GENERAL INTRODUCTION by R. Q. Shotts The sizing of coal particles is one of the most important beneficiation operations performed from the time coal is broken at the face until it is delivered to the customer. Indeed, in many cases it may be virtually the only such operation performed in that interval, although it is most often accompanied by some comminution. Sizing, as the term implies, is a separation of the broken coal particles into arbitrary groups, each group containing particles within restricted mass, volume or size limits. Size itself is not a rigidly defined property, but is actually determined more by the operating principles of the sizing device than by unique properties of the particles themselves. Particle size cannot be uniquely defined independently of particle shape. Taggart l says, "In fact, it is not possible to state the size of a single irregular body by means of a single dimension; such possibility exists only for regular polyhedra and their limit, the sphere." In view of the scarcity of regular polyhedra among coal particles, even though most appear to approximate a cube, we actually define size in terms of a surface opening through which the particle barely will or will not pass, or of two openings, the smaller of which retains all particles of the group under study and the larger of which passes all of them. Alternatively, size is expressed in terms of rate of settling of particles in a fluid under closely controlled conditions. Historical Sketch2-Taken from Coal Preparation, 2nd Ed. "Sizing is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size or into groups in which all particles range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. "In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. The mining procedure left the fines in the mine.

"Hollow bar tiebacks can offer an economical alternative to conventional solid bar and strand tieback systems for use in temporary excavation support construction. However, the limitations associated with the installation of hollow bar tiebacks require special attention during design, construction and load testing to verify conformance with conventional performance and proof testing criteria (PTI, 2014). In particular, providing a reliable free length is complicated by the 10-foot (3-m) -long, segmental, couplingto- coupling nature of the free length sheath in the hollow bar system, and addressing the fully grouted annulus of the bond zone and the free length zone at the end of installation are key concerns. In addition, it is often more convenient to install a greater number of more closely spaced, lower capacity tiebacks with the hollow bar system, compared to conventional tiebacks. This paper examines how these issues were addressed for a project involving a 60-foot (18-m) -deep sheet pile excavation through a highway embankment and a 70-foot-deep sheet pile and soldier pile and lagging excavation through a railroad embankment, both supported by a hybrid system of hollow bar tiebacks and hollow bar soil nails. The project involved approximately 300 tiebacks and 400 soil nails.INTRODUCTIONEngineers Construction, Inc. (ECI), constructed a pair of 32-foot (9.8-m) -wide (clear span), 30-foot (9- m) -high (21 feet (6.4 m) above the stream bed), cast-in-place concrete arch culverts as a design-build project for the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) in East Ryegate, Vermont. The new culverts replaced an existing 8-foot (2.4-m) -wide by 6-foot (1.8-m) -high cast-in-place concrete culvert under US Route 5 (RTE5), and twin, 2-foot (0.6-m) -wide by 5-foot (1.5-m) -high granite block culverts under the Washington County Railroad (WACR) alignment. The culverts convey Manchester Brook eastward, through the embankments for RTE5 and the WACR, on its way to the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River is located approximately 100 feet (30 m) east of the WACR embankment. The existing structures were undersized and backed up water behind the embankments during high flow events; and often trapped debris that flowed down the brook and became clogged. The existing culverts also had cracks and openings that have resulted in the loss of ground into the culverts and the formation of sinkholes in the sides of the embankments. Moreover, the reason for the large cross-sectional dimensions of the culverts was to make them of sufficient size and openness to encourage the migration of fish up the stream to spawn. The culvert through the RTE5 embankment is 144 feet (44 m) long, and the culvert through the WACR embankment is 128 feet (39 m) long, with a 57-foot (17.4-m) -long by 32–foot (9.8- m) -wide by 17-foot (5.2-m) -deep 10 feet (3 m) deep above the stream bed) open channel section between the two culverts. The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Notnnea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanims of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend from early inafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calc- alkaline. There is no evidence of 'mixing, of, the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to sprcadime in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier Mesozoic subduction zone.

