Before the various States began to enact workman's compensation laws accidents were considered inherent in many industries, and little or no effort was made to prevent or reduce them. The hazard was accepted by the employee with the job, and the avoidance of accidents by mental alertness or physical agility was largely his responsibility. After the employee had given evidence of enough skill inn performing his allotted task efficiently the responsibility of the employer apparently ceased with respect to the personal safety of the employee. However, following the enactment of workmen's compensation laws, at least two facts that had not before been fully appreciated soon became apparent: (1) The majority of accidents can be prevented if the management firmly determines to prevent them; (2) frog a monetary point of view alone accidents are decidedly expensive, both to employer and to employee. It is now evident that savings effected by conscientious safety effort add substantially to net profits of operation.

"The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is a major water utility service providing water to over 1.3 million people in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. EBMUD manages 28 dams at 5 terminal and 23 open-cut reservoirs within a 331-square-mile customer service area. As part of a 2012 update on EBMUD’s Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan for Distribution Reservoirs, EBMUD has decided to replace Central Reservoir, a 152.8 milliongallon open cut reservoir, with optimally sized tanks. This paper presents the results of an analytical comparison of various foundation reinforcement solutions for the proposed tanks including: Cement Deep Soil Mixed (CDSM) columns, vibro stone columns, rammed aggregate piers, and lightweight cellular concrete fill. The computational program GeoMat (www.ensoftinc.com) was used to perform simplified soil structure interaction analyses. Settlement estimates were developed for each alternative with the proposed loading and compared to an allowable differential settlement criterion established at 0.3-inches over a 50 foot length. The authors wish to present the importance of considering mat and soil interaction along with various settlement mitigation methods considered for this challenging project.INTRODUCTIONProject BackgroundCentral Reservoir is an operational open-cut reservoir located north of the intersection of 25th Avenue and East 29th Street in Oakland, California. The reservoir is bound by 23rd Avenue to the west, Sheffield Avenue to the east and Interstate Highway 580 to the north. Originally, the Central Reservoir site was a drainage swale incising into weathered bedrock formed from Pleistocene alluvial deposits. The reservoir was first constructed in 1910 by excavating a basin below grade and constructing an embankment dam on the south and cutting/filling the bedrock and alluvial deposits from the drainage swale. The main dam at the Central Reservoir site is also a DSOD (Department of Safety of Dams) jurisdictional dam and as such is regularly monitored by the EBMUD Materials Engineering Section and the California DSOD.In a 2012 update to EBMUD’s Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan for Distribution Reservoirs, Central Reservoir was identified as a critical facility that has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced due to: a failing panel craft lining which contains polychlorinated biphenyls in the interior coating, a roof that does not meet the current seismic code, and reduced operating levels due to potential leakage in the upper portions of the panel craft lining. Furthermore, Central Reservoir is about three times larger than required and is located at a lower elevation than other regional reservoirs in the pressure zone resulting in increased labor-intensive operational challenges and water quality operations.This project presents some challenging geotechnical demands – the site is founded on weakly consolidated Holocene Alluvium overlying weathered bedrock, the proposed structural loads are large, and the new Central Reservoir is to be placed on a pad at an elevation of 182 feet, required placement of up to 30 feet of fill over the current basin. Additionally, the project aims for a long-term foundation solution that will outlive the new replacement tanks and accommodate future site upgrades. In order to meet this goal, the differential settlement criterion for the tanks was ¼ inch over 50 feet length. Lastly, the project also aims to address EBMUD’s increasing trench spoil stockpiles by recycling discarded trench spoils as fill for the proposed tank pad."

