Este estudo foca na análise do comportamento do módulo para cálculo da viscosidade de escórias fundidas do software FactSage 6.4. Foram utilizados dados da literatura e calculada a viscosidade de 972 escórias, no sistema CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO, variando composição dentro da faixa de 2-58% de CaO, 7,4-70% de SiO2, 0-40% de Al2O3 e 0-38% de MgO, e temperatura na faixa de 1050-1750ºC. Foi encontrada uma tendência do software de produzir resultados com valores de viscosidades menores que os encontrados na literatura. O desvio médio entre os valores da literatura e calculados foi de 32,06%, segundo estudos da literatura é considerado adequado para viscosidades de escórias siderúrgicas fundidas.

"Due to the gradual exhaustion of easily extractive gold ores, it is vital to make efficient use of refractory gold ores which hold 30% gold storage of the world. However, the disadvantage of current processing technologies for refractory gold ores consists of severe pollution, low gold extraction ratio, high investment, etc, thus great research interests were attracted during recent years. This article provides an overview of the distribution and categories of the refractory gold ores in the world. The state of art in processing refractory gold ores by pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and biometallurgy techniques and their industrial applications are highlighted. Potential environmental conservative techniques for efficient gold extraction are also reviewed.IntroductionResources of Refractory Gold OresAs easily extractive gold ores are going to be exhausted with the large scale mining nowadays, refractory gold ores are becoming more and more important. This mine is situated at Point Aconi, Cape Breton , Nova Scotia, and is a replacement for the 100-year-old Princess Collie ry. It is a slope mine which is the continuation of a s trip mine operation. There are fives lopes from the surface driven with Dosco Dintheaders - this marks the first time these machines were used in North America. There are four room -and-pillar sections, each equipped with a Lee Norse HH106 continuous miner, a "Top Dog" roof bolter and two Wagner diesel Teletrams. There are also two Eimco 913 diesel LHD's , which are used for clean-up in the mines. This paper describes the mining operations of this 800,000-tpy mine which, in less than a year and a half , has been developed to the stage where four sections are producing coal at the desired rate.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. Though the Peirce Smith (P-S) converter is a traditional type of furnace, continuous improvement in its mechanical and electrical design is still Kumera's approach. Efforts are made particularly on the following aspects: converter head shape for easy fabrication and structural strengthening, oxidation air swivel joint for low pressure drop and low noise level, wind box for even air distribution to tuyeres, drive unit and its control for reliable and handy operation. These improvements have successfully been applied in recent P-S converter deliveries.

O fluxo simétrico e distribuição de temperatura uniforme são de grande importância no processo de Lingotamento Contínuo de Beam Blank, porém a utilização de duas válvulas para alimentação do molde traz dificuldades operacionais relacionadas ao posicionamento das válvulas e controle de vazão. Neste sentido é interessante trabalhar com apenas uma válvula. Neste trabalho técnicas de modelagem física e matemática foram utilizadas para avaliar o fluxo de fluido no molde, comparando-se o caso em que se empregam duas válvulas tubulares, com aquele em que se utiliza apenas uma válvula. Verificou-se que esta última configuração resultou em uma mudança no comportamento do fluxo, aumento na profundidade de impacto, porém a velocidade na região do menisco não teve variação significativa em comparação com a utilização de duas válvulas tubulares.

