Cable bolts are emerging as the newest ?twist? for roof support in U.S. underground coal mines. For decades cable bolts installed in underground metal mines in the United States and Canada used cement-based grouts for anchoring. The cement anchoring process, because of the time and expense for installation, made cable bolts impractical for use in coal mines. Today, the introduction of resin-anchored cable bolts provides a system more consistent with tradi­tional U.S. coal mine roof bolting practices and requirements. Expecta­tions are that the utilization of cable bolts for a number of U.S. mining applications will expand, particularly in coal mining.

THE Polaris-Taku mine is a new gold property, situated in the far north-west corner of British Columbia. Production was started in November, 1937, at the rate of 150 tons a day, and recently has been increased to 200 tons. The property, which promises to become one of British Columbia's important gold mines, was developed and brought into production in twenty-nine months after work was started on it as a virtual prospect in June, 1935, by Edward C. Congdon and associates. Inaccessibility, extraordinarily complicated geological problems, and difficult metallurgy retarded development of the property before acquisition by the present interests, an::l, in fact, discouraged two companies that had spent substantial sums upon it from continuing development. This paper is concerned with reviewing the development of the property and describing the principal features of the geology, the mining and metallurgical practices, and the equipment employed. The recent trend in underground mine developments is “bigger is better.” This is most certainly evident in the mine shaft and conveyances that operate within its compartments. Today, there are several new installations requiring mine cages that can transport up to 170 passengers. The technology in mine hoisting is advancing to address a combination of higher capacity requirements, deeper hoisting depths and faster winding rates, however, some areas of the hoist plant have not changed in the past 50 years. The most notable of these areas is the shaft compartment guide string and the conveyance mounted safety arrest mechanism. The technology in use today for the protection of passengers in a shaft conveyance from a hoist rope severance incident remains conceptually unchanged from Elisha Otis’ design of 1850. The actual retardation components, the safety dogs, have taken on several forms since Elisha’s invention with the last major design change occurring in the late 1940s. The arrest of a free falling shaft conveyance requires that the shaft guides withstand the energy imparted on them by the safety dogs. There are some very real limitations presented by the use of wood for this application. The new hoisting era will most certainly continue to demand larger capacity equipment, but also an increased awareness toward safety

THE NRA Administrator's casual reference to the coal code as the next "pineapple" to be fixed was a conservative estimate of his job. This thorny and adamantine morsel now looms as a critical test of NRA. A failure in coal supplies would have the gravest potentialities in the Administration's program at this time. And the loss of prestige from a breakdown of the enforcement machinery in this initial large-scale test of strength would accentuate the incipient indications of insurrection in other directions. General Johnson has had a difficult task. It involves problems festering for a quarter of a century. A succes¬sion of Presidents have been glad to tide over their respective regimens with inconclusive expedients; they have been baffled by the complexities of the technical angles and hopelessly irreconcilable concepts of powerful conflicting interests with large issues at stake.

