This report describes work performed and results obtained for the technical and economic feasibility study of oil production by mining methods. The characteristics of oil fields which would make them amenable to mining techniques were identified. An inventory of known U.S. oil fields that offer this potential was collated. This was further divided into fields having potential for underground and surface mining systems development. Several candidate fields that fit particular underground and surface mining system types were then selected. Conceptual mining systems were designed for the selected fields. Five underground and four surface methods were chosen. Costs of oil production were estimated for these selections. The impact of oil mining an the environment was also considered.

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSIn initial attempts to mine taconite by conventional open-pit methods, the material tended to break into tabular blocks that were too large to be handled by conventional shovel dippers and were unsatisfactory in an ordinary crusher feed. A great amount of secondary blasting was necessary, which added considerably to the cost of mining.The Bureau of Mines and others are engaged in studies designed to contribute to the solution of taconite-mining problems. These studies concern problems related to drilling techniques and patterns, types and methods of use of explosives, and other factors relative to effecting maximum fragmentation at minimum cost.This report is concerned with study of the application of shaped charges in drill holes, the effectiveness of shaped charges as compared to capped charges in secondary blasting, and the merits of different drilling patterns and methods of detonation of conventional-explosive charges.Fragmentation of taconite at or near the surface is controlled or strongly influenced by joint and bedding planes. Since all tests in this study were made in a jointed and bedded area, a definite conclusion as to the relative effect of a shaped charge in a drill hole, as compared to a conventional charge at greater depths and tighter ground, is precluded. However, application of shaped charges in primary blasting of taconite appears to be of no advantage.In secondary blasting of taconite, conventional, capped charges produced better breakage than shaped charges of the designs tested.Based on the results of conventional blasting practice in horizontal-, inclined-, and vertical-hole tests, no better fragmentation is obtained from blasting either horizontal or inclined holes, compared to vertical holes.Holes drilled in staggered parallel rows that intersect both series of joint planes at the greatest possible angle, give maximum breakage compared to rows parallel to one of the series of joint planes.Methods of detonation made little difference in breakage; but the millidelay caps produced the best conditions for moving the broken rocks."

IT has been demonstrated in the laboratory by A. J. Phillips1 that a transformation or conversion from beta directly to alpha may take place in a brass of 61 to 62.5 per cent copper content. The completion of the transformation is dependent on a rapid rate of cooling from the all-beta field through the alpha + beta range to the alpha field. Phillips states that in a slowly cooled alloy containing 62 per cent copper and 38 per cent zinc the copper content of the beta is progressively decreased from 62 to 56 per cent by precipitation of alpha. Rapid cooling tends to prevent the separation of alpha with a copper content of more than 62 per cent by reducing to a minimum the time required for passing through the alpha + beta range. Upon crossing beyond the (alpha + beta.)/(alpha) boundary to the all-alpha region below, the material is transformed from beta to alpha. It is essential that there be no change in composition. Phillips obtained his results by quenching a 62:38 copper-zinc alloy from 850° C. in iced brine at -8° C. No reference to the occurrence of this transformation in a manufacturing process has been found in the literature. An investigation of the microstructures of a number of hot forgings made from leaded brass rods yielded one forging in which this striking conversion from beta to alpha had occurred. The purpose of this paper is to describe the transformation and certain conditions under which it may occur during the hot pressing of brass. The conversion was noted in a shape forged from a leaded brass rod, the composition of which was: Cu, 60.26 per cent; Zn, 37.86; Pb, 1.88. In this study the lead content was disregarded and the alloy was considered to be equivalent to an alloy of 61.40 per cent copper and 38.60 per cent zinc (98.12 parts = 100 parts). The possibility that the lead might obstruct or accelerate the precipitation of alpha was not studied. The lead appears as black globules in the photomicrographs and has a negligible solubility in the alloy.