The development of trackless mining at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited is described, showing the changes in mining method and the part played by the mobile equipment in the evolution of this highly mechanized underground operation. Comparisons of loading and hauling machines are given and an attempt is made to predict some possible future developments.INTRODUCTIONTHE PROPERTY OF GASPE COPPER MINES LIMITED is located in the Gaspe Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, 60 miles west of the village of Gaspe and 25 miles south of the St. Lawrence River. The original discovery of low-grade ore was made at Copper Mountain in 1921. Subsequent exploration revealed the richer Needle Mountain orebodies, and eventually in 1951 the decision was made by Noranda Mines to build the mining, concentrating and smelting complex (Figure 1). Construction and development of the mine was commenced in 1952 and production started in 1955."

In order to understand more fully the actual state of copper lost in copper reverberatory slags, a systematic study on the various reactions between certain metallurgically important copper compounds and synthetic copper reverberatory slags was undertaken by the authors in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1942 to 1945.1 This paper, being only a part of the work completed, is published first because it furnishes the first experimental evidence of the formation of copper ferrite from reactions between cuprous oxide and copper reverberatory slags. Choice of Slag Composition The choice of the composition of the synthetic reverberatory slags to be used was much deliberated. Commercial copper reverberatory slags, neglecting minor constituents, avcrage :2,3 45 to 47 pct FeO; 38 to 42 pct SiO2; 5 to 6 pct CaO; 5 to 6 pct A12O3. Since the ternary system CaO-FeO-SiO2 has been much more thoroughly studied4 and is much simpler than the quaternary system CaO-FeO-SiO2-Al2O3, it was decided to use calcium oxide only instead of calcium oxide and alumina in the synthesis of the slags. Fortunately the composition of the average copper reverberatory slag with calcium oxide substituted for alumina lies in the region of the phase diagram clarified by the investigators. A survey of the phase diagram (Fig I) suggested two compositions: (I) the composition near the invariant point S, which is made up of 46 pct ferrous oxide, 37 pct silica and 17 pct calcium oxide; (2) the composition near the invariant point K with 45.5 pct ferrous oxide, 43 pct silica and 11.5 pct calcium oxide. Composition S has the advantage that the percentages of ferrous oxide and of silica almost exactly coincide with those of the average reverberatory slags, and that of the lowest melting point (1093º ± 3ºC) in the whole ternary system. The calcium oxide content, however, obviously is high. Since we have already substituted calcium oxide for alumina, and since calcium oxide is more basic than alumina, the fulfil- slag is decidedly too basic. Composition K has a slightly higher melting point (1150O + 3OC) and a higher silica content, but this is preferred because the slag is saturated with respect to tri-dymite and thus should not corrode siliceous refractories. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cutting removal systems will all be adapted at Solwara 1. Key contractors to the project have all been selected for their deepwater experience, creativity and determination to launch this new industry. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper gives an overview of the Solwara 1 development and describes the exploration and production technologies adapted for seafloor mineral extraction.

The electrochemistry of coal pyrite is relevant to coal desulfurization by chemical or bacterial leaching, flotation and oil agglomeration. The electrochemical behavior of polished and etched Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh coal pyrite samples was investigated from pH 1.0 to 10.5. The open-circuit potentials decreased with increasing pH, as expected, but were well above the thermodynamic stability region of pyrite, and decreased with time. Cyclic voltammetry revealed behavior highly sensitive to pH and scan rate (2.0 and 20.0 mV/s). The behavior on the first cycle was always substantially different from that on subsequent cycles. The anodic and cathodic reactions were correlated with the Eh-pH diagram for the Fe-S-H20 system to identify the reactions occurring at different pH values. There was also evidence that the buffers used to maintain basic pH values are themselves electrochemically active, which should be considered in interpreting many earlier electrochemical studies of sulfide minerals.

