Mercurian e1ectrum (Au-Ag-Hg alloy) is the principal Au-bearing phase in the massive sulphide ores at Trout Lake, Manitoba. The average composition of this phase (in wt %) is 49.2 % Ag. 38.7 % Au and 11.0 % Hg, with ranges of 17.34 to 76.47 % Ag, 1.62 to 79.86 % Au and 1.29 to 30.87 % Hg. Compositional variation reflects solid solution in the a-phase of the Ag-Au-Hg system. Backscatter electron imagery reveals systematic zoning and suggests a general crystallization sequence from metamorphic pore fluids of progressively Ag-rich compositions. Investigation of the occurrence of gold in mill products demonstrates that mercurian electrum accounts for over 90 % of the Au in Trout Lake ore. I Invisible" gold in pyrite (x = 0.72 ppm Au) and arsenopyrite (x 30.2 ppm Au) is confirmed by SIMS analyses, and accounts for 7-10 % of the Au in the ore, and 35 % of the Au lost to the tailings. The remaining 65 % of the Au lost to the tailings consists principally of mercurian electrum locked with pyrite. No significant losses of mercurian electrum in the size range amenable to flotation and/or regrinding is indicated.

Bulk Metallic Glasses have a high potential as advanced engineering materials due to their various properties including strength and corrosion resistance, to name a few. This paper investigates amorphous phase formation and rapid solidification characteristics of impulse atomized Co-based alloys in order to understand and control the application properties of the final products. Amorphous fraction and kinetic crystallization properties of the atomized Co-based alloy powders were quantified by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry. In addition, different but complementary characterization tools were used to analyze microstructures of the powders. These include optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and micro-hardness tests. While the amorphous fraction within the powders is promoted by high cooling rate and smaller powder size as expected, hardness is found to decrease with the fraction of amorphous phase.

O crescente aumento da produção do setor moveleiro tem fortemente contribuído para a economia do país. No entanto, o setor gera grande quantidade de resíduos sólidos. Este trabalho visa avaliar o resíduo em pó de MDF, com o intuito de identificar a melhor forma de valorização do mesmo. Para isso, realizou-se um diagnóstico ambiental de uma fábrica de móveis de pequeno porte, e procedeu-se a caracterização do resíduo de MDF na forma de pó. O diagnóstico ambiental identificou que o resíduo na forma de pó está presente em todas as etapas do processo. As etapas de maiores impactos ambientais são a de corte e acabamento/polimento, já que nestas ocorre a maior geração de resíduo sólido, bem como consumo de energia e geração de material particulado. A caracterização da amostra identificou o material com algumas limitações para aplicações em processos industriais, mas que podem ser atenuadas com algum tipo de beneficiamento, podendo o mesmo ser utilizado como carga de reforço em matriz polimérica.

A rapid infrared forming technique has been developed to fabricate titanium matrix composites. This technique applies infrared heating to infiltrate titanium alloys into carbon and silicon carbide prepregs. The entire process typically takes 1-2 minutes in an inert atmosphere. The advantages of this technique are that the process is fast, simple, does not require a vacuum or a high external pressure. The process is very economical both in energy conservation and operation costs. This technique has been used to produce void free composites with limited, well controlled fiber-matrix reactions and mechanical properties comparable to currently available titanium matrix composites.

Estimating groundwater inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies for estimating steady-state groundwater inflows into deep rock tunnels. The case studies included the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels. In this paper, statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations. A semi-empirical procedure was utilized for estimating groundwater inflows into these deep rock tunnels. It is the most widely used method/procedure in the tunnel industry. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels which exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semi-empirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Packer test data plotted in histograms were observed in all cases to be log-normally distributed for the radial flow condition. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing irregularities in the distribution of the data and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable groundwater inflow estimates. This paper is based on the PhD thesis entitled “Improvements to the Current State of the Practice in Steady-State, Groundwater Inflow Estimates into Rock Tunnels based on the Application of Statistical Analysis Methods of Packer Test Data obtained from Exploratory Borings During Geotechnical Site Investigations.”

