Phosphate fines (size ≤ 45 μm), from the Red Sea Region, Egypt, were subjected to beneficiation process to recover the phosphorite grains from such fines. The sample is characterized by low P2O5 content (18.78%) associated with gangue minerals such as silica (22.77% SiO2) and carbonate (2.01% MgO) indicating its low grade. Phosphate pre-concentrate was prepared by gravity separation, using Falcon, where 63.37% of the phosphate, with 24.94% P2O5, 1.46% MgO, and 10.54% SiO2, was firstly recovered reducing the mass flow to the subsequent beneficiation process. However, the gravity tailing was the feed for the reverse phosphate flotation using bench scale column flotation where oleic acid was used as a carbonate gangue collector and amylase enzyme as a phosphate depressant. Under the appropriate flotation conditions (0.1% amylase, 5·10−4 mol/dm3 oleic acid, and temp. 30 °C), phospho-concentrate assaying 0.61% MgO, 13.14% SiO2, and 27.85% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of 55.45%, was finally obtained without the use of expensive depressants, e.g., phosphoric acid or sodium silicate. A tentative flow sheet for the whole process was postulated.

Achieving relinquishment of mining sites is becoming increasingly difficult, with a study by Byrne (2013) estimating that out of a set of 73 mining and metals sites around the world, less than ten per cent had achieved relinquishment over the last 50 years. The median forecast duration of time allocated for water management in the closure plans studied was approximately ten years, while the reality at the actual sites was a median duration of 22 years to date and growing.One of many challenges in mine closure planning is managing geomorphic stability of stream diversions. The challenge is to be able to demonstrate to regulators and the community that a proposed rehabilitation solution will be stable over the long term.During the mining operations, local watercourses and surface drainage can be diverted and managed using engineered channels and drainage structures. However, during the post-operations stage, the engineered channel and drainage may require modification to a more natural condition that will facilitate long-term environmental sustainability. Achieving geomorphic stability of a diverted watercourse is difficult, with the majority of stream diversions in Australia failing to meet expected design performance (White et al, 2013). Geomorphic stability is a complex process that is controlled by a combination of factors, including hydraulic flow conditions, geotechnical conditions and vegetation.This paper proposes that a fully dynamic and deterministic geomorphological model can be used to supplement the traditional empirical approaches to assess long-term geomorphic stability. The paper provides an overview of the geomorphological models and how they have been applied in engineering studies for forecasting future evolution of stream systems. Abstract -Nodules of carbonaceous matter have been observed in several Archaean peraluminous granites adjoining the gold- and uranium-bearing Witwatersrand Basin. These nodules, which resemble solid bitumen, usually replace uraninite or uranothorite and are paragenetically late. They show many similarities to kerogen seams and nodules associated with the conglomerate horizons in the Witwatersrand Basin, including composition, maturation, intimate association with uraninite, and a late paragenesis. U-Pb isotope ratios for granite-hosted and Witwatersrand kerogens define a single, albeit somewhat diffuse, Pb-loss discordia suggesting an upper intercept age of circa 2300 Ma. Carbon isotope analysis indicates lighter ?13C values for the granite-hosted nodules than for the sediment-hosted kerogen seams. Raman spectroscopy indicates that granite-hosted kerogen is more highly ordered than Witwatersrand seam kerogen. A model is presented which links the granitoid­ and sediment-hosted organic matter to an event of oil generation in the Witwatersrand Basin circa 2300 Ma ago. Light hydrocarbons migrated through the sediments and into underlying/adjacent granitic rocks, undergoing polymerization and accumulation in response to radiation accompanying the presence of high-uranium phases.

This paper is the first part of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,5 and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey.7 A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "competitive-price gasolines" and 105 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Miner at Bartlesville, Okla.

Hydrometallurgical equipment used to extract and refine copper and other metals is exposed to extremely corrosive chemical environments. These systems must be fabricated from materials that are durable against corrosion, meet exacting mechanical requirements, and perform economically over the life of the mineral processing plant. In several recent large hydromet projects, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) has been shown to provide equal if not superior durability relative to alternative materials of construction. This paper will compare corrosion performance and cost of plant equipment fabricated with corrosion resistant alloys, rubber lined steel, and FRP made with Epoxy Vinyl Ester thermoset resins. Case histories for FRP piping, storage tanks, extraction vessels, and electrowinning cells combined with laboratory-based corrosion studies will be reviewed to demonstrate how FRP materials are selected for hydrometallurgical equipment. Specific examples from projects such as El Boleo, Long Harbour and others will be used to demonstrate how the versatility of FRP allows for remote fabrication of durable corrosion-resistant large-scale equipment for hydrometallurgical refinement of copper and other metals. INTRODUCTION Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) began to emerge as a material of construction for corrosion service in many industrial processes in the late 1950s because of its ease of use and overall performance. Corrosion resistant (CR) FRP, as an alternative construction material to alloys, rubber and tile linings, grew steadily in following decades. The aggressive operating conditions associated with hydrometallurgical processes typically require materials of construction that can withstand acids and acid chlorides at temperatures up to 90°C, sometimes higher. Common metallic materials of construction, such as carbon steel, are not compatible with these conditions. High nickel alloys are capable of meeting performance requirements, but often at a high cost. In many cases FRP mining equipment based on epoxy vinyl ester resin (EVER) offers durability, long service life and lower maintenance costs. Through demonstrated performance and decades of case histories, more and more design engineers are confidently specifying FRP as the material of construction for new mineral processing equipment.

