"The Didipio Gold-Copper project in the Philippines has been a well-defined reasonably high gold grade porphyry for almost two decades. OceanaGold are now bringing the project into production in late 2012 and have recently reoptimised the project with the goal of combining the inherent high grades with higher through-put than previously proposed that will see strong initial metal production. The project was discovered and well defined by 1995, but has seen some obstacles to development, namely sovereign risk, capital cost and project funding. The project strengths over this time that have kept the flames alive are: strong grades large orebody with low stripping ratios a simple beneficiation process and a clean high-grade concentrate strong support from the Philippines government.The initial study in 1998 used Gold and Copper price assumptions of $325/oz and $0.95 lb respectively. Today reserves are based on $950 and $2.85. So, being a porphyry with a large reducing grade halo, the deposit now lends itself to extraction on a much larger scale than before, without any significant capital expenditure as a larger open pit now dominates the project.Didipio is a game changer for OceanaGold, so it has been important to learn from history and to capitalise on a strong initial metal production profile. The project sits in a reasonably remote mountainous area of Luzon which sees annual typhoons and numerous short duration high intensity rainfall events and two rivers flowing through the project area, so it has not been without some innovative technical solutions.CITATION:Redden, R, 2012. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effect of ground water control on the dewatering of phosphatic clay wastes. Two storage impoundments were constructed. One impoundment was surrounded on three sides with a series of well points (shallow vertical wells) to lower the ambient water table and the second impoundment served as a control. Ground water was pumped from the area surrounding the test impoundment for a period of 490 days. A constant pumping rate of 60 gal/min resulted in a water table drawdown of 13 ft, approximating the bottom of the impoundment. At the end of the test period percent solids in the test impoundment was 35 pct, while in the control impoundment percent solids was only 26.8 pct. Percent solids of greater than 30 pct is required for capping and final reclamation using fertile overburden.

In various publications relating to safety in mining the Bureau of Mines has called attention to the hazards attending the use of openBame lamps. An open-flame lamp is a potential source of danger in any coal mine. It may start a fire in a dry mine or an explosion in a gaseous mine. The type of open-flame oil lamp now used in mines is the product of long evolution; its principal merit is simplicity. That such a light is unsafe in an atmosphere containing gas (methane) is evident, and Sir Humphrey Davy immeasurably increased safety in coal mines when he found means of protecting a lamp flame so that it would not readily ignite gas. The safety lamp, however, gives less light than the open-flame lamp, is not as simple in construction, is more cumbersome, and must De carried in the hand .. Consequently, some miners are reluctant to abandon the open-flame lamp for the safety lamp, and risk their own lives and the lives of their fellow workers with the one rather than to be hampered by the other. When small electric bulbs, with their clear, white light, and small electric storage batteries became available, the advantage of combining these elements for a miner's lamp seemed manifest. The combination looked simple and safe, but was soon found to have elements of danger and weakness peculiar to itself. The Bureau of Mines showed, in 1911, that the breaking of a miniature electric bulb in an inflammable mixture of gas and air might ignite the mixture, so that only the fragile glass of the lamp bulb might stand between the miner and injury or death. There Was also a possibility that sparks from the small battery would ignite gas, and the accidental spilling of the contents of a battery on the miner's clothing or skin was a possible source of injury. The first portable electric miner's lamps that were carried in the hand, or with the battery strapped to the back and the light carried on the head, were exceedingly crude and were designed without appreciation of the sources of danger. The possibility, however, of producing a safe and practical miner's lamp by the proper combination and design of the elements available promised to increase safety so greatly that the Bureau of Mines attemr>ted to stimulate better design and construction by careful investigations and the establishment of an approval system that would be an assurance to the miner and an advantage to the maker of the lamp. As a result various manufacturers submitted types of lamps, cords, and bulbs for test and cooperated with the bureau in efforts to so improve the safety features of these devices that the lamps would P&$ specific tests for approval.

Viscosity is an important parameter of copper smelting and converting processes. It affects the settling of matte or metal droplets in the slag, distribution of elements etc, Despite this importance, confusion exists on the viscosity of copper smelting slags as a result of disagreements found among the measured viscosity data of several authors especially in the slags of high ferric iron content and close to magnetite precipitation. In this work a critical review of the existing data on the viscosity of copper smelting slags has been first carried out and the effect of oxygen potential on the viscosity of copper smelting slags has been clarified through a coupled quantification of viscosity and liquidus temperature. The confusion in the literature has been clarified and the importance of the relation between the viscosity and the liquidus temperature is discussed,

The Bureau of Nines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipe- line for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. This bibliography is the compilation of the material that was collected.

The Anaconda Copper Company reportedly reached an exclusive agreement with Cook Inlet Region, Inc., to explore 24 million acres in south-central Alaska and to share equally with Cook the proceeds of any mineral discovery. According to an Anaconda geologist, "the company is anticipating, based on geologic testing, that it will find significant deposits of copper, lead, and zinc. There is also evidence of the presence of precious metals such as silver and gold, and also strong evidence of strategic minerals such as chrome, platinum, tin, and nickel." Cook Inlet Region, Inc., is owned by 6,500 Alaskan natives. Chile, which has a growing, free-market economy under President Pinochet, reportedly will no longer require companies to obtain prior governmental approval for the exploration and development of new mines.

