Exploration was active in East and East Central Texas during 1944. Ten oil fields were discovered during the year, of which four show promise of development. The discovery wells of the Sand Flat and Tyler, South fields were drilled to a depth greater than 10,000 ft., and the latter field now produces from the Pettit at a depth of 9890 ft. The Sand Flat well was plugged back to the Paluxy. The other two fields are Glen Rose producers near 8000 ft. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime and Winnsboro from the Rodessa section. The Eylau field, Bowie County, was significant as the first Smackover production in Texas. Magnolia drilled a test in the Concord field, which topped salt. The most extensive and significant development in the district was the Carthage gas-condensate field. It expanded from the 8000 acres of last year to an estimated 190,000 acres, or about 300 sq. miles, and is not defined as yet. The first oil production in the Carthage area was made from the Travis Peak in 1944 in the Rogers Lacy's Cameron Lumber Company well No. I, on the northwestern side of the field. The New Hope field, Franklin County, scored the largest number of completions during 1944 with 24, bringing its total number of wells to 27. Two more pays were opened and produced as dual completions with the older horizons. The Manziel field, Wood County, had 19 new wells added during the year, for a total of 29, while the Pittsburgh field, Camp County, reached a total of 23 wells by completing 14 new ones. Material shortages and drilling restrictions dropped the total number of producing wells completed in the district from 171 during 1943 to 141 for 1944. Abandonments increased from 531 during 1943 to 609 for 1944. Of this number, 479 were in the East Texas field. Subsidy payments had very little effect in the district and it was mostly a few of the old fault-line fields that had any wells to fall within the requirements for subsidy payments. The prices of crude oil remained constant in the district except for increases as a result of subsidy payments. Production and Probation Wartime demands called for increased allowables for many fields, consequently the condensate and oil production for 1944 increased to 190,016,180, which is up 6.9 per cent over 1943. The East Texas field, of course, remained the principal producer of the district, accounting for 134,768'499 bbl. during the year, or 71 per cent of the district total production of condensate and oil. The field topped its own 1943 production by 4.8 per cent and became the first field in the world to produce 2 billion barrels of oil. The Hawkins field remained the second largest oil producer in the district, with 13,317,088 bbl. for the year, a drop of 6.8 per cent from 1943, while Van field was third with 11,635,708 bbl. The

Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

"A new kind of cast & wrought (C&W) Ni-Co base superalloys named as ""TMW alloys"" are developed recently for compressor or turbine disks of gas turbine engines in High Temperature Materials 21 Project at National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan. These Ni-Co base superalloys combine the characters of two kinds of y- y' two-phase alloys (Ni-base and Co-18at%Ti alloys) and have higher tensile strength and creep resistance than C&W UNDIMET 720Li superalloy."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report summarizes a field demonstration of pneumatic backfilling technologies conducted at the abandoned Hillside Coal and Iron Slope in Vandling, P A. Researchers demonstrated two pneumatic backfilling technologies recently developed under the USBM's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Research Program, the Pneumatic Pipefeeder and the High-Efficiency Ejector. Both systems had previously been evaluated at the USBM's subsidence abatement investigation laboratory near Fairchance, P A. The objective of the demonstration was to fill 100% of the abandoned tunnel with backfill stone to prevent further subsidence. The Pneumatic Pipefeeder was used for 21 days, at a rate of 63 to 124 t/ d (69 to 136 st/d), to fill 88% of the tunnel. The High-Efficiency Ejector was used for 2 days, at a rate of 125 to 132 t/d (138 to 146 st/d) to fill the remaining 12% of the tunnel. The backfill placed by both systems was tightly compacted. The major problem encountered was wear on the polyethylene pipeline from the abrasion of the high-velocity backfill. The use of heavier steel pipe minimized the problem. A cost analysis for the entire project is given.

Some interesting and, to American eyes, rather unusual processes for refining impure aluminum derived from scraps were found by American and British investigators who went into Germany in 1945 for the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What was found was recorded in a series of reports (see page ), many of which have been released for general reading. This paper gathers under one title and summarizes the German work in refining light metal scrap. Reference must be made to the original reports for greater detail. Basically, the occasion and stimulus for the German developments in treating light metal scrap were hard necessity. Germany needed the metal for a rapacious war industry. Adequate supplies of new aluminum from reduction works were not assured. Great quantities of airplane and other light metal war scraps were forecast. It was evident that the scrap metal would have to be reabsorbed by the producing industry and would have to be kept of good quality. The normal current production of manufacturing scrap was being and could be consumed as generated. It offered no technical problem. The mixed scraps, especially those arising from crashed and decommissioned airplanes, however, presented problems of another kind. Airplane Scrap The recovery of usable aluminum alloy from the mixed assemblies that made up the piles of airplane scrap was attacked in different ways by different groups and with differing degrees of success. Three procedures actually were used on a commercial scale, one was in pilot-plant stage and another had come to a halt in the laboratory a year before Germany collapsed. Four of these five processes actually involved "refining"; that is, some measure of purification of the metal after melting. Sorting and Separation on a Sloping Hearth The simplest procedure for utilizing airplane scrap involved no refining in the strict sense of the word. This was the practice adopted by two representative plants visited by the author, the Leipziger Leichtmetalle Werke, Rackwitz, Saxony, and the Vereinigte Leichtmetalle Werke, Hanover. These firms did essentially the same thing that was done in England but not with equal success, to judge by their shorter experience, the smaller tonnage handled and by the number and quality of alloys produced. The two German firms named rough-sorted scraps by their easily recognizable alloys, essentially by part and shape. They used hand labor to chop and hack and tear apart. The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. Table 1 on the following page shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year which the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the United States, and. 87 to 89 percent of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 U. S. new mine production was down to 22 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of U. S. new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89 to 91 percent. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. U. S. porphyry copper production represented about 65 percent of U. S. refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75 percent in 1976, and dropped back to 61 percent in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the United States began to swell.

