RECORD production of portland cement, crushed limestone, marble, lime, and clays highlighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1959. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite, and third in output of iron ore, scrap mica, and native asphalt. Alabama's mineral industry was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and iron ore, which accounted for 51 percent of the total value of production in 1958 and 1959. Other important industries were cement manufacturing, petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of United States Steel Corp. (coal;. iron ore, limestone, lime, and magnesium compounds), Southern Cement Co. Division of American-Marietta Co. (cement, lime, limestone, and miscellaneous clay) , Woodward Iron Co. (coal and iron ore), Alabama Power Co. (coal), and Ideal Cement Co. (cement lime, and miscellaneous clay) .

China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars.How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue?Geology of the Moon and asteroids — Why do we want to mine there?Space enterprises are actively working toward establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2.Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral-rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind."

Operator efficiency and control capability along with cost effectiveness have been the quest of mining, industrial, and mobile hydraulic engineers for years. The majority of the functions in present day fluid power systems are controlled by on/off control valves. They are inexpensive and provide easy installation and operation, but they lack the quality of fine control of load flow or what is sometimes known as "feathering the load". An alternate approach to obtaining this capability is the use of electro-hydraulic servo-valves, but their implementation into a system is complex, and they are expensive. As a result, electrohydraulic systems are still used primarily in the aerospace industry. Of late, a compromise seems to have evolved between the on/ off control systems and the servo-technology is the so-called proportional flow control valves. A proportional flow control valve meters fluid to the load in proportion to the input command from the operator. In principle, it is similar to a conventional flow control valve and is tailored to meet the control requirements from the load point of view. The hydraulic system using this valve usually works in an open-loop mode with the operator closing the loop. Incorporating load-sensing mechanisms and adoption of electrical/electronic signalling into the valve make it the "ideal valve" which designers have been looking for from a techno-economic point of view.

This report describes the effects of water shortage on Arizona's mineral industries. The information presented was obtained in interviews with company representatives. Operations covered included all State metal mines using substantial quantities of water and all concentrators and smelters. Also included in the survey were 8 operations in the nonmetallic group; 22 in the plating, metal-fabricating, and metal-forming categories; 1 public-utility power company; and 6 water companies. The extent of the water shortage in Arizona is reflected in mineral- industry water-use practices, in the high cost and low quality of water used at many operations, and in the stringency of State control of well drilling and pumping. Many mineral-industry operations are among those users most seriously affected by the uneven water supply.

The use of coke in metallurgy, to any important degree, dates from the middle of the 18th century. Its utilization came most opportunely for European civilization. The forests of Europe, except in the most remote and inaccessible regions, had been largely fed, in the form of charcoal, into the smelting furnaces. For a hundred years—the middle of the 17th to the middle of the 18th century—there .was a stationary condition of population corresponding to the exhaustion of European forests. This situation, which was particularly evident in Great Britain, was due to the fact that the forests had been depleted and the practical utilization of coke had not begun. The coking industry is essential for our metallurgical industries, which in turn are basal to healthy economic progress. But coke is of great importance, not only on its own account, but for its byproducts, which enter fundamentally into all the arts of peace and war. The dyestuff industry and the manufacture of explosives are intimately connected with one another, as was shown by the recent war. The subject of coking coal, therefore, is well worthy the serious attention both of practical industry and the scientific investigator. The most valuable coking coals, from the metallurgical standpoint, are derived from the coals of highest ranks. Coals, for example, that have a carbon ratio of from 70 to 80 per cent. yield the most valuable coke for the blast furnace. The difficulty of investigating these coals, however, is great, for they are rather friable and delicate and possess a high carbon content, which makes them difficult to manipulate. They present, on account of their high carbon content, a considerable degree of opacity when examined, in thin sections, under the microscope. The tenderness of structure and blackness of such high-grade coking coals as those of Connellsville and the Pocahontas region make them extremely difficult to investigate. Two of my colleagues, who are taking part in this discussion, will describe the valuable results that have been reached by studying coal by the methods of the mineralogist. Since its development, the functional performance equation for ball milling (McIvor, 1988) has facilitated a new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the functional performance mill grinding rate at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining selection rate and breakage size distribution functions. The much simpler ball mill model has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from functional performance analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/ material provider and circuit designer.

