The EMEM Awards of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) were formally launched on 3 March 2000 by Ms Susan Shabangu, Deputy Minister at the Department?s Mineralia Centre in Pretoria. The launch was attended by invited guests from the mining and aggregate industries ,representatives of the Patron Organisations (see below),non- government and scientific organizations, the media, other government departments involved with mining environmental management and members of staff of the DME both nationally and regionally.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. Toward the end of 1920 , the average grades of ground feldspar offered to the pottery industry were so poor and so generally unsatisfactory that many of the largest consumers decided to take active steps for their own protection . A few of the potters made arrangements to grind their own feldspar , while others asked the Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of the problem and to suggest methods of improvement . Accordingly such a study was undertaken, the partial results of which are outlined in this preliminary report . The outstanding features of the present feldspar industry which are of interest in this connection are stated below. (1 ) Many grinding companies do not own or control all or even a major part of their sources of crude material , but buy in job lots from many sources . (2 ) There is great need of more adequate engineering and chemical control over mines and mills . ( 3) ~ Out of date , inefficient methods and equipment for mining and grinding are in common use . (4) Little or no cooperation exists between feldspar producers , but on the contrary many feldspar companies are exceedingly secretive . This tends towards (a) preservation of obsolete methods ; ( b ) want of knowledge of the essential features of production , market requirements , and the relation between total milling and consuming capacities of the country; ( c ) inefficient and often mistaken trade practices ; ( d) unprofitable and even ruinous competition in dull periods . (5) The small size of many feldspar deposits precludes maintenance of an efficient organization at each individual mine . ( 6 ) Many of the best deposits of feldspar situated close to railroads are becoming depleted , which results in gradual lowering of grades , and increase in cost for better grades . (7) There is a lack of exact mowledge of the ceramic properties and behaviour of feldspar by some consumers , which results in ( a) purchase of feldspar on the basis of price alone , thus encouraging low production costs at the expense of quality , and ( b) inefficient and expensive cross- hauling of both crude and ground feldspar .

"INTRODUCTIONOn November 10, 1982 Nor and a Inc signed an agreement with Golden Sceptre Resource Ltd. and Goliath Gold Mines Ltd. to construct a mine and milling facility.The Golden Giant mine is located in the Marathon area of north - western Ontario, immediately north of Highway 17 and about- 3.5 km west of Highway 614.With the exception of selected unit processes, the mill was designed for a nominal throughput of 2500 tonnes per day with early operating data to be used to identify sections requiring possible expansion to achieve an ultimate throughput of 3000 tonnes per day.Commissioning of the highly instrumented milling complex which includes crushing, grinding, cyanidation, and carbon in pulp processes commenced in February 1985. After water testing various sub-circuits from grinding through tailings, waste ore was introduced to ensure proper mechanical and electrical operation of process equipment.The first ore was milled as a mixture with waste on March 4, 1985. The first gold bullion was poured April 6, 1985.Initially, ore was only available from mine development at a rate of 700 t/d, which was milled at a minimum rate of 1200 t/d. While regular weekly shut downs of two to three days was useful for mechanical maintenance, changes, and modifications, process tuning was more difficult due to the non-steady operation. As increased quantities of ore became available, regular weekly shutdowns tapered off and process operation improved accordingly. For testing purposes and as ore was available, mill throughput was increased regularly to 2300 t/d and for very short periods of time to nearly 3000 t/d.No major design or operating problem has been encountered to date. The following is a brief description of the milling process and various operating highlights. Process flowsheets are shown in Figures 1 through 6."

Some coal mining operations in the Powder River Basin are currently observing a number of blast holes detonating sympathetically within their cast blasts. Sympathetic detonation can cause poor cast results, high blast vibration levels, excessive back break and fly rock, along with a number of other undesirable blast results. The reduction or the total elimination of blast hole sympathetic detonation is of paramount importance to the coal mining companies operating in the Powder River Basin. This paper describes a systematic approach to prevent cast blast holes from detonating sympathetically through the use of the electronic initiation and expanded blast patterns. In-situ measurements outlined in this paper were recorded from pressure probes, velocity of detonation probes and near field accelerometers, along with digital images generated from a high speed CCD camera. Large diameter angled drill holes were also checked for any measurable amount of deviation by a cable type borehole measurement tool. The field measurements provided the scientific evidence, statistical data, and documentation necessary to develop a sound method or a “road map” that would minimize and in some situations prevent the occurrence of blast hole sympathetic detonation.

