This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These and microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproductions of all declassified reports . A Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports is issued weekly by the Department of Commerce , Office of the Publication Board , and is sold by the Superintendent of Documents , Government Printing Office , Washington 25 , D. C. , on a subscription basis . An initial payment of 10 dollars will provide for approximately 9 months , and subscribers will be notified when additional remittance is necessary . Numerous reports on the activities of German synthetic - liquid -fuels plants and the plants for the production of synthesis gas from solid fuels are available in the same office as the Solid Fuels Reports . It is planned to publish in this series of Information Circulars the more important reports or combinations of reports prepared by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . This report provides the results of a two year study of the projected time and cost requirements for new mine development in Wisconsin and is based on a unique blend of information from mining company officials, state regulatory agency officials and contractor experience. Through formal cooperative and review agreements with Kennecott Copy per Corporation, Exxon Minerals Co., U.S.A. and Noranda Mines Ltd., and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources plus informal arrangements with knowledgeable Wisconsin persons, lists of the tasks and subtasks required to plan a new mine in Wisconsin were developed. Times and costs were assigned to all tasks and subtasks and these data reviewed by all cooperators. Critical Path Method Diagrams were then developed for a generalized mining project. Total time and cost for the premine planning process was estimated to be 25..1 years and 223 person-years of professional time excluding public affairs effort respectively. By eliminating redundancies in the process and by increasing project efficiency through early public review and participation, recom¬mendations were made to lessen the time and lower the cost of premine planning. The streamlining recommendations could shorten the overall critical path length to 18.16 years and lower the cost to 208 person-years of professional time excluding public affairs effort. The estimated distribution of professional effort (cost) for mine planning in Wisconsin approximates 50.5% for traditional mine engineering tasks, 36.6% for environmental-regulatory tasks and 12.9% for traditional geological-exploration tasks.

Magotteaux, with the co-operation of Anglo Platinum, has erected a fully instrumented pilot plant at Frank concentrator, which is being used to study the influence of a variety of grinding parameters. This paper will discuss only the influence of mill speed and pulp density on secondary stage grinding. A Ø0.82 x1 m open circuit mill was used with reclaimed Merensky tailings as feed. The conclusions apply to this pilot plant but further investigation needs to be done to verify whether the same trends will be applicable to a large industrial-scale mill.

The barite industry has made notable progress since the days when barite was used only as an adulterant in white-lead paints and the only method of mining it was with pick and shovel. The following chronological record may serve to show how this heavy white mineral has grown in importance in the national exonomy and at the same time to indicate development of methods for obtaining it. 1845. - Barite first, mined in Fauquier County, Va., for use as an adulterant in white-lead paints. 1850 (approx.). - French settlers 60 miles southwest of St Louis, Mo., discovered barite; called it "'tiff;' meaning white. It was mined and shipped to St. Louis for use in paint.

"Ilmenite is the most important titanium-bearing constituent of titaniferous iron ores. Such ores, of which the United States has abundant reserves, are of interest because they constitute an important potential source of both iron and titanium that may be tapped in times of stress, and which eventually may be utilized in the normal course of events.As the iron and titanium constituents of titaniferous iron ores are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, any process for metal recovery will, of necessity, involve reduction of the iron in ilmenite. Consequently, knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite should supplement information already available concerning those ores. With this in view, the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines undertook to evaluate thermodynamic properties; the data obtained are the subject of this report.Three types of experimental work were involved. First, low-temperature specific heats of ilmenite were measured in the temperature range 500 to 29S° K. These data serve to evaluate the entropy, a quantity necessary for a reliable evaluation and correlation of other thermodynamic properties. Second, high-temperature heat-content measurements were made in the temperature range 298° to 1,743° K. The data serve to bridge the gap between room temperature and elevated reduction-process temperatures. Finally, hydrogen-reduction equilibria were measured in the temperature range 1,220° to1,375° K. These data-give a direct measure of the free energy of reduction of ilmonite at these temperatures and, in conjunction with results of the other two types of measurements, serve to obtain the heat of formation of ilmenite, a quantity not readily determinable by direct calorimetric means.The data are correlated to form a composite, self-consistent portrayal of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite, which may be used in evaluating the efficacy of any reducing agent of known thermodynamic properties. Selective-reduction of iron in ilmenite by hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon are considered in this report."