"The Mining Information Technology User Group considers information to be a strategic enabler to improved business performance in mining. This ad hoc group has been meeting since 2000 to share knowledge and leverage their efforts in effectively using IT in mining. In this paper, core issues to mining IT are reviewed, along with initiatives to engage industry professionals and decision-makers in the potential for improved use of information in their operations. Relevance of IT to Canadian MiningMining operations always drive to improve their performance, and so far they have succeeded by using different technologies. While economies of scale have come in fragmentation and material handling, and energy usage has improved through conservation and design of integrated mineral processing plants, these systems have the net result of tightening operational constraints, through reduced excess capacity. There are higher opportunity costs of lost production when integrated, large-scale systems are operating in a sub-optimal way.The problem is that it is profoundly difficult to run a mine in an optimal way. Optimization requires a defined objective function (e.g., profit), which is hard to pose, let alone solve, because so many inter-related aspects of an operation affect the bottom line. Even for a small, well-defined process state, it is difficult to measure all the pertinent information with sufficient accuracy to ensure that the system is performing well in real time.The art of mining remains making good decisions with uncertainty: in the orebody delineation; in the allocation of resources; in the efficiency of the operation; in the reliability of components and systems; and in responding to the downstream market. As well, individual decision-makers need to know how their decisions affect other processes and systems, so that improvements in one part of an operation do not result in such degraded performance in the rest of the plant that overall profitability goes down."

"The successful design of a new mine water pumping system is in part dependent upon the accuracy with which the operating conditions can be forecast. This paper outlines the data which should be obtained on water quantity and quality. Methods of modifying the quality are also discussed. Some pumping systems for disposal of sludge are described, citing operating examples. The various types of mine dewatering pumps are described in terms of design characteristics as they affect operating efficiency and installation and maintenance costs. Piping system parameters are outlined. Finally, a hypothetical case study of pumping from a depth of 3,000 ft is assessed, with particular reference to capital costs.IntroductionMany mine operators would agree that the pumping system usually receives a low engineering priority during the design stage, and as a consequence causes some of the most frustrating problems during production. For a ""dry"" mine (up to 200 gpm), design of the pumping system may indeed be simple, but outside of the potash industry such mines are not common. For ""wet"" mines, the pumping system is important because it significantly affects the initial capital and on-going energy costs of the mine and, in the area of sludge disposal, the working conditions and production costs. Indeed, a failure in the pumping system usually has serious, and sometimes disastrous, consequences.The intent of this paper is to outline the factors which should be considered in the design of a pumping system and to describe the types of pumps used in mine dewatering and relate them to practical operating systems."

Generated by excitation coil, the working magnetic field distributes specially in separation area. Under the combined effect of the background field, excitation and demagnetic field and gravity, the mineral particles float downwards in the form of magnetic chains, and interact with the rising water. As it’s a kind of strong magnetic mineral, we must adopt the weak magnetic separation equipment in magnetic separation process to realize removing Si and lowering impurities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

Under the Heavy Metals Program, investigations were conducted at the old Badger dill placer mini in Nevada County California to collect data and information regarding drilling and sampling methods and deposit characteristics. The studies contributed to a team effort by five Bureau of Mines research groups to develop new or improved placer mining technology in the Tertiary gold-bearing channel gravel of northern California. This report describes the techniques used and the results obtained in the sampling and drilling stage of deposit delineation studies that were conducted by the Denver Mine Systems Engineering Group. Sampling included the collection and processing of 400 tons of largo and small volume samples from drill holes, underground workings, surface pits, and blast hole rounds. A total of 355 samples averaging 2,296 pounds per sample provided reasonably accurate data for analysis of the gold distribution. These studies indicate that the bulk of the gold is within 40 foot of bedrock in stacked, lenticular zones of cemented gravel that are largely confined to the relatively narrow, meandering course of the deepest portion of the bedrock channel. Drilling studies involved the testing of three types of truck-mounted drills including rotary, bucket and vibratory, none of which proved to be a completely versatile tool for sampling quickly and reliably both consolidated and unconsolidated gravel.

