MANY improvements have been made in recent years in the milling of industrial minerals and it is the purpose of this paper to review some of the more important innovations that are now being used in the preparation of these products. Some of the observations which will be made have been prompted by what was seen on a recent trip to industrial mineral milling plants in the north and central sections of the eastern United States. The flotation plants visited were those of the Valley Forge Cement Company at West Conshohocken, Pa., the International Agricultural Corporation at Mount Pleasant, Tenn., and the Aluminum Ore Company at Rosiclare, Ill. Besides these, sand plants in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, coal-cleaning plants in Pennsylvania, pyrophyllite, mica, feldspar, clay, and kyanite plants in North Carolina, and a zinc mill and the Tennessee Valley Authority ceramic laboratory in Tennessee were visited. The milling of industrial minerals can be considered under three broad headings, namely, crushing, grinding, and purification. Usually there is both a separation and grinding problem in treating an industrial mineral, but the problems are distinct, although sometimes a separation is made while grinding, as in the case of a Raymond throw-out mill, which grinds and at the same time throws out most of any hard material present in its feed.

"An underground reservoir was to be constructed at Doha in Qatar. Simsima lime stone is present at the bottom. When the reservoir is empty, there will be uplift at the bottom but this will change to downward load when it is full. The rock at the bottom had high bearing capacity to resist downward load. But uplift had to be resisted by piles or anchors. The reservoir has a size of 120mx80m. Shrinkage and creep of concrete coupled with thermal contraction imposed a horizontal movement of 26mm on the extreme piles. So, piles have to accommodate this as well. This unique situation needed a unique solution. The solution was to provide piles with flexible high tensile strands to take tension. An annular space near the head of the pile would facilitate horizontal movement as well. Compression load was directly passed on to the raft bearing on rock.INTRODUCTIONAn underground reservoir for storage of drinking water was to be constructed at Doha, Qatar. The reservoir was proposed to have a plan size of 120m x 80m. Clear height inside the reservoir was proposed as 17.2m, from the bottom of roof to the top of bottom raft. Overall height of the reservoir at the outlet from the top of the roof to the bottom of raft was to be 21.2m. For the sake of inspection and in order to prevent pollution from the surroundings a gallery was planned around the reservoir. This could accommodate pipelines as well. This gallery was 3.0m wide on three sides and 8.4m wide on the outlet side.The gallery had removable gratings as cover in order to facilitate maintenance. Capacity of the reservoirwas proposed to be 40million gallons. The reservoir is divided into four compartments with baffle walls in each one for water circulation. Roof of the reservoir is kept at 300mm above ground level. There are two levels of car park on top of the reservoir. Top of the reservoir roof is at +14.35. Bottom varies from - 6.68 to -7.08. Lowest water table is at +6.00. Concrete structure of the reservoir was designed by a local consultant. The Navayuga Engineering Company was entrusted with the construction. Economic and at the same time environmentally acceptable mining of small vertical ore bodies and veins to great depths has always been a challenge for miners. The Bauer cutter system, widely used in civil engineering, has been further developed for applications in exploration and mining, to a sustainable system for selective mining with a focus on small vertical ore bodies and veins, as well as residual ore in open pit operations. Current situation of conventional mining of small ore bodies and vertical veins Small ore bodies and vertical or near-vertical ore veins often pose a challenge to the mining industry. The relatively small size of the ore deposit over great depths or lengths, with only limited exposure to the surface makes economical mining difficult. Open pit mining of such ore bodies must either be terminated early because of the high stripping ratio and the enormous environmental impact or is unprofitable from the very beginning. The required massive stripping of waste rock leads to high material hauling times and costs, intensive roadway and bench construction and maintenance, possible safety hazards due to heavy vehicle movement, pit wall stability risks, intensive surface water management and massive waste dump requirements. In addition, it can be assumed that increasingly extensive rehabilitation measures will be required in the future after mine closure. Particularly in vertically oriented magmatic and hydrothermal deposits the technical, economic and environmental limits for further pushbacks, to extend the open pit depth, can lead to an early end of mine life even if a significant quantity of residual ore is left behind. Going underground is only a viable option in a limited number of mines with very high ore values and volumes. The high development cost of an underground mine, as well as the higher underground mining costs, often prevent further mining to greater depths.