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II)-activated sphalerite exhibits a high flotability so that satisfied separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by IR; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitute and polymerization of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. In recent investigations of chloride Volatilization of gold at the Reno Station, it was found that the addition of small amounts of copper and NaCl to the charge brought about improved volatilization of the gold. The investigations described in this report were concerned with the recovery, in an aqueous medium, of fumes from chloride volatilization of gold. It was attempted to discover a suitable aqueous medium that would permit absorption, solution, or precipitation of all the volatilized gold immediately upon contact with the medium. A simple laboratory apparatus was employed to produce fumes by volatilization. To this furnace was attached an absorption train consisting of a series of chambers containing the aqueous medium, through which the fumes were drawn by suction. A satisfactory synthetic ore that contained metallic, gold in a quartz-matrix was made and utilized, enough. gold being present in a' small amount of material to permit an accurate, metallurgical balance of the volatized values' to be obtained in all the experiments.

THE normal method of preparing metallic alloys for commercial use involves the preparation of a melt containing the given components in the chosen proportions and allowing the homogeneous liquid mass to solidify in a mold of the desired form. The solidification is frequently accompanied by a segregation of the alloying elements in different parts of the casting. When the segregation is occasioned primarily by marked differences in density of the solid and liquid phases, it is termed "gravity" segregation. When the segregation conforms to a. selective freezing in harmony with the teachings of the equilibrium diagram of the alloy system-i.e., the lower melting phases are concentrated in the regions of the casting last to freeze-it is often referred to as " normal" segrega-tion. However, in many cases the lower-melting part of the system is concentrated in the parts of the casting first to freeze and the result in this case is termed "inverse" segregation. To complete the. terminology of the subject, normal segregation in a single phase is usually called "coring" and the word will be used in that sense in this paper. Inverse segregation, particularly when the liquid phase is exuded or sweated out on the surface of the casting, is sometimes called "location." Unfortunately, some ambiguity has arisen from the use of this term and it is perhaps advisable to confine its use to the dictionary definition; namely, "The separation of two phases by heat sufficient to melt one but not the other." The gravity and normal types of segregation are both well understood and to some extent are controllable by taking advantage of the most favorable cooling rate for a given casting condition. Inverse segregation has received considerable attention from several investigators- but none of the theories offered seem to account in a convincing way for the many examples of this type. The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation system is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside ; it must move men in and out of the mine ; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served : 1) Pace Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. The purpose of the separation processes in coal processing is obtaining products of certain ash contents. In the most of cases it is assumed that the separation process is described by one, selected parameter, which usually is grain size or material density. The separation may be described by means of statistical distributions of random variables, what allows forecasting the separation results of certain enrichment method. There are very well known the applications of approximations of Tromp separation curves or distribution functions of Erasmus, Meloy or Weibull. It is necessary to say that if the fitness of the approximation more suitable, then the characteristics of the process itself is also better. In purpose of obtaining more appropriate results, these methods were modified by application the mathematical functions, as i.e. hyperbolic tangens function. Furthermore, on the basis of empirical data, so-called interpolations may be performed in purpose of getting more appropriate results of approximation. One of the most known techniques of interpolation is Hughes method. This method for interpolating standard data involves breaking down each interval into a number of smaller sub-intervals. The results of such one-dimensional approach not always contain the full in-formation of the searched distribution. It happens because such interpretation of the problem is not completely correct. In practice, the separation process depends not only on the one parameter (i.e. grain size), but also on many other features characterizing certain material (i.e. its density). It seems then that in some cases the application of multidimensional grain characteristics distributions will be more appropriate. In this paper, the technique of joining the distributions of grain size and density by means of so-called Morgenstern distributions is shown. The general form of these distributions is as following:

