During the process of pillar extraction at the Welgedacht Colliery, an unexpected pillar collapse resulted in the entrapment of equipment. The area was visited soon after the event to evaluate the stability of the area for the purposes of extracting the equipment. It was found that the area had stabilised sufficiently to allow work without undue risk to the safety of workers. The equipment was reclaimed successfully. A subsequent investigation into the reasons for the collapse was conducted. It entailed detailed underground and surface subsidence observations and numerical modeling. It was found that none of the perceived negative factors that were present at the time could result in pillar loads that were sufficient to cause the collapse. It was concluded that the local pillar strengths were less than the nationally used value and that they were possibly further reduced by aging.

"Carbides and nitrides of iron are being considered as magnetic materials for high-density recording due to their chemical stability and high-saturation magnetization values (> 100 emu/g). Iron carbides and iron nitrides with magnetic properties suitable for magnetic media were synthesized by employing a novel synthesis procedure based on fluidization of powders in reactive atmospheres. Fluidized-bed reactors of laboratory, bench, and pilot scale were employed for the synthesis of iron carbide, FeSC2, by reducing and carburizing U-Fe203 in the temperature range of 300 to 550 ºC. A temperature of 400· ºC and a reaction time of 2 to 3 h are found to be optimal for the synthesis of iron carbide. When the carburization was carried out in a reducing and carburizing atmosphere such as carbon monoxide, nucleation and growth of FeSC2 occurred directly from Fe304 with no intermediate phases such as FeO or Fe. Longer carburization times resulted in the deposition of carbon on the surfaces of FeSC2 particles due to Boudouard reaction, and higher temperatures favored the formation of a mixture of carbides such as FesC2 and Fe3C. Iron nitrides were synthesized by reducing u-Fe203 in the temperature range of 350 to 550 ºC, followed by nitriding in the temperature range of 350 to 550·ºC. The powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, and a vibrating sample magnetometer.IntroductionRecent demand for high-quality recording of optical, electrical, and audio signals generated interest in magnetic tapes with high-recording densities as compared to the conventional magnetic tapes based on U-Fe203. At present, commercially available magnetic tapes contain maghematite, U-Fe203, as a magnetic material with a saturation magnetization of90 emu/g and a coercive force of 400 Oe. Recording of signals at a higher density per unit volume of magnetic material demands magnetic materials with high-saturation magnetization and a reasonable coercive force. Although metallic iron particles possess a saturation magnetization of 130 to 150 emu/g and a high coercive force of 1000 Oe, the gradual oxidation of iron-to-iron oxides (of lower saturation magnetization) prevents the use of iron particles for high-density recording. In contrast, iron carbides such as FesC2, Fe7C3 and iron nitrides such as Fe4N and Fe3N possess excellent magnetic properties coupled with good electrical conductivities and high hardness. The carbides and nitrides of iron have generated significant interest as magnetic materials for the next generation of magnetic tapes due to their unique magnetic properties and relatively greater oxidation resistance as compared to metallic iron particles [1-4]."

"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Owing to the need for additional sources of supply of both zinc and lead following World War II, the Bureau of Mines investigated many abandoned lead-zinc mines in the eastern United States. A series of shallow veins in south-western St. Lawrence County has long been a subject of speculation. These veins, which average about 4 feet in width and cut across the bedding of the country rock at right angles, are filled with calcite-carrying galena and sphalerite. The deposits have been worked sporadically during the last 115 years. From 1837 to 1852 the Coal Hill, the North, and the Victoria mines near the village of Rossie were at their peak of activity. Other calcite veins were prospected and a small production was realized. The Bureau of Mines began diamond drilling May 1, 1950, under the general supervision of McHenry Mosier, chief, Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines, Region VIII, and under the immediate supervision of the author) who was project engineer, following the preliminary examination by Robert S. Sanford. A total of 3,870.2 feet was drilled in 18 holes on four of the numerous deposits scattered over Macomb and Rossie townships. Drilling was completed September 21, 1950.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is a compilation of fundamental cyanide chemistry data obtained through review of the scientific literature. It includes information on thermodynamics and chemical equilibria, ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectra, and the chemistry and photochemistry of cyanide, chemical species derived from cyanide, and metal cyanide species. It also includes guidance on the use of the data for solving practical problems in precious metals applications. This publication is intended mainly for use as a reference by personnel in the precious metals industry and regulatory agencies, and other cyanide users, to provide comprehensive information on cyanide chemistry. The document should assist in the formulation of effective policies for cyanide control in the construction, operation, and closure phases of precious metals mining and metallurgical operations. In addition, the data in this publication will be useful in other contexts, such as dealing with industrial cyanide usage, cyanide-containing wastes and associated environmental problems.

