The search for precious metals opened up the American West. And Nevada was right in the heart of this development. In the mid-19th century, prospectors seeking gold roamed the hills of Nevada and discovered the ComstockLode. The development of this huge silver and gold deposit began in1859 and was responsible for Nevada’s early entry to statehood. Mining was Nevada’s first industry. In more recent years, the Nevada mining industry has led the nation in gold, silver and barite production. Nevada also produces many other minerals. These include aggregates, clays, copper, diatomite, dolomite, gypsum, lime and limestone, lithium and magnesium compounds, perlite, salt and silica. Even today, Nevada’s mining industry continues to be a major economic force in the state. The mining industry has made more than $10 billion in capital investments in Nevada since 1985. And the value of Nevada’s mineral production last year was about $2.7 billion.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various water mediums on desulfurization and deashing of a coal sample using flotation. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a coal sample containing high ash and sulfur contents. The effects of pH, solid concentration, collector amount and frother amount on the flotation were investigated separately in Mediterranean Sea water, Çermik thermal spring water, snow water and tap water. Flotation results indicated that, when comparing the various water mediums, the following order for the ash content was obtained: snow water < Çermik thermal spring water < tap water < the Mediterranean Sea water. For the reduction of total sulfur, the following order was obtained: snow water > Çermik thermal spring water > Mediterranean Sea water > tap water. When snow water was used as a flotation medium, it was found that a concentrate containing 3.01% total sulfur and 27.64% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 57.06% was obtained from a feed containing 7.01% total sulfur and 41.17% ash.

The inductive communication system was developed under this contract for use in the hoist of deep mines. This program was a four phase program with experimental dual frequency equipment resulting from Phase I, emergency single frequency equipment developed under Phase II, and equipment documentation required under Phase III. An additional emergency system was provided under Phase IV.

Properties of coal which are significant in relation to preparation for carbonization and conversion are reviewed, and existing coal preparation technology which has been used for production of cleaned coal of suitable ash content and petrographic composition for carbonisation, pyrolysis, hydrogenation and similar processes is described. Possibilities for application of this technology to some Australian coal seams is examined briefly. It is concluded that further survey work is required related to the optimization of selective crushing and concentrating operations, with the aim of maximizing production of quality products for carbonisation, etc mainly from Australian seams with only moderate coking characteristics.

Introduction MINING IS THE BRANCH OF INDUSTRY involving the exploration and removal of minerals from the earth (figure 1). Mining is one of the oldest and most important endeavors of humankind, because it provides the raw ingredients for most of the material world around us and, like agriculture, is the lifeblood of civilization. The main objective of any type of mining is to remove the valuable material economically and safely with minimum damage to the surrounding environment. The Earth has many natural resources on which we depend that must be mined. Coal, oil, gas, and other mineral fuels are used for heating electricity, and numerous industrial processes. Nonfuel minerals such as iron ore, precious metals, and industrial metals, and nonmetallic materials like sodium and potassium are used in chemical and agricultural applications. Even crushed stone used in road building and other construction projects must be mined. Mining affects our standard of living and impacts almost everything we do. A myriad of items that we use in our homes and offices and for transportation, communications, and national defense all require minerals (figure 2). For example, more than 30 different minerals are needed to make a television or telephone! Table 1 lists several commonly mined materials and some of the end uses in our daily lives.

That electricity is an important and valuable agent, the limit of whose capacity for utilisation is as yet unknown, is a truism; although enormous advances have been made, the possible developments are yet greater. Mining, along with other industries, shares already to a large extent in the practical utilisation of this agent. Electrical engineers have been employed for several years past in developing and applying electricity to all classes of machinery, and for every purpose where power is required and in no instance, that the writer is aware of, has its use been curtailed in favour of any other agency now known, while extensions are continually made. The first modern electric motor was shown at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, and it was used to work a pump through a mile length of cable but it was not before 1878, that an electric motor was put into daily commercial use by Messrs. Chretian and Felix to work a beet sugar hoist. This early plant effected a saving of 40 % as compared with hand work.In 1879, the first Electric Railway was constructed for the Berlin Exhibition, and in the same year, Mr. T. A. Edison was running an experimental line at Menlo Park. The first electric line opened for the public, was constructed by Siemens and Halske, in 1881, at Lichtenfelde, and was 11 miles in length.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micron-range particles that form paste-like, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake-flow control structure that allows expressed liquid from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned back to the liquid pool while maintaining high solids throughput. In order to provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids, and different slurry types), the cake-flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in both solids dryness and solids throughput.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) development continues to take on not only larger diameters, but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar have required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunneling machines that can safely excavate the tunnel in an efficient, cost-effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This article reviews the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied. The world?s growing population and rapidly proceeding urbanization are boosting an enormous demand for new and high-capacity infrastructures to secure the mobility of goods and people. Densely populated areas face the challenge of providing efficient traffic infrastructure such as a modern public transport system. At the same time, the maintenance and modernization of supply and disposal structures for water, sewage, energy and communication are essential. Last but not least, are supra-regional transportation routes such as long distance water diversion schemes. All of these projects are as demanding and are characterized by a tight time schedule. In this context, the demand for efficient tunnels for traffic and utility lines is increasing, as new infrastructures often leads underground because of limited space above ground. Also, tunnels are the obvious choice to cross natural barriers like mountain ranges. To handle the complex and variable geological conditions and other constraints, such as low overburden, high water pressure or long tunnel drives while facing increasing demand of a quick completion of a project, mechanized tunneling sets standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection in traffic tunneling projects as well as in the trenchless construction of utility tunnels. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to master various geological and hydrogeological requirements. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant improvement of the mechanized tunneling process.