The Industrial Minerals Milling Section of the Mineral Processing Division has been engaged for the past three years in a study of the separation of minerals, by means of electronic sorting equipment, on the basis of their colour. Considerable knowledge of the subject has been built up. Because the object of this study is application as a means of beneficiation, a number of examples of the separations achieved are presented. Introduction T 0 the mineral collector, the colour of a mineral may be pleasing, even fascinating; to the mineralogist, student or professional, it may also be practical. It serves, to some extent, as a distinguishing feature in many minerals, and helps to fix with reasonable accuracy the identity of a few. It may now become a useful tool of the mineral dresser. The idea of using a difference in colour as a means of separation of one mineral from another is not new. Hand sorting dates back to ancient time. However, the means by which this can be done mechanically was developed only during the past decade. As of June 30, 1970, Federal regulations required the operator of each underground coal mine to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust below legislative standards. As of March 1, 1971, over 152,000 respirable dust samples have been processed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 75 percent of underground working sections are being sampled in accordance with Federal regulations. Results indicate that 72 percent of the sections which have completed at least one basic sampling cycle are below 3.0 mg/m3, the standard in effect under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (P.L. 91-173). Notices of Violation were issued on 1,670 underground mines for failure to begin a sampling program; Withdrawal Orders were issued in 64 of these instances. Notices of Violation were issued on 1,121 sections where applicable dust levels were exceeded; Withdrawal Orders were issued in seven of these instances. The results of two separate but related studies are given. In the first study, four equations were tested; the object was to determine which would produce a curve that would best fit data points that represent a trend of declining oil production in 90 California fields. Two conventional equations (the Arps and semilog) and two novel equations (extreme-c and double semilog) were tested. The curves were first fitted to the initial 9 years of the 15-year production data and then extrapolated for 6 years to determine how well the extrapolated curve would fit the data points. The generated curves were also extrapolated beyond the last data point to predict rates of future production. The results of the first study showed that no equation was clearly superior to the others in all respects. The semilog equation resulted in the best fit to production data for the first 9 years, but the Arps and extreme-c equations produced a better fit for the extrapolated data for the period of 9 to 15 years. The Arps and extreme-c also gave more realistic production rates when extended to the point where cumulative production equaled reserves. A second study was made to determine if the least-squares technique applied to the Arps equation would result in more accurate extrapolations. The merits of the logarithmic and the nonlogarithmic forms of the Arps hyperbolic equation were also tested. For the logarithmic expression, it was found that one of the constants of the Arps equation reached a value so small or so large that the equation was not applicable to the data of 40 of the 90 California fields. The nonlogarithmic form of the Arps equation was applicable to neither the same 40 fields nor to a few additional ones. When the data and the Arps equation were compatible, the use of the least-squares technique as compared with other methods improved the extrapolation accuracy somewhat.

By means of a technique developed in cooperation with the Eagle-Picher Mining & Smelting Co. and outlined in the first report of this series (R. I. 4333 ), it was possible to take many thermocouple readings with base-metal couples at temperatures over 2300° F with unsupported protection tubes for over half the lengths of the Henryetta retorts. -This technique made it possible to avoid the use of the usual optical pyrometer, which gives temperatures dependent upon the luminosity of the flames, and which is not conveniently usable to read temperatures for the lengths of the retorts from the front of the furnace. The temperatures of the retorts themselves were necessary in order to set upper limits for safe operation; the lower limits of operating temperatures are set by the zinc content of the retort residues. The zinc content left in the retort residues for various sections of length also varies with retort temperatures rather than with flame temperatures. The variations in temperature along the retort can then be used as guides to distill more zinc from the residues, to avoid fluctuations in the rates ,of flow of zinc vapor into the condenser and to employ lower temperatures if such rates become high enough to cause losses of uncondensed zinc.

Atualmente os maus hábitos alimentares, combinados ao sedentarismo, podem levar a ocorrência de elevados níveis de colesterol na corrente sanguínea. Este fato aumenta o risco de obstrução dos vasos sanguíneos, limitando o fluxo do sangue para o coração. Desta maneira, para desobstruir o vaso sanguíneo e manter o lúmen arterial aberto é colocado um stent. Os stents são redes, normalmente de ligas metálicas, que servem para desobstruir os vasos sanguíneos. O tratamento de doenças das artérias coronárias e periféricas usando stents metálicos tem sido adotado nas intervenções médicas nos dias de hoje. No entanto, surgiram argumentos que indicavam os benefícios de remover o stent após este ter feito a desobstrução, originando desenvolvimento de stents biodegradáveis. Estes exigem propriedades mecânicas adequadas, biocompatibilidade adequada, garantindo uma baixa toxicidade dos produtos de degradação. Com isso, o objetivo deste trabalho é o estudo preliminar sobre stents metálicos biodegradáveis, como ferro puro, magnésio. Além disso, avaliar se os mesmos são adequados para aplicação à stents biodegradáveis, avaliando as propriedades mecânicas dos metais, biocompatibilidade e toxicidade dos compostos degradados ao longo do tempo de implantação.