"In an earlier paper(1) the visits to several European mines using the bucket-wheel excavator (BWE) technology were described. It was during this trip that information was gathered on some interesting developments related to this type of mining, taking place elsewhere. It was learned that an across-the-pit system (XPS) comprised of a BWE and stacker has been operating successfully in a Hungarian mine for some time. Also the use of stackers with 225 m long booms and draglines with 125 m booms and 125m3 buckets in Soviet mines was indicated. Such equipment could be of great value to some Canadian strip mines, in particular the equipment proven useful in severe climatic conditions of U.S.S.R., similar to those of the Canadian prairies.To follow up on this information a field trip to Hungary and the U.S.S.R. was organized by the Department of Mineral Engineering, University of Alberta, to study the applications and performance of the systems in question. Visited were the Thorez mine near Visonta, Hungary, U.S.S.R. Ministry of Coal Mining and Skotchinski Institute in Moscow, Karagandashakhstoi Institute (designers of Ekibastuz mines in the Kazakh Republic) and Kostenko mine in Karaganda, Vostsibgiproshakht Institute (designers of Irsha Borodinski, Kharanovski, Moguntski and Tugnuski mines in Siberia) and the eastern Siberian Unit of the U.S.S.R. Coal Mining Ministry in Irkutsk as well as Azeiski mine located some 250 km northwest of Irkutsk. The findings of this field trip are presented."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on underground stope leaching of metalliferous ores to minimize the environmental impact of ore processing on the surface and to maximize minable reserves. An aspect of this research is to minimize pregnant solution losses and/or groundwater contamination by leach solutions. Bulkhead design and construction are important issues for solution control and stope leaching economics. A reinforced concrete bulkhead was designed, constructed, and tested for solution control in an underground mine near Idaho Springs, CO. This paper presents the bulkhead design methodology and construction procedure.

A numerical method is presented to calculate the isopressure (isobar) lines and streamlines for an oilfield from the pressure distribution. A knowledge of these lines is useful in the study of the flow of fluids in underground reservoirs, especially for those containing gaseous and/or liquid hydrocarbons. This work was done primarily to enable determination of the shape factors needed in the calculation of petroleum reservoir performance. However, it has application for the flow of water in aquifers, or electricity or heat in odd-shaped geometry. Techniques previously developed were used to calculate the pressure distribution. From this pressure distribution, the isopressure lines were calculated accurately by the method presented in this paper. Then by successively projecting orthogonal lines from one isopressure line to another, the streamlines are determined. From the coordinates of the isopressures and the streamlines, the shape factors can then be determined by a published method. Computer methods are presented to calculate the streamlines and isopressures for any well-spacing pattern existing within a field with multiple wells. The method reproduces the flow net for several well configurations having extensive geometrical variations. Such information provides the petroleum engineer with data from which he can compute oil recoveries for different patterns and thereby maximize the recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir.

The scope of this paper is such that it was deemed advisable to group the contents into several main sections. They are: Section 1. Geography and Geology. Section II. Historical Review. (a) Mining and Smelting in Alabama. (b) Milling. (c) Summary of Milling Research. These two sections are primarily a bibliography and summary of the research on the Birmingham Red Mountain ores up to the middle 1040's. Section III. Status of the Birmingham Iron Industry. This sect ion points out the extent to which the findings of the iron-ore research have been applied on a commercial scale. Also, a very brief description of the dependent and allied industries is included. The value of the Birmingham iron ore is greatly enhanced by the proximity of coal and dolomite. Thus the coal and coke industry and the dolomite industry are closely allied with and to a large extent dependent upon the possibilities of economic utilization of the Red Mountain iron ores. Section IV. Beneficiation Investigations of the Red Mountain Iron Ores. This is a record of the most recent, hitherto unpublished work of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the chemical and physical composition not only of the Big seam but of most of the iron-bearing rock strata of Red Mountain.