"Designs, installation procedures and performance characteristics of martensitic cast steel concaves are reviewed. Longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and eliminating the need to scarf joints are the principal benefits of using martensitic steel to replace austenitic12% Mn (Hadfield's) steel, the traditional concave material for large gyratory crushers. Installation procedures that reduce the risk of breakage are described. Operating practices that affect concave performance are also discussed.IntroductionThe crushing machine considered to be the forerunner of the modem gyratory crusher was patented in 1878 by Charles M. Brown of the Gates Iron Works(1). The earliest gyratory crushers with receiving openings of 6 to 12 inches were fed by hand, and the crushing capacity of a mine was increased simply by installing more small crushers. The introduction of the steam shovel to open pit mining around the tum of the century provided an incentive for much larger primary crushers, and gyratory crushers with a 48 in. receiving opening were being built by 1910, followed not long afterward by machines with 54 in. and 60 in. openings to . Fortunately for the crusher maintenance people of that era, an austenitic 12% Mn steel with exceptional toughness was already available, having been discovered by Robert Abbot Hadfieldoi in 1882. Although small gyratory crushers working soft- to medium-hard rock reportedly used chilled cast iron (white iron) wear parts, these newer and much larger machines were fitted with ""Hadfield's manganese steel"" concaves and mantles to withstand the impact associated with handling large rocks .M E International first challenged the long-standing convention of using 12% Mn steel concaves in large gyratory crushers in the late 1960s when they supplied upper row concaves in martensitic cast steel for a 60-109 primary crusher at a taconite plant on the Iron Range. Since then, martensitic steels have been successfully substituted for 12010 Mn steel in concaves for more than seventy primary gyratory crushers processing iron, copper and precious metals ores, industrial minerals and crushed stone.This paper reviews materials, designs and performance characteristics of martensitic steel concaves in large gyratory crushers. The principal benefits include significantly longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and the elimination of scarfing. Obtaining the full measure of these benefits and minimizing the risk of breakage is strongly dependent on installation procedures, which are described in some detail. Operating practices that can affect performance are also discussed."

"A new record in fuel efficiency at petroleum refineries was achieved in 1935, when an average of only 615,000 B. t. u. was needed to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 638,000 B. t. u. in 1934 and 829,000 B. t. u. In 1925. (See fig. 1.)Refiners have made almost uninterrupted progress in firing efficiency during the last decade although much of this gain was brought about by improved technique and greater use of heat exchangers and pipe stills, the determining factor was the trend in crude runs to stills. Most plants can increase their crude throughput materially with but small increase in fuel consumption. Consequently, in years in which crude runs have increased substantially, average requirements have declined; but in years in which crude runs have decreased, the average has tended upward. This conclusion is confirmed by figure 1, which shows that there has been but one minor exception to this rule in the last 10 years.Technical progress in fuel efficiency may be illustrated by comparing crude runs and total B. t, u. consumed. Between 1925 and 1935 crude runs to stills increased 31 percent, but the total quantity of heat required did not increase; in fact, it declined slightly.The trend of modern still construction is from shell stills, in which a large body of oil is heated, to tube stills, in which the heat comes into much closer contact with the oil. In 1935 the total capacity of operating pipe stills increased about 4 percent; this increase, though small, probably was related to the gain in average efficiency.The Increased use of heat exchangers and their role as fuel savers have been discussed in previous reports of this series. It is sufficient to say that refiners with insufficient exchange capacity added as much in 1935 as their budgets would permit."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a perennial problem particularly in abandoned mines, occurring due to the oxidation of sulphidic mine wastes. AMD is usually characterized by high concentration of dissolved metal ions, sulphate and low pH. The efficacies of substrates such as rice husk and the bark of Eucalyptus tereticornis (Sm.) are assessed for the removal of metal ions such as iron, zinc and copper from acid mine water obtained from an abandoned copper mine. Over 99 % of Fe, 98 % of Zn and 95 % of Cu removal could be achieved from acid mine water, with a concomitant increase in the pH value by three units using rice husk as an adsorbent. With respect to tree bark as an adsor-bent, about 96 % of Fe, 75 % of Zn and 92 % of Cu could be removed from the acid mine water with an attendant increase in the pH value by two units. The free energy of adsorption of the metal ions onto rice husk and tree bark is found to be negative in both the cases, while the adsorption process is endothermic in the case of rice husk and exothermic for tree bark. The adsorption process is found to adhere to the Lagergren pseudo-first order rate equation. The reduction of sulphate con-centration in the acid mine water is achieved using a typical sulphate reducing bacteria namely De-sulfotomaculum nigrificans. Desorption experiments indicate that about 88 % of Zn, 87% of Cu and over 77 % of Fe could be recovered from rice husk and over 70 % of Fe, 82 % of Zn and 77 % of Cu could be desorbed from the metal loaded tree bark using 5 M HCl. The possible mechanisms of metal ion and sulphate removal from acid mine water using rice husk and tree bark are discussed.

Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (1956–1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and, thereby, significantly inhibit acid generation, have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited’s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on “Fix Dmacs” technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.