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

Electric Arc Furnaces keep evolving into highly powerful melting units, shrinking taptotap times by increasing the effectiveness of the energy sources and the material fluxes used in the process. Steelmakers are targeting to increase the efficiency of their injection package in order to reduce the overall conversion costs, seeking for technologies specifically designed to promote the metallurgical reactions in a predictable and reproducible process automatically controlled at the correct timing. Many technological enhancements have focused in the gas management, improving the burner design and the penetration capacity of oxygen injectors, dedicated to decarburization and the other exothermic reactions. Instead, lower evolution efforts have been addressed to engineered solutions for managing the addition of solid materials required in slag forming, although they are playing a key role in EAF process optimization, as well. The paper describes the latest solutions designed to manage efficiently the injection of fuel, oxygen and powdered materials in several EAFs and presents the operational results achieved. Accurate control of reliable additions of coal, lime and magnesia proved crucial for the control of the slag FeO and viscosity, generating stable foamy slag and producing cleaner steel.

Ion exchange (IX) has been in use for a long time, references to IX are made in The Bible, Exodus Chapter 15 vs. 22-25 ?and the waters were made sweet?.1, 2 Aristotle noted a reduction in the salt content of water when passed through certain types of sand, a phenomena probably associated with ion exchange characteristics of zeolites. Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? Uranium, Thorium and transuranic elements ? Rare Earths ? Gold, Silver and platinum group metals (PGM?s) ? Chromium, Copper, Zinc, Nickel, Cobalt ? The Bafq - Saghand ore belt (metallogenic zone) is the main region, where the major discovered Uranium resources are located. This belt is a unique Upper Precambrian terrane experienced Katanga ? Pan African tectono ? thermal events. The oldest sialic crust was formed during the middle Proterozoic and followed by K-granite intrusions of Lufilian Cycle (850-800 M.Y.).This event caused Tectono ? Magmatic ? Activization (T.M.A) characterized by intracontinental rifting and associated ore formations. This zone was considered as an iron ore belt in 1960s ? 1970s, and U ? Th ? REE belt in 1980s ? 1990s, but by new discovered of U ? Mo (Co, Au, As, Cu) mineralization is assigned as a U - Polymetal zone, hosting the full sequences of iron oxide (Cu, Au, U) ore forming groups. On the basis of detailed investigations this zone is characterized by the following peculiarities: This zone is the vestigial vessel of Gondwana basement, where the oldest granite and the first platform clastic cover is exposed. This zone is marginal part of Precambrian continental crust, consolidated in 1.3-1.0 B.a. The sub mature continental crust experienced Lufilian Orogenic and Katanga ? Pan African Tectono ? Thermal event by intercontinental rifting, and ore mineralizations. The ore forming stages were sequential processes, started by enriched mantle derived metallogeny, and ended by interaction of silanes/ HACONS (derived from outer core) with crust. The magnetite- apatite (REE, Ti) metallogeny developed from alkaline- ultrabasic magmatic differentiation, capable to from Au- Ni- Sulfide intrusive massifs during 850- 800 Ma. Degassing of silanes/HACONS from deeper level, not only caused mantle enrichment, and plume upwelling as a frontal load, but also played the main role to develop regional Si (-Na-K-Mg-Ca-Co3) metasomatism, and formation of U- Th- Ti- REE- (apatite, magnetite) deposits. The latest (583-510 Ma old) felsic magmatism was major IGU from U-Mo (-Co-As-Au-?Cu?) hydrothermal vein- type deposits. The albitite- type U- Ti- REE (Th) mineralization could be formed by interaction of ascending, and descending solutions along the deep- rooted structural conduits.

"Lately, the development work in closed circuit grinding has mainly been focused on mills and on different types of instrumentation, mathematical models and automation in spite of the fact that the poor efficiency of the classifier is well known. It has also been proven by several investigations that by improving the sharpness of classifier separation, remarkable technical and economical advantages can be achieved. Some attempts to improve the performance of the most common classifier, hydrocyclone, have been made, among them injection of wash water above the spigot cyclone and retreatment of either or both of the products of the primary classifier. No method has been successful enough to achieve general adoption in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some industrial results achieved by two-stage classification where the coarse product of the turbulent-flow classifier, hydrocyclone, is cleaned in a laminar-flow cone classifier.The main target of the adoption of the two-stage classification circuit it naturally to improve the sharpness of size separation. This again leads to the following advantages in the grinding process:- lower circulating load and increased capacity- lower energy consumptionnarrower size distribution in the fine product- less overgrinding and less slimes- reduced specific surface areaThese improvements, no doubt, reflect on the subsequent concentrating process in the following aspects:the rate of flotation is improved, less reagents and energy is neededthe recovery and grade of valuable minerals in concentrates is improved- savings in dewatering can be expected- less fines in tailings improve the conditions for water recirculation."