When introducing digital training technology a practical approach helps address cultural concerns.  Solutions to help create acceptance are discussed.  Resistance to change may be deeply rooted in traditional mine training personnel.  Traditional training staff members may consider themselves less digitally-savvy and resist technological methods available to them. A transitional approach intended to help mitigate or resolve resistance is presented as a continuous improvement pathway toward full adoption.  This presentation contends every mine should welcome the benefit of a digitally connected critical enabler.  The adoption of a digitally savvy learning centre is often viewed a disrupter to existing practice.  Given a commitment-driven learning centre model, technology offers the opportunity to transition from a compliance-based training model to one of competence.  Learning and Development practitioners should welcome the latest advances in neuroscience, Bloom’s taxonomy of learning model, and principles which guide mine safety training as outlined by the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources at the University of Arizona. By employing digital applications to include animation, game-based simulations and immersive Virtual Reality (VR) these technologies create a viable digitally-savvy learning centre. We will outline the ingredients of a digitally enabled, or VR, Learning Centre to offer some observed benefits, successes, and potential short-comings. Much excitement in the industry surrounds implementation of simulation and/or VR headset training.  Given fair consideration of these as a ‘fit-for-purpose’ solution we examine the paradigm shift required to create real results for on-the-job learning.  Interim steps may be needed to meet the cultural transformation.   Simpler forms of VR, in the form of 3D models and VR environments as displayed on a large interactive touch screen, can serve to bridge this challenge and address a group learning environment. Features of the interactive 3D technology and ease of adoption are presented.  Usage of the touch screen is similar to that of a smart phone. It may be implemented as an obvious transitional tool.  To help describe merits of the interactive touch screen the presentation points out these sample underground and surface mine training applications. There are 3-D simulations such as ventilation, emergency response, support installation, and mine cycle and activity scheduling programs. These applications offer the ability to conduct entry examinations, complete digital pre-use checklists, and perform planned task observations in the virtual world of work. The tool may be used to teach the flow of hydraulics and do fault-finding on machinery such as loaders and dump trucks. Learners may navigate in a virtual mining environment to identify hazards, detect and assess abnormal ground conditions, address poor design features, and alleviate traffic constraints. It is possible to use connected physical controls to navigate machinery in the virtual environment. We conclude the presentation with a “compare and contrast” approach to cite potential cultural benefits by adopting a transitional method.

Many important materials are derived entirely or partially as byproducts of primary copper, lead, and zinc production. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines the collective role of byproducts with regard to the economics of domestic mineral production, and their individual significance in terms of dollar value, end uses, and strategic considerations. The study also analyzes circumstances that have affected the competitiveness and structure of the U.S. copper, lead, and zinc industries, and factors that impact byproduct availability. These factors include production capacity at smelters and refineries, process technology, changing sources and composition of ores, regulations, foreign ownership, and byproduct demand and price. Policy considerations regarding stockpiling, regulations, and research are assessed.

Nations worldwide are actively pursuing the exploration and extraction of these resources. This paper provides a concise overview of the mineral resources found in the deep sea, highlighting the challenges associated with their exploitation. Furthermore, it presents a comprehensive analysis of the historical development of deep-sea mining technology and equipment, offering valuable insights into this field. By examining the current issues and obstacles faced in deep-sea mineral extraction, this study concludes that the future of deep-sea mining lies in the direction of automation, intelligence, and standardization. Additionally, it identifies the key technological advancements that need to be achieved in order to overcome the challenges associated with deep-sea mining.

This is the second of two interrelated studies of waterborne transportation. The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. All the principal mineral-industry imports and exports of the gulf coast are mentioned in the report, including metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuel products, The gulf coast foreign trade in mineral industry products was determined to be composed of a small number of commodities.

In the USA, miners are at higher risk for work-related disorders that could precipitate an opioid prescription, injury-related opioid prescriptions, and opioid overdose. We aimed to support prevention of these outcomes with an “opioid hazard awareness” miner safety training module. In January and February 2020, the training module was embedded within required mining safety and health training for stone, sand, and gravel miners in Massachusetts (USA). Training impact and reception were assessed with a pre- and post-training survey of trainee characteristics, training content knowledge, and attitudes. Over 800 miners were trained and over 600 responded to surveys. We found statistically significant improvements in opioid risk factor knowledge and knowledge of resources to help a coworker. Nonstigmatizing attitudes were high both at baseline and following the training. The training was perceived as relevant and useful by trainees. Improving opioid hazard awareness in high-risk worker populations has potential to reduce opioid dependence and downstream impacts including overdose death. Employer injury-prevention efforts should be reinforced while worker health and safety training enhances awareness of opioid-related harms and prevention strategies for miners and other high-risk worker populations.