Accurate representation of the geotechnical resistance distribution is critical in evaluating the performance of piles and pile groups for design. A current practice is to infer the geotechnical resistance distribution based on measured changes in strain during conventional top load pile testing. Especially for drilled and bored piles, the residual load is typically assumed to be negligible both during testing and after the application of the structure load. A practical result is that the compressive structural load is anticipated to be opposed primarily by the shaft resistance with little or no mobilized toe resistance. The predicted top deflection is estimated as the combined elastic compression plus the movement necessary to mobilize shaft resistance. The development of residual load (and associated negative skin friction) results in a significantly different design condition. Negative skin friction tends to force the pile into the ground and develops residual load in the pile that contributes to the internal compressive load. Significant toe resistance can be mobilized in order to resist the combination of negative skin friction and the sustained compressive load. The pile movement becomes a function of the toe penetration required to mobilize sufficient resistance to reach a balance of forces. In an effort to study the development of residual load in augered cast-in place (ACIP) piles, the authors installed and monitored strain gages that were embedded in an 18-inch diameter ACIP pile at a site in southeast Georgia. The results of this study indicate that residual load develops over time and reaches a distribution that is consistent with the principles of the unified design of piles. It is concluded that residual load develops in ACIP piles (as well as all drilled and bored piles by the same mechanisms) and that the residual load should be considered in the interpretation of load tests and in the pile design, particularly in the estimation of the single pile and pile group settlement.

This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.

This report presents the results of a three-phase investigation of the feasibility of using cemented coal waste in active underground coal mines to prevent mine subsidence. Coal caste was broadly defines to include waste from both coal preparation plants and coal-fired power plants. Underground systems with potential for cemented backfill are determined through identification of current mining methods and available technologies for cemented backfilling and consideration of materials and systems constraints upon mining and backfilling integration technical concerns including operation, health and safety, materials utilization, environmental impact, applicability and techni¬cal status are assessed for six (6) systems which were identified as potentially feasible. Two (2) of these systems are conceptualized in a hypothetical case history and developed to further assess their operational and economic feasibility. Comparisons of costs among both systems and with costs of surface disposal are presented. Also presented are the conclusions reached concerning the present feasibility of using cemented backfill in active coal mines and potential avenues for further research. Appendices contain further consideration for design of cemented mixtures to be used in backfilling, the results of laboratory testing of mixtures rich varying concentrations c: waste products and cementing agents, and an annealed bibliography

Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

Mining up to depths of 5 000 m would be a world first and, accordingly, no previous experience in the determination of acceptable heat stress limits, criteria or indices is wholly applicable. However, some South African gold mines are already operating at depths beyond 3000 m and much of the knowledge gained in reaching and working at such depths will be helpful in making adequate provision for acceptable environmental control at the greater depths being contemplated. Accordingly, it is necessary to take cognisance of the industry?s experience in deep-level mining and of standards and regulations already established in South Africa and elsewhere in order to ensure acceptable working conditions and control standards, that compare favourably and defensibly with those in other mining industries. The local and international use of heat stress limits, criteria and indices were investigated as it was necessary to determine to what extent any other indices, limits or criteria would be applicable to South African deep mine conditions. In addition, it was necessary to establish whether there was a single heat stress index that could be used for South African ultra deep mining conditions. It was found that an appropriate combination of heat stress indices would be required in planning for and ultimately controlling thermal conditions in ultra-deep mining. The depths being contemplated and the concomitant potential heat hazard present too great a risk for reliance on a single environmental component of heat stress, such as wet-bulb temperature at present in common use locally. The study recommends that a heat stress index, preferably Air Cooling Power (ACP), be used to design an ultra deep mine?s ventilation system and that wet-bulb temperature be used to monitor and control the system once it is implemented.