Beneficiation of coal is a water intensive process, and the water is recovered in downstream operations in the high rate thickener (HRT) and vacuum belt filtration (VBF). Clean coal particles entering the HRT have an inherent tendency to enter the overflow because they are extremely fine and hydrophobic. Hence, flocculants (polymers) are used to floc the ultrafine particles so that they settle and enter the underflow. Ultrafine coal particles (−37 μ), which are highly hydrophobic, if present in the stream, will not be efficiently captured by using flocculants alone. This is observed in the normal plant operation at one of the beneficiation plants in the Jharia region, Jharkhand, India. Approximately 6–7% of the feed to the HRT enters the over flow (supernatant water). Hence, this amount of clean coal particles is not recovered and account for production losses. A comprehensive settling and dewatering test work was conducted with clean coal slurry using several commercially available reagents. Studies were also done on different combinations of reagents, including coagulants and surfactants along with flocculants, to improve the settling behavior of the coal particles. The reagents were assessed based on their performance with respect to settling rates, overflow water clarity, and compaction of the underflow solids. Emphasis was given to the ability of the reagents in compacting thickener underflow to higher densities so that maximum water could be recovered from the thickener. Pretreatment of highly hydrophobic coal slurry with a combination of coagulant and surfactant followed by flocculation showed very good settling characteristics with clear overflow.

IT has long been accepted that blast-furnace practice varies to some degree with the coke used. While the qualities desirable in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blast-furnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: I. Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the production of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. Limitations of the use of screen tests as an objective measure of coke quality. 8. Importance of uniformity in coke. The Birmingham district first produced steel from Alabama hematite ores in 1899. Since then, the district generally produced more than 6.0 million gross tons of ore a year to the late 1950's. Production has declined since then to an annual rate of about 1.5 million gross tons. Reserves calculated for the district are sufficient to last many years. Mining in the district is now confined to Woodward Iron Company's Vance and Pyne mines. The rocks exposed consist of about 15,000 feet of consolidated Paleozoic sediments with a thin veneer of unconsolidated Cretaceous sediments in the Vance area. The district is characterized by a distinctively parallel and subparallel, slightly arcuate series of faults and joint systems. In view of available information, it seems reasonable to conclude that the Birmingham red ores are of sedimentary origin, modified to a small extent by diagenetic replacement after original deposition.

Continuous casting of slabs is conducted with two successive steel flows: first from ladle to tundish, then from tundish to mold. There are certain process abnormalities related to ladle, tundish and mold. For example, change of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) is the one encountered during steel flow from tundish to mold. Tundish exchange is the abnormality taking place due to replacement of processed tundish with the new one at rest. Another example is the flow of steel from ladle to tundish without a ladle shroud. In this study, a statistical analysis was conducted related to the process abnormalities in slab casters of a steel plant. Slab surface defects observed in slab yard was incorporated in this analysis.

Up to the present time few attempts have been made to produce hard nonmagnetic materials by heat treatment of austenitic steels. The usual result has been to cause them to pass into the martensitic stage, thus destroying to a great extent the typical austenitic properties, since this involves a transition of a portion of the iron from a face-centered to a body-centered type of atomic arrangement. High-strength nonmagnetic materials such as might be provided by properly hardening austenite are required in the electrical industry for different machine parts. In Europe nonmagnetic retainer rings for restraining the end-turns of the rotor windings in turbo-alternators have been developed as a special application of high-strength austenite. In testing1 a 28,000-kva. three-phase Siemens turbo generator running at 3000 r.p.m. at full load current, the losses in the short-circuit test were 450 kw. for the magnetic ring and 286 kw. for the nonmagnetic, and the difference should be attributable to the magnetic ring. The differences in temperatures during the same test are given in Table 1 and these show the advantage of a nonmagnetic over a magnetic retainer ring.