HermesTM metal magnetic liner (MML) has been invented and manufactured by China Metallurgy and Mining General Co. (CMMC). This paper describes its mechanism, structure, magnetic field distribution, application, economic benefit and safety performance. The 10 years? service life in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Mine, along with 6 years? technological analysis on its application in 5500mm×8800mm (diameter × length) ball mill in Anshan Steel?s Diaojuntai mineral processing plant, has proved its advantages such as super reliability, long service life, light weight, thin thickness, low noise and short payback period. It has also demonstrated its positive effects on the grinding process such as high productivity, energy-effective performance and low consumption of grinding media. So far, more than 400 sets of MML have been applied in ball mills with diameter rang-ing from 1500mm to 5500mm. It has become highly popular in American market recently due to its safe and effective performance.

Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. The desulfurization process by powder injection and blowing in the RH refining of molten steel and its mechanism have been considered and analyzed. Based on the two-resistance mass transfer theory and the mass balance of sulfur in the system, a kinetic model for the process has been developed. The related parameters of the model, including the mass transfer coefficients and the effective amount of powder in the molten steel being treated for desulfurization, have been more reasonably determined. Modeling and predictions of the process of injecting and blowing the lime-based powder flux under assumed operating modes with the different initial contents of sulfur and amounts of powder injected and blown in a RH degasser of 300 t capacity have been carried out using the model. The relevant circulation rate of the liquid steel and the powder injection and blowing rate were taken to be 100 t/min and 150 kg/min, respectively. The initial contents of sulfur in the liquid steel to be treated and the amounts of powder injection and blowing were respectively assumed to be 0.007, 0.006, 0.005, 0.004, 0.003, 0.002 mass-% and 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3 kg/t-steel. The total treatment time for desulfurization under each mode was set up at 24 min, equivalent to eight circulation cycles of the liquid steel to be treated. The results indicated that the predictions made with this model are in good agreement with some data of the industrial experiments and practice. Injecting and blowing the lime-based powder flux with the composition of 85 mass-% lime (CaO) + 15 mass-% fluorspar (CaF2) of 3-5 kg/t-steel, it is possible to decrease the sulfur content in the molten steel to ultralow level below (5-10)x10·4 mass-% from (60-80)x 10·4 mass-%. The total treatment time needed will appropriately be 12-20 min. Intensifying the powder injection and blowing operation and increasing the circulation rate of the liquid steel may effectively' raise the rate of the process in RH refining. The model may be expected to offer some useful information and a reliable basis for determining the reasonable process parameters and help in optimizing the technology of desulfurization by powder injection and blowing in the RH refining of molten steel.

The Archaean Yilgam craton has been a major gold province since 1888 with production and reserves of about 4700 tonnes. Production in 1994 was about 135 tonnes. The largest deposit, the famous Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, contains about 2000 tonnes of gold. About 40 deposits containing more than 35 tonnes (1Moz) of gold has been discovered so far in the Yilgarn. Most of the craton has deep weathering profiles inherited from previous tropical climatic conditions, modified by subsequent arid conditions. A mantle of transported material covers much of the variably stripped weathering profiles. Resolving the geology of the volcanic-sedimentary units (greenstones) and the structures that host the gold mineralization relies heavily on aeromagnetics and shallow drilling.