The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

The analysis of ground water inflow and discharge from underground mines has received increased attention in recent years due to environmental issues which must be addressed under current state regulations for coal mining and processing operations. In particular, coal operators must assess the probable hydrologic consequences associated with mining activities, and must plan for mine water handling during operation and following completion of mining. The prediction of ground water inflow rates with future mine development allows preparation for potential operational problem and identification of inflow reduction methods. Similarly, evaluation of mine discharge rates is necessary to address potential long-term acid mine drainage (AND) concerns. As part of mine discharge analyses, methods. to control seepage and AMD can be considered. The objective of this paper is to discuss the practical applications of mine inflow and discharge analysis, describe the typical flow components, outline the procedures necessary to perform the analysis, and illustrate the modeling procedures and potential results of mine inflow and discharge predictions.

"Hydrodynamics principals are applied to the design of a natural air ingestion flotation machine for coarse solids applications. Preliminary laboratory test data and subsequent operating plant flotation kinetic performance evaluations are reviewed. INTRODUCTIONThe concentration of potash (sylvite, KCI) from halite and other salts using flotation is well understood and practice a with much success. Reagent schemes and plant circuitry for obtaining the desired product recovery and grade have been established with proven performance. These flotation circuits normally process the medium and finer size particles, less than 30 mesh (600 microns).However, often the potash market trends specifically demand a coarse product size. This emphasis, accompanied by the existing high losses of coarse (+30 mesh) potash in flotation circuits, creates the need for development of a flotation machines specifically designed for coarse potash beneficiation.This technical challenge was undertaken by the WEMCO Research and Development Group. The specific objectives of this flotation machine development program were ( l) to achieve an ""Ultra Coarse Flotation Machine"" capable of adequately suspending and transporting particles in the 4 - 30 mesh (4.75 - 0.6 mm) size range at solids concentrations of 30% or greater and (2) ascertain metallurgical performance of this machine.This paper covers the development (both theoretical and mechanical/ hydrodynamic), the field test program and results, a discussion of applicable flotation kinetics, and conclusions of this ""Coarse Potash Flotation Machine"" development project."

"Selection of an optimal bit is a critical issue in drilling engineering. Specific energy (SE) and Cost per Foot (CPF) are the most common methods for evaluation of bit efficiency and optimal bit selection. The major shortfall of both methods is that they do not directly account for geological and geomechanical parameters of formations being drilling. In this paper, results of using the two foregoing methods are compared using Formation Drillability (FD) method, which directly accounts for geological and geomechanical parameters of a formation. This method combines various geological and geomechanical parameters and yields a dimensionless parameter indicating the formation drilling hardness (drillability). Results of this study show that the amount of energy, cost and time spent for drilling a unit volume / length of an identical formation may vary in different wells. This is due to the fact that geological and geomechanical characteristics of a formation may vary among wells and even within short intervals of a single well. Therefore, an optimal bit may not be appropriately selected, if drilling and economical parameters are the only factors considered and the formation geological and geomechanical specifications are ignored.INTRODUCTIONMany authors such as Bilgesu, Al-Rashidi, Aminian, and Ameri (2000) and Clegg (2006) conducted research in the evaluation of bit performance and optimum bit selection. Almost all of them tried to establish a good relationship based on geomechanical parameters. Primary examples are the research done by Ubaldi (1999), Macini, Magagni, Da Dalt, and Valente (2007)."

This paper presents the results of an experimental study undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of using silica sand as a grinding media in stirred ball mills for ultra-fine coal grinding. Laboratory batch as well as bench scale continuous tests indicate that the use of silica sand can reduce the energy consumption by 50% and more over its steel media counter-part. Moreover, this approach has been found to eliminate the disadvantages observed with grinding using steel media such as high replacement cost, contamination of coal through media wear, greater degree of coal oxidation due to higher slurry temperature and greater level of noise dissipation. Additionally, coal-sand attrition system reduces the manpower time required which is often spent towards cleaning and storing of steel media in inert atmosphere to avoid rust and corrosion problems.

