This paper, one of a series prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines discussing the methods used in mining, crushing, and grinding materials for cement manufacture, deals particularly with the methods used at the Security plant of the North American Cement Corporation. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of, total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

The effect of discontinuities on the fracturing and mechanical behavior of shale has been extensively investigated on a laboratory scale in previous works. It is well agreed that the lamination properties, including discontinuity and lamina properties, affect the behavior of shale. However, it is still unclear how the lamination properties are affecting the stability of the shale roof in an underground coal mine entry. This paper investigated the effect of lamination properties using the discrete element method on a mine-scale entry model as an extension to the previous work conducted on laboratory scale models.

"INTRODUCTION Peoples’ and operators’ safety in construction are tightly linked to the engineering choices, as much as the necessity of reducing time and costs of realization. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to address them properly from the earliest stage of the design, identifying the risks connected to the work and the variability of such during the different phases of the project. Risk is often measured as the expected value of an undesirable outcome. Regarding to occupational safety and health, the risk is the likelihood that a person may be harmed of suffers adverse health effects if exposed to a hazard. This combines the probabilities of various possible events and the assessment of the corresponding harm into a single value. However, the actual occurrences are often more complex than a single binary possibility case. In a real case scenario, with several possible accidents, the total risk is the sum of the risks for each different accident, provided that the outcomes are comparable. The semi-automatic tunnel support system along with its erector machine proved to be a solution with improved structural performance, able to reduce the time and yet to deliver an enhanced, quality-aware and safer working environment for the operators. The implementation of the system provides the engineers, the contractors and the owners with an effective alternative option shortlisted in 2015 for the ITA Award for the Safety Innovation of the Year. In a market industry driven by safety and time constrains the efficiency shall be the ultimate goal, in order to provide solutions able to negotiate with the most challenging ground conditions. In this paper, the authors describe the recent developments on regard of this whole new tunnel support system, including design approach and presenting related case histories OFFSETTING THE RISKS Considering the above factors, from the manufacturers’ point of view, an effective way to limit the construction risks is to focus on the material and technological characteristics, their application and the risks related to them including any residual risks. Finally addressing the construction needs also involves time and cost-effective solutions. The path to follow is an integrated approach where the efficient management of the risk is supported by a flexible, user-friendly, and time effective product that is able to provide a safe, reliable and viable solution to address the construction requirements. Therefore, in a market sector driven by safety and time constraints, the efficiency is a key goal, in order to avoid redundancy and yet to deliver a safe working environment able to meet the construction schedule. The safety of all the parties involved is given by stable working conditions, either for the workers, or the operators and eventually the public. Therefore, the solutions provided should ‘strengthen’ the overall condition and such “to limit or to reduce the deformations within acceptable designed limits and to prevent [the tunnel] to collapse” [1: Clause 207.1.4]."

MINING is one of the major industries of the Rocky Mountain region and since the United States became involved in the present World War, all mines have been called upon by the Government for the maximum production of the strategic metals necessary. Operating under the most adverse conditions, such as priority requirements, slow delivery of necessary material and equipment, labor shortages, and freezing of all wages, which still permitted some industries to pay higher rates than were allowable in the mines, thereby drawing labor from the mines; and the United States Employment Service continually giving mine labor certificates of availability; these and many other problems made mine operation particularly difficult. Yet, in spite of these obstacles, the mining industry, either through its own resources or through Government subsidies in the form of loans or premium prices for strategic metal, have and still are making an all-out effort to meet Government demands. They, without question, have played a major role in assisting the war effort.