The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-cu-yd) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boon carrier, is used by a two-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 cu-yd) of steel fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per 11-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control are performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

The underground mining process, from in situ characteristics of the unmined rock mass to the final mill product with fully liberated minerals, consists of a chain of unit operations. Some of them influence fragmentation while fragmentation impacts others. From a production point of view, fragmentation is a key parameter for the proper functioning of many unit operations and affects total production; it influences the ability to load, haul and crush the rock later in the process. Fragmentation varies because of rock mass strength, the presence of joints, the chosen explosive, specific charge (kg/m3) and quality of drill holes. The efficiency and result of unit operations such as drilling, blasting, loading and crushing depend on the rock properties, which vary throughout a mine. Generally speaking, operations are not well adapted to the actual rock properties, leading to a non-optimised flow in production. This paper presents the initial part of a project that will build knowledge on the impact of fragmentation on each step of the production chain in an underground mine. It identifies the key parameters of fragmentation, which influence the overall energy consumption and productivity in a mining operation through interviews, mine visits and a literature review. In the subsequent stages of the project, a number of field tests in the case study mine will address important segments of the production process where fragmentation is a major obstacle to improvements. Olympic Dam is the eighth largest Cu deposit and the largest U deposit in the world, with approximately 35 million tonnes of contained Cu and 1.2 million tonnes of U. The most recent resource estimate was for 2.95 billion tonnes of mineralised material with average grades of 1.2 per cent Cu, 0.4 kg/t U, 0.5 g/t Au, 2.6 g/t Ag as contained mineral resources. Olympic Dam is expected to produce >200 000 tonnes of Cu and 4200 tonnes of U3O8 from 9.8 million tonnes of ore in 2004, making it the 12th largest Cu producer in the world. One of the impediments to achieving targeted rates of production has been oversize material (>0.9 m) reporting to stope draw points. A major contributor to oversize material may be overbreak along pre-existing structural weaknesses from stope walls and backs during the production life of a stope. Underbreaking to structures can also have a detrimental effect on the performance of a stope. In an effort to understand the influence of structural geology on stope performance, WMC Resources and SRK Consulting partnered during 2003 to refine the current system of structural mapping, and to use historical data to produce a structural interpretation covering a large part of the mining area. The interpretation has been wireframed in DATAMINETM into a three-dimensional structural framework model. To date, there are more than 600 structures of >50 m strike length incorporated into the structural framework model, which covers a study area 1500 m + 600 m + 350 m. A back-analysis exercise to assess the influence of interpreted structures on overbreak and underbreak was completed for laser-surveyed stopes.

The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

Surveying is to tunneling, as a steering wheel is to a car—somewhat essential if you want to end up in the right place. The principles of tunnel surveying have remained unchanged since the first tunnels were constructed: To mathematically connect the selected start and end points of a tunnel and physically translate that alignment onto the ground. The alternative is just dead-reckoning and leaves the probably less than satisfying end results to chance. Today’s laser-guided tunnels often have to thread the needle through a maze of soil types, utilities, structural features and other underground considerations. Surveying makes it possible.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Final Report Volume III - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 94-l Bridge Conveyor describes the various noise control modifications to the bridge conveyor, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information.

The Nonmetals Division studies problems relating to the use of minerals, many of which are important to national defence for purposes other than the extraction of metals. In fact, virtually all of the work of the division has been diverted to investigations pertaining to better use of the Nation's natural nonmetallic is resources as weapons of defense. The experiment stations of the division are at Norris, Tenn.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Seattle, Wash.; and College Park, Md. Studies involving the application of electric power to the nonmetallic minerals are conducted at the Electrotechnical Laboratory at Norris, and investigations on mineral-dressing treatment are conducted mainly at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa. The cleaning and preparation of coal are studied at both Tuscaloosa and the Northwest Experiment Station Lit Seattle (other projects relating to utilization of coal are conducted by the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines). Problems covering the use of minerals and fundamental problems as to their properties are studied at College Park.