A indústria de cerâmica vermelha brasileira consome 10,3 bilhões de toneladas de argila ao mês para produção de telhas e blocos. Uma alternativa para tornar o setor mais sustentável ambientalmente é a incorporação de resíduos na massa argilosa. Na própria olaria são gerados resíduos, tal como, o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua originado na etapa de conformação das peças. Este trabalho visa caracterizar o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua para incorporação na massa argilosa usada em cerâmica vermelha. O resíduo de massa cerâmica crua foi caracterizado através de ensaios de FRX, DRX, calorimetria exploratória diferencial e termogravimetria, limites de Atterberg e distribuição de tamanho de partículas. Corpos de prova foram conformados, secos à 110ºC e queimados à 900ºC em forno industrial e foram submetidos a ensaios de absorção de água, porosidade aparente, massa específica aparente e resistência à flexão. Os resultados evidenciam que as propriedades cerâmicas avaliadas nos corpos de prova atendem aos valores das argilas-padrão brasileiras para uso em cerâmica vermelha.

This paper presents a case study of how an asset strategy and zero based budget was developed for an existing crushing plant that had been purchased from the contract service provider by an Australian Iron Ore miner. The goal was to directly align the strategies and budget to the business goals. This however was not a simple task due to poor historical records and a general lack of information. These challenges were overcome and the benefits of a documented maintenance strategy, a justifiable zero based budget and employee engagement were realized.

Reduce well construction and operation costs associated with in situ leach mining while increasing mineral recovery. Approach To accommodate the size of centrifugal pumps presently in use, in situ leaching production wells are typically drilled to 6 inches in diameter, while monitor wells are drilled to measure 4 inches in diameter. However, in order to reduce the cost of drilling these larger diameter wells and to increase recovery, the Bureau has developed jet pumps which have smaller diameters than centrifugal pumps of the same capacity. This allows both production and monitor wells to be drilled smaller. Bureau estimates indicate that the cost of drilling a 3-inch-diameter production well at in situ leaching operations would be about 35 percent less than the cost of a 6-inch well. Similarly, the cost of drilling a 2-inch-diameter monitor well would be about 26 percent less than the cost of a 4-inch well. Such significant savings in the cost of drilling these wells would effect a substantial reduction in total capital cost. Use of the new jet pumps can also increase the percentage of recovery because less costly wells allow closer well spacings, improving the distribution of the leach solution. How the System Works After the borehole is cased, the new small-diameter jet pump, along with piping and accessories, is installed and connected to a centrifugal pumping unit on the surface. High-pressure water from the surface pump is forced through a nozzle into the venturi of the jet type pump injector. This jet action lifts the leach and mineral-bearing solution to the surface.

During several years of operation in Europe, South Africa and other countries, the Tri-Flo has demonstrated to represent a substantial improvement of the dense medium dynamic separation systems. The reasons are: (1) high sharpness separation due to the multistage system and the application of new concepts in designing the regeneration circuit and controlling the medium rheology; (2) the possibility of performing two cuts at different densities using a since separation device and a single regeneration circuit. The paper discusses in detail the above mentioned points, with particular reference to the multistage technology, based on the circuit analysis theory, and to the control of the medium rheology based on recent work in the modelling, and simulation of the rheological behavior of dense suspensions.

The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

Australian continental crust has accreted and consolidated by thirds: 1/3 during Archean time, 1/3 during Early to mid- Proterozoic time, and 1/3 during latest Precambrian to mostly Paleozoic time. The progression of orogenic systems and the crustal consolidations they represent seem not fundamentally different in basic orogenic processes from better known Mesozoic-Cenozoic examples in that accretionary, continental margin, collisional, and intraplate intracratonic inverted and/or reactivated systems are all recognizable in the tectonic evolution of Australia.

Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.

