this preliminary study, it may be concluded that the continuous flow culture system is efficient in rapid screening of a large number of species under controlled conditions for their efficiency in adapting to mineral stresses.

Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

The Waihi-Waitekauri region hosts numerous low-sulfidation epithermal deposits that both outcrop and occur at depth. Zones of intense hydrothermal alteration enclose the Au-Ag bearing quartz vein deposits. Hydrothermal alteration includes the destruction of magnetite by hydrothermal fluids, pervasive silicification adjacent to quartz lodes and potassium enrichment due to adularia and illite deposition. High-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric, and new gravity data delineate distinct geophysical anomalies associated with hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation. Five magnetically quiet zones occur in the region varying in size from 3 to 34 km2 and in geometry from circular to irregular zones. These zones represent the near-surface extent of strong to intense hydrothermal alteration associated with fossil geothermal systems. All epithermal deposits in the region occur in magnetically quiet zones. Over 120 new gravity stations together with existing data across the Waihi district have defined a positive Bouguer gravity anomaly coincident with the magnetically quiet zone. Eastern and western gradients of 50 gu/km bound the anomaly that contains two flat gravity highs west and east of the Waihi deposit. Strong potassium signatures in airborne radiometric data correlate with outcropping zones of alteration and are consistent with the presence of adularia and illite minerals. Hydrothermally altered zones are represented by areas of low Th/K ratios as a result of low thorium concentrations in andesite and elevated potassium levels in altered zones.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng.) Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Small and large welded aluminium specimens were tested in fatigue and the results compared with design curves for aluminium in specification BS8118. Metallurgical tests were also performed on the specimens in order to correlate microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. The small-scale fatigue test results were in reasonable agreement with results in BS8118, whereas the large-scale fatigue tests showed that BS8118 is conservative.

The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.

The early part of the decade was marked by world-wide problems and economic difficulties. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter ordered the failed military mission to rescue hostages in the U.S. Embassy in Iran, Mt. Saint Helens, WA erupted killing 60 people and the Soviets and Mujaheddin guerrillas clashed in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion. Later in the year, Ronald Reagan was elected president, defeating Carter. The first launch of a space shuttle (Columbia) occurred in 1981. Also in 1981, the first IBM-PC’s begin to roll off the lines. In 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and Mexico’s economy was in collapse. In 1980, the U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.1 percent, and by 1982 the rate increased to 9.7 percent. 1980 marked SME’s first full year in its new office building in Littleton, CO. The new facility was dedicated in November 1979. Claude L. Crowley was executive director of SME in 1980 and remained in that position throughout the decade. SME’s membership stood at about 26,000 throughout this period (1980-1982).

The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. A correct interpretation and understanding of the causes of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits would shed much light on the origin of these deposits.In Table 1 a simplified paragenetic series for sulphide minerals is presented. "The pursuit of concentrator surveying for purposes of metal accounting or process optimization has not yet connected with the well-published realm of geostatistics. The reality of lognormality in time has seldom been discussed. One publication by Krige, 1962, examined such effects for a gold concentrator in South Africa, towards an information system that would provide feedback to the mining and surveying teams on grade control of ore mined.During present studies which are designing and testing a new survey model, called statistical benchmark surveying, it was found that the distributions of feed, concentrate and tailings bear significant residual signs of the parent lognormality in space. The multiple hosting of paymetals in different mineral species complicates the understanding of these distributions. These features have to be recognized and treated in order to perform appropriate quality control on the diagnostic sampling performed in the pursuit of statistical benchmark surveying.It is shown in this paper that the above two features can actually be used to advantage in the diagnosis of continuous periods of operations data ahead of such surveying, including the estimation of recoverable paymetals in flotation tailings from a graphical method.INTRODUCTIONAssessment of Concentrator PerformanceMilling and flotation, sometimes accompanied by gravity separation, are well-established unit processes, which have traditionally been used to treat ore that has been mined. This is because these processes liberate, then separate, the valuable minerals, which contain paymetals, from host gangue. This is often done by a combination of crushing and grinding processes, or autogenous grinding, to liberate the paymetal minerals, followed by gravity separation and/or flotation, to separate these valuable minerals into a concentrate, or several concentrates. These concentrate(s) have a lower bulk than the parent ore from which they are derived. Further, they contain a high percentage of the valuable minerals. Accordingly, they are more economically treated in subsequent beneficiation processes than the ore from which they were produced."

Information on the performance of coal-cleaning equipment is necessary to provide a basis for evaluating the performance of existing plants and projecting that of new plants. Performance data can contribute greatly to the wise selection and effective use of coal-washing equipment. The Bureau of Mines has published information on the performance of several commercial plants, as well as of some laboratory-scale equipment, 5 (2-9, 11, 12, 17-12, 21-25) from time to time for a number of years. A more intensive program to provide such information for all the principal types of cleaning equipment is underway. The present evaluation of table performance is part of this program.

In This Chapter [Drill dust control: wet and dry Enclosed cabs on drills and mobile equipment Haul road dust control] Overburden drilling generates most of the respirable dust that affects workers at surface mines. Both wet and dry methods are available to reduce this drill dust. Overburden removal by mobile excavation equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, and haulage trucks can be dusty, particularly under dry and windy conditions. Tightly enclosed cabs with dust filtration systems can substantially lower the dust exposure of both drill and mobile equipment operators. Haul road dust control can be achieved by water application or chemical application. DRILL DUST CONTROL [Drill dust is controlled with wet or dry systems. Wet systems can be more efficient, but may freeze in the winter. Dry systems require careful maintenance of the drill deck shroud. An improved deck shroud is shown.] Wet Suppression. Wet drilling systems pump water into the bailing air from a water tank mounted on the drill. The water droplets in the bailing air trap dust particles as they travel up the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole [Page 1991]. In wet drilling systems, typical water flow rates are 0.1 to 2.0 gpm depending on the size and type of drill and the moisture level of the overburden. The drill operator controls the flow using a control valve located in the cab. Some drills are equipped with a flow meter to give the opera-tor a visual sign of the flow rate. Raising the water flow will improve dust capture, but too much water causes operational problems. Because of this, the drill operator must exercise care in find-ing the best water flow rate.

This paper discusses the methods used in the design of flotation plants, including benchscale batch and locked cycle tests and pilot plant trials. Two case studies are presented, one for the Cadia Hill Gold Mine and the other for the Hellyer copper, zinc and lead plant. These case studies present different problems with widely different target grind sizes, liberation characteristics and HellyerÆs sequential flotation circuit versus CadiaÆs æsimpleÆ copper/gold flotation circuit. They have a common theme in that pyrite forms the principal floatable concentrate diluent. Hellyer ore contains finely disseminated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite. The flotation plant design was based on extensive benchscale testwork (including locked cycle tests) on drill core and many months of operation of a 30 tonne per hour æpilot plantÆ, using the old Cleveland Tin Mine process plant suitably modified for the duty. The Cadia concentrator was designed on an extensive benchscale variability testwork program, approximately a dozen locked cycle tests conducted on drill core and two weeks of continuous pilot plant trials on three separate samples obtained from an adit into the orebody. The orebody is a monzonite porphyry with disseminated chalcopyrite/bornite/pyrite of very low grade (0.17 per cent Cu, 0.73 g/t Au). Methods used to establish the appropriate flotation circuits for the treatment of the Hellyer and Cadia ores, as well as the interpretation of the testwork data, are discussed in this paper. Plant performance is reviewed in the context of predicted versus operational performance.

The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow inby the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.