The European Guideline ETAG 027 - 2008 (?Guideline for European Technical Approval of Falling Rock Protection Kits?) defines the procedures to test rock fall barriers. Nowadays, this guideline is essentially the only test and construction framework utilized by manufacturers and it is also starting to enter in the mentality of designer who can clearly specify the performances of rockfall barriers. ETAG 27 (and the related European Technical Approval and the CE marking) represents a milestone for the rockfall barrier market, because it gives the possibility to compare the performances of different fences and it ensures the quality of the certified product. For these reasons ETAG 27 presently constitutes the base for tenders all around the world. Although rockfall barriers are in common use, designers and consultants do not have a clear overview of the real performances and the technological limits of these structures. The first problem can be solved using ETAG 27 criteria, which allow designing rockfall barriers at ultimate and serviceability limit state. Even though ETAG 27 uses crash tests performed with the Service Energy Level (SEL) and Maximum Energy Level (MEL), design with these concepts is not obvious or in common acceptance. Some preliminary questions must be solved. When can these energy levels be correctly applied? In the case of rockfall simulations, what probabilistic approach must be used for the evaluation of the barrier? Unfortunately ETAG 27 does not give any information or tests relating to the technological limits of the fences. Therefore some important questions arise. How do the site specific aspects of installation affect the barrier performance? What is the behaviour of the barriers under extreme conditions? And finally, the main question lies in the background: what is the functional reliability of ETAG 27? All of the above questions require comprehensive answers, which is consistent with the experience of designers, installers and producers. The modern Russian iron ore mining industry is faced with multiple challenges from everincreasing requirements of steel-making, the value of iron ore concentrates, depletion of high-grade ore reserves and complications of the mining and geologic environment’s necessity to process low-grade ores with complex material composition and low valuable mineral content; with finely disseminated aggregates of metal and non-metal minerals responding similarly to processing. The upgrade of the existing operations’ fine wet screening was implemented by Metalloinvest; as well as the design of a process flowsheet for concentration oxide ferruginous quartzites with low concentrating ability. The scientific basis for improvement of low grade ore concentrating efficiency and the upgrade of market product quality is supported by an in-depth study of ore characteristics, application of high performance equipment for separation of fine-grained mineral aggregates and use of depressor selective to ferruginous minerals in the flotation process. The benefits of wet fine screening have been proven by industrial scale tests; as well as the feasibility of significant upgrades in product quality which have been confirmed as a result of the tests. A road-map for the upgrade of an existing process for the concentration of unoxidised ferruginous quartzites deposited in the Mikhailovskoye ore field was developed, based on the industrial scale test of a fine screening process. With reference to the ability for concentration, three major ore types oxidised ferruginous quartzites were defined as a result of comprehensive geological mapping and process sampling: oxidised ferruginous quartzites with good concentrating ability: over Fe67% grade of concentrate with ca. 80% iron recovery; oxidised ferruginous quartzites with moderate concentrating ability: Fe65-67% grade of concentrate with 70-72% iron recovery oxidised ferruginous quartzites with low concentrating ability: below Fe60% grade of concentrate (cannot be processed into desired grade market product). A process flow diagram combining magnetic separation and flotation has been designed and recommended for implementation based on the in-depth research of defined Mikhailovskoye deposit iron oxide types, including grain size, chemistry, petrographic, mineralogy, hematite and magnetite grain size distribution and liberation analysis.

Dimensional stone processing has become an important part of the world extractive industry, and today?s total stone block yearly production is estimated to be around 134.000.000 tons and is still growing by an average yearly rate of approximately 20%. In future, the same production will become an important part of the mining industry and presently, in some countries it represents even the main mining output. New environmental regulations, together with landscape and nature conservation requirements, create a number of difficulties in setting up new open pit dimensional stone quarries. As a result, many dimensional stone producers have recently started to apply underground techniques in order to produce the ornamental stone blocks intended for further processing. Underground production of stone blocks requires special mining methods and so far it has not been a cost-effective excavation method for all types of rocks. Presently, this type of stone excavation is generally applied in sedimentary and marble deposits because the rock has small to no mineral quartz content. When starting a new underground dimensional stone mine, it is necessary to analyse the impact of all primary factors which are crucial to set up a technically and cost effective advanced underground dimensional stone mine. The role of physical and mechanical properties of the rock, geological conditions, mineralogical composition, micro-tectonic state of the site, rock mechanic conditions on the site, durability and saw ability of the stone are decisive factors in foreseeing the future methods of extraction. The laboratory research work as well as the field work, is very important in decision-making aimed to choose the future excavation method. Also of equal importance is the serious market research, because it renders the indication of selling price potential. Having obtained the results from both types of research, mining engineers can design the mining methods which optimize financial return to the mine. The practice approved by 15 years of testing in the underground limestone quarry of Kanfanar gives future producers very useful advice and general data to facilitate the process of exploration intended to establish new similar underground quarries.