At Appin colliery, geological structural analyses and investigations of roof conditions suggest roof failure may be attributed to vectorial stresses acting on underground openings, and inducing movement along inherent discontinuities in the surrounding rocks. Certain complex joint and fracture patterns tend to exhibit the effect of this movement resulting often in local deterioration in natural support.The following conclusions are drawn.1. Roof failure is related to the inherent nature of the roof rocks, the presence of mechanical discontinuities, and the vectorial stresses imposed upon it.2. Roof failure is not necessarily related to the statistically most prominent jointing.3. Colliery development approximately parallel to the direction of the statistically most prominent jointing sometimes results in favourable roof conditions.4. The maximum principal stress is the resultant of those vectorial stresses acting upon a mine opening and may be inferred from roof adjustments to those stresses after mining.5. Statistical analyses of jointing in the mine workings can provide clues to the tectonic force or forces which have been regionally or locally influential.6. There is a probable relationship between mining induced fracturing, jointing, and micro-fractures in quartz grains, within the sediments of the mine roof.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of close-range photogrammetry and subsequent stereo digitizing to obtain data from rock fracture roughness profiles. The photogrammetric process yielded results that were acceptable but somewhat inferior to those obtained by a mechanical profilometer. On the basis of this study, further pursuit of photogrammetry as a data collection method in mining is proposed. Fractal geometry was investigated as a means of measuring the roughness of rock fracture profiles. Four fractal algorithms were used: divider method, modified divider method, box method, and spectral method. A comparison of the methods gave ambiguous results. Brown&apos;s modified divider method provided the best means of obtaining the fractal dimension. Shear strength estimates were obtained using the parameters of the modified divider method and Myers&apos; Z, measure. Because of differences in results when comparing the different ways of obtaining the fractal dimension, future users of fractals in studies of rock fractures are advised to cross-check their results carefully.

"The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in downtown metropolitan San Francisco, California, is supported on a mat foundation. Although the mat foundation of the original museum was designed to accommodate a future expansion, the plans for expansion that developed in 2010 required a larger footprint to accommodate the new space requirements of the museum. The new, larger expansion was designed by lead architect Snohetta. It will be a tall 12-story, steel-framed building occupying an area that was once the eastern part of the existing museum as well as two adjacent and newly acquired parcels.As designed, the expansion includes a 30-foot-deep excavation which is surrounded by adjacent buildings and improvements. Because of variable subsurface conditions at the site, geotechnical challenges included mitigating anticipated differential settlement between the existing and new foundations, preventing overstressing of the existing mat foundation, controlling groundwater to prevent settlement of surrounding improvements, and providing temporary support of adjacent structures during excavation for the new basement.To address several of the geotechnical challenges, soil-cement mixed (SMX) ground improvement was recommended by Treadwell & Rollo. However, during contract negotiations and construction, the specialty contractor proposed using jet grouting as an alternative technique for ground improvement. The jet grouting approach was accepted in principal, but when implemented was only marginally successful. Accordingly, the contractor eventually installed SMX panels using a Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) machine. Because the CSM machine was a late arrival during construction, the contractor was not able to take advantage of the ground-improvement technique to install many of the shoring elements that we had originally recommended (such as the cut-off shoring wall). In the end, SMX panels were installed as ground-improvement beneath the new mat foundation to (1) reduce the potential for liquefaction in clean sand below the groundwater by providing increased rigidity to the soil, (2) reduce the potential for disturbing a weak underlying marsh deposit during construction, and (3) transfer vertical building loads to a layer of underlying dense sand.This paper also discusses the quality control and quality assurance programs that were implemented to check that the ground-improvement techniques used were thorough and complete and provided the required strength to transfer the new foundation loads to the underlying strata."

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20&apos; to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures&apos; represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21&#176; 30&apos; to 23&#176;S and longitudes 117&#176; to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale&apos;s Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A mine production locomotive, the world?s first applied industrial fuelcell vehicle, has been designed and tested in the context of a number of proof-of-concept projects supported by the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, an international consortium of stakeholders dedicated to facilitate the commercialization of fuelcell vehicles. The locomotive?s simple electric-powered motor and controller system was ideal to study a number of requirements related to fuelcell power application: hydrogen power plant operation, underground hydrogen use, risk and regulatory requirements, production performance versus the conventional battery-powered locomotive version under measured duty cycles and production requirements, power plant design improvements for other fuelcell vehicles, and cost-benefit aspects. This article will focus on the design and testing aspects of this project which has led to successful performance demonstrations of the vehicle under surface and underground conditions at two mines. It will also present information on the creation of a safe, reliable and efficient power plant which fulfilled its design objectives, including longer productivity time for a given vehicle fill-up.

