"INTRODUCTION An inherent aspect of any tunnelling project is ground risk: how it is identified, quantified and managed throughout the various stages of a project. Early identification of these risks, such as adverse ground conditions or potential obstructions is crucial; however specific identification of all risks will inevitably be limited by the extent of the desk study, ground investigation and accuracy of as-built information available, particularly in a densely populated urban environment such as London with a long and varied history of development. It is therefore crucial to have suitable plans and procedures in place for dealing with potential ground risk scenarios if they occur during construction work to ensure the safety of the workforce and to protect nearby critical assets. A number of experiences of potential ground risk were encountered during the Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) works on Crossrail contract C300/410 which was constructed by a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK). The C300/410 works, undertaken in the heart of London, comprised of over 2.5km of SCL tunnels for Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road Stations and the Fisher Street crossover, as well as two 6.2km TBM tunnel drives between Royal Oak and Farringdon. BFK appointed Donaldson Associates as their SCL designers for the works; together they were responsible for excavation stability up to the point of ring closure. Despite the majority of SCL tunnelling works at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road being through the favourable medium of London clay, there remained areas of local geotechnical challenges. Some of these were expected from the outset, some became apparent as works progressed from records of other nearby excavation works, and some were only encountered during tunnel excavation. Being located in the centre of London meant that there always remained a possibility of meeting some form of obstruction from previous structures. However, identification of all potential issues prior to the commencement of the works was challenging and proved to not be entirely possible. Through a series of case studies, this paper documents incidents where obstructions or adverse ground conditions arose. These scenarios all had the potential to cause safety risks, impact the tunnel design and/or construction methods and ultimately add time and cost to the works. The paper discusses how these challenges were overcome which utilised in part, a progressive risk reduction cycle, feeding back knowledge gained at all stages of construction into the approach for undertaking the works. It also examines what could be done in future to further reduce the ground risk through early identification, communication, education and appropriate contingency measures."

Além da redução potencial do risco, espera-se gerar um ganho de produtividade das áreas responsáveis pela solicitação e liberação da suspensão de placas. Através da automatização destas liberações e das suspensões, espera-se aumentar a disponibilidade de estoque diária para programação de chances de laminação e evitar intervenções manuais de maneira padronizada. Este modelo será utilizado nas etapas de criação de placa e aproveitamento de placas no pedido. Além disso, o modelo será rodado automaticamente todos os dias visando avaliar todo o estoque.

"Madawaska Mines produces a uranium precipitate (83-85% u3o8) using a magnesium oxide slurry to precipitate the uranium from solution. The solution, at approximately 9""0 g/l u3o8 is neutralized to a pH of 7.0. At the Eldorado Nuclear Refinery in Port Hope, the precipitate is not acceptable as a single feed to the refinery process. It was discovered that a 2% silica impurity caused emulsion problems in the solvent extraction column.After extensive studies of possible solutions, such as two-stage precipitation and solvent extraction, an acceptable solution was found. The selective precipitation of uranium at a pH of 3.5-4.0 using Hydrogen Peroxide produces an almost silica free product of higher purity (90-93% u3o8) to that of straight magnesium oxide precipitation. Introduction Madawaska Mines Limited is located four miles southwest of Bancroft, Ontario. The annual production of u3o8 is approximately 610,000 pounds. To produce the final product or yellowcake, nine separate steps are required. These are (1) grinding, (2) dewatering, (3) leaching, (4) acid filtration, (5) clarification, (6) ion exchange, (7) precipitation, (8) washing, and (9) drying and packaging. To illustrate these steps, a complete flowsheet of the mill is displayed on page three.The yellowcake is sent to Eldorado Nuclear Limited in Port Hope, Ontario for further concentrating and refining. As part of their routine specification check, a test called the amenability test is performed. This test indicates how a particular dissolved yellowcake product reacts to solvent extraction. The Madawaska yellowcake did not pass the test."