Barite, or barytes as it is sometimes called, belongs to one of the lesser groups of nonmetallic minerals, of which 15 to 20 varieties are mined in California in amounts varying in value from a few hundred to almost half a million dollars annually. Commercial production of barite in California, according to the records of the State Mining Bureau (now Division of Mines), began in the year 1910 with shipments totaling 860 tons, valued at $5640 f.0.b. rail shipping point. With the exception of the years 1924 and 1925, when no shipments were made, the output has varied, reaching a maximum of 17,993 tons, worth $90,617, in 1927. The 1928 output was 13,406 tons, worth $55,888 f.0.b. rail shipping point, bringing the state total to the end of 1928 to 59,972 tons, valued at $313,930. Consumption of BaRitE in United States Crude barite sold or used by producers in the United States for the year 1927 amounted to 248,219 tons, valued at $1,594,423, according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines.l In addition, there was imported, principally from Germany, a total of 70,274 tons, valued at $253,284. Manufactured products from these tonnages combined were distributed in 1927 (the latest year for which figures are at present available) as follows: ground barite, 57,658 tons; lithopone, 174,083 tons; barium chemicals (including carbonate, 4,960 tons; chloride, 3,541 tons; binoxide and sulfate or blanc Jixe combined, 13,354 tons). Missouri accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domestic crude barite, followed by Georgia and Tennessee, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Nevada, South Carolina, and Virginia. Pipelines for transporting crude oil and refined products in the United States totaled 189,982 miles on January 1, 1959. This mileage was less than a 1-percent increase from the 1956 total of 188,540 miles. During the three-year period (January 1956 - January 199), 14,886 miles of new pipe and 10,649 miles of secondhand pipe was laid. Pipe taken up in the same period was 24,093 miles. The facts regarding pipeline mileage were obtained by the Bureau of Mines from pipeline companies and information provided by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Crude-oil gathering lines, as of January 1959, were 40 percent of the United States pipeline mileage and totaled 75,182 miles, an increase of 1,656 miles during the three-year period. Crude-oil trunklines totaled 70,317 miles or 37 percent of the United States pipeline mileage, a decline of 8,277 miles from the 1956 total. Some of this loss is attributed to the converting of crude lines to refined products. Refined product lines in January 1959, totaled 44,483 or 23 percent of the United States mileage, an increase of 8,063 miles during the three-year period.

CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.

The coal seam in the southern coal field of the Ordos Basin serves as the main aquifer, while the region is known for its high-intensity coal mining activities. The coupling effect of mine water and the strong disturbance caused by high-intensity mining have brought serious challenges to the stability of coal pillars. To address this, a formula for determining the reasonable width of coal pillars under the aforementioned coupling effect and establish a criterion for coal pillar instability in this paper. A case study was on the 11,215 working face at the Xiaojihan coal mine in the area to investigate coal pillar stability. Results indicate that the strength and stability of the coal pillar are affected by the water content, with a small water content increasing its strength and large water content weakening it. In high-intensity exploration of watery coal seams, the best stability of the coal pillar is achieved at optimal water content and mining rates. For the Xiaojihan coal mine, the optimum water content and mining rate are 3.31% and 20 m/d, respectively, ensuring the efficient mining of watery coal seams. Furthermore, this study's findings can provide valuable references for the mining design of coal mines with similar geological conditions in the region.

"The strategy of fibrous dust sampling is discussed, various sampiing methods are critically reviewed .and their application to coal dust is demonstrated. Fibre counting is described in detail. An attempt is made to explain the basis of determining the threshold limit value of asbestos and other dusts. The paper also discusses such dust control methods as enclosure of the process, effective local exhaust ventilation, segregation, substitution, wet processing and continuous monitoring of the return air for recirculation."

This report presents the results of a benefit/cost analysis of the Bureau of Mines' Coal Extraction RCD Program for the period FY 1977 through FY 1982. The analysis is an update of the analysis performed on the Coal Extraction R&D Program for EY 1975 - FY 1980 and presented in a MITRE report, MTR-7225, published in May 1975. Major changes included: new production scenarios and an update of R&D cost estimates.