THE " Munroe effect" of shaped explosive charges was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888), but it was not until World War II that it was put to any practical use. Both Allied and Axis armies used the principle effectively in bazooka projectiles, artillery projectiles and in fixed shaped charges. The first two were used primarily to combat tanks and other armor and the latter to assault pillboxes and other fixed concrete emplacements. Many engineers and others who saw the military application of the jet effect of shaped charges believed application would be possible in many industrial fields where blasting is used, such as mining and quarrying. Some work has already been done on the problem of making shaped charges applicable to mining operations. Experimentation conducted at the National Tunnel and Mines' was directed primarily along the lines of use of shaped charges for secondary blasting in connection with long-hole stoping methods. Experimentation initiated earlier and conducted by the author2 at the University of Utah on a more scientific basis was directed at revealing the basic principles of the functioning of shaped charges, as well as the feasibility of using them in mining operations after the principles of their operation had been clearly defined. It was found that: (I) a given design of charge required an optimum standoff to make it most effective, either in penetrating solid rock or steel (see Fig 3); (2) for a given design of charge there exists an optimum ratio of charge diameter to charge height above which the increase in effectiveness of the charge decreases rapidly (see Figs 4 and 5); (3) partial confinement has the effect of making charge performance much more consistent; (4) the higher power and higher velocity explosives tested are much more effective than relatively low-strength explosives; and (5) shaped charges may be adaptable to mining operations in secondary breakage and drilling blasting holes. Fig I is a diagrammatic sketch of the action of a shaped charge for two types of cavities, while Fig 2 shows the approximate manner in which the jets are believed to be formed when an explosive wave encounters the cavity, approaching it from the top. The experimentation already completed has laid the foundation for further research in the study of shaped charges. Occupational exposure limits for diesel particular matter (DPM) are progressively being adopted in a number of countries. Many of these follow the lead of the US Mine Safety and Health Administration initiated in 2008. In line with adoption of best practice it is accepted that all exposures should be reduced to as low as reasonably achievable. The management of diesel emissions and occupational exposures to those emissions requires an integrated strategy incorporating efforts from all key departments on a mine, including management, production, maintenance, supply and occupational health and safety.Australian coalmine longwall moves rely on the use of high-powered diesel equipment such as chariots and other machines that produce exhaust pollutants of gases and DPM. To reduce mine personnel’s exposure levels to DPM a hierarchy of controls can be followed. Minimising the use of diesel equipment, better operator positioning in relation to exposure source, using efficient engineering methods and adopting better ventilation to reduce concentrations through dilution are some of the controls that can eliminate exposures. Approaches generally adopted in Australian longwall mines currently rely on a combination of strategies such as optimisation of ventilation, use of diesel particulate filters and use of diesel tag boards that minimise the number of vehicles through recording entry and exit into working panels.A study has been undertaken into the mine ventilation systems currently in use during longwall moves within Australian modern longwall extraction mines. This paper reviews current longwall section ventilation systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex problems in dealing with section DPM during phases of the operational moves. The effects of DPM on crew members as well as the diesel equipment operators within a longwall section are examined. A usina de beneficiamento da Unidade Vazante da Votorantim Metais concentra zinco a partir de Willemita – Zn2SiO4 por flotação. Através desse processo, é possível obter elevadas recuperações metalúrgicas. Contudo, foi identificado que é possível aumentar ainda mais a recuperação de zinco através de redução de granulometria. Essa redução eleva os custos de energia de um circuito de cominuição, fato que torna fundamental a identificação da relação ideal entre ganho de recuperação e os gastos com maior consumo de energia. Grande parte das frações de Willemita mais grosseiras (acima de 0,15 mm) que passam pelo processo de flotação, vão para o rejeito. Isso ocorre devido a granulometria atual de moagem não atingir a liberação ideal do mineral de interesse, de forma que, grande parte da superfície das partículas ainda apresenta ganga que não é adsorvida pelo coletor especifico da Willemita. Em busca de elevar a recuperação metálica de zinco potencializando o seu aproveitamento, estudos de caracterização mineralógica foram realizados. O trabalho consistiu na utilização de MEV/EDS com MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyzer) e na realização de testes de flotação em escala de bancada e piloto para determinar a granulometria ideal para flotação do mineral Willemita. Através dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que houve ganhos de recuperação de zinco com a redução da granulometria sem comprometer a qualidade do concentrado gerado.

