BGRIMM advanced advisable technical scheme with optimally parameter and route for the feature of dynamic in large scale flotation machine, and developed the KYF Large Scale Flotation Cells, which have used more than 400. The paper advanced the history, the design principle, the operating principle, the structure feature and the application of KYF flotation ma-chine.

WE were requested to make a digest of our original grinding report, Fine Grinding Investigations at Lake Shore Mines. This digest is much easier to read than the original report, but it lacks the experimental 'evidence' found in the first report which, in many cases, is much more interesting and educational than the conclusions derived from it. In the course of rewriting the paper, we noticed several new angles on the test data which had not occurred to us previously. From the data included in the report and other tests not published, calculations were made which indicated a line of new test work. These tests, among other things, more than suggest a technique for designing the length of mills, the position and number of classifiers, and the total loads a mill should carry.

Attachment of collectors containing thioamide groups to sulfide minerals is interpreted as interaction between NH-acids and sulfides acting as solid bases with the formation of a donor–acceptor reagent–mineral bond. As the acid function of the reagents increases, their sorption optimum is observed to shift to a less alkaline region. The developed concept has enabled us to propose a method for calculating optimal pH values for the sorption of reagents on mineral surfaces depending on the acidity of the reagents and the pH value of the medium. Our estimates correlate well with the experimental data. We studied the spectra of the reagents containing thioamide groups and the spectra of copper salts and their surface compounds on an oxidised copper film, chalcopyrite, and pyrite using the infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Some effective applications are described of reagents containing thioamide groups in the flotation of copper, copper-molybdenum, and gold ores, both separately and in combination with other collectors. It is shown that the flotation performance is maximised by adding two- and three-component collector combinations, including collectors containing thioamide groups. In this case, the increase in the recovery of copper, molybdenum, and gold is up to 2-5% compared to conventional process conditions. A new, high-performing reagent containing a thioamide group is proposed. A commercial pilot batch of the reagent was produced and sent for flotation tests in gold ore applications. Pyrite depression in the flotation of copper ores is difficult due to the activation of Cu2+ ions on pyrite surface. In this study, the radical chain reaction involving the redox cycling of Cu(I/II) induced by sodium metabisulphite (MBS) was exploited to selectively depress the flotation of copper-activated pyrite at pH 8.0. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the presence of Cu2+ and O2 was essential to the formation of SO•− 5 through sulphite oxidation, the main entity to convert the activating species Cu(I)S on pyrite to Cu(II)-hydroxide/sulphate, causing deactivation of pyrite. The depression role ofMBS on pyrite flotation was closely associated with the type of grinding media which affected the electrochemical conditions of flotation. When forged steel was used as the grinding media, a high dosage of MBS was required to depress pyrite, but a low dosage of MBS could almost completely depressed pyrite when high chrome steel grinding media was used. This is because high chrome steel produced a stronger oxidation condition with a higher amount of Cu2+ and O2 which promoted the formation of SO•− 5

Radioisotope X -ray techniques of analysis for nickel have been tested in laboratory and plant trials. In the laboratory tests. a comparison was made of radioisotope and conventional analyses for nickel in solid s samples taken from streams of a nickel concentrator. Coefficients of variation of 1.7% for feed and concentrate samples , and equal to 10% for final tailing samples, were obtained. Continuous determination of nickel in final tailing slurries was demonstrated in a trial lasting 20 days at a nickel concentrator (Western Mining Corporation), nickel being determined with a standard error of 0.036% Ni in the slurry solids within the range of 0.24 to 0.68% Ni. This error, obtained by comparison of on-stream probe analyses with assays of samples taken from the stream, includes errors in sampling and assay by conventional techniques.

"IntroductionDURING the past two decades an enormous amount of empirical data has been accumulating on grinding. These data have been obtained by mill operators on grinding ores with a diversity of characteristics, and generally they have been published. However, whenever an operator, who has started milling on a new ore, has tried to find a case in literature which would exactly fit his particular grinding problem, he has failed. Evidently, something fundamental has been lacking in all these empirical data, and, as a consequence, each new operator has had to undertake his own experimenting, get the best results he can, maybe publish these results, and let it go at that. This, in the writer's opinion, has been• due to the fact that even the ablest and most inquisitive millman has been forced to look on grinding as an art, and so, except very rarely, has not been able to find the time to stop and think; if he did so, it was rather in a philosophic way, that grinding is a fundamental process, a process that takes place in river beds, on the sea shore, etc.Nevertheless, when all the data so far published are correlated and examined as a whole, one is struck with the advances that have been made in grinding. The writer (7) had made such a study in 1949, and, when the correlation was completed, it showed that there was nothing heterogeneous about the accumulated data and that when brought together they were in harmony with each other. The writer's conclusion was that, if grinding criteria were defined and were expressed in such a way as to make integration of any data into basic formulae possible, grinding would be established as a mathematically exact science, and grinding worries of the harassed mill operator would be at an end!The first attempts to rationalize comminution were made by Rittinger and Kick. However, their theories led to endless disputes which did not accomplish much, except possibly clearing the path for subsequent investigators."

Utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines after concentration not only helps in conservation of the mineral wealth, but also substantialsly improves the economics of iron ore mining. There has been need to develop suitable beneficiation process for upgradation of low-grade iron ores towards their rational utilisation. Presently the circuit adopted for processing iron ores has limitations in reduction of alumina. The depletion of high-grade reserves, utilisation of low-grade reserves coupled with in-creasing market pressure for improved product quality necessitates re-examination of the process flow sheets and evaluate alternative or supplemental processing routes. The main objective of the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) is to get Pellet grade concentrate with +65% Fe (min), SiO2 1.8% (max), Al2O3 1.8% (max) and other proportionate constituents by adopting suitable beneficiation techniques and to collect the relevant data (Quality and Quantity of the Products) for the process development. In an effort to formulate a conceptual process flow sheet, the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm), which is lying at a mine site in India, samples were collected and taken up for the study. The efforts of R & D of NMDC are discussed in this paper. Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) sample assayed 60.10% Fe with 3.48% SiO2 Aland 4.48% 2O3from 40 microns to 300 microns. The sample consists of hematite as the chief ore mineral followed by minor amounts of maghemite. The gangue minerals include quartz and ferruginous clay in which quartz occurs as medium grained where as ferruginous clay occurs as fine to sub microscopic size mineral. The economical processing route evolved out of the studies finally could yield a final concentrate constituting 58.63% by weight along with Iron unit?s recovery of 63.51% assaying 65.10% Fe with 1.48% SiO2 and 1.85% Al2O3route that adopted comprises the following operations. Making slurry in a sump pump followed by grinding in close circuit with 48mesh size Screen. The -48 mesh size product was subjected o the Cycloning to remove slimes. The Cyclone Underflow product was subjected to Floatex Density Separation (FDS) to separate fine heavy minerals from the gangue minerals. The FDS Underflow was collected as concentrate. The FDS Overflow product was further subjected with Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) to recover more Iron units as magnetics. A conceptual process flow sheet was evolved, which may become the prelude to the subsequent finalisation of the process flow sheet for commercialisation.

The investigation shows that there are 2 coal beds of major importance in Letcher County from the standpoint of present production - Upper Elkhorn No, 3 and Fire Clay - and 5 beds of minor importance - Whitesburg, Flag, Haddix, Elkhorn Leader, and Amburgy, The Upper Elkhorn No. 3 and Fire Clay beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,600 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 1,353 million short tons as of January 1, 1952. Of this total, 1,056 million short tons ere in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bad characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Este artigo apresenta o SALF, um software nacional desenvolvido para simular o processo de laminação a frio de chapas através do método dos elementos finitos. O programa utiliza a formulação implícita/rígido-plástica em suas análises. Simulações retiradas da literatura foram realizadas com o software, sendo os materiais simulados alumínio e aço, com espessuras de 3,0 mm e 1,0 mm, reduções de 5% e 30% e atrito de 0,06 a 0,15. Os resultados do SALF ficaram bem próximos dos resultados descritos na literatura. Desta forma, a partir de agora, as siderúrgicas nacionais têm uma ferramenta nacional para simular o processo de laminação a frio, a qual pode auxiliar na melhoria de seus processos e produtos.

In September 1985, the Chairman of the Transportation, Aviation and Materials Subcommittee of the House of Representatives requested that the Director of the Bureau of Mines address the issue of South Africa and critical materials dependency in testimony before the Subcommittee. Subsequent to the testimony, the Bureau has prepared a technical report focusing on the importance of South Africa and, in some cases, its neighboring countries as suppliers of six key materials. The report includes a qualitative analysis which examines the supply shortfall resulting from a potential disruption, options that are available for mitigating the impact, and their likely effectiveness, and quantitative analyses which estimate the economic impacts in the chromium and manganese markets resulting from peacetime disruption scenarios specified by the Subcommittee Chairman. The concluding section treats the role and capabilities of the Bureau of Mines in dealing with mineral supply disruptions.

