Thank you very much for that introduction. I spent part of my early career in the coal industry here in Colorado, and I am always happy to return. In such a beautiful setting, it seems out of place to talk about "Improving the Climate". But in our work-a-day worlds, we know the climate for the coal industry is something less than picture perfect. But unlike Mother Nature's climate, there are some things we can do about the climate for coal. Today, I want to talk to you about sonic of the activities that we are engaged in... and that you can support... to improve that climate. A number of challenges and opportunities face our industry. I will try to set the stage for this conference by briefly describing the current climate for coal - which is indeed very challenging. I will then outline some of the steps we are taking to broaden our base to include our allies in the rail and electricity industries and the public at large.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) are of growing interest in a wide variety of applications. Pattern recognition, speech processing, financial analysis, signal processing and process control are at present the most successful ones. This paper is an attempt to illustrate the potentiality of ANN applied to mineral processing. An introduction to the technology of ANN is first proposed to describe the various components and to explain the various phases encountered in setting up a network. Then examples are given to illustrate the use of ANN dynamic modelling of mineral processing units or plants and in process control.

Process Systems Engineering (PSE) can be defined as the integrated usage of computer-based design and analysis tools. As such, PSE is becoming increasingly important in the chemical and petrochemical industries. This paper shows how a range of PSE techniques have been applied to the zinc electrowinning process. Topics discussed include model development, parameter estimation, steady-state and dynamic model applications, steady-state optimisation and neural network modelling.

The Highlands Region of Papua New Guinea has 3 major national highways. The locations of these national highways are shown in Figure 1. The Highlands Highway begins at Lae City on the coast and passes through the Highlands towns of Goroka, Kundiawa and Mt Hagen. It terminates at Togoba approximately 10km out of Mt Hagen town. The Enga Highway begins at Togoba and passes through the towns of Wapenamanda, Wabag and Laiagam. It terminates at the giant Porgera Gold Mine. The Southern Highlands Highway also begins at Togoba and passes through the major towns of Mendi, and Tari. It terminates at Koroba station, near the Hides Gas Field. Two separate Feeder roads intersecting the main highway service both the Kutubu Oil Project and the Hides Gas Field. These national Highways play a very important role in the development of Papua New Guinea. Goods and services are delivered to the bulk of the population of the Highlands Region using these highways. Heavy machinery and equipment for the mining and petroleum projects of Porgera, Hides and Kutubu are transported using these roads.

THE many kinds of iron and steel may be grouped into two general classes. First, there are the common steels and cast irons, made in enormous tonnages each year and used for the construction of buildings, ships and bridges, for pipe, for reinforced concrete highways, for the so-called tin cans, and by the railroads and other industries for which a low cost material is suitable. Second, there are the alloy steels and alloy cast irons, which are alloys of the chemical element iron and one or more of a large number of special elements such as manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, vanadium, tungsten, and molybdenum. Alloy steels and irons are more costly than the common grades but their higher cost is, for many applications, justified by their superior properties, leading to ultimate economies or other advantages. They may be harder, stronger, tougher, or more resistant to rusting than the common varieties, and so are extensively used for tools, for ornamental work on buildings and in the automotive, aircraft, and other industries for, which the higher cost is compensated for by the higher quality.

A tentative plan for the Colorado Meeting has been formulated as follows: One day will be spent at Denver, one day at Colorado Springs, one day at Cripple Creek, a trip by automobile to the top of Pike's Peak, one day at Pueblo, one day at Leadville. All the principal mines and mills of the districts mentioned will be visited, including the gold mines in Cripple Creek, the lead, zinc, and steel works. of Pueblo, the production of ferro-molybdenum by electric furnace at Leadville, etc. Special arrangements are being made for the social entertainment of ladies at all points; one evening at Colorado Springs will be devoted to a reception and dance, and the usual dinner will he given on another evening. The Rawley property is located in the Kerber Creek mining-district, Saguache county, Colorado, at an elevation of 10,600 ft. (See sketch-map, Fig. 1.) Ore was found in this vicinity as early as 1880, and claims covering a large area were located and in many instances patented. The ores, however, being of comparatively low grade, and the nearest railway station, Villa Grove, being some 20 miles away, it is extremely doubtful whether any considerable amount of ore was ever handled at a profit. It is safe to say that several hundred thousand dollars were spent (a large part in building mills) previous to 1902-03. About that time a very capable promoter gathered together a group of these claims and interested some New York people, who had had no previous mining experience, in the purchase of these claims. Following the organization of a company, this promoter became General Manager. As often happens under such conditions, the first step was to erect a mill to treat 100 tons per day. It may not be fair to this enterprise to say that the failure which followed might have been foretold, simply on general principles, but this much is certain—the water supply fluctuates in the course of a season through a wide range and for a considerable portion of the year was inadequate to run this mill at capacity. Further, it is currently reported that some of the mill foundations were placed on ice. However true this statement may be, it is a fact that, when first inspected by us, many of the belts in the mill were held on'their pulleys by means of idlers. A shut-down followed, with a material re-adjustment of interests, at which time we became consulting engineers for the company.