Datun Concentrator currently processes complex sulfide ores in Gejiu Municipality, Yunnan Province, China. The ore contains much higher arsenic than other ores. The run of mine ore is fed to the concentrator to recover copper and tin by bulk flotation and gravity concentration, and then the other sulphides, such as pyrite, arsenopyrite, etc. didn?t get utilized and are discarded as tailings due to the high arsenic content. In order to utilize the pyrites in the tailings, a series of tests have been conducted for finding the solution of arsenic removal from high arsenic-bearing pyrite concentrates through simple flotation process. By means of orthogonal experimental design, the optimized levels and main factors have been found out for the roughing stage. Through selection of the effective in-organic depressants for the arsenic-bearing minerals, the arsenic in the pyrite concentrate can be removed to meet the requirement of sulfuric acid plant (As%=0.5%) by the open flotation process, i.e., one-time roughing and two-time cleaning.

The year 1939 witnessed the rapid development of several of the more important Rocky Mountain oil and gas areas and the discovery of new oil and gas fields. As a further result of an active year, many oil fields had their productive limits greatly extended or responded to deeper drilling with oil production in lower horizons. In Colorado there was a substantial increase in refinery capacity, with three new units constructed. Its contribution to the crude-oil supply was an important extension of the producing area of a Western Slope field and a deeper oil-producing horizon in an old field east of the Front Range. Occurrences of gas were reported in two wells in northwestern Colorado, but severe winter weather prevented tests and the value of these discoveries cannot be determined at this time. Montana's northern fields were extended and a number of record wells were completed. The North Cut Bank area gives promise of wide expansion in 1940. The gas-producing area of Wyoming's Elk Basin field was extended into Montana on the north plunge of the anticline. The most important developments in Wyoming oil fields in 1939 were extensions to the producing area of Lance Creek and the discovery of a deeper pay in the Tensleep formation at Wertz dome. A new gas field at Horn Valley in the south central part of the state was the only new field discovered, but wildcatting was at low ebb in Wyoming in 1939. Colorado In Colorado, the year 1939 saw the completion of several interesting tests, but largely with negative results. Oil was discovered, however, in a deeper sand in the old Fort Collins field and the productive area of the Wilson Creek field was extended. Gas had been noted in two Western Slope wells, at Yellowjacket-Buford and at Trull, but their volumes had not been determined at the end of the year. Of principal interest, however, were the failures, descriptions of which will be given presently. One of these established a new depth record for Colorado.

The paper describing the raining operations at the Mt. Hope mine, Mt. Lope, N. J., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs of various mining operations in the United States. Mt. Hope mine produces magnetite ore. It is situated in the general northern part of the State of New Jersey. The towns of Rockaway, Wharton, and Dover lie within a radius of 4 miles from the mine. Dover is 40 miles from New York City.

The drilling of constantly deeper oil wells has made it imperative that the manufacturer of casing be ever searching for new methods and new materials to meet the increased demands. One phase of this search constitutes the subject matter of the present paper. Starting from the original Drake well in 1859, the depth of wells has advanced by leaps and bounds, until today depths of 6000 to 8000 ft. are common. Conditions point to the necessity for drilling to greater depths, and it is not at all improbable that much of the future oil produc- tion will be from wells around 10,000 ft. deep. The trend to deeper wells is nicely illustrated by the curve in Fig. 1.l The points plotted are the maximum depths attained in the various pools which were at their peak for the years given. It may be of some interest to observe the change that has taken place in the tensile and collapsing stresses over the last 25 years. The pressure at the bottom of a 900-ft. hole, equivalent to the pressure caused by an equal column of water, is only 450 1b. per sq. in. The equivalent water pressure corresponding to the depth of the deepest hole today would be 4762 1b. per sq, inch.

The dynamics of explosive detonations are understood; however recreating a real-world, to-scale scenario is costly. The use of a shock-tunnel allows testing to be done on a smaller scale, with the simulated effect of a large explosion. Analyzing explosive waveforms using this method can greatly reduce cost in testing blast-resistant products, such as anti-terrorism devices, mine safety products, and military equipment. The purpose of this project is to better the understanding of how the waveform dynamics of an explosive detonated within a shock-tunnel differ from those in an open-air arena test.

A summary of geochemical dispersion processes is presented. Secondary and tertiary dispersion of uranium was examined at several uranium prospects in British Columbia. The vertical migration of uranium from bedrock (primary dispersion) through overburden into the various soil horizons, and into snow and plants, was studied, and relationships were sought to explain the dispersion patterns in the secondary and tertiary environments. Soil developments were examined to obtain information on factors affecting the dispersion of uranium in soil profiles and tertiary substances; samples were analyzed for a number of elements. Biogeochemical data indicate that plant geochemistry is a possible exploration aid in areas of heavy overburden owing to the high selectivity of certain plants for specific elements. Some new data on the geochemistry of snow are discussed as a matter of research interest in the tertiary dispersion of uranium. Analytical techniques and problems are discussed, particularly extraction techniques, which must be carefully chosen to give reliable information on uranium dispersion.