The thermodynamics of cyclone smelting of sulphidic copper ores is described using as example the production of copper matte with 75 wt % Cu. Equilibrium calcualtions and material and energy balances show that an increase in process temperature from 1600 K to 1900 K results in the extensive transfer of minor elements such as As, Sb, Bi, Pb, Zn,.... to the gas phase. A pilot plant for carrying out the cyclone smelting process is described. Calculations of material and heat transfer for the reaction of ZnS show that the smelting reactions of sulphides in the cyclone take place very rapidly at high temperatures. The dissociation of the sulphides with subsequent oxidation reactions in the gas phase plays an important part in. the process and is mainly controlled by heat transfer.

Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the basis factors, as they become available through future experimentation and analysis.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing cloy reining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These Toners are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production casts. Although the publication of total production cants might not be advisable in sore instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion end study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically coiled to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Clay City Fire Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

The Waihi Gold Mine is situated in a high rainfall area (annual average of over 2 m) on the North Island of New Zealand. Water treatment and discharge at the mine has been ongoing for the last 25 years. The first water treatment plant consisted of a æstandardÆ water treatment facility (ferric chloride precipitation) and cyanide detoxification. With time the project has expanded and the volumes of water increased requiring additional treatment methods (reverse osmosis) to meet the water quality for discharge. Some examples of the results of research projects, conducted in the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology are presented. Special attention is paid to mining machines and equipment, and improving work safety and comfort of miners in underground workings. From numerous scientific and technical achievements of the KOMAG Institute within the last 2 years, a few design solutions have been selected for a presentation. Some results of European projects on innovative solutions are described as well, highlighting KOMAG?s role in the national and international research area.

The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. I The plant units now employed for control and absorption of S02 gas constitute the main advance made in process, and these, with other details, are fully explained in this paper.APPLICATION AT BROKEN HILL NORTHThe existing North Broken Hill Limited gravity mill commenced operations on 9th September, 1909.

Goethite is an important naturally occurring sorbent for divalent heavy metals and has often been used as a model compound in studies of adsorption on oxide mineral surfaces. Surface complexation modeling, surface spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques have all been applied to goethite adsorption. Modeling studies have shown that usually several different sets of fitted parameters are equally successful in representing surface charging and adsorption data. Surface spectroscopic data are proving valuable in determining the nature of the surface sites, and refined models now incorporate structural information on interatomic distances and coordination numbers. Multisite surface complexation models can give very good fits to surface charging and adsorption data, but further improvements are needed to better represent surface reactions involving exchange of protons and divalent cations. Recent experimental and modeling studies on adsorption of divalent transition metals on goethite are described and the present status of the field is assessed.

The Bureau of Mines t.ced its investigations into sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to define the scaling law for safe separation from detonating AN-FO. Both missile- and non-missile-producing AN-FO donors, weighing up to 5,400 pounds, were employed with acceptors of the same size. The usual cube-root scaling law was not confirmed; exponents for the relationship S = f(Wx) for AN were 0.51 with non¬missile-producing donors and 0.61 for missile-producing donors. For AN-FO an exponent of 0.80 was indicated in the missile-producing case. AN-F0 in polyethylene bags appeared somewhat more easily initiated than bulk AN-FO. The efficacy of barricades in protecting AN charges was investigated. detonation distances were reduced from one-third to one-seventh when filled barricades were employed. The investigation was extended to dynamite with both types of donors. With 1,600-pound missile-producing donors and an equivalent weight of dynamite, initiation would be expected in 50 percent of the trials at 167 feet. The corresponding value in the non-missile case was 67 feet. The data developed in this program of sympathetic detonation will allow the development of a rational set of safe separation distances for AN, AN-FO, and explosives.

Estes vidros planos com eficiência energética são produtos constituídos por uma lâmina de vidro tipo Soda-Cálcio revestida por filmes finos em escala nanométrica. Tais filmes finos são em sua maioria constituídos de ligas metálicas, metais puros e materiais cerâmicos, como óxidos e nitretos. As propriedades físicas e químicas de cada camada afetam diretamente as propriedades ópticas e a performance do produto. Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo das propriedades ópticas de filmes finos de Nitreto de Silício, depositados por Magnetron Sputtering Reativo sobre substrato de vidro Soda-Cálcio.