The present study examines the use of two vs. one stage of hydrocyclones in a pilot scale ball mill circuit. The approach used for doing this is based on computer simulation with mathematical models that explicitly account for the grinding mill/classification system interaction. Parameters for the ball mill model are obtained using a short-lived radioactive tracer method in open circuit tests of the study mill. The hydrocyclone model, based on the size selectivity concept, is developed and validated in standalone testing of the study hydrocyclones. Simulation procedures are validated through actual tests of the closed circuit grinding configurations of interest. Results of the evaluation indicate that two stages of hydrocyclones in the study circuit would improve classification, increase productivity and lead to more closely sized circuit products when compared to the conventional one stage hydrocyclone circuit. A computer simulation approach for comparing these circuit configurations in larger scale grinding circuits is also suggested.

The paper describes a case study where numerical modelling has been applied to predict potential risks associated with inflows of water in active mine workings from an overlying sandstone aquifer. The objective of the modelling was to predict the development of strata fractures and strains as the longwall panels were extracted and investigate their relationship to an sandstone aquifer. The numerical modelling study also included the investigation of the effect of mining on a fault that existed close to the start position of one of the panels. The potential effects of mining on the fault were undertaken by parametric studies adjusting properties for the fault and the relative position of extractions, which allowed the mine planner to position the panel layout accordingly.

"The depositional model for major Illinois Basin coalbeds is well documented and defined on a regional scale. The model was a driving force during past exploration for lower sulfur and thicker coal deposits. The most attractive coal reserves were known to lie along the flanks of contemporaneous sandstone filled stream channels and were overlain by thick silty gray shale roof. At various distances away from the channels, the depositional model transitioned to black shale I limestone roof, sulfur content of the coal bed increased, and the coal bed often thinned. Understanding the character of roof rock types associated with this depositional model is essential to predicting ground control factors on both a regional scale, and on resolving roof control problems at the mine-site. Additionally, horizontal stress and overburden depth are significant factors that impact roof rock quality and ground control in Illinois Basin mines.Determining the character of several rock types, and defining the primary horizontal stress direction were crucial to a recent successful project at New Future Mine, located in southern Illinois. An inclined slope was constructed from the Illinois No. 5 Coalbed up to the Illinois No. 6 Coalbed through strata that ranged from extremely weak ""stackrock"" and a weak underclay unit, to a massive sandstone unit. Engineering geology, operations management, and Jennmar technical services personnel teamedup to select and install roof support for each strata transition. The project was completed with no injuries and no roof falls.INTRODUCTIONAbundant published information concerning coal deposition, geographic distribution, quantity, quality, and mining conditions exists for Illinois Basin coal reserves. The State of Illinois, through its State Geological Survey (ISGS), has provided decades of research, record keeping, and service to the coal industry. Other excellent sources of Illinois Basin coal information include the Indiana Geologiq1l Survey and the Kentucky Geological Survey. Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) supplemented the work by the geological surveys, especially in the area of horizontal stress and mining hazards. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continues to produce publications focused on roof control issues common to many coal basins, including the Illinois Basin. Many of the illustrations in this paper originated in ISGS and USBM publications."