Rib brows present a significant safety hazard in underground coal mines in the United States. To address this issue, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) are developing a practical tool to assess both the potential of rib brow formation and the stability of any formed brows. As part of this effort, a monitoring study was conducted to assess the potential for rib brow formation in coal pillar ribs. This study was conducted in a room-and-pillar coal mine where coal pillar ribs are prone to developing rib brows. Although no rib brows formed in the instrumented pillar, data from monitoring and visual observations provided valuable insights into the loading mechanisms impacting the instrumented pillar. These findings helped identify factors that may reduce rib brow formation, including the cavability of the roof in mined areas, the applied rib support, the strength of rock partings, and the overall integrity of the coal seam. The scientific findings published in the case study aid in assessing the potential of brow formation, offering additional evidence for the need to improve rib control methods in underground coal mines.

The expansion of surface mining has led to the development of very large off-highway trucks currently capable of hauling payloads in excess of 290t. Mine haul roads have historically been designed empirically, relying heavily on local experience; the trend in increasing truck size will thus render the current pavement systems inadequate. Since truck haulage costs can account for 10%-50% of the total costs incurred by a surface mine, not only would the maintenance costs of existing roads of inadequate design increase, vehicle operating and maintenance costs would also increase prohibitively. There is thus a need for improved design technologies encompassing the construction and management techniques of mine haul roads, appropriate for the wheel loads of vehicles now in use. The aim of the paper is to present the different components of a mine haul road design and management system and to demonstrate the value of its application through case studies. The system has been applied at several South-African surface mines and distinct benefits have been derived. The improved structural design of a new road resulted in a 29% saving in construction costs and also provided better service, whilst the optimal selection and management of wearing-course materials provided better functionality at lower total transportation operating costs.

Some time after my arrival in Rock Springs to fill a short engagement with The Union Pacific Coal Company, Mr. Dickinson informed me that he had placed me on the program for a paper entitled "Mechanical Loading in Indiana." Since development of mechanical loading operations on a genuine coal producing basis for that section began near Oakland City, Indiana, and rapidly spread over Southern Indiana, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois simultaneously, the results referred to are in many ways common to all three states. Prior to December, 1922, several attempts at mechanical loading had been registered, notably among which were installations of the Jeffry Entry Driver, and the Meyers-Whaley loader. The object of most of these earlier installations was quick development rather than lower production costs in face loading. In this measure it is claimed the machines were at least partially satisfactory. Three items which seemed to delay rapid progress in the adoption of either machine were, excessive first cost, height of coal seam necessary, and timidity of the operator relative to the labor situation which might develop. When the Joy machine was put on the market in the form of the 4-B.U., with a clearance overall which would perform in coal slightly under five feet in height, and at a cost price of less than one-half that of other machines being sold, many operators were at once ready to take a chance along with the manufacturer. This desire was accentuated by the difficulty to operate coal mines at all at prevailing production costs. This condition also made the coal miner more receptive to machinery which would give added employment to the field. At the convention held in Cincinnati during May, Mr. .Joy stated that about 200 of his machines were in operation at that time. Mr. Whaley said that about 40 of his were in use in coal mines. It is probable that of the above sum 75 machines were installed in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Since that time, possibly 50 more machines of later design have been added. Like many of our troubles, those which seemed most difficult to overcome, proved in the end to have been least of all, and in this case the sup¬posed resistance which labor would advance has been more or less imaginary. In Illinois and Indiana a scale of wages is being accepted which is consistent with average earnings of machine men. The fact that a large number of coal operators want and are buying more loading machines has encouraged mining machinery manufcturers on every hand to devote renewed vigor to the cause and it is generally understood that new types and models are being developed both in factories and mines with the coal industry eager always to see the latest development. I understand that at present the Goodman, the Jeffry, and the Sullivan machinery companies are each offering new designs to meet Indiana and Illinois requirements. It is not strange that with so many installations many were made as a result of an impulse to ride the band wagon without any serious attempt to study the results or draw any conclusions from the experiences of others with loading machinery.

In the current issue of Link-Belt News is this quotation: "Advancing waves of other people's progress sweep over the unchanging man and wash him out." As we look over the industrial world today we are struck by the many waves which are sweeping over backward industries. Mergers are being consummated in all lines of endeavor. General Motors are making radios and the Bendix Brake Company are making airplanes. Railroads which twenty years ago were called to account by the Federal Government for their efforts to form combinations are today being ordered to combine. But what is of immediate concern to the coal industry is the fact that there is now in existence or in project a total of 3,641 miles of pipe lines to carry natural gas to most of the country's industrial centers. This is the wave of progress which is sweeping toward you and me. If we are to grasp the significance of these many changes, we must widen our vision so that we may learn some- thing from 'the other fellow's experience. The first lesson is that cost of production alone is not a measure of profit. It is an interesting fact that the production of an article represents a definite loss until that article has been sold for a price in excess of its total cost, and the money is in the hands of the producer. If this is true, then the selling price is more important than the production cost.