A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. This bulletin deals with a topic that is exceedingly wide, and will doubtl~ be under consideration and discussion so long as there are enough known deposits of oil and gas remaining in the earth to make their revelopment profitable. The Bureau of Mines has repeatedly called attention to the importance of protecting oil or gas sands from the encroachment of water, and the purpose of this paper is to summarize existing knowledge of methods and devices. Water may gain access to an oil-bearing formation from several sources-from water sands above or below those. containing the oil, or by encroaching through the oil sands as the oil is withdrawn. In short, it may enter a well from the "top, bottom, or side." Such ingress of water is a most serious detriment to the recovery of oil from the ground. As the art of drilling and developing oil properties has progressed, increasing thought, labor, and money have been expended on various methods, devices, and equipment for arresting the migration of water from its normal subsurface position into the porous strata containing valuable oil or gas accumulations. At an early stage in the oil-field development of California, it became evident that considerable modification of accepted drilling practices was necessary in order to meet the conditions imposed by the poorly consolidated shale, clay, sand, and bowlder beds penetrated, as well as the hard layers of sandstone and calcareous shale, which vary greatly in thickness, hardness, and frequency. These hard streaks are commonly called " shell," and are so reported in the well logs. As deeper and deeper territory was prospected, drillers from the older fields of the Ea,st, as well as from Texas and Louisiana fields, took part in the operations. Xhe practice evolved was thus based on the wide experience of a most cosmopolitan group of men who, considered as a group, were not hampered by being limited to the knowledge of the practice at any one locality.

The installation in 1948 of a Hum-phrey~ spiral concentrator section at the Hill-Trumbull plant of The Cleve-land-Cliffs Iron Co. is the latest commercial method on the Mesabi Range being used for the recovery of fine iron ore. In two stages of concentration 84 spirals treat approximately 120 long tons per hour of minus ? in. ore. These spirals augment the production of the heavy-density plant which recovers the plus 36 in. iron from the plant crude ore. Structure of the ore is such that, when crushed, about 50 pct of the plant crude is minus ? in. size. After de-sliming in a 66 in. Akins classifier, grinding the classifier product in a ball mill and again desliming in a 78 in. Akins classifier about 15 pct of the crude ore remains to be treated in the spiral plant. Overall recovery of the ball mill feed in the Hill-Trumbull spiral plant during the 1948 season was about 53 pct of the weight and 66 pct of the total iron content. Of the actual feed delivered to the spirals from the 78 in. classifier 64.9 pct of the weight was recovered containing 73.7 pct of the total iron. The average analysis of the spiral concentrate is 55.05 pct Fe and 14.83 pct SiO2. An average of mill assays during the 1948 season is given in Table 1. The Hill-Trumbull plants treat both wash ore and jig-type ore. During the 1948 season spirals were used only on the fine sizes of jig-type ore. At times the deslimed minus ? in. size is of sufficient grade to warrant bypassing the spirals but in the main the fine size is delivered to the 48 first stage spirals and thence to the 36 cleaner or second stage spirals. In the past several years numerous Mesabi Range ores in the fine size cate- gory have been tested by a wide variety of beneficiating equipment. The prodigious amount of research devoted to the recovery of values in the fine ore reflects the dire need of the iron industry to squeeze the last possible unit of iron from the mined ore and to develop suitable equipment and processes to satisfactorily concentrate the leaner horizons as they are encountered in the process of mining. Large governmental and private appropriations have been allotted, new laboratories built, research and technical staffs increased, and operator-manufacturer cooperative agreements applied to hasten the solution of the problem. The University of Minnesota, at its Eighth Annual Mining Symposium in January 1947, dedicated as its objective the bringing to light of technological developments in iron ore beneficiation. Papers were given at that time relating to processes being developed. Specifically, these papers reviewed flotation, Baum jig, selective media concentrator, Hardinge concentrator, Dorrco sizer, heavy media concentration, Hydrotator, and the Humphreys spiral. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., after encouraging results from tests in a small pilot plant using one full size spiral, made the first commercial installation of Humphreys spirals on the Mesabi Range at their Hill-Trumbull mine, Taconite, Minn. In recent years, west-central Arizona and adjacent California have become the focus of geologic and exploration attention because of its excellent exposure of detachment-fault terrane. Detachment faults, normal faults with nearly horizontal fault planes, are the result of regional extension. Rocks on the lower plate consist of mylonitized intrusive, metasedimentary and crystalline rocks highly altered to chlorite; upper plate rocks comprise sedimentary, volcanic, metasedimentary, and metavolcanic rocks. The movement of the detachment fault causes the rocks on the upper plate to be severely fractured and brecciated thus making them Ideal conduits for mineralizing fluids. Mineralization favored the more reactive sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the upper plate. Three gold deposits, located in upper plate rocks, are currently being mined along the Colorado River corridor: the Picacho Mine near Yuma, Arizona, 70 mi south of the study area; the American Girl Mine In southeastern California, 60 mi southwest; and the Copperstone Mine near the southern end of this study area. Samples from the above three mines were used to create a geochemical model of detachment-related gold deposits. Antimony, arsenic, barium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and zinc all occur In the mine samples in concentrations at least three times greater than found elsewhere in similar rock types. Samples taken by the Bureau from the wilderness study areas contain similar anomalous concentrations of the same elements as well as elevated concentrations of several other elements Including: lead, fluorine, cerium, uranium, and samarium.