Residual viscosity, the ViSCOSitY at a given pressure and temperature minus the dilute gas viscosity at the same temperature, has been found to be independent of temperature for pure components and mixtures for simple molecules and light hydrocarbons. The residual viscosities for methane, ethane, propane and four mixtures were correlated as a function of reduced density and molecular weight. INTRODUCTION Earlier efforts in correlating the viscosity of light hydrocarbons and associated gases under pressure, primarily by some form of the corresponding states principle, have been reported elsewhere.7 The formal theory of corresponding states principle for viscosity from non-equilibrium statistical mechanical arguments for simple molecules has been developed by Helfand and Rice.13 The most serious obstacle to the development of a generalized corresponding states representation of viscosity data, even for simple molecules, has been the limited quantity of precise viscosity data of pure components and mixtures over a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions. Viscosity data on light hydrocarbons have recently been contributed by several laboratories.2,6,8,23,25,26 In the study of the viscosity of nitrogen, Michels and Gibson" observed that the viscosities of nitrogen as a function of density gave parallel isotherms. The same behavior has since been reported for other gases.".= The observed behavior indicates that the residual viscosity or the viscosity at a given pressure and temperature minus the dilute gas viscosity at the same temperature is a unique function of the density. Abas-Zade,1 Michels and Botzen,18 and Michels, Bot-Zen, Friedman and Sengers,19 observed similar behavior for thermal conductivity, the residual thermal conductivity being defined in a manner parallel to that of residual viscosity. Thodos and co-workers 4,15,24 applied the residual viscosity concept to the viscosity of pure monatomic and diatomic gases. Ellington and co-workers10,25 made the residual viscosity vs density plots for ethane and propane, but omitted the region below a residual viscosity of 15 micropoise and showed a systematic separation of the ethane isotherms in the low density region. Eakin correlated the residual viscosity of methane, ethane, propane and n-butane empirically as a function of density and molecular weight: Carmichael and Sage6 recently presented ethane residual viscosity vs density values in the gaseous liquid, and near critical regions as a single univariant function of density. Flynn, Hanks, Lemaire and ROSS" have contributed extremely accurate viscosity data to confirm that the residual viscosity concept is essentially correct, but may not be accurate within 0.1 per cent of the viscosity value for the gaseous state- The recent studies by Giddings12 indicate that the residual viscosity of methane, propane and each of four methane-propane mixtures are unique functions of density Over the temperature and the density ranges studied.

Tats paper deals with work that has been carried on for over three years by the management and staff of the North Butte Mining Co. in an effort to standardize mining methods, to eliminate lost motion in the operating organization, and to improve the efficiency of the individual workman. Naturally, much of this work is an adaptation of ideas suggested by other mining operations or by practice in manufacturing and other productive industries. The studies, however, have developed some features that it is believed are new. Both new and adapted features are given in detail. The normal capacity of the North Butte mines is about 2000 tons per. day. Hoisting is done principally through the Granite Mountain shaft, which is 3740 ft. (1140 m.) deep and equipped with an electric hoist capable of hoisting 200 tons per hour from a depth of 4000 ft. (1219 m.). The lowest stoping level is the 3400-ft. The Granite Mountain shaft is connected with the Speculator shaft, about 850 ft. (259 m.) south, and with the Gem, about 1150 ft. (350 m.) east, which are 3000 (914.4 m.) and 2000 ft. (609.6 m.). deep, respectively. These two shafts are equipped with reversible fans for ventilation. The Speculator has a; steam hoist with a capacity of 150 tons per hour from the 3000-ft. level. The Granite Mountain shaft is concrete lined from the 1600-ft. to below the 3000-ft. level and gunited with cement from the 1600-ft. level to the surface. Sections of the Speculator shaft with a total combined length of 500 ft. (152.4 m.) are also concreted. There are approximately 36 miles (58 km.) of drifts and crosscuts in the mine, in which there are 15.2 miles (24.5 km.) of track. At normal capacity, about 75 stoping faces, 20 raises, and 30 sill development faces are working. Stoping is usually by the standard square-set method. Where the size of the oreshoot and character of. the walls permit, the rill (or cut-and-fill) system is employed.

As part of the Goldcorp Inc growth plan Minera Peñasquito SA de CV has developed its polymetallic deposit with a large ?state of the art? concentrator to process lead and zinc ores. The plant consists of two grinding lines including 38ft diameter SAG mills and 24ft diameter ball mills. During mid to late 2009 concentrator commissioning activities commenced. First concentrates were produced in October 2009 and now the plant is meeting its design basis of 65,000 mtpd per line. This paper describes the design and operational experience to date for its grinding circuit design, together with the recently commissioned HPGR crushing circuit.