We address the problem of rib spalling caused by mining-induced roof movement. This problem affects production and safety of the working face. We address this problem by using the 3DEC numerical software to simulate the distribution and evolution regularity of displacement, stress, and the extent of plastic zone in the overlying strata and coal face during the advancing excavation of the 10,905 working face of the mine. Results showed that the first weighting interval of the 10,905 working face is 50 m, and the periodic weighting interval is 20 m. The fractures of overlying strata develop during the first weighting; the vertical stress and vertical displacement of the main roof increase by 45% and 10%, respectively; the vertical stress of the coal face increases by 11%; and the plastic zone in front of the working face increases rapidly. The displacement and stress of the main roof and coal face change periodically during the period of periodic weighting. The variation range during the periodic weighting is less than 30%, but the overall degree is larger than that before the first weighting. Finally, the integrity and rationality of numerical simulation are supplemented and verified by similarity simulation. On this basis, the proposed roof and coal face stability control scheme reduces the maximum horizontal displacement of the coal face from 16 to 4 cm, that is, a decrease of 75%. This study provides theoretical guidance for roof support and coal face stability control of working faces under similar conditions.

Much research is aimed at providing a revolutionary advance in technology that has the potential to render current mining and beneficiation problems obsolete. Such revolutionary advancements have been significant but few in number. Recent history shows that most improvement has been derived from a series of incremental improvements to the many processes that make up mining and beneficiation systems. Management approaches are changing to encourage this 'continuous improvement' and to support its implementation through the formal management of quality. This paper reviews some of the industry's priority R&D project areas and demonstrates that very significant opportunities are available to broaden the focus for improvement from individual processes to include the interaction between mining and mineral beneficiation systems.

IN the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1-2 results in inadequate beneficiation. INVESTIGATION OF FLOTATION METHODS Flotation has been used in Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate.3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over-all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P205 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. Conversion of Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves requires a multidisciplinary approach and application of a number of Modifying Factors. The Modifying Factors for mining, particularly dilution and recovery in a caving mine are complex and can be difficult to determine. Cave flow modelling software is widely used for mine planning, scheduling and forecasting metal production. However, the conversion of Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves remains a difficult and subjective process and a consistent approach to convert Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves as part of the cave flow modelling process is not published in the literature. This is due to the difficulty in estimating the Ore Reserve that remains as cave stocks at a particular point in the mine schedule, the recovered tonnage and grade of the diluting material at various stages in the mine life, as well as the Mineral Resource classification of both the recovered and diluting material that forms the Ore Reserve. The key principle of this paper is the tracking of the Mineral Resource classification in the flow model used to estimate the Ore Reserves. This is critical to defining the Ore Reserve as Proved or Probable and enabling transparency in the reporting process. An approach for dealing with mineralised external dilution in the Ore Reserve estimation process is also provided.This paper outlines the approach to convert Mineral Resources into Ore Reserves developed at the Ernest Henry mine sublevel cave (EHM SLC). The same method could be used in any cave mine and applied at any stage of the mine life. The process replaces broad-brush assumptions for the mining Modifying Factors, such as dilution and recovery, as these are determined numerically as part of the model computation. This paper explains the Ore Reserve estimation method with a worked example to enable the reader to adopt the process at any caving mine. Mineral Resource classification within the block model is embedded in the cave flow model and the flow model results used to attribute tonnes, grade and the mixed proportions of the Mineral Resource classification for material extracted from each drawpoint. This information is then used to convert planned mine production into the appropriate Ore Reserve classification. Since the flow model simulation follows the mine schedule, it can be used to predict depletion and cave stocks at any stage of the mine life, and can calculate a residual block model at the end of the mine life. The accuracy of the flow model is checked by validating the forecast ore grade and metal tonne with reconciliation data from the concentrator which is also used to calibrate the flow model.CITATION:Campbell, A D, 2017. In the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1,2 results in inadequate beneficiation. Investigation of Flotation Methods Flotation has been used in 'Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate. 3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P2O5 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. An effective technique to minimize miners? respirable dust and diesel exposure on mobile mining equipment is to place mine operators in enclosed cabs with designed filtration and pressurization systems. Many factors affect the performance of these enclosed cab systems, and one of the most significant factors is the effectiveness of the filtration system. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type filters are typically used because they are highly efficient at capturing all types and sizes of particles, including those in the submicron range such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, in laboratory tests, minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 16 filters have proven to be highly efficient for capturing DPM and respirable dust. Also, MERV 16 filters can be less restrictive to cab airflow and less expensive than HEPA filters. To verify their effectiveness in the field, MERV 16 filters were used in the enclosed cab filtration system on a face drill and roof bolting mining machine and tested at an underground limestone mine. Test results showed that DPM and respirable dust concentrations were reduced by more than 90% when the cabs were properly sealed. However, when the cab door was opened periodically throughout the shift, the reduction efficiency of the MERV 16 filters was reduced to 80% on average.