"Bell Creek Mill which has been in continuous operation since 1987 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past three years. The addition of over 2. 5 million tons of resource at over 13 git from Hoyle Pond Mine precipitated an expansion program for the Bell Creek Mill. This paper discusses the major changes that have occurred over the past two years to increase throughput and efficiencies. In addition, the refractory ore treatment options are also discussed.IntroductionThe Bell Creek Mill is located in the Timmins Goldcamp approximately 8km NE of porcupine Ontario. (Fig I.)The mill was originally constructed by Camamax in 1987 to treat the Bell Creek ore at a design throughput of 350tpd. The flowsheet (Fig 2.) consisted of two stage crushing, grinding, thickening, leach and drum filtration with gold recovery by Merrill Crowe.As ore depleted at Bell Creek, the Mill was purchased by Falconbridge to process ore from their Hoyle Pond property. Kinross purchased the Hoyle Pond property and Bell Creek Mill from Falconbridge in 1992.The successful exploration program at Hoyle Pond has led to several expansions and process design changes, with further changes planned over the next twelve months.In 1994, the mine produced 61,865 oz. of gold at an average cost of 197US$ per oz. In 1995 production was 91, 611 oz. at a cost of 187US$ per oz. Projecting the nine months ended September 30, production for 1996 will be 155,000 oz. at a cost of 165US$ per oz.In early 1997, the CIP expansion will be complete, with a target of 175,000 oz. at a cost of 176US$ per oz for 1997. The mill throughput will have increased from 400tpd to 1500tpd between 1994 and 1997.The changes to Bell Creek since 1994 have been numerous with very little of the existing equipment still in operation. The total cost of the expansion to date is 15 million C$. This paper discusses the major projects carried out during in this time. The focus will be to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, some of the initial start-up problems and solutions.Figure 3 shows a plan of the existing mill facility together with the various additions that were carried out."

Increased pressure by government agencies, higher safety standards, new levels of technology and mandatory certification programs, are forcing us to expand our awareness and increase our levels of efficiency. These higher standards require increased awareness. Increased awareness requires better training programs and better supervision with emphasis on production and the employee. This means the desire to improve must be instilled from the top down. this paper will explore the current impediments to this goal and discuss the possible solutions for achieving greater safety awareness, increased production and higher levels of personal achievement. Through the use of audio/visual aids, I will attempt to show the discrepancies as well as the solutions."

The environmental impact of solid waste materials is closely linked to their potential to produce a hazardous leachate once deposited in a landfill. This potential is conventionally assessed with simple laboratory batch leach tests, which find more and more frequent application also in the minerals and metals industry. Such tests are intended to help distinguish between high and low risk wastes, but are completely unsuitable to allow quantitative prediction or modelling of the long-term leachate generation potential. In the present approach the leachate generation process is perceived as a combination of bulk convective transport, stagnant zone and inner particle diffusion, as well as reaction kinetic effects. Model equations are formulated accordingly. A modelling frame work, WASTESIM, has been developed at UCT, which allows flexible combination of the model components and simulation of leach scenarios. Quantitative model parameters are obtained from a systematic laboratory study on the waste material in question. The combined assessment and modelling approach is demonstrated with a study on Cr (VI) leaching from a ferro-chromium slag material. Although not straightforward, the approach is particularly useful in determining long-term liabilities in the context of waste disposal sites with considerably more reliability than has previously been possible. Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

