Aços microligados ao nióbio possuem grande aplicação na indústria automotiva, muitas vezes como itens de segurança. Estes aços possuem certa tendência à geração de trincas transversais de superfície em placas produzidas via lingotamento contínuo, principalmente se as variáveis de processo durante a solidificação não forem adequadas. Experimentalmente, verificou-se que a ocorrência de trincas estava associada à composição química e às variáveis de processo. Com base nestas observações, avaliações da literatura e simulações com software Thermocalc ®, foram propostas alterações de composição química e ajuste na curva de oscilação, sendo este último considerado fator principal para a obtenção de placas isentas de trincas.

Devido ao fato que a exigência por menores teores de enxofre em alguns tipos de aços, torna-se interessante investigar a eficiência na dessulfuração dos materiais já conhecidos com matérias primas alternativas. Duas dessas novas matérias primas que podem ser utilizadas no processo de dessulfuração são o resíduo de mármore e a sodalita. Desta forma, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a eficiência de dessulfuração em ferro-gusa por misturas contendo resíduo de mármore, sodalita e agentes dessulfurantes convencionalmente utilizados. Os testes foram realizados a 1400°C, em uma atmosfera inerte (Ar) com agitação constante. Os testes experimentais mostraram que 50 a 90% da dessulfuração ocorreu em até 15 minutos. As misturas contendo fluorita foram os que apresentaram maior eficiência de dessulfuração. A adição de sodalita ocasionou uma queda na eficiência de dessulfuração.

O objetivo desse trabalho é identificar a eficiência térmica do glendon de uma empresa do setor siderúrgico mineiro. Tendo em vista que quanto mais eficiente for o equipamento, maior é o aproveitamento da energia fornecida e também menor é o consumo de carvão vegetal no alto-forno, reduzindo o OPEX. Este trabalho foi um estudo de caso baseado na análise de diferentes referências bibliográficas e através de estudos prévios e dados reais. O glendon em estudo apresentou eficiência térmica de 53,1%. Estudos mais recentes apresentaram eficiência de 67,4% utilizando chicanas no interior do glendon alterando o fluxo gasoso. O combustível do glendon é o gás do topo do alto-forno recuperado. A energia proveniente da combustão representa 89% da entrada de energia no regenerador, o que mostra quão importante é uma queima estável do GAF no glendon. Observou-se um desperdício de 45,5% da energia de combustão que saem pelos gases na chaminé, sendo uma oportunidade futura de estudo para reaproveitamento dessa energia

Foi implantado um software, PCT (Production Control Tool), de integração e coordenação do fluxo de dados entre os seguintes níveis de automação: nível 3, onde se encontram os dados de especificação do produto e sequenciamento de produção, e nível 2, onde se encontram os modelos matemáticos, resultados do processo, interface com medidores e rastreamento da produção. No processo de construção do PCT viu-se um grande potencial de desenvolver outras funcionalidades, devido enorme flexibilidade dessa ferramenta, como gerenciamento da produção, auxílio na inspeção de qualidade e controle estatístico do processo. Isto levou a criação de um sistema amigável de fácil utilização, utilizado tanto pelos operadores da Linha e inspetores de qualidade como também pelos analistas do processo, auxiliando na otimização da Linha de Tiras a Quente da Gerdau.

THE MAGNITUDE of the drainage problem of the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania's Western Middle field is realized when it is known that in 1951 nine pumping plants in this field pumped nearly 36 billion gallons of water to the surface. This is almost 68,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of 350 feet for that year alone. In 1948 over 20,000 gallons per minute was pumped by relay pumps against an average hydrostatic head of 265 feet. In addition to the water pumped to the surface, it is estimated that 15,000 gallons per minute overflows to the surface from underground pools in idle mines. The volume (second-feet) of water pumped and overflow water is almost 1;z times the, average mean flow of the Schuylkill River at Pottsville for the 8-year period 1944--51 (7, 13).4 Mahanov and Shamokin Creeks drain an area of 99 square miles in the Western Middle field, and all surface drainage in this area must traverse some part, of the coal measures before entering these streams. On the basis of 46.03 inches of rainfall (the weighted average of 6 recording stations for 1948), the runoff from the drainage area during that period was 51 billion gallons, approximately 1 times the volume of water pumped by all mine-pumping plants in the Western Middle field. In other words, because of the pervious strata overlying the mine workings, approximately two-thirds of the total runoff in the drainage, area becomes mine water tributary to the pumping plants.