THe elements silver, cadmium, tin, antimony and tellurium either are found as impurities in commercial coppers or are intentionally added to produce coppers for special uses. When present in small quantities, each of these metals exerts a significant effect on the properties of copper, but despite considerable experience and investigation much remains to be learned about their specific behavior. The presence of extraneous elements, particularly oxygen, complicates the study of individual additions of impurities in the range o to 0.05 per cent, and the use of high-purity copper has been found extremely helpful in circumventing these difficulties. It has also been found that individual behavior can be satisfactorilv determined from measurements of two commercially important properties, conductivity and softening temperature, according to methods that have been described previously.1,2 Data of this type, obtained in the course of a general investigation of the effects of impurities on the properties of both oxygen-bearing 2nd oxygen-free copper are presented herewith. All samples except those containing cadmium were prepared as 3/8-in. continuously cast oxygen-free rod from pure copper and weighed amounts of a similarly synthesized master alloy. Composition was checked by chemical methods, which in every case verified the calculated analyses. Test wires were cold-drawn one B, and S. number per pass on a string-up machine using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in. and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Some oxygen-bearing samples were produced directly from the 3/8-in. oxygen-free rods by diffusion from a surface scale at 850°C. and drawn to size as listed above, but most of the alloys were remelted in pure graphite and cast through air into a I-in. round mold. The slugs were then hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed as listed above, and drawn to 0.081 inch. Conductivity wires were annealed for I hr. at 100°C. intervals between 300' and 800°F., using a hydrogen atmosphere for oxygen-free samples and purified nitrogen for the oxygen-bearing type. All samples were quenched from the annealing temperature in 10 per cent H²S04 and conductivity was measured on a Hoopes bridge that had been checked against a Kelvin bridge. The softening temperatures represent the half-hard stage of the annealing curve as determined by a standard procedure.' Weather changes of a daily, weekly, or seasonal period affect mineral production and cause significant losses that are considered unavoidable. Private weather forecasting services are available on a contract basis that can significantly reduce the uncertainty associated with weather-induced changes in the production of and demand for minerals. This paper provides examples of current practice and reviews the opportunities that await those producers who incorporate weather services as an integral part of their operating, scheduling, and planning procedures. Private weather forecasts can be highly accurate because atmospheric trends such as conditions and movement tend to persist and are related to previous meteorological events. Commercial meteorological services are prepared to deal specifically with a mineral producer's special problems (Table 1). Tactical use of private forecasts is a major advance over the severely restricted value of public forecasts which, of necessity, are general in nature and cover a dispersed geographic territory. Private weather services provided on a consulting fee basis offer the mineral producer the opportunity for tactical and strategic response to weather conditions at an acceptable cost. This contrasts with the too-frequent current tendency to view weather as a random variable the costs of which are unknown and about which nothing can be done.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo de matérias-primas utilizadas nas indústrias de cerâmica vermelha da Região do Cariri-Ce, de forma a adequar o processamento às especificações de composição, umidade e temperatura para obtenção de componentes com qualidade e características satisfatórias. Para tal, foi realizada a análise de composição através de FRX, limites de Atterberg, retração linear, absorção de água e tensão de ruptura à flexão, pós queima, em três temperaturas distintas. Pode-se observar que algumas argilas apresentaram composições típicas das utilizadas para a fabricação de produtos da cerâmica vermelha, aumento de tensão de ruptura e retração com a temperatura de queima, redução da absorção com o aumento da temperatura de queima e a penas as amostras AM e BP encontraram-se no intervalo de extrusão satisfatória.

En este sentido, el texto señala el uso de SDT(software) como aplicación informática decuada para el cálculo de sostenimiento en túneles y galerías mineras que suministra una respuesta a las necesidades de proyectistas e ingenieros mineros. Dicho software se basa en cerchas metálicas con capacidad de deslizamiento (perfiles THN), cerchas de perfil HEB, pernos de anclaje y hormigón proyectado en túneles y galerías mineras que utiliza el método “Convergencia – Confinamiento”, procedimiento de referencia en el cálculo y diseño de sostenimiento en excavaciones subterráneas, con las premisas de sección circular, presión sobre el sostenimiento uniforme y el campo de presiones hidrostático.

The Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month's production arc as follows: Fe²zO³ SiO² Al²O³ CaCO³ MgCO³ Lump, percent............................. 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, per cent,................ 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 755 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Fine crushed and washed stone, 1% to 0.063 in., is calcined at the lime-burning plant and used for lime charges at the Ensley open hearths. Geology The district's deposits of hematite ore occur in the Clinton formation, and the limestone beds mined are stratigraphically 330 ft. above the ore beds worked. A cross section on the center line of the mine is shown in Fig. 1. This limestone formation, 130 ft. thick, is in the Warsaw horizon of the Lower Mississippian. It lies above 100 ft. of Fort Payne chert, which is immediately above the Clinton formation, and is composcd of layers of chert and cherty limestone, approximately 50 per cent of the material being pure chert. The chert is extremely hard, and the cost of driving raises through it is very high. Both iron ore and limestone deposits lie on the southwest limb of the Jones Valley anticline, the formations dipping from 15' to 32' to the southeast. Joint ventures exist as a means of sharing risks and obeying regulations. An unincorporated joint venture allows a company to take a share only of a project yet allows that company to treat such share as though it were an integral part of the company. The nature of the risks inherent in many ventures is described and comparisons made with alternative corporate vehicles. Different procedures for managing joint ventures are also reviewed and the types of problem encountered in establishing and operating joint ventures are discussed. The basic characteristics of successful joint ventures, in Australia, are listed and a conclusion reached that, despite its difficulties, the joint venture will continue to proliferate as a corporate vehicle for project development.