This paper is an update of the activities of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, other government agencies, and the automotive and truck industry concerning diesel emission control. Enacted and proposed regulations from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and developments in diesel emission control are presented in terms of their impact on underground coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. Mine air quality regulations proposed by MSHA may require the underground mining industry to comply with new standards. Some mines may be required to take additional actions to meet new diesel particulate and lower nitrogen dioxide exposure standards; however, the mining industry is in a position to benefit from emission controls developed for the on-highway diesel engine market. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted regulations to reduce emissions from on-highway diesel trucks and buses. Engine manufacturers have responded by developing cleaner burning engines. Fuel producers have responded by providing cleaner burning reformulated diesel fuel, and exhaust aftertreatment devices have been developed to provide additional emissions reductions. Bureau research and development projects seek to determine the advantages of using modern engines and fuels, and to evaluate the efficacy of new exhaust control devices on mining machines. It appears that the diesel engine will continue to be a practical power source for use in confined environments because no other available power source is as mobile and efficient.

Em uma linha de decapagem contínua, o tempo de parada da entrada para realização da solda é um dos fatores que mais afeta a produtividade. Estratificando-se o tempo total dessa parada, parte significativa é composta pelo tempo de centelhamento, que é um dos parâmetros fundamentais da soldagem a topo por centelhamento. Adicionalmente, a energia elétrica e o gás natural, consumidos durante o processo de soldagem, contribuem para onerar o custo de transformação da BQD. A fim de reduzir esse tempo e os custos de transformação, avaliou-se, através de análise metalográfica, ensaios de embutimento e dureza, a qualidade de juntas soldas com tempos reduzidos e sem o uso do sistema de depleção de oxigênio, para aços de baixo carbono, de acordo com referências da literatura. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi possível reduzir o tempo médio de solda em 5s em materiais com espessuras superiores a 2,50mm e eliminar a necessidade do uso de gás natural em todos os aços da GRADE 0, o que representa em torno de 76% das bobinas produzidas nas LDCs.

ECONOMIC utilization of all by-products has long been the goal of American industry. One of the first groups that was popularly supposed to have achieved its aim was the meat-packing industry, which reputedly found a use for everything except the squeal of the hog. To the metallurgist, slag has always been the principal wasted by-product, representing a loss not only of material, but of heat. Slag does not possess many qualities that appeal to man's imagination or suggest a romantic influence on the daily life and progress of a community or nation. It is a bulky product, and space for its disposal within reasonable hauling distance of a smelter is not always available; the iron-ore smelter especially has been wont to find space for slag disposal at a premium. Therefore, the success that has been attained in recent years in finding a use for iron blast-furnace slag is notable. It has become a vital economic factor in the construction industry in areas where it is available. Its use may suggest further possibilities of an economic outlet for the slags from nonferrous smelting as well.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Para qualificação e aprovação do processo, foram realizados testes em amostras soldadas simulando condições de trabalho os quais são aqui apresentados Através deste trabalho, concluiu-se a recuperação de seis Mancais de Encosto Siderúrgicos com Peso unitário médio de 8 Ton.

Coal, as well as a large part of other minerals in Canada, is produced by surface mining methods. This has resulted in short and long-term accumulation of waste rock in dumps. Two main problems arise from the flow of water through these dumps: stability of dumps and the impact on stream flows. In recent years, a number of mines have started placing waste rock in valleys for general disposal or far constructing mine access road ways. All these have created challenges in the following areas: effective design of dumps and flow-through dams; stability monitoring of the structures; environmental impacts downstream by way of increased amount of fines in suspension, sedimentation, and toxic substances; and long-term status of flow and flood. Similar situations also exist in many civil engineering structures. This paper discusses the status of rock drains and the immediate and future research needs.