[This paper is one of series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes the mine of the Hanover Bessemer Iron & Copper Co. at Fierro, Grant County, N. M., which is the only operating iron mine in the southwestern part of the United States. This mine is in a district noted for the great variety of ores that it produces. Within a small area, as shown is Figure 1, there are noteworthy deposits of nearly all the common metals. The ore occurs in lenticular masses dipping at about 50°. An underhand stoping method has been developed that requires but a very small amount of handling of ore. As the ore is very irregular in iron content and also in the distribution of the impurities--chiefly sulphur, silica, and magnesia--a method has to be used that will permit selective mining and will also allow ore and waste to be taken out separately as conditions change. A magnetic cobbing plant raises the grade of the ore shipped about 10 per cent.]

"In all electrical beneficiation methods, the difference in electro-physical properties of the contributed mineral particles, essentially frictional charge, electrical conductivity and dielectric constant properties are exploited to achieve separation. The composition of the raw material determines what kind of either corona charging, conductive induction, or triboelectric separation method should be employed. The process is versatile and is influenced by different parameters related to mineral characteristics, surrounding ambient conditions and electrical and mechanical attributions of the separating device. Electrical separation is surface based beneficiation method which is mainly affected by the surface and surface changes of the minerals. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the electrophysical properties of the minerals can be changed/modified. During electrical/electrostatic separation process, both charge magnitude and its polarity that developed on the particles and therefore, their electrical beneficiation potential is essentially defined by surface phenomena. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the main electro-physical parameters can be changed/modified with applied surface treatment/pretreatment methods to promote separation. Surface treatment of minerals is carried out by different means, including chemical conditioning, irradiation, thermal treatment, etc. This paper discusses and analyze the electrical separation process, electrophysical properties of the minerals with special focus on the effect of surface pretreatment/treatment methods to affect electrical beneficiation potential of the minerals. The surface treatment methods vary in a wide range from simple surface cleaning to more complicated chemical conditioning and doping. The knowledge of the solid-state physics and chemistry leads to improve the beneficiation potential of different mineral systems by choosing suitable treatment method(s). Despite the complexity and multiplicity of the charging mechanisms, difficulties in separating fines it seems to be beneficial make our attempts to further investigate and develop the process as dry, low cost beneficiation process, especially nowadays when environmental concerns, as well as energy and water consumptions are main concerns for mining industry."

La alteración es típica de los depósitos de alta sulfuración con sílice en la parte central rodeado de argilica avanzada y argílica, cuya mineralización en óxidos está relacionada principalmente a brechas hidrotermales y tufos de cristales y líticos con textura de sandy sílica, vuggy sílica y sílice masiva. Sin embargo los trabajos geológicos y algunos sondajes realizados recientemente en el proyecto, han permitido reconocer un cuerpo mineralizado de oro-cobre (0.40 g/t Au y 0.054% Cu), con ensamble de alteración clorita-caolín-paragonita-muscovita, relacionado a un intrusivo dioritico; observándose una gradación de los ensambles de alteración (arcillas a micas blancas), es decir de una alteración argílica intermedia (dickita-illita) a una alteración filica (paragonita-muscovita), lo cual evidencia una transición de un sistema de alta sulfuración a un sistema pórfido.

As a continuation of previous work, further tests have been carried out to recover silver from the residues obtained in a zinc jarosite process. Selective flotation has been performed with different reagents, and ?cleaning steps have been introduced to upgrade the silver concentrate. Leaching of crude residues, as well as flotation tailings, has been carried out with cyanide and thiourea. Finally, the different beneficiation methods are compared, and the industrial aspects? of their application are reviewed.

The Cameco Key Lake mill began processing U-bearing waste rock from the McArthur River mine in 2000. This ore often contains elevated levels of calcium (>4% by mass), resulting in less than favourable conditions in parts of the Key Lake mill, yet still contains U3O8 at a concentration of about 0.3%. To recover the U3O8 and reject as much calcium as possible, modifications were made to the grinding circuit in late 2007 to include a gravity concentrator. The concentrator allows this mineralized waste to be processed separate from the regular blend material, rejecting calcium and concentrating U3O8, thus improving the operating conditions in areas such as SX. This will be presented in greater detail along with results and further work.