Dr. Ledoux's interesting paper from one who has not visited America may, I hope, be of interest to members. It appears to me that there is considerable difference between the training of the American and of the British mining engineer. Not that the subjects are different, but rather in the way in which they are handled, the illustrations being, as far as possible, mining in character. Colloquial instruction is unknown in English curricula, but could be introduced with advantage. Students here assure me that an hour of conversation is of tar more use to them than an hour of the best lecturing. In England a school-year of 6 or 7 months would be considered very short indeed; but Americans do not consider it so, for the reason that the rest of the year is mostly spent in acquiring practical acquaintance with their subjects in works or in the field, and the shorter courses, when coupled with this large amount of outside expe¬rience, produce an essentially practical-minded engineer, who is also more of a business man; whereas the English system, though excellent from a scholastic point of view, produces the theoretical rather than the practical man. British schools are waking up, however, and the practical aspect of the engineer's training is receiving greater consideration. Once launched upon his career, the American engineer is immediately called upon to exercise his self-reliance and ingenuity, if he is to retain the confidence of his employers; but what can we say of English directors? The Bureau of Mines developed a process using amines for recovering tungsten as ammonium paratungstate from alkaline leach liquors without producing synthetic scheelite as an intermediate product. Over 90 pct of the tungsten in low-grade scheelite or ferberite concen-trate was recovered as ammonium paratungstate by (l) autoclave leaching the concentrate with Na2CO3, (2) solvent extraction of the acidified leach liquor with kerosine solutions of either a quaternary amine (Aliquat 336) or a primary amine (Primene JM-T), (3) stripping the tungsten values from the quaternary amine with ammoniacal NH4C1 or from the primary amine with NH4OH, and (4) crystallization of ammonium paratungstate from the strip liquor. Reagent consumption in pounds per pound of W03 recovered was, for the quater¬nary amine, 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4 , 2.2 NH4Cl, 1 NH3, and 0.4 glacial acetic acid; for the primary amine, it was 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4, .06 NH4Cl, and 0.9 NH3. Both reagents extract molybdenum along with tungsten. Silicate and phosphate are partly extracted and contaminate the product; leach liquors containing these impurities require preliminary purification.

During the last few years a type of coal called "splint coal" has been brought to the attention of the United States Bureau of Mines, through numerous inquiries concerning its nature. Until recent years it appears to have escaped general notice. The term "splint coal" is of long standing, but was thought to be merely another expression applied by the miner to coal having certain minor characteristics. When closely examined, however, these coals were found to form a marked and distinct type, with distinctive characteristics that cannot be mistaken. Because splint coals produce a hot cheerful flame, possess a clean blocklike nature, and have a high volatile content, they have lately become much valued for domestic, gas-producer and steaming purposes, and have attracted considerable attention. Mattkohle For many years we have heard from the Germans about Mattkohle and Streifenkohle, in contradistinction to Glanzkohle, but have not realized that they were of a different type from the coals with which we were most familiar. This type of coal was first brought to general notice by Muck, in 1881, who gave a good description of it.' Because this coal is often intercalated with thin sheets of brightly shining cod, Schondorff, who was more familiar with the Saar coals, called it Streifernkohle. This term was later used by Muck also. Still later Potoné² used this term exclusively for the whole group in contradistinction to a class called Glanzkohle, and considered these coals to be composed alternately of Humuskohle and Faulkohle or Mattkohle (Pig. 20). Not knowing the nature of the German coals and not realizing that the term Streifenkohle was applied to a distinct class of coal, the terms of its components as used by Potonié and others were translated to "bright Coal" and "dull coal" and applied to the components of our