BRIDGMAN.-Owing to a misunderstanding, I did not see Dr. McAdam's and Dr. MacGregor's remarks on my paper on Flow and Fracture (Metals Technology, December 1944, Pp. 32-38), until after their publication. Both Dr. McAdam and Dr. MacGregor speak of my analysis for the stress distribution at the neck of a tension specimen as containing several assumptions; in particular, that the strain is uniform across the section of the neck, that there is no hoop tension at the periphery, and that the plasticity conditions of von Mises hold. As far as the mathematics goes, the situation is no different in this problem of plastic flow than in a conventional problem of elasticity. That solution is unique which satisfies the boundary conditions on the stresses, the stress equations of equilibrium, and in addition the constitutive equations connecting stress and strain in the elastic case, or a corresponding set of equations, of which the von Mises relations are a special form, in the plastic case. In the particular case of the necked tension specimen I have found that there is a solution satisfying the boundary conditions, the stress equations of equilibrium, and the von Mises plasticity conditions in which the strain is uniform across the section, and there is no hoop tension at the periphery. This is therefore the solution, and the uniformity of strain and vanishing of hoop tension at the periphery are to be described as discoveries, over which the operator has no control, rather than as assumptions. The only part of the solution that can properly be described as an assumption is the von Mises plasticity condition. With regard to this it is to be noted that the condition is needed only in a much weakened form, for the analysis uses the condition only at the neck, where the strain is approximately constant. Thus, in the extreme case referred to in a footnote of my paper (p. 37, Met. Tech. Dec. 1944) the actually measured strain across the section varies from 2.4 to 2.6. Obviously it is a much weaker assumption to postulate that the von Mises condition holds in the strain range 2.4 to 2.6 than to assume it to hold for the entire range of strain from o up to 2.6, which would be necessary if the solution applied to the entire tension specimen rather than to the immediate region of the neck only. Furthermore, it is to be commented that under the special conditions of this problem the von Mises condition becomes identical with the maximum shearing-stress criterion of plastic flow; this amounts also to a weakening of the restrictions imposed by the von Mises condition. Dr. MacGregor refers to actual experiments of his own in which the strain was found not to be uniform across the neck. It is to be emphasized, however, that these were experiments on bars of rectangular section, and that the nonuniformity established was a nonuniformity around the perimeter, not a nonuniformity from the surface toward the axis. My method of solution applies only to a circular cross section. It can be said that the solution that satisfies the boundary conditions, etc., would definitely not be expected to demand a uniform strain for noncircular sections. "7.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter addresses the joint venture and examines a number of general concepts of the joint venture relationship. Chapter 8 looks at some specific concepts related to the provisions of a joint venture agreement, which are equally applicable to a shareholders’ agreement or other contractual relationship. The term “joint venture” is used because the author is a common law solicitor (a matter of convenience for which apologies are offered to civil law readers), but it should be noted that, in many aspects, the legal structure of an entity is irrelevant. It is the relationship of the parties, be they venturers or shareholders, that is important, and the areas of concern are surprisingly similar (except for terminology).The details of the joint venture relationship and agreement could fill several books. Accordingly, this chapter and the next focus on selected topics that appear to have caused problems or confusion or to be the basis for disputes. And remember that, although the following discussion is in the context of a joint venture, many of the comments apply, either directly or indirectly, to virtually any common undertaking and the agreement defining it.For interest’s sake, this chapter starts with a summary of some of the earlier types of agreements and arrangements that have evolved into the joint venture agreement of today in Canada, the philosophy of their format, and the reasons for their demise.7.2. EVOLUTION OF THE CANADIAN JOINT VENTUREThe Early DaysMuch of the opening up of Canada’s north is due to exploration for and development of mines. The early discoverers were relatively free to roam and explore at will and, if they were fortunate enough to find something, they dealt with the appropriate government to acquire exploitation rights. The early interests lay in gold or silver. Workings were small, usually worked by the owner alone or with only a couple of helpers to extract the native gold or silver. If the owner wanted to move on, he could sell his property outright and use his stake to look elsewhere.As logging and mining camps were opened, the development of better roads and railways made access easier. Entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to make money by assembling large parcels of land and working them as a single operation.