During the past 6 years the Mining Division of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared many information circulars containing valuable technical data covering the operating details of mining and ore-dressing plants throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. These papers, written for the most part by operating officials in the field, have been designed to comprise a reference library for the operating engineer. In order to make the information contained in these publications more readily available to the busy engineer the enclosed series of reference tables has been compiled. The tabular arrangement is by subject rather than alphabetical order, thus avoiding the bulk of an alphabetical index.

The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. Transmission line foundation designers must rely on limited subsurface information, from easily accessible locations, resulting in subsurface uncertainty, increased design risk and increased construction costs. This paper presents a different approach for foundation analysis conducted in mountainous and alluvial floodplains located northwest of Phoenix, AZ. The region is dominated by fault-bounded, northeast dipping mountain ranges, where rock types and drillability can vary from granite to intact basalt. The valleys between are comprised of “basin-fill” deposits ranging from conglomerates and cemented soils to lose alluvium. Recently deposited alluvial fills can vary in depth significantly from location to location due to erosion and deposition from active and historic hydraulic features. To limit the subsurface uncertainty for foundation design, a phased approach using geophysical surveys along with detailed geologic reconnaissance was employed. Both compression wave and shear wave velocities were measured in order to identify the depth and properties of loose erodible materials from more scourresistant cemented, conglomerate, and rock deposits. These analyses were used in combination with limited subsurface drilling and sampling to evaluate direct embedment steel pole foundations for over fifty structures. Post analysis results from limited construction drilling reports were used to assess this approach.

Indian limestone mines which are highly mechanized in operation and supply limestone to the cement plants have been quite successful in devising ways and means to optimize blasting parameters, so as to have best fragmentation, powder factor, and cost of excavation. In primary blasting mechanized or manually mixed ammonium nitrate Fuel Oil is quite popular in dry holes, and in case of watery holes conventional packaged slurry/emulsions are being used. In order to avail the low density characteristics of the ANFO, some limestone mines have also used Saw Dust and Rice Husk along with ANFO. A number of field trials have been undertaken to explore the suitability of mixing rice-husk and saw dust with ANFO. Presently, about 10% of rice husk/saw dust is being used only to expand the explosive column. The main technical consideration for the use of saw dust/rice husk, has been to reduce the final density and increase the occupancy of explosive in the blast-hole. This not only lowers the detonation pressure in the blast holes, but also reduces cost of explosive without compromising on the fragmentation quality. Besides, with sleeping of the charge there is no substantial fall in the blast quality.

This study was performed by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the potential supply of primary copper from domestic resources. A tonnage-price relationship was developed indicating the quantity of copper that could be produced economically from known deposits at various copper prices and at various rates of return on the required capital investment. Costs of production are based on estimated capital and operating costs for mining, concentrating, smelting, and refining the copper. Total known recoverable copper resources are 189 million short tons of which 83 million tons could be economically recovered assuming a price of $0.50 per pound of copper, credit for the recovery of byproducts, and a 12-percent rate of return on capital investment. The quantities of recoverable byproducts associated with the 83 million tons of recoverable copper are molybdenum, 1.8 million tons, gold, 43 million troy ounces, and silver, 740 million troy ounces.