Bureau of Mines exploration at the property of the Tulare County Tungsten Mines was by core drilling from the surface from May 16, 1950, to July 13, 1950. The property is in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range, 18 miles northeast of Lindsay, Calif. It has been in almost continuous production since 1942 and has produced 40,831 units of tungsten trioxide (W03) with a grade of approximately 67 percent. The work performed comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, sampling the outcrops, and diamond drilling the area adjacent to the mine workings. Ten holes were drilled for a total of 1,824 feet. Ore reserves were found to be confined to tactite zones in a surface area approximately 250 by 400 feet and extending downward about 350 feet.

Widespread high-calcium limestones in New Mexico region are low -in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds deleterious for sulfur removal usage. Thick limestones in Mississippian Escabrosa, Lake Valley, and Leadville, Pennsylvanian Madera and Hermosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, Permian Hueco and Capitan, Cretaceous U-Bar, and some Cenozoic travertines are high-calcium units. Significant outcrops are in mountains of southwestern, south-central, central, southeastern and north-central New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern Chihuahua. Coal-fired powerplants are mainly in northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona, thus transport is mainly by railroad.

The phase is a hard and extremely brittle material with a tetragonal crystal structure, containing 30 atoms per unit cell' It occurs in many binary and ternary alloys of the transition elements. The existence of twelve a phases has been reported in binary alloys of metals from the group vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten with metals from the group manganese, iron, cobalt, and nickel. It is a characteristic fact that the composition of the o- phases in the various binary systems is not the same. Rather, there is a gradual shift in composition, for instance in the series of chromium a phases, approximately as follows: CrMn,, FeCr, Cr3Co,. In recent years several ideas have been put forward to account for this variability of composition. SullyZ proposed that a was a type of electron compound, characterized by 1.7 electrons per atom in excess of the number required to fill the Pauling atomic orbitals. These excess electrons were supposed to just fill the first Brillouin zone of the u structure. However, later work indicated that the phase is ferromagnetic at low temperatures, so that a- is unlikely to be a full zone compound.~ Another proposal,* which is also based on the structure of the transition elements advanced by Pauling, and in fact leads to essentially the same a compositions as Sully's theory, suggests that the u phase is characterized by a constant number of electron vacancies per atom. The electron vacancy numbers N,. used were originally the same as those in the Pauling theory, but were later modified empirically vn order to bring about better agreement with data for the p phase in certain ternary systems. For alloys, N,, was calculated on the assumption of simple additivity from the electron vacancy numbers of the components, as follows: N,. = 4.66 (Mo + Cr + V) + 3.2 (Mn) + 2.2 (Fe) + 1.71 (Co) + 1.6 (Ni). On this basis a reasonably constant value of N, = 3.4 was obtained for all of the binary u phases and a fairly constant value of N,, = 3.1 for the various p phases. More recently, Bloom and Granta pointed out that a similar correlation with the total number of 3d and 4s electrons per atom is also fairly well fulfilled and concluded that no reference need be made to the Pauling theory. This proposal does not lead to the same binary a compositions as the one described above, so that the relative merits of the two proposals may be determined on the basis of direct comparison with experimental composition data. The purpose of the present paper is to provide such a comparison. Since the experimental data for the composition ranges of several of the known u phases were rather incomplete, it was decided to carry out new experimental determinations for many of the binary systems. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared by induction melting in recrystallized alumina crucibles, either in vacuum or in helium atmospheres. Some aluminum was picked up from the crucibles in the alloys of high vanadium content, but this was minimized by keeping the alloys in the molten state for as short a time as possible. The maximum aluminum impurity was 0.13 wt pct by chemical analysis, in an alloy containing over 50 wt pct V. In general, the as-melted compositions agreed accurately with those obtained by chemical analysis. In the case of manganese, however, losses inevitably occurred; consequently all manganese alloys were analyzed. Specimens of all alloys were annealed at temperatures ranging from 1000" to 1300°C in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct helium and 8 pct hydrogen mixture. All manganese alloys were sealed in quartz tubes under vacuum before annealing. The specimens were held at temperature for between four and eight days before being quenched into cold water. Alloys were prepared for microscopic examination by mechanical polishing, usually followed by electrolytic etching. X-ray diffraction specimens were prepared by crushing the homogenized alloys, and by reanneal-ing the obtained powders in evacuated quartz tubes for a few hours at the temperature of the lump anneal. The electrokinetic properties of MgO have been utilized to simultaneously filter suspended solids and remove trace amounts of dissolved heavy metals from synthetic mine water. Greater than 95 pct removal of metals from influent at neutral pH containing 1 to 6 mg/L of dissolved Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn can be routinely achieved by filtering through a granular bed of MgO at flow rates typical of rapid sand filtration (0.3 cm/s). Filtrate concentrations of most metals can be maintained below 0.1 mg/L for 160 bed volumes or more loading. The more mobile metals (those with larger solubility products) are more difficult to remove, and are strongly bonded to the MgO granules so that chemical stripping with chelating agent is required to clean the bed. Less mobile ions are easily removed by the filter and are effectively stripped by conventional filter backwashing. The fraction of metals recovered by chemically stripping the loaded MgO filters correlates to the zero points of charge of the metals. This process may be applicable to removal and recovery of trace amounts of heavy metals in mine drainage that is partly neutralized by liming. Also, since many of these metals are critical and strategic, the technique can be adapted not only to recycle process water from mineral and milling waste streams, but also to reclaim their metal values.