Kansas continued holding, for its seventh year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The crude-oil production, according to purchaser's reports to the State Corporation Commission, was 40,008,940 bbl.; as assembled by the Oil and Gas Journal, 41,305,768, and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 41,942,000 barrels. Increase of production from 1932 was largely due to greater stability of the industry, and increased return of demand for Kansas oil, caused by the addition of Federal assistance in national production regulation which reduced illegal production, of some areas out of Kansas, that had been destructively competing with Kansas crude or its refined products, at less than cost of production. Prices continued to advance from the lowest level of 25c per barrel during part of May and June, until by the end of September 36" gravity crude had reached $1 per barrel and continued at this price the remainder of the year. Price stability, for a period greater than in previous years, has brought renewed confidence to those producing oil and has led to renewed interest and increased purchases of Kansas leases. Drilling was confined chiefly to the number of wells necessary to protect from offset and other drainage in the field and to meet the requirements of expiring lease contract deeper areas in Mid-Continent, are an added inducement to exploration. The renewal of interest in the search for new fields in Kansas is already apparent and 1934 will probably see more wildcatting than for several years. This is due both to the expiration of leases on large blocks and to actual demand of the industry for new fields. Exploration for favorable areas is being actively conducted by the various methods of surface, subsurface and core drilling and geophysical work. Much of western Kansas cannot be mapped by surface study and geophysical exploration has been of considerable assistance and has led to a large use of the seismograph. Several companies are conducting seismograph surveys and leasing on findings already secured. Development under the more favorable conditions of 1933 can be readily seen by the comparison of the following reports for the last weeks of December in the respective years.