The large scale of cave mines leads to many challenges, including operational logistics and geomechanics design. In current practice, pillar stability assessment relies almost exclusively on stress analysis. However, stability is also affected by other factors including those related to operational aspects of the mining method, the effects of which are difficult to account for during the design stages. In this paper we present a case study of the application of a machine learning approach to evaluate the influence of these operational factors on pillar stability at the Chuquicamata underground cave mine in northern Chile. Due to the likely multi-factorial damage process leading to collapses and considering the different pillar conditions, a tree-based machine learning method was used and analysed to improve the understanding of the relative importance of the various contributing factors. Unlike stress analysis methods, it does not require any a priori knowledge of failure mechanisms, nor the calibration of associated controlling parameters. The proposed random forest model predicted pillar collapses with 80% accuracy despite limited samples to model from. The main contributing factors to collapses were found to be related to available pillar volume, cave front geometry, and time under abutment stress conditions. The effects and interactions of such factors were also studied, showing that careful and improved control over operational conditions can significantly reduce the likelihood of pillar collapses. These conclusions could not have been obtained from stress analysis alone, illustrating the complementary nature of conventional stress analysis and machine learning approaches.

Um dos problemas de aglomerados autorredutores utilizando cimento como aglomerante é a sua baixa resistência mecânica a temperaturas acima de 900°C levando-os à degradação durante a redução. Uma nova tecnologia propôs utilizar as propriedades de plasticidade térmica do carvão fóssil coqueificáveis como aglomerante, o que deu origem ao produto conhecido como CCB (Carbon Composite Iron Ore Hot Briquette). Este trabalho tem como objetivo propor uma rota alternativa para a fabricação dos briquetes autorredutores e estudar o efeito de variáveis de processo na resistência à compressão dos mesmos. O método utilizado na obtenção dos briquetes foi de compactação em matriz cilíndrica de misturas de finos de carvão fóssil coqueificável (log(máxima fluidez) = 2,48) e minério de ferro (pellet feed) seguida de tratamento térmico. Foram realizados testes variando granulometria do carvão, pressão de compactação, taxa de aquecimento e proporção entre carvão e minério e investigados os efeitos dessas variáveis em relação à resistência à compressão e à densidade dos briquetes produzidos. Foi observado que a resistência à compressão obtida nos briquetes produzidos via briquetagem a frio seguida de tratamento térmico são comparáveis com os CCBs.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. "In massive and semi-massive deposits, it is essential to take samples continuously for specific gravity determination as well as for assays of the various metals of interest. Failure to use specific gravity in mixed deposits of high density contrast will result in incorrect determinations of the average grade.Graphs and linear equations of specific gravity against the grade of one metal are not considered accurate enough in a multi-mineral deposit, but appear to be very satisfactory in a theoretical one-sulphide/gangue mix. Specific gravities based on base-metal values only in massive sulphide deposits will result in underestimating the effect of low grade areas on the average grade and also cause a reduction in the calculated tonnage.IntroductionBy definition, a base-metal assay is the percentage of metal by weight contained in a sample, whether it be a soil or silt sample, a grab, chip or channel sample, or a section of diamond drill core.In those cases where there is a series of contiguous samples, say in diamond-drill core, the average grade may be required of the various assays that are above a desired or required cutoff grade.Internal low grade or waste can be included if the assays one side or the other are used to ""carry"" the lower grade material and the resulting average grade is above the cut-off grade. To determine the average grade, the individual assays are ""weighted"" by multiplying these values by their respective lengths, adding up the cumulative assay times length and dividing by the total length. This method is essentially a weighting by volume, because the core diameter is constant and is common to all the samples being considered for estimating the average grade . If some of the core samples have much higher specific gravities than others, and the specific gravities are not used in the weighting process, the resultant average grade will be over-estimated or underestimated, depending on the grade of the heavier sections. When core assays of approximately the same specific gravity or weight are averaged by length, the error in the weighted estimation of the average grade is negligible."

The paper will provide a brief review of the latest alternatives to SAG mills. Included in this review will be a discussion of the comparable benefits of each technology. Commonly accepted disadvantages will also be presented.