The well-established on-line particle size analyzer OPUS manufactured by Sympatec GmbH, has been successfully implemented in several mining and industrial minerals project. OPUS monitors the particle size distribution in 31 fractions as well as the solid concentration in opaque and highly concentrated ore and mineral slurries on-line in real time e.g. behind mills or cyclones applying 31 ultrasonic frequencies for highest resolution. Ultrasonic extinction overcomes all limitations known from optical and mechanical systems like contamination, blockage and wear. OPUS measures slurries in their original state without any dilution, hence no extensive sampling procedure or sample conditioning is required thus no dilution errors occur. Due to the OPUS design and suitable algorithms entrained air bubbles do not affect the quality of analysis at all. The sensor covers particle size distributions from 0,01 to 3.000,00 µm and solid concentrations up to 70 % by volume and can be easily adapted to a number of production lines simultaneously. Jiangxi Copper?s Dexing Mine is one of the biggest copper mines in Asia and among the first users for OPUS on-line particle size and concentration analysis in mining industry. OPUS is connected to 2 process lines. Jiangxi Copper has implemented OPUS for into their central control system for the grinding & classifying circuit of one SAG mill and one ball mill. In the search for the development of more "environmentally friendly" and more intensive waste disposal approaches to meet more and more stringent environmental regulations, thermal plasma-based processes are considered one of the most promising alternatives to well- established technologies such as incineration. This paper presents an overview on the research and development status of thermal plasma-based waste remediation technologies. The properties of thermal plasma are described. Due to its unique feature of high-energy intensity and super high temperature, thermal plasma is particularly capable of destroying organic- containing wastes. Its potential and promising application to waste remediation may include: treatment of incinerator ashes; metallurgical dusts (especially, electric arc furnace dust); medical wastes; radioactive wastes; and other Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) listed hazardous wastes. Many research institutes and vendors have been involved in the development of thermal plasma-based waste treatment technology encouraged by the cleanup programs supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy (DoE) and the Department of Defense (DoD). More recently, thermal plasma-based waste treatment technologies (sometimes called plasma-enhanced pyrolysis) are focused more and more on not only just destroying organic wastes but also on how to practically, and economically recover energy contained in the organic waste materials in addition to the recovery of metals in order to offset the high operating costs.

Under the joint auspices of the Illuminating Engineering Society and the University of Pennsylvania there will be given about 20 lectures covering the general principles of illumination and the aspects of lighting practice. They will be held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, from Sept. 21 to 28, 1916, inclusive. The subject of illumination of mines will be included in this series, which will be delivered by men selected on account of their qualifications to deal authoritatively with the several phases of the subject. In connection with the lectures there will be an exhibition of the latest developments in illuminating appliances, including lamps, accessories, photometers, together with novel applications of light. There will also be an inspection tour which will include visits to manufacturing establishments, laboratories, lighting companies and notable lighting installations. "We have been very ably represented by Mr. John H. Emrick as General Chairman, assisted by our good friend Mr. Fred W. Whiteside, our secretary and treasurer. I know they have worked very hard in selecting the various committees, who in turn - by the looks of our program have gone all out to prepare material that should be of great interest to us. I trust we will be attentive to the subjects presented and freely enter into the discussions, also relating our problems and experiences. I am sure this will prove both profitable and beneficial to all present. "The main purpose of these conventions is to become acquainted with each other, renew old acquaintances, talk over our problems, and have a little fun and relaxation from our every day routine. "Let us not forget the manufacturers, the distributors, the operators, or the press because it is through their splendid support that this organization is successful. "Since our last meeting we have gained many new members, whom we especially welcome. We are sorry to have lost a few. This paper, which describes mining mothods at International Minerals & Chemical Corp, 'e. potash mine. in. Eddy. County, N. Mex., is one of a sories being prepared by the Mining Branch of the Bureau of Minos. on mining method a and practicos in, various mining districts of the United States. The mine shafts and. surface plant or International Minerals & Chemical Corp. are situated. in. sec.. 12, T. 22 S., R. 29 E., N. M. P. M., about 26-1/2 miles by paved highway east of the city of Carlsbad (figs. 1, 2, and 3). A spur line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad connects the mine with the Clovia-Pecos branch of the same road near Loving, a few miles south of Carlsbad. This spur also serves the refinery of United Staics Potash Co. This report gives. the history and describes the geology of the district. Methods of prospecting, exploration, sampling, and estimation of tonnage and values are explained; development and mining methods are discussed in con- siderable detail; transportation, ventilation and drainage are outlined; safety measures are noted; and the wage scale and organization are mentioned.

Cable bolt supports are becoming an important ground control technique in underground mines in the United States and Canada. They show great versatility and are adaptable for use with many mining techniques, they have high load-carrying capacities, they can be installed in small areas with low roots, and they are cost effective. Investigators in a number of research institutes in North America have conducted studies to assess the material and support properties of cable bolts, evaluate their support capabilities under various mining conditions, and provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under varying mining conditions. While conducting these studies, personnel have collected important information on the history, application, performance, and economics of these supports. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report documents this information so that ground control personnel unfamiliar with cable bolt supports can gain an understanding and appreciation of their use. A comprehensive bibliography of technical information on cable bolt supports was selected by the authors and is also presented.

In this paper, an innovative approach was adopted to automatically calculate the effects of tunnel induced settlement on buildings and utilities. The approach resulted in increased output quality, consistency, reduced time, cost savings and a greater ability to respond quickly to design changes. The techniques described have been applied to the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System project, located within the City of Toronto. The automation allowed a very large area of topography, tunnels (6 km), buildings (9000) and utilities (over 1000) to be rapidly evaluated. Visualization of the settlements and impacts also allowed the project design team to optimize the system design to mitigate the settlement impacts.