In this report, recommendations are made for programs to develop workable techniques to stop or prevent acid mine drainage formation in those underground coal mines where acid production could take place. These recommendations include development of mine closure technology, development of surface water infiltration control procedures, study of the effect of roof collapse on mine water characteristics, evaluation of the long-term effects of flooding underground mines above drainage, investigation of the effectiveness of section sealing in active mines, development of a simple model for predicting mine water quality and quantity, preparation of a manual on mine drainage abatement procedures, and development of a program to disseminate information on mine drainage abatement to the coal industry. These recommendations are based on an in-depth evaluation of information acquired over years of research on acid mine drainage formation, on numerous laboratory and field studies of methods of preventing or minimizing acid mine drainage formation, and on review of the geological, hydrological, and mineralogical factors involved. The 73rd Street Tunnel Project is part of “The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan” (TARP)also known as the Deep Tunnel Project, and is located in the Village of Bedford Park, County of McCook, State of Illinois. The project consists of a ø 4.42 meter × 2,060 meter long (14´-6? bore, 6,760 foot)tunnel. The completed tunnel is used as a bypass tunnel for the McCook Cup Reservoir Project. The project was awarded to Affholder Inc. of St. Louis, in 2000. The paper describes the project in which a new, high-powered open gripper type main beam machine was used in which high advance rates have been achieved using conventional muck haulage techniques. Features of the project include the installation of rock support consisting of counter-sunk rock bolts that are required to be pull-tested for strength per project specifications. Installation and testing of the bolts are done during the boring cycle. Muck haulage was done by conventional muck car train and hoisting at the construction shaft. As the site layout did not include a tail tunnel, the trains needed to be shuttled at the shaft bottom. Even with the bolting requirements and the muck haulage without a tail tunnel, the Affholder site personnel still achieved high advance rates on the 73rd Street Project.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a technique for determining the confining pressures that must be provided for stabilizing underground openings in incompetent rock. The technique is adapted for use with a nonlinear finite-element computer code, NONSAP, to obtain stabilization pressures for linear or nonlinear stress distributions in the rock media around the excavation. This analysis permits a point-wise calculation of active rock pressures that depend on the values of shear stress and strength along the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the solution of several sample problems. The results show that both the magnitude and the distribution of stabilizing confining pressures are significantly influenced by rock and joint strengths, joint orientation, and biaxial nature of the load field.

On the Hauraki goldfields, within the limits of Cape Colville Peninsula, the Paheozoic rocks are confined to the district north of a line drawn from Mercury Bay on the east coast to Rocky Point on the shore of the Frith of Thames. South of Kennedy&apos;s Bay they are developed on the east coast only at Kuaotunu, at which place gold mining is carried on in sandstones and slates of this age. Between Tapu Creek and Coromandel there is, along and adjacent to the shore of the gulf, a very considerable development of PaJreozoic and in part of Trias rocks, and between the Tiki Stream and the northern end of Tokatea Hill, along the western slope of the main range, lies the special area of the Palreozoic or carboniferous rocks that have more particularly to be dealt with in this paper. The same formation has a large devolpment between Cabbage Bay and the northern slopes of Moehau, and appears to the water marge on both sides of this part of the peninsula.In this part they are of special interest as having, on the west spur of Moehau, a considerable variety of dyke rocks intruded into the sedimentaries, the interest in which is increased by the fact that these dykes theIllselves are of Palreozoic age and correspond to the dykes that are so&apos; abundant in the Tokatea-Tiki area. This report describes the results of a survey of current blast area guarding procedures at surface and underground metal/nonmetal mines. It features five case histories (two surface and three underground mines) of blast guarding methods considered to represent the best systems in use in the U.S. Mining Industry. Elements of an effective blast guarding system are presented along with recommendations for improvements in current blast guarding practices. Industrial and military surveillance and detection technology was reviewed to determine if parallel technology exists for immediate application to blasting site security. While it is concluded that immediate transfer of industrial security technology will be limited, a number of recommendations are advanced for new research to adapt some of that technology for application to the mining environment. Two research areas considered to offer the most potential for improved blast guarding are presented. They are, computerized personnel tracking and blast area intrusion detection using infrared, microwave or E-field type detection systems.

A brief review of the Waipipi Iron Sands Limited company history and operations over the past ten years is made along with a summary of the benefits of this mining company to New Zealand. Land rehabilitation procedures in coastal dune lands are described in detail and brief mention is made of a study of animal health and copper uptake. The paper concludes with a summary of the increased emphasis on agronomy and restoration as the mining operation commences dredging in a better class of grazing land.