"Particulate Copper Silicon carbide (Cu-SiCp) composites find application as wear and heat resistant materials in electrical sliding contacts such as in homopolar machines, railway overhead current collector systems where high electrical/thermal conductivity combined with good wear properties is required. However, challenges occur during machining due to the presence of hard reinforcement in the matrix. This may lead to high turnover of tool wear and poor surface finish. The adoption of near-net shape technology to produce such hard-to-machine metal matrix composites and subsequent finish machining with its attendant cost has reported limited success. This paper critically appraises the challenges and opportunities in the improvement of tribological characteristics of particulate Cu-SiC composites and identifies low cost reinforcement material that could be used to improve its tribological characteristics.IntroductionTribology consideration is increasingly becoming a decisive factor in the design and selection of materials for applications involving interacting surfaces in relative motion. The consideration is mainly on the combined effects of friction and lubrication on material's wear integrity and performance amongst other. Annual losses due to tribology in the US industries are estimated at between 1-2% of the Gross National Income [1], in Russia it is about 1-4% of the GDP [2]. Thus, the attributes of tribology has become imperative in modem machinery especially those applications involving sliding and rolling surfaces, and electrical contacts [3- 8].These are readily found in homopolar machines, internal combustion engines, aircraft engines, gears, cams, seals and railway overhead current collector systems [9-12]. In these systems, the dissipation of frictional heat arising from the interacting surfaces as quickly as possible imposes constraints on the choice of materials for such application to prevent softening, plastic and shear flow and the transfer of metal as wear debris onto the interacting surfaces. If these possibilities occur, system performance is compromised and premature failure may result. Materials for these systems are expected to possess high electrical and thermal conductivities, low coefficient of thermal expansion, good corrosion resistance and high melting point [3-8, 13]."

YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT) is part of Sound Transit’s $3.7 billion, 14-mile light rail transit system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington, to the cities of Mercer Island, Bellevue, and Redmond. The tunnel was the first Sound Transit East Link project and posed significant construction risk. This paper discusses implementation of design changes to the soft ground tunneling method, implementation of several technologies such as the use macro-synthetic fiber initial shotcrete lining, use of spray-applied waterproofing, and use of shotcrete for the final tunnel lining. These efforts allowed for significant time and cost savings to the project.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. In the article results of experiments over jaws? linings in jaw crushers with different shaping of working surface were presented. Following sets of jaws were under investigation: immobile plain jaw and moving jaw with grooving surface. Grooving jaws have groves with circular, triangular and trapezoid cross section. In order to evaluate efficiency of comminution both the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains were determined, as well as the size of crushing forces and process efficiency were measured. For the combination: plain jaw with grooved one, a good results were obtained as regards the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains. Crushing forces were higher at crushing with mixed types of jaws (the one plain, the second grooved), in comparison to crushing with using both grooved jaws. Efficiency of the process was definitely higher for mixed jaws.

As part of the expansion of the Kidd Creek Mine to 2,682 meters (8800 feet) below surface, two largediameter 3000kW (4000HP) booster fans were installed at the 6000 level. Shortly after commissioning the fans, significant damage to the fan bearings were observed, forcing several shutdowns for repairs, which were very disruptive to the mine’s production process.

The Selwyn Gold-Copper Mine is located 150 km southeast of Mount Isa within Proterozoic units of the Mount Isa inlier (Figure 1). Mineralization in the mine area is associated with strongly sheared ironstones and iron rich schists at the base of the mid- Proterozoic Staveley Formation. The ironstone horizons outcrop as a series of dominant ridges over a 10 km strike. Economic gold-copper mineralization has been defined in 4 separate zones within a 3.5 km length of the outcropping ridges. A current combined geological resource for the deposits is 5.3 million tonnes of 5.0 g/t Au and 2.02 Cu. Weathering of the deposits has resulted in a pronounced vertical zonation of mineralogy, especially copper, within the ore zones. This has produced 3 separate ore types which require different treatment techniques. The categorization is based on copper content and zones are termed leached (surface), oxide and sulfide. Ore removed from the pits will be mainly leached and oxidized with minor sulfide near the pits final depths, while the underground ore will be from the sulfide zone with minor oxide in some areas.

On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and. investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite.4/ Appropriations were made in July 19 7, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typical subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series of tests in the standard. Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncoking coal was the first one of its rank that had been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall temperatures ranging from 500°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products are collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties are then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal. During the last 10 years approximately 50 representative American coals have been tested in the Bureau of Mines equipment. The results on the first 30 coals and a complete description of the test procedure are contained in a joint publication of the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association.7/ The remaining twenty coals have been reported in Bureau of Mines reports as Technical Papers and Bulletins.