In addition a novel Thermal Analysis methodology was developed for the on-line determination of the microstructure modification level.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is developing a disposal strategy for radioactive wastes, which contain significant amounts of uranium, cesium, and mercury. There are safety and economic incentives for the extraction of these elements before permanent storage in deep underground repositories. In addition, the actinide elements are also an important component in rare earth element (REE) ores and considered as impurities. Actinides separation from REE tailings is a significant concern in order to manage radioactive nuclides. Reprocessing mine wastes may present significant financial and environmental benefits. Experiments were carried out with radioactive cemented wastes (RCW) prepared at CanmetMINING. For all of the tested RCW batches, solubilisation yields are above 97% for Cs and 98% for U and Hg. Sulphuric acid leaching with potassium iodide improved the solubilisation of Hg by oxidation and formation of the tetraiodide complex (e.g. HgI4 2-, Kf = 2.1030). Cs and Hg were removed selectively by using potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (KCFC) and Lewatit TP214 ion-exchange resin respectively. U recovery using the chelating resin Lewatit TP260 was the most efficient. The presence of high iodine concentration improved the U uptake by the resin. The best U elution was obtained using 1 M Na2CO3, which resulted in 99% U recovery. U was then precipitated as sodium diuranate. A counter current effluent recirculation was performed successfully on RCW. The process was also applied to submerged tailings collected from two U mines and an REE ore. THE Ajo copper district is in the heart of the Arizona desert, near the western boundary of Pima county. Gila Bend, the nearest railroad point, is 43 miles north of the camp, and the little Mexican border town of Sonoita is 30 miles south. Between Gila Bend and Sonoita, Ajo is the only settlement save for one or two small cattle ranches and the uncertain villages of nomadic Papago families. The Little Ajo mountains rise a few hundred feet above wide desert valleys, beyond which are lava mesas. The camp itself lies at an elevation of about 1,900 ft. above sea level, in a little basin on the east side of the range, separated from the open desert by low hills. In the center of the basin the brilliantly iron and copper stained rocks of Copper mountain rise 150 ft. above -the village. Many varieties of cactus and low desert bushes cover the hills, while in the large valleys there are clusters of mesquite paloverde, and ironwood trees which furnish limited amounts of fairly good fuel. A scanty supply of water is obtained from wells in the desert and from prospect pits in the camp. The nearest abundant source of water is the Gila river, 50 miles north of Ajo. (See Fig. 1.) HISTORY OF THE AJO DISTRICT The Ajo, next to Santa Rita, New Mexico, is claimed to have been the first copper district in the Southwest worked by Americans. In the '60's or even earlier high-grade native copper and cuprite Ore was mined from shallow surface workings and hauled by bull team 400 miles across the desert to San Diego. From there it was carried in sailing ships to Swansea, Wales. Later, the ore was hauled to Yuma, floated down the Colorado river to the Gulf Of California, and shipped to Swansea. Bat-infested old workings and the massive axles of the bull carts are shown to prove the truth of the stories.

About 100 million terajoule is used annually worldwide to overcome friction and that is one fifth of all energy produced. The largest quantities of energy are used by industry (29%) and in transportation (27%). Based on our recent studies on energy use in passenger cars, trucks and buses, we concluded that it is possible to save as much as 17.5% of the energy use in road transports in the short term (5-9 years) by effective implementation of new tribological solutions. This equals to annual energy savings of 11.6 exajoules, fuel savings of 330 billion liters and reduction in CO2 emission by 860 million tonnes. In a paper mill, 15-25% of the energy used is spent to overcome friction. The electrical energy used by a paper machine is distributed as 32% to overcome friction, 36% for the paper production and mass transportation, and 32% is other losses. In paper machines, 11% of the total energy used to overcome friction can be saved by the implementation of new tribological technologies. This would result in electrical energy savings worldwide of 130,000 terajoule, economic cost savings of 2 billion euros and CO2 emission reduction of 11 million tonnes annually. An overview of the total energy saving potential by improved tribology in transportation and industry is presented.

One response for many companies has been to modify their mine accounting systems to make them more effective for cost control and decision-making. The Chilean Congress has recently promoted desalination as a solution to meet the mining industry’s growing water demand. However, this rapid expansion of desalination infrastructure comes with trade-offs. This includes a significant energy cost for treatment, as well as socio-environmental impacts on indigenous communities, tourism, fisheries, and the marine ecosystem. This paper advances a regional-scale model for analyzing competing trade-offs through a case study in the Antofagasta mining region of Chile. Through geospatial data analysis in ArcGIS, new desalination infrastructure investments supplying water to mines are overlain with features of concern raised by communities during the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process, such as national parks, fisheries and exploitation areas for benthonic resources. The resultant model provides a test-bed for analyzing the cumulative effects associated with desalination expansion and for investigating scenarios to mitigate negative social-environmental impacts. The model simulates alternative scenarios for desalination locations and pipeline routes according to competing constraints (i.e. to minimize cost and energy constraints while also avoiding ecological and social hotspots). The ultimate contribution of the work is a demonstration of how the proactive adoption of a regional-scale infrastructure planning might have led to different desalination investment decisions. INTRODUCTION Chile represents the largest producer of copper globally, and holds approximately a third of the world’s estimated copper reserves. However, access to water represents a major constraint to industry expansion and creates conflicts with competing water users (Aitken et al., 2016; Côte et al., 2010). Recently, the Chilean Congress has promoted desalination as a solution to meeting the industry’s growing water demand, which is likely to lead to significant growth in desalination infrastructure to support large-scale mining projects that extract freshwater over a rate of 150 l/s1. By most recent projections, the Chilean copper mining sector is set to increase seawater use by 230% by 2029 (Faversham House Group Ltd, 2019). By the year 2015, Chile had 11 projects serving the mining industry and there are at least other 12 planned plants (Cochilco, 2015). While the use of seawater allows continued expansion of the sector without depletion of scarce underground aquifers, it is nonetheless accompanied with important socio-environmental drawbacks. One such challenge with desalination is the associated energy costs, expressed, both economic and environmental (e.g., CO2 emissions). This includes the energy required for reverse osmosis treatment facilities, as well as to pump water to inland regions at high elevations around 3.100 m.a.s.l in Chile. (Dixon, 2013; Knops et al., 2013). Additionally, the impacts of desalinated water use on flotation chemistry are generally poorly understood, necessitating the need for further research into the impacts, both positive and negative (Cisternas and Gálvez, 2018; Liu et al., 2011).

The Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace (ISF) of the Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited zinc/lead smelter at Cockle Creek, New South wales, has in recent years greatly increased its consumption of low grade feed materials, and as a consequence has experienced periods of unstable furnace operation. Routine examination of production sinter, including softening characteristics and micro- examination, showed that the problems had been caused by an increasing silica content in sinter. The silica entered a low melting point glass phase containing calcium and lead oxides. The relative volume of this phase increased until it formed a continuous matrix in the sinter structure and this made the sinter more likely to soften at lower temperatures. Premature softening caused loss of operating stability in both the shaft and hearth of the ISr. The required sinter structure for ISF smelting was found to consist of a network of intermeshing, refractory crystals which provided skeletal strength for sinter lumps even after the glass phases had begun to soften and melt. With an understanding of the importance of microstructure and softening temperature of zinc/lead sinter and the progressive identification of those factors in sinter production which affect the microstructure, a significant improvement in stability of operations has been possible.

The history and development of the FMC Coke process has been reported in numerous presentations over the past 10 years (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) but a short review is desirable, especially regarding the aspects that are influenced by the coal to be used. F'MC has been developing this process in pilot facilities since 1956 and in a modest sized plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming since 1960 (Figure I). This plant produces strong uniformly sized coke briquettes from a completely non-coking coal, namely Elkol, a sub-bituminous coal of the Adaville seam. Since operating commercially, over 300,000 tons have been produced, 90% of which has been used in electric phosphorus furnaces and some 10% of which went for trials in iron blast furnaces. We believe that this commercial use of non-coking coals is a unique experience in the history of coke manufacture.

Few elements have received more attention and developed greater interest in the last ten years than titanium. The substantially pure metal has been din...ie. cult to isolate, and so far has been little employed oommercially, but the use af alloys and chemical compounds of titanium has increased markedly in recent years. The earlier attempts at preparing pure titanium resulted in various impure forme which, from their metallic appearance, were always mistaken for the metal. Hunter in 1910 isolated pure titanium by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with sodium. This brief statement is issued by the Bureau of Mines in response to numerous inquiries which have been received concerning titanium. More complete in. formation on the metal may be had by consulting the referenpes appended. The Literature is voluminous and only the more important references are Riven. It has been drawn upon freely in preparing this report; also information was supplied by M. g. Hunter, Arthur Braid, M 1. Schmid, C. M. Johnson, N. B. Hoffman, and de Courny Browne. "IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to discuss in a general way the heavy oil situation in Western Canada, and particularly to acquaint those in the oil industry who have not participated in the heavy oil end of the business with past and current developments. The author has covered •briefly the location of the heavy •and asphalt-base oil fields, their geology, current drilling and production practice, the location of the •refineries capable of handling heavy crude, their products and markets, and the problems and future prospects of the industry.Location and Description of FieldsThe term heavy oil is generally used to denote crude of 20.9° gravity and under. Since the products from heavy oil are also to a lesser extent obtained from asphalt-base crudes of higher gravity, some mention will be made here of the latter; but in general the emphasis of the paper is on heavy oil as such.In the order of their production to date, the heavy oil fields and those light oil fields which produce asphalt-base crudes are : Lloydminster, Taber, Vermilion, Conrad, Princess, and Wainwright.The Lloydminster oil field has not only produced most of the heavy oil, but also is currently the largest producer, supplying at the present time about 80 per cent of the heavy and asphalt-base crudes produced in Western Canada."