INTRODUCTION IN a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the technical cohesion limit is affected by the same four factors that affect the flow stress, namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate.16-28 Moreover, each of these factors affects the technical cohesion limit in the same way that it affects the flow stress.‡ The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into use with the same significance as "technical cohesion limit," the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the flow of notched and unnotched specimens between yield and fracture. A study has thus been made of the flow and fracture of metals as affected by the stress system, and of the ductility of metals as affected by the stress system throughout plastic deformation. Since two of the principal stresses were equal (S2 = S3), the stress systems can be represented in terms of the radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse radial stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Sl.* The results of the experiments are represented by a series of complete flow-stress curves for each of the metals investigated, and these diagrams have been used for the development of other diagrams of various types. Ludwik was the first to suggest that fracture occurs when the flow stress becomes equal to a technical cohesion limit. Although Ludwik was incorrect in his view that the technical cohesion limit depends only on the amount of plastic deformation and not on the stress system, he was correct in his view that the flow-stress curve for any stress system terminates at a point representing a technical cohesion limit. The authors have seen some recent references to assertions by other investigators that a point representing the fracture stress need not be on the flow-stress curve. The Ludwik principle, however, would seem to be axiomatic, provided that the flow stress and fracture stress are properly defined and that the fracture stress is properly determined. Disregard of this principle has led to some untenable theories of criteria for fracture. When a metal is very ductile, the conventional method of determining the ductility and fracture stress by dividing the breaking load by the sectional area after fracture, generally gives values that are much too high. Chalcocite concentrate obtained by magnetic separation and flotation of Bessemer matte is processed in the Inca top blowing bottom stirring MK reactor into semi-blister copper. The semi-blister is then converted into blister copper in the multi-purpose vessels (MPV) by oxidation of iron, nickel and sulphur. High melting point NiO and Fe30 4 are formed inside the MPV s, which together with Cu20 and smaller amount of fayalite are the major constituents of the solid mush. The accumulation of solid mush and buildup requires periodic MPV cleaning by adding reductant and copper-nickel matte, a unique process called "washout". Various reductants and their combinations, such as pig-iron, 15%Si Ferro-silicon and 50%Si Ferro-silicon, have been used for the reduction of solid mush and buildup. The possibilities of using calcium carbide as a reductant and slagging flux were examined experimentally at the crucible scale. The rate of reduction of MPV buildup was determined by continuous measurement of CO and C02 contents in the offgas and the flowrate of argon carrier gas. The rate of the buildup reduction with calcium carbide was approximately five times faster than the rate of reduction with coke. Additionally, the formation of CaO results in the melting of reduced buildup and formation of a slag at 1300°C and higher temperatures. It was found that simultaneous silica addition enhanced the melting and slag formation. The results showed the strong dependence of the reduction rate on temperature. Activation energy is approximately 225 kJ/mol. Expected benefits of using calcium carbide are related to cost saving on reductant, significant acceleration of solid mush reduction, and reduced amount iron input from reductant.

In a study1 of the action of amyl xan-thate on chalcocite in water suspension, it was found that if the xanthate is added in relatively large quantity the xanthate group can be accounted for in three forms: (1) as xanthate ion remaining in water, (2) as benzene-soluble cuprous xanthate on the chalcocite, (3) as a benzene-insoluble coating on the chalcocite. Reduction in the amount of xanthate added leads to disappearance of form I then of form 2. With minute quantities of added xanthate, substantially all the reagent is of the "unleachable" kind. Yet this unleach-able xanthate can be dissolved by pyridine to form a soluble cuprous xanthate complex, and it is sufficient in effectiveness to make chalcocite flotable even if insufficient in quantity to form a complete mono-molecular film on the mineral. In that study it was also found that chalcocite abstracts cuprous xanthate from benzene so1ution, in what may (or may not) be a case of molecular adsorption. It seemed desirable, therefore, to study further the "unleachable" xanthate on the chalcocite, and particularly to ascertain whether it is formed as a result of the benzene leach or is actually formed during the conditioning of chalcocite in aqueous xanthate solution. A 'splendid tool to make such studies has recently been perfected; that is, the use of radioactive spies or tracer atoms. With this tool, it was thought possible to answer the problem stated above, but, unfortunately, this did not prove to be true. Answer to the flotation question was clouded by the existence of rapid and selective diffusion of copper atoms in the solid mineral—a phenomenon that was totally unexpected yet remains interesting and perhaps important. Method of Radioactive Spies The method of radioactive spies is discussed in many places. Two convenient references are the article by Evans2 and the book by pollard and Davidson.3 The method was first developed by van Hevesy and paneth in 1013, when only natural radioactive isotopes were available. These isotopes are few in number, and so the method remained limited in scope. Recently the synthesis of over 350 active isotopes of all the known stable chemical elements4 has opened widely expanded possibilities for the method, A fundamental tenet of the method is that a radioactive atom and a nonradio-active atom are exactly alike until disintegration of the radioactive atom. Then, by its sudden death, the spy reveals its location. The relative abundance of spies at various locations makes it possible to ascertain the relative abundance of the corresponding nonradioactive atoms at the same times and locations. Geologic structures have been responsible for numerous underground accidents and fatalities, and are a constant-source of down time. During - longwall mining, ground control problems associated with geologic anomalies are aggravated by the abutment pressures which develop as the panel is retreated. Therefore, it is imperative that these structures be recognized and properly supported in head- and tailgates. Fractures, faults, clay veins, igneous dikes, and ancient stream channels (paleochannels) disrupt the lateral continuity of the mine roof and can cause falls in gateroads. Horsebacks and kettle bottoms are also hazardous because abutment pressures tend to "pop out' these structures into the gateroads. This Bureau of Mines investigation describes the physical characteristics associated with hazardous geologic structures, identifies the coal fields where-they have been observed, and, where possible, suggests support strategies and other mine plan modifications to help minimize their effect.