Laboratory and field tests during the past five years indicated considerable variation in the penetrating power of commercially available gun perforators. Many of the guns which achieved inadequate penetration in these tests have since been improved. However, recent productivity tests indicated the possibility of inadequate penetration or, at least, ineffective penetration in some wells. Laboratory experiments under simulated well conditions have demonstrated considerable plugging of the perforations, apparently as a result of factors associated with the shooting process and/or the drilling mud in the well at the time of perforating. The restrictions to flow per unit of hole depth caused by this plugging appears to be greater for jet perforators than for bullet guns of comparable diameter; however, because of the greater depth of penetration obtained with the jet guns, the total flow rates appear to he approximately equal. Limited testing with an experimental shaped charge suggests that less shot hole restriction and greater flow rates may result from larger-diameter perforations or other factors related to charge design. INTRODUCTION Gun perforating has been accepted for a number of years as a routine well completion method which is often preferred since it permits more selective operation of producing zones. Nevertheless, questions have continued to arise as to the effectiveness of the communication paths established between the productive formation and the interior of the casing. The basis for these questions has generally been failure to obtain anticipated fluid production rates through gun perforated completions in specific wells. These low productivities, together with the frequent recovery of bullets from well bores, were considered strong evidence of inadequate penetration. Laboratory investigations of the penetration performance of many of the bullet guns available as late as 1948 gave support to these indications. Subsequent electrical analog studiesl,2,3 indicated that the depth of penetration required to provide productivities equivalent to open hole was beyond the capacity of most bullet perforators evaluated in the early laboratory penetration tests. These results, together with the advent of the shaped charge in the field of oil well perforating, stimulated the interest of both oil operators and service companies in gun development. Improvements in gun design resulted in jet and bullet guns which appeared to be capable of providing sufficient penetration for most perforating jobs. However, some wells failed to yield satisfactory fluid production even after being perforated with the more powerful guns, again raising the question as to the effectiveness of the perforating operation. This fact, together with preliminary shooting into targets prepared with formation cores, indicated that factors associated with the perforating process and/or the fluids in the well bore at the time of shooting may reduce effective formation penetration and thereby decrease well productivity. These laboratory and field data prompted another phase in the investigation of the effectiveness of gun perforating: a program to determine the extent and seriousness of perforation plugging under simulated well conditions.

"The Echo Bay Mines silver property is located 875 air miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The mine is on the east shore of Great Bear Lake at Port Radium which is twenty six miles south of the artic circle, in the North West Territories.HISTORYThe area was first surveyed by J. Mackintosh Bell of the Geological Survey of Canada in the early nineteen hundreds. In May 1930, Gilbert LaBine staked claims at Port Radium called ""Cobalt"" and ""Cobalt I"". What he had discovered was an extremely rich vein of pitch-blend. These claims were the birth of mining in this area. The first ore shipment of pitch-blend was hand-picked and flown out of Port Radium in 1931. LaBine's discovery of pitch-blend became of world-wide importance with the outbreak of World War II. In 1939 the splitting of the uranium atom brought this area into world focus. It is generally believed that it was ore from this area that was used in the production of the devastating bombs which were dropped on Japan.It was at Port Radium that the leaching process for uranium extraction was pioneered. The resultant methods have been modified and adopted for use around the world. The mine was originally owned by Eldorado Gold Mines Limited. Echo Bay Mines leased the property in 1964, subsequently purchased it, and have been producing silver and copper every since."

I PROPOSE in this paper to treat of the chimney merely as a heat engine, as one of the devices resorted to in practice for the conversion of heat into mechanical work. For the sake of simplicity and clearness in the discussion, let us consider the subject in its simplest form. Conceive a chamber, heated from without, in free communicatioH at one end with the external atmosphere, and at the other end opening into a vertical chimney. Let the. cross-section of the chamber be so great, relatively to that of the chimney, that we can neglect the actual energy of the air passing through the chamber. We will neglect, also, all passive resistances to the passage of the air. We will assume that the cross-section of the chimney is constant, and that the air in passing through it neither gains nor loses heat. The following symbols will be employed in the discussion : Po = the normal pressure of the atmosphere, which, it is assumed, is the pressure existing at the level of the chamber. Po = 10332.96 kilograms per square meter. P2 = the pressure of the external atmosphere at the top of the chimney. To = the, absolute temperature of melting ice by the centigrade scale. Accurate prediction of gold (or other metal) production from a heap leach operation is essential to the economic vitality of any such operation. However, this is also one of the most challenging issues facing managers of these facilities. Three approaches to modeling gold production from the Valley Leach Facility (VLF) at Anglogold’s Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company are presented. Evolution of these modeling methods has been necessary as ore heights and volumes have increased. The Minataur? Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is a novel route for the production of high-purity gold using solvent extraction. Following the successful demonstration of the process on a pilot-plant scale, a full-scale 24 t/a production plant has been commissioned at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, Free State. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold-refining technology, but may be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. Gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity can be produced from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the solid feed, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper outlines the process, presents selected results of two pilot-plant trials in which 5 kg/d of high-purity gold was produced from silver-refining anode slime and gold-electrowinning cathode sludge, and provides some details of the cost benefits.