IN the last 15 years industrial use of ground water has more than doubled, and in 1951 amounted to 5 billion gallons per day. A similar sharp increase in the utilization of ground water for irrigation and public-water supply occurred in the same period. In many areas rapid increase in withdrawal from wells has taken place almost entirely unhampered by regulatory control and with little or no integration of effort. As might be expected, the chief interest in many regions has been maximum production rather than sustained perennial yield. As a result, widespread depletion of underground reservoirs and deterioration of the quality of the water stored in them has taken place in many areas, even though total pumpage in the United States is far below ultimate potential. Of even more concern is the fact that excessive withdrawal has drawn salt water into the reservoirs beneath many heavily populated centers along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts, causing costly abandonment of pumping plants.' Many hydrologists expect that consumption of water will rise rapidly in the near future, and some predict that industrial requirements will more than double in the next decade.2,3 Thus it appears likely that the draft on many already heavily pumped underground reservoirs will be greatly increased and the search for additional sources of usable ground water intensified in years to come. In view of this, industry as a whole will be forced more and more to recognize the potentialities and limitations of ground-water reservoirs and to utilize them more effectively to prevent costly water shortages and disruption of production. Through painful experience, some industries are already well aware of the need for effective water utilization, and have managed individually or through joint effort to check trends threatening to deplete underground reservoirs completely or to impair the quality of the water. Various remedial measures have been used to bring about successful management of local or regional ground-water resources. Of these, replen-ishment of aquifers by recharge wells or basins has played an important role in overcoming some ground water problems. Artificial recharge of underground reservoirs by water spreading has been practiced successfully in the United States for many years. In the West it has become an important method of salvaging flood run-off for irrigation of crops and maintenance of public water-supply reserves, and it is used to some extent in parts of the East. Artificial recharge by means of wells, on the other hand, is a relatively new development. Until recently it was employed in only a few areas, principally along the East coast. For the last few years, in the ever increasing search for additional water supplies, industry has had greater recourse to this method. Utilization of recharge wells to control the temperature and quality of underground water supplies is also being considered seriously. Operation of recharge wells, like water spreading, is governed largely by local conditions. It requires water relatively low in turbidity, whereas in some areas water spreading has been used successfully with water of high turbidity and silt content. However, water spreading must be employed in large areas and can be carried on effectively only where aquifers crop out at the surface. Recharge wells can be used in limited space. Recharge wells are similar to production wells except that the water flows in the opposite direction. Thus any water-bearing bed that will yield water to wells may be recharged by wells. Often, however, the water available for recharge is of a different character and temperature from that existing in the ground-water reservoir and if transmitted directly underground from a recharge well to a production well might require expensive or difficult treatment before it could be used. Fortunately the physical characteristics of reservoir beds, which control the movement and behavior of ground water, are generally not homogeneous. Moreover, the movement of ground water is very slow because of the frictional resistance of the reservoir beds. By taking full advantage of hydrologic and geologic conditions, it is therefore possible in many instances to bring about favorable changes of temperature and dilution as the water moves from the recharge wells underground to the production wells. Furthermore, if the natural quality or temperature of ground water is unfavorable for industrial purposes, recharge wells may be used to introduce water of more favorable quality or temperature into the ground-water reservoir. When water is discharged into a recharge well, the head in the well is increased. Because of this, a cone of elevation is produced on the water table or the artesian pressure surface in the area surrounding the well. The cone of elevation is similar to the cone of depression produced around a pumping well except that the apex of the cone is above the water table or artesian pressure surface. Thus if a recharge well and a production well tapping the same water-bearing bed are close together, as would be the case at many industrial plants, some of the water discharged from the recharge well would be drawn into the production well within a short time. Under such conditions it is apparent that water of unfavorable temperature and chemical characteristics should not be used for recharging. The more important ground-water reservoirs in the United States often consist of alternating layers of impermeable beds and porous material that will yield water readily to wells. Physical characteristics of individual beds in a ground-water reservoir may not persist over great distances, the impermeable layers grading into beds that will yield large quantities of water.