The CANMET Western Research Centre (CWRC) has developed a hydrocyclone model simulation of dewatering and fine particle separation circuits. The simulation is based on an existing empirical model. Utilizing a cyclone manufacturer’s published data, some modifications have been developed and integrated into the model. Feed stream characteristics, cyclone mechanical dimensions, and operating conditions are used in the CWRC modelling simulation. The computer results are presented in 3D graphs and corresponding 2D maps showing the cyclone mass recovery, percent solids by mass in underflow and overflow, and cut size as functions of the cyclone apex diameter and cyclone throughput (i.e., inlet pressure or pressure drop). Results of the computer simulation have been used in the economic feasibility and design of several dewatering circuits in oil sand plants.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.

At the present time, the Florida phosphate industry is experiencing one of the worst marked slumps in its one hundred year history. Recent agriculture over-production has caused low grain prices such that the net income of U.S. farmers is expected to drop to its lowest level since the 1932 depression. The farmers' low income, along with high interest rates that preclude them from borrowing to purchase fertilizer, make the immediate U.S. phosphate market outlook bleek at best. The export outlook is also pessimistic due to world recession and the U.S. dollar's high exchange rate. In June, 26% of the phosphate industry's workers were laid off for an indefinite period of time. Despite the immediate painful slump, the long-term outlook for the industry looks good. Florida has enormous reserves and will continue to produce a third of the world's phosphate supply simply by making changes in the present system of mining, beneficiation, waste disposal and land reclamation.

The Upgraded Coal Interest Group (UCIG), focuses on clean, low-cost options for coal-based power generation via pre-combustion, co-firing and reburn options. Its mission is to preserve and expand the economic use of coal for energy. By reducing the fuel costs and environmental impacts of coal-fired power generation, existing units become more cost effective and thus new units utilizing advanced combustion technologies are more likely to be coal-fired. Two great forces are reshaping the power generation industry, the Clean Air Act Amendment and deregulation of generation. The Clean Air Act Amendment is forcing change by making it necessary for power producers to plan for reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and possibly trace elements. At the same time, deregulation of generation is forcing utilities to focus their attention closely on the short term impact of any change on cost of power. Fuel is a utility's largest cost element; maximum fuel flexibility will be a utility's best weapon in an environment of rapid change. In a regulated environment, a utility was limited in how involved he might get into fuel supply, in a purely deregulated environment he need only be guided by the impact on the bottom line. It is clear that these two forces will promote a close look at factors such as coal upgrading which can have an impact on the availability of low sulfur coal or emission of NOX and trace elements.

THE de-silverizing of base bullion at the Port Pirie works is carried out in accordance with the principles of the well-known Parkes process. The base bullion produced by the blast furnace department carries (apart from silver values) impurities, the chief of which are copper, antimony, and arsenic. In order to more clearly indicate the grade of the base bullion, the following analysis, representative of a half-year's production of base bullion, is submitted...Before proceeding with the actual operation of de-silverizing, it is necessary that the impurities, copper, antimony, and arsenic, should be eliminated. This is accomplished in the following steps :- (1) Removal of Coppel - Copper is largely present in the base bullion as dissolved sulphide, and this is removed by liquation in a reverberatory type furnace, of which the following are the essential details :-Working temperature 7500 to 8500 C.Coal consumption per 24 hours 2 tons.The hearth of the furnace is encased in a steel tank 22 ft. 4 in. long by 13 ft. 4 in. wide by 2 ft. 10 in. deep; the bottom of the tank is covered by a depth of composition conforming to the invert :-Cement 39 cwt.Brick dust 8.4 tons.Fireclay 0.6 tons.Sand 0.6 tons...

HOLLINGER mining operations have required development by 24 vertical shafts having a total length of 28,160 feet. Seventeen of these are sunk from surface and seven are interior shafts. Four surface shafts and three interior shafts are now active and, excepting the recently completed new main ore-hoisting shaft, the remainder are either abandoned, or are used for passes or for ventilation. The new shaft bottoms 60 feet below the 3,050 level, but there is much work to be done before it is placed in service. The term 'shaft practice' is intended to include shaft construction and a general treatment o typical equipment. It is a large subject for an organization the size of Hollinger and this paper is intended only to present the salient features.