The understanding of particle surface properties is essential for the study and evaluation of froth flotation phenomena, particularly in the investigation of various chemical or reagent effects. Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) is a method used for the analysis of surface properties of powders for instance in the pharmaceutical industry. To the knowledge of the authors, it has however not been used before in applications related to mineral processing. The DVS technique involves measurement of the water uptake of a relatively small amount of sample as a function of the relative humidity (% RH) in a temperature-controlled environment. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the method and investigate how it can complement existing techniques for surface characterization in mineral processing. Four samples (feed, CuPb concentrate, Cu concentrate and Pb concentrate) from the Cu – Pb flotation process in the Garpenberg concentrator, Sweden, were analyzed by DVS and the traditional capillary absorption technique (Washburn capillary rise). This enabled comparison between the two methods and evaluation of their respective advantages and disadvantages. Both methods give the expected ranking of the hydrophobicity for CuPb concentrate, Cu concentrate and Pb concentrate, but a discrepancy was observed for the feed. Washburn gave a value for the contact angle which was in the same range as for the CuPb concentrate, whereas DVS gave a value for the moisture uptake which was much higher than for the CuPb concentrate. Thus, DVS ranks all samples correctly, but with an unexpectedly high value for the feed whereas Washburn gives good ranking for three samples out of four. Potential reasons for the discrepancies are discussed.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile and zircon has disturbed over 1000 ha of prime farmland in Virginia (USA) since 1997 and additional areas are likely to be disturbed in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 15 years. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc. and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical and social issues. Early on, the return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production was complicated by vertical stratification of tails + slimes and lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and by limited topsoil return. Virginia Tech and Iluka have worked cooperatively with all stakeholders for over 20 years to review the pre-existing research base, conduct new and innovative site-specific research and thereby provide reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. In 2004, Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45 ha research demonstration farm where the long-term effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Row crop yields between 2005 and 2010 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75 - 80 per cent of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. The state regulatory authority has recently relaxed its position on the necessity of topsoil return versus use of topsoil substitutes based on appropriate on-site research results and the ability of the reclaimed soils to meet comparative local county crop yield targets. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry. Post-mining land use for the production of industrial crops has the potential to mitigate environmental and socio-economic impacts of mine closure and stimulate post-mining economic growth. Fibre-rich plants are of particular interest due to their multi-product potential. In the South African context, where there are many abandoned and end-of-life mines near human settlements, an opportunity presents to assess the feasibility of transforming post-mining land into productive land and building resilient communities through the development of multi-product value chains from fibre-rich plants such as kenaf, hemp or bamboo. This paper provides an overview of the plant selection criteria, phytoremediation potential and the downstream options for the recovery of products and value from bast fibre plants (hemp and kenaf) and bamboo. Based on findings from a comprehensive review of the published literature, as well as interviews with relevant experts within South Africa, it appears that bast fibre plants are the best downstream option for producing ‘green’ textiles and high-end niche products, whereas bamboo is more suitable as a replacement for conventional timber. Although fibre plants have the potential to extract metals from soils, high concentrations may inhibit plant growth and affect the quality of the final fibre product. Further site-specific studies would thus be required to select the best route for both land remediation and optimal product recovery. The release of these data would benefit the mining industry as a whole. Particularly valuable would be the details of drilling programs that have been tested by actual mining operations, as most of the available published material is unsupported by production records. The scope of this paper is limited to a few of the commonest problems of interpreting diamond-drill core and sludge samples and the deviation of holes. It does not include the description of routine operations performed by the drillers, nor the estimation of ore reserves. The methods of calculating reserves have been described,25,26,31,32,50,65 but more informa- tion is needed on the results shown by actual mining operations. Core Sampling The accuracy of diamond-drill-hole Sampling depends in large measure on the percentage of core recovery. As a general rule, the longer the run, the poorer is the recovery. Although the longer runs allow cheaper drilling costs, the determining factor should be the percentage of recovery desired. The problem is one of balancing accuracy against costs. Holes of larger diameter may show improved recovery, except as Joralemon* points out that there are some conditions in which small holes give better core recovery than large holes. This is particularly true, he says; in rocks like shattered quartzite, where larger core tends to break in angular fragments and grind up, while the diameter of smaller core is less than the distance between joint planes and grinding is not so serious. In a large measure the length of the sample run should depend on the type of deposit. Favorable drilling may allow uniform sample runs of 5 ft., 10 ft., or perhaps 20 ft. In veins or beds of relatively narrow widths and changing characteristics, however, the ore zone may be overrun and ground in a core barrel full of waste rock. Generally it is desirable to break the sample at a change in the rock or ore. Such a change; often indicated by a color change in the sludge water, should be a a for the driller to make a "dry" block and to pull out that run regardless of the length. Research, primarily, is finding out the truth. Research applied to enigeering opens the door to new principies and processes, the application of which benefits mankind in a material way. The engineer believes that investigation instituted with the primary view of making the results directly applicable to the industries is the highest type of research. Coal is essentially the basis of modern industrial civilization; therefore, any considerable research pertaining to coal must link itself to the industry by practical application of the results of the research. In other words, all investigational work connected in any way with coal leads to conclusions that permit a better understanding of the origin, nature of occurrence, composition, better and safer mining, more careful preparation, or greater efficiency in utilization of coal. Modern engineering research has been fostered essentially by universities and in the laboratories of institutions of learning. Coal problems that lend themselves to solution in the laboratories have been first attacked and are perhaps the farthest toward solution. For example, a great amount of research work has been carried out with the various phases of chemistry connected with coal. On the other hand, the equally important problems connected with methods of mining have received but little attention, primarily because their solution involves the continued use of a great and expensive laboratory, which is none other than the mine itself. As many of the problems already solved have had chemistry as their background, so many of the problems unsolved have physics as their background; there are also unsolved problems that deal in coal economics. Even psychology must be called upon in future coal-mining research as a basis for solving those great problems that deal with human relationships. 'In general, considerable advance has been made in coal research dealing with chemistry, not so much progress has been made with problems having physics and engineering as a background, while there is a tremendous range of untouched problems that deal essentially with business and psychology. The Outotec nickel matte chloride leaching process is especially suitable for small capacity standalone nickel refineries. The matte is leached with hydrochloric acid and oxygen in multiple steps in atmospheric OKTOP® reactors. Oxygen feed prevents reductive conditions and hydrogen formation in the leaching process. A sufficiently high acid concentration keeps the iron dissolved in the solution. The iron is removed after leaching by precipitation and the pregnant leach solution continues to metals recovery. The metals recovery from the chloride solution is done by solvent extractions, where ammonia is used for pH control. Copper and nickel are stripped from the organic phases into sulphate solutions. Metals can be recovered from the purified solution by conventional electrowinning. Other alternatives are precipitation or hydrogen reduction processes. The ammonium chloride in the solvent extraction raffinate is regenerated into ammonia. The calcium chloride solution from ammonia regeneration is routed to acid regeneration where sulphuric acid is added and ultra-pure gypsum is precipitated.