During the past year a special study was made of shrinkage stoping A large number of mines in the United States and Canada which employ this method were visited and their practices were discussed with the operating staffs. The operating data obtained are appended hereto. Data were also abstracted from the literature on other mines and are combined in tables with data personally secured by the author. References are made to these published articles, some of which have appeared as information circulars of the United States Bureau of Mines, in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and the Engineering and Mining Journal. Several of the mines referred to which have not been described in individual papers will be described in detail in information circulars to be issued by the bureau. Eventually it is planned to combine and condense the information in these circulars and present the data in bulletin form.

The effects of alloy composition, deformation temperature, heal treatment, ad inlerstilial contamination on the occurrence of deformation twins were studied. The twinning transition temperature varied with composition and was a maximuni of 140°C for the 40 pcl V composition. Tire remperature range of the transition was very narrow. Alloys of 20 to 70 pet V could he cold-rolled and exhibited profuse twinning. The alloys which did not twin at room temperature (10, 80, and 90 pel V) could plot be cold-rolled. Oxygen additions systematically lowered the transition temperatures for all vanadium contents. The transition temperature for a 30 pet V alloy increased with annealing temperature, apparently due to changes in dislocation density and configuration. Twinning did not nucleate fracture in any specimen in the 20 to 60 pet V composition range. THERE is great current interest in the refractory metals and alloys as structural materials. An important factor in considering the ductile-brittle behavior of such materials is the role of mechanical twinning as a deformation mechanism. Mechanical twins have been observed after deformation at low temperatures or at high loading rates in the pure metals iron,1 vanadium,2,3 columbium,4,5 tantalum,6 Chromium,7 molybdenum,8 and tungsten.9 Binary alloys in which mechanical twins have been observed include: iron with silicon,10 phosphorous," or aluminum;12 and chromium, molybdenum, or tungsten with rhenium.13-17 The increase in low-temperature ductility obtained by alloying the Group VI-A elements with rhenium is very important with regard to fabricability, and there has been considerable effort to understand the so-called '(rhenium effect". Factors suggested to explain this effect include:'' 1) increase in solubility of interstitial impurities with alloying (electronic effect): 2) changes in the nature of grain boundary phases; 3) changes in interfacial energies of grain boundaries and stacking faults: and 4) promotion of twinning. Although an outstanding characteristic of these alloys is the profuse twinning that accompanies low-temperature deformation, most studies of the rhenium effect have been concerned with the other factors. During recent studies of refractory-metal alloys, it was noted that solid solutions of columbium and vanadium exhibited high hardness and strength at room temperature and elevated temperature and, surprisingly, also showed considerable ductility at room temperature and below. These alloys deformed by twinning at room temperature when subjected to slow loading rates. It appeared that the low-temperature ductility resulted at least in part from the relaxation of stresses by twinning in a system where slip is difficult. IT has been 5 years since the writer left the Philippine Islands and while in that country his chief work did not lie in this field, though he has visited all but one of the localities mentioned in this article. The principal field studies relating to oil were made by his colleague, Mr. Wallace E. Pratt. The writer's investigations dealt with the general stratigraphy and paleontology of the Philippines. With the exception of the investigations made by Mr. Pratt and the writer very little information on this subject is available. A number of geologists in the employ of large oil companies have visited the Islands from time to time but, following the general rule, the public has scarcely ever been permitted to learn anything of the results. The writer is indebted to the Bureau of Insular Affairs, Washington, for late information regarding recent legislation in the Islands relating to petroleum. All the known oil seeps, petroleum residues, such as ozocerite, and natural-gas emanations are associated with Tertiary sediments. The chief seeps and most promising prospects are located as follows: 1. Bondoc Peninsula (lower end), Tayabas Province, Southeast Luzon. 2. The west coast of the island of Cebú from Alegria north to, and perhaps beyond, Toledo. 3. Central Mindanao not far from Lake Lanao. 4. The ozocerite veins on the Island of Leyte in the northwestern part in the vicinity of the town of Villaba. 5. Natural gas from some deep wells in Tertiary shale formations on the eastern flank of the Cordillera and extending out under the plain on the island of Panay.