The safe and efficient driving of the roadway along the gob is becoming an increasing challenge due to the influence of the integrity and bearing capacity of the side coal and rock mass in the gob under the roof cutting mining mode. The mechanism of protection of the gob-side roadway is shown by modeling the influence of roof cutting and the application of a destress technique on the lateral coal and rock mass zones. The distribution characteristics of stress, displacement, and fracture in the overburden are analyzed by numerical simulation method under the three working conditions. The results indicate (1) construction of row holes and blasting can form artificial structure’s fracture plane above the roadway, which can effectively cut the connection of overburden. The artificial structure’s fracture plane decreases the peak value of the lateral coal body’s support pressure. The peak point and the critical location of the stress reduction area are both transferred to the deep part at the same time, providing adequate space for the gob-side roadway. (2) The stress arch foot in the lateral rock mass rises to the rock layer at the bottom of the roof cutting plane after top cutting, as does the high-pressure area of deviator stress. The fracture plane prevents lateral coal and rock mass instability and limits the negative effects of roof deformation above the gob-side roadway. (3) The triangle slip fracture zone moves to over the roof cutting drilling zone due to the fracture plane, showing a high position compared to its original zone.

"In order to effectively predict the roof collapse of underground openings using continuum models, it is imperative that a realistic failure criterion is used to represent the rock mass. However, for coal mining operations, there is still uncertainty as to the appropriate failure criterion that should be used for the coal measure strata. This study compares stability numbers and collapse mechanisms for a rectangular underground opening predicted based on three commonly used failure criteria: the standard Mohr-Coulomb, Mohr-Coulomb with a tension cut-off and Hoek-Brown. Three methods of analysis are considered: an analytical upper bound method an upper and lower bound finite element formulation the displacement finite element method.The theoretical results are also compared with field measurements of subsidence above longwall coal mining. For the standard Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, the friction angle governs the shape of the collapse mechanism, and the so-called critical width (the cavity width above which failures extend to the ground surface) ascertained from field observations in the New South Wales coalfields corresponds to a friction angle of approximately 30°. On the other hand, predictions obtained based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion consistently overestimate the critical width. The results also show that tensile failure governs the stability of the cavity and shape of the collapse mechanism when a tension cut-off is introduced for the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion.CITATION:Suchowerska, A M, Hambleton, J P and Carter, J P, 2014. The Gateway program will provide additional rail capacity between New Jersey and Manhattan. This paper describes how a 70-foot-deep section of cut and cover tunnel was designed to directly support future high-rise towers. The tunnel will link previously completed tunnel sections under Hudson Yards to future tunnels under the Hudson River. The design aims to minimize constraints on future overbuild and future tunnels, while maximizing constructability within a small worksite. The tunnel will pass under the High Line elevated walkway, next to an active rail yard, and close to a subway tunnel. The design was developed by a tri-venture of WSP, STV and AECOM. WSP led the design of major underground works; STV designed utility relocations and the underpinning concept for the High Line; and AECOM designed temporary in-tunnel systems. Construction is expected to start in 2023.