The liquid-level gage described in this report is an instrument designed to locate liquid levels in wells rapidly and accurately and, with auxiliary equipment described, to follow moving liquid levels automatically. The depth at which the instrument makes contact with the liquid in a well is indicated at the surface by a depth meter on the cable to which the instrument is attached. When the gage is used to follow a surging moving level, the liquid depth is indicated continuously at the surface. This report contains a description and illustrations of the gage and outlines the operating procedures. The instrument is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length and may be operated through 2-inch tubing. The gage consists essentially of a float that moves upward with respect to the rest of the assembly, causing a change in the flow of electric current from the surface when the liquid level is reached. The instrument has been tested under a variety of conditions and has been found to be sensitive to changes in liquid level of 1/2 inch. Its accuracy is limited principally by the accuracy of the wire-line depth indicator used. It is not affected by pressure or temperature, and it can be run in open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. It employs only one electric circuit and can be run on an Amergraph single-conductor cable (type 1-H-0) ,

"Abstract This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and design issues at two environmentally challenging industrial sites in North America. Environmental regulations set constraints on the design and require versatility in choice of technology.For a proposed bridge, due to protected fish habitat, performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited. The limited subsurface profile indicated a thick upper layer of granular material, thus driving H-piles was considered. However, to limit generation of vibration and noise in the protected area, drilled piles had to be used. During execution, the subsurface profile differed from that in the borings 30 m away. Very soft, saturated silt was encountered at the bottom of the caisson and the length had to be redesigned very quickly while the contractor waited for instruction. For a new structure in uncontrolled fill area, performing soil borings was not allowed. It was known that a layer of peat was present in the area, but no information regarding the thickness and extent. The subsurface profile generally consisted of granular material overlying a thick compressible silt layer. Somewhere within the granular layer peat would likely be encountered. Franki piles were chosen to penetrate the peat and bear in the underlying granular material. During environmental sampling in the area, methane gas was encountered and Franki piles were no longer a viable option due to safety concerns. The foundation system was changed to steel H-piles driven to bedrock, which was more than 50 m below the ground surface and sloping. Rock shoes that would work to significant slopes had to be used in order to increase the likelihood of good embedment within the bedrock. Also, due to obstruction of an approximately 3 m thick debris field that was encountered in the upper granular soils, some of the piles had to be relocated and extra piling needed to compensate for such differences. The results of PDA testing to estimate compressive capacity and a series of lateral load tests are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe design issues that are encountered during construction can be quite problematic and have a significant impact on schedule. In order to avoid such impact on the project, a thorough subsurface investigation should be considered prior to design and construction. Better understanding of environmental regulations also prevents costly changes to the foundation design. This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and the design issues at two environmentally challenging sites in North America.BRIDGEDuring the subsurface investigation for a proposed industrial building complex, several boreholes were drilled within the footprint or in close proximity of various structures, with Standard Penetration (SPT) sampling of the upper coarse-grained soils (sand/gravel) and undisturbed sampling of the lower fine-grained soils (silt/clay). The SPT blow counts (N60) were corrected by a factor of 1.35 in order to incorporate the SPT automatic energy transfer ratio. When Modified California Sampler was used, a correction factor of 0.44 to 0.64 was also applied. N60 values were further corrected for gravel to avoid artificially high blow counts during the analyses due to spoon samples contact with gravel and cobbles, and the corrected values of (NG)60 (limited to a maximum value of 50 blows/300 mm) were used for design. The information from the SPT boreholes was then used to assess the subsurface conditions beneath the structures, as well as for a nearby bridge that was designed to cross over a creek. Since performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited due to the protected fish habitat, the investigation with regard to the bridge abutments was limited to two deep boreholes (B10-33 and B10-34) at the bridge location and two additional boreholes (B10-35 and B10- 36) located approximately 200 m upstream. The heat capacities of four crystalline silicates of barium ( BaSiO3 , BaSiO4 , Ba Si¸0 , and BaSi₂0 ) and two crystalline silicates of strontium (SrSio and Sr₂Sio ) were measured over the temperature range from 51 ° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the entropies at 298.15 ° K. The entropy values were joined with known heats of formation to obtain the free energies of formation of the silicates with respect to their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K.