"Using the calculated (Thermo-Calc software) and experimental methods (SEM, TEM, EMPA, DSC, XRD, etc.) the phase composition, structure and hardening of aluminium alloys of the Al-Ca-Zn-Mg system were studied in the following range: 2. 5%Mg, up to 10% Ca, and up to 14% Zn (wt%). Fragments of this quaternary phase diagram in the aluminium corner were constructed, including the liquidus surface, as well as some vertical sections. It was shown that the relatively large amount of zinc enters in the Ca-containing phase, which formula can be described as (Al,Zn)4Ca. An increase of Zn content leads to formation of Al4Ca primary crystals at lower concentrations of calcium. The eutectic (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca has a fine structure and aluminide particles are capable to spheroidization during the heat treatment at temperature 500 C. The maximal level of hardness observed on calcium containing alloys was higher than 200 HV, what gives the reason to expect good strength properties. With an example of an Al-9% Zn-2,5%Mg-3,5% Ca model experimental alloy based on the (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca eutectic, a principal possibility of manufacturing thin rolled sheets was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloyed with calcium was first studied in 1970-80s by such authors as Piatti (1976), Moore (1978, 1980), Il'enko (1985), Swaminathan (1990), and Perez-Prado (1997) as superplastic materials. In particular, the alloy systems Al-Ca-Zn were studied (Il'enko, 1985, Swaminathan, 1990, Perez-Prado, 1997). For some time there was no new published works concerning the aluminum-calcium alloys. During the last years many works were published dedicated to the calcium alloying of magnesium alloys (Kim, 2011; Xu, 2011; Aljarrah, 2008; Bakhsheshi, 2014). This urged the authors (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2016) to start studying cast and wrought aluminum-calcium alloys for construction (2008–2014). There is almost no information in the literature concerning triple and more complex diagrams of the aluminum-based system states with calcium and other elements. In recent work, parts of the state diagrams are plotted for the aluminum angle zone: Al-Ca-Mg-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2016), Al-Ca-Ni-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2017), Al-Ca-Si-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2017) and others. Special attention was paid to the study of the system Al-Ca-Zn-Mg (Naumova, 2017). Based on this system creation of advanced extra-high tensile alloys is planned. Wrought extra-high tensile alloys series 7??? based on the system Al-Zn-Mg-Cu are well studied."

The energy demand in India is expected to show increasing growth in the next few decades. The oil companies in India are revamping the existing oil refineries as well as constructing new refineries across the country to meet the energy demands. Most of the refineries in India are located along the coastal region because of the ease of transporting crude materials. Considering the criticality of the structures as well as soil conditions in the coastal region, pile foundations are used in refinery plants. In India, non-displacement piles in the form of bored cast-in-situ piles are used to support structures. In a few circumstances, displacement piles in the form of driven cast-in-situ piles are also being used to support critical structures. This study presents the performance of non-displacement and displacement piles for similar ground conditions at the same project location. The pile load test results have shown that the settlement observed for displacement piles is lower than compared to non- displacement piles for a given loading and soil conditions. This shows that the performance of displacement piles is slightly better in comparison with that of non-displacement piles.

The methods employed for the determination of oxides and oxygen in ferrous materials may be roughly classed in two groups, "wet" methods and "hot" methods, the first group including the iodine, electrolytic, mercuric chloride, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorine methods; the second group including the vacuum-fusion and hydrogen-reduction methods. The wet methods depend upon preferential solubility in a selected medium to separate the metallic portion of the sample from the oxygen-containing constituents. Subsequent analysis of the insoluble residue permits the isolation and separate determination of individual oxides and compounds. The hot methods depend upon the reduction of the oxide constituents of the sample by means of carbon or hydrogen at elevated temperatures. With the exception of the recently developed fractional vacuum-fusion method, the hot methods do not identify individual oxides and compounds but yield only a single value representing the sum of the oxygen contents of several or all of the oxide constituents present. With such diversity in the principles and aims of the different groups, it is not surprising that concordance of results by different methods has usually been difficult to obtain. The present cooperative attempt to define more rigorously than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and limits of usefulness of the various methods, originated in correspondence between Dr. John Johnston, Director of Research of the United States Steel Corporation, and other interested metallurgists. The plan was, briefly, to submit identical samples to a number of laboratories for analysis by different methods and to collate the results of these analyses. The project was endorsed by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at the annual meeting in February, 1933, and has been conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Iron and Steel Division and the National Bureau of Standards. Introduction In presenting this paper on the water-power resources of the Province of Manitoba, it was considered that a brief resume of the power resources of Canada, of the power already developed, and its utilization in the industries 9f the country, would be of particular interest in showing the rapid progress that has already been made. Amongst Canada's national assets, water power occupies a foremost place because of the facilities it provides for the development of her other great natural resources. The rapid development of the mining, pulp and paper, and general manufacturing industries, and the concomitant growth in urbanization, with its numerous demands for domestic, commercial, and municipal service power, have combined to stimulate hydraulic development to a point surpassing even the most sanguine predictions of a few years ago. With the bringing into operation during 1928 of hydraulic turbines aggregating over 550,300 h.p., and of a further 378,400 h.p. in 1929, Canada's total hydraulic development at the end of 1929 amounted to over 5,700,000 h.p., and in this year, 1930, the active construction in hydro-electric plants throughout the country totals in excess of 1,600,000 h .p.