THE origin of spontaneous combustion in collieries is, of course, chiefly due to bad system in laying out the pits, unclean workings, insufficient ventilation, and neglect in damming off works after they are exhausted of the main coal. This is particularly indispensable in the Richmond field, because it is difficult and dangerous here, on account of the inferior roof, to remove the last vestiges of coal ; and we are compelled also to retain all the slates and bands, as far as possible, in the pit, to help fill up, although such material is liable to fire. This, however, can be prevented to a great extent, as mentioned below. I am satisfied that the only system of working this thick coal is by cross-cutting (Querbau, ouvrage & travers) or working in benches, as practiced in France (Creusot, Rive de Gier, St. Etienne), in Silesia (Kiinigsgrube), which I have used as far as it is practicable in an old pit, almost torn to pieces by former workings. Modifications may, of course, be needed, even in the same pit, on account of irregularities in the seam. I am also satisfied for economical reasons (on account of the heavy cost for timbering) that pits here ought to be worked upwards, even if it requires a longer period of time to win the coal, and a greater outlay of capital to commence with. The various saddle-shaped " troubles " making natural minor basins in the main basin aid in the execution of this plan. A pit worked once ought to be worked out clean, given up, and dammed off forever. If sections of proper height are assumed, according to the required amount of production for a certain period of time, they ought to be worked out and filled in as much as possible, dammed off, and ultimately allowed to fill up with water, in order to protect the upper works in future from fire in the gob below. This I consider indispensable, because we may not be able profitably to fill in all the ground. To do so we have to use the waste of the mine, although it is liable to fire in time. In using this stuff, it ought to be surrounded by walls of rock not liable to take fire, laid firmly in clay, the gob being in the middle, and firmly covered and packed with clay on top. In

"Effect of mill speed on grinding kinetics has been investigated with a view to using mill speed as a manipulated variable for control and optimization of the grinding circuit performance under variable ore hardness conditions. Dry and wet batch grinding tests were carried out for quartz, limestone and cement clinker in a 29 cm x 18 cm laboratory ball mill. Mill speed values selected were 55 and 70% critical. In the case of dry grinding operation, with an exception of quartz, for all materials studied the effect of mill speed on grinding rate was found to be insignificant for sizes finer than about 35 mesh. In the case of wet operation, grinding rates were found to be approximately proportional to the mill speed. The implications of these results are discussed.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that mill speed has a considerable effect on the grinding rate of the ore particles l-3 For particles of a given size there is an optimum speed at which mill grinding efficiency is maximum (i.e. specific energy consumption is minimum) 3•4. Mill speed can, therefore, be effectively used as a manipulated variable to deal with the disturbances arising from changes in the size and hardness (grinding rate) of the ore being fed to the grinding circuit. Though, it has not been the case so far, with recent developments of ring motors2 and frequency inverters5 a continuous variation of mill speed has now become feasible, and it is expected that mill speed control will soon be a regular feature of plant operation2,6."

"Subway Line Number 4 is one of the newest additions to the Rio de Janeiro subway network. Built for the 2016 Olympic Games, the 16 km (10 mi) subway line connects the south of the city, with the famous beaches Copacabana and Ipanema, to Barra da Tijuca, west of the city, where the Olympic Village and Park are located. This new line, which is estimated to cost USD 2.2 billion, is composed of six new stations: Jardim Oceanico, São Conrado, Gavea, Antero de Quintal, Jardim de Alah (JA) and Nossa Senhora da Paz Station.Brasfond participated in the construction of foundations and retaining structures for all the stations, and each presented unique challenges. This is not surprising considering the difficulties present in a highly-dense urban environment including utilities, nearby buildings, traffic limitations and noise.Of all the stations, JA Station was the most challenging to construct. It was located in the middle of an avenue between residential high rises supported on shallow foundations as well as below sea level in sands with high groundwater. The other five stations were located in small parks and squares, with no buildings in the immediate proximity.The interaction between designer, owner, and the general and foundation contractors during execution was key in safely reducing the construction schedule. This was significant given the unforeseen construction delays the client, Linha 4 Sul JV, faced due to permitting, utility and traffic relocation so that the owner could fulfill their final goal: making the line operational by the Olympic Games. The GeologyGeologically, the state of Rio de Janeiro is formed by Pre- Cambrian crystalline basement rock. Its geological formation is very old and comprises two major orogenic cycles, a Mid-Precambrian formation, called “Transamazonian” (Proterozoic Era), and an Upper-Precambrian to Cambrian called “Brasiliano” (Proterozoic-Paleozoic). The soil structure of the city of Rio de Janeiro is represented by a core of crystalline rocks, usually granite-gneiss, covered with a layer of residual soil and/or partially weathered rock.JA Station is located in a Rio de Janeiro neighborhood called Ipanema, between the Atlantic Ocean and Lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas. Local geology is composed of a superficial soil, consisting of medium to coarse grained sands. Top of rock varied significantly from 20 m (66 ft) deep on one side of the station to 33 m (108 ft) on the other. Water is at a depth of 3 m (10 ft)."

Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.