The ballistic pendulum is a well-established piece of test equipment originally developed for estimating the velocity of bullets and projectiles. When trying to understand the effects of different tamping methods on explosive performance, the ballistic pendulum is an excellent tool allowing calculation of explosive charge impulse. Most ballistic pendula for this application are limited to narrow impulse ranges as the pendulum mass determines the angle of swing; and a mass capable of being moved by a small charge would be far too small for a larger charge. This paper describes a modular design (the Alford Modular Ballistic Pendulum) which overcomes this problem.

Low extractions (<80%) in cyanide leaching impose the application of physical and chemical pre-treatment methods (e.g., ultra-fine grinding, roasting, alkaline leaching) prior to cyanide leaching to achieve acceptable recoveries. The effectiveness of the selected pre-treatment method is linked intimately with inherent mineralogical properties of ore. In this study, a refractory silver ore assaying 145 g/t Ag was subjected to various pretreatment tests in an attempt to eliminate its refractoriness. Direct cyanidation of the ground ore (d80: 65 µm) produced a low silver extraction of only 29.5% over 24 h indicating its high refractoriness. Previous studies have shown that silver occurs mainly as Sb/As containing sulfide minerals such as pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) and proustite (Ag3AsS3), which do not respond well to cyanide leaching. Also, silver-containing minerals are closely associated with and/or encapsulated in other mineral phases that can restrict the contact of cyanide with silver. Therefore, alkaline leaching (using 3 M of Na2S, NaOH or KOH solution) and ultra-fine grinding as pre-treatment methods were tested to improve the extraction of silver. All the alkaline leaching tests were carried out for 3 h at800C. Neither NaOH nor KOH leaching produced the desired effect on the extraction of silver (i.e., ~30%). Even, a sharp decrease in the extraction of silver (i.e., 10%) was observed in Na2S leaching. On the other hand, ultra-fine grinding (UFG) (d80: 3 µm) substantially improved the extraction of silver in cyanide leaching (95% Ag at 24 h after UFG). It can be inferred from these findings that the refractoriness of the ore is essentially physical in character (i.e. the encapsulation of silver presumably in non-sulphide minerals such as barite and quartz).

Among all the reported technologies, biotechnologies in mineral processing – specifically bioleaching and microbially induced flotation – have emerged to be considered as low-cost, environmentally friendly potential alternatives to many of the current mineral processing techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the use of microorganisms for iron ore beneficiation and, further, discusses the applicability of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.IntroductionIncreasing global demand for raw materials has led to diminishing resources of high-grade iron ore. As a result, the mining and utilization of low-grade hematite, limonite, specularite, siderite and goethite ores have attracted more and more attention. However, these types of iron ores are of complex paragenesis and fine disseminated grain size, and often contaminated by phosphorus in the form of solid solution. The distribution of phosphorus throughout the iron mineral crystals prevents the effective use of physical separation techniques, and these complex ores are at present largely untapped due to a lack of cost-effective and efficient processing methods. Chemical leaching and roasting-magnetic separation approaches have been mainly tested only on the laboratory scale and are all either cost prohibitive or ineffective when used on low-grade complex iron ores."

"Advanced data acquisition and process modelling technology provides online data and decision support about different aspects of the resource extraction process. Real-time approaches have recently been applied to utilize the value of this information for improved production control in mineral resource extraction in different operational set ups including coal, polymetallic ore and gold deposits. The key concept of these approaches promotes the change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online material characteristics data acquired during extraction at the mining face, during material handling and processing with a sequentially up-datable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimization of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control. The contribution reviews recent developments in the three main constituents sensor based material characterisation, rapid updating of grade control models and simulation based optimization for improved production control. Technological readiness is assessed and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The value added is illustrated by means of selected case studies. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of known and established mineral reserves, the decrease in head grades and the continuing demand of mineral raw materials by the modern society, future exploitation will move towards extraction of deposits under geologically more complex conditions. Complex deposits are characterized by a low continuity in grade, presence of deleterious elements such as arsenic and high irregularity in the geometry of the ore boundaries. The profitable exploitation of such deposits becomes significantly more challenging. To be able to better utilize such unconventional mineral resources of the future, smart autonomous mining systems are needed, which integrate local exploration of spatially varying material characteristics in–situ and have the ability to follow and extract the pay zones in the ore body while minimizing dilution (Buxton and Benndorf, 2013).