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Spokane Research Laboratory is developing, modifying, and testing equipment to replace the necessity of doing lifting tasks manually. To reduce single-event lift injuries, equipment having mechanical automatic weight sensing and balancing control was investigated. The Coleman manipulator was selected for testing. Modifications to the Coleman manipulator to make it more suitable for underground mine use included mobilization, self-containment, all-purpose gripper attachment, and support jacks. To reduce or eliminate the need to clean off manually the materials that commonly plug grizzly openings (timbers, wire mesh, roof bolts, and other debris), a track-guided pincher arm device was developed. The TGPA attaches to an impact hammer head, and the pincher arms are controlled by the operator of the hammer. Oversized rock can be broken with the pincher arms in the up position; the arms can then be lowered to grab and remove debris. Sweeping action to remove cohesive fines bridging grizzly openings is also greatly improved. This device is especially useful in recessed grizzlies. An industrial gun was tested to evaluate its effectiveness in breaking oversized rock. Boulders up to 76 cm in diameter were successfully broken to minus-33 cm. Although methods to control fly rock need to be developed, an industrial gun may be a safe and inexpensive alternative to breaking oversized rock in certain underground mining situations.

In late 2014 the Flinders Power Management Team was executing business improvement plans to ensure continued electricity generation until 2028 and beyond. Six months later, in June 2015, the Board announced the closure of the Flinders Power South Australian business, including the Leigh Creek Coal Mine, the Northern and Playford Power Stations located at Port Augusta and the 250km railway line. The announcement was preceded by a brief period of internal planning. A date was soon set for ceasing coal mining operations, being November 2015. The mine is unique in many ways. Located approximately 550km north of Adelaide the site has over 100 years of history and was formerly operated by the South Australian Government. Privatisation in 2000 saw the mine continue operation under Perpetual Leases from the South Australian Government. The leases included exemptions from multiple sections of the Mining Act 1971, obliging primary regulation under the Mines and Works Inspection Act 1920. The coal, being a low rank sub-bituminous brown coal, is prone to self-heating and spontaneous combustion. The mine and company town Leigh Creek were the economic and cultural heartbeat of the community. Facilities at the mine were shared by the community and vice versa. While many mines across Australia and the world enter periods of care and maintenance, few have been actively closed to the point of relinquishment (Bennett and Lacy, 2016). A swift decision to close, followed by a short mining operations shutdown period, presented significant technical and regulatory challenges for both the mine operator and for Regulators. The subsequent joint risk mapping process employed by Flinders Power and South Australian Mining Regulators was a unique real-world example of collaborative mine closure planning and execution. Lessons learnt are valuable for all mines, production facilities and for Regulators, even for those who may wrongly assume that closure is many years away. CITATION:Williams, B and Querzoli, A, 2018. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 10 to 15 years. These developments have included developing the world?s first 360° surround, virtual reality (VR), stereo projection theatre system known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment), which was developed by iCinema, a collaborative venture between the UNSW Faculties of Engineering and College of Fine Arts. The UNSW School of Mining Engineering has been responsible for development of mining applications virtual reality software modules and to date, has developed eighteen different mine safety training and mining engineering education modules which run in the AVIE environment. This platform and technology package provides a unique ?immersive environment? experience for groups of trainees or students who can engage with the simulated environment in the complete safety of the virtual reality theatre. In all of the major international mining industries, safety is of paramount importance, and training of personnel is an essential component of any comprehensive proactive safety management system. All personnel need to be aware of the inevitable hazards around them at all times, as well as understand appropriate safety and operational procedures. This can be done by conventional class-room style training sessions, or by provision of training documentation. However the effectiveness of such systems is often very limited due to the inability of trainers to engage with the audience for a lengthy period of time; or to convey the often complex and variable mining environments and situations which can exist in a typical mine. The ability to immerse the trainees in a virtual mine environment, with all the reality of an actual mine but with none of the physical exposure to actual hazards, provides a far more effective and engaging training experience. Furthermore, in the virtual world, trainees can be exposed to the very unlikely, but nevertheless high consequence hazards such as mine fires, falls of ground or outbursts, without any risk to their safety and well-being. The end result is that trainees will be far more engaged with the learning environment they find themselves in, and will develop a far higher level of understanding of the topics, rather than simply experiencing a passive class-room style learning environment offered by conventional training modes. The UNSW systems have been implemented widely within the Australian mining industry and the mining engineering education sector and are now being adopted internationally. This paper presents an overview of the innovative technologies involved in these virtual reality systems ? as applied to the mining industry. Modules developed for both mineworker training and mining engineering student learning will be presented, to illustrate the effectiveness and value of such a training and education approach.

Development of the process from the pilot stage to the current operation of the Capel, W.A. plant is briefly described. The design criteria for a larger sized plant are discussed together with factors that relate suitable feedstocks and coal types to the capital cost, capacity and product grade of future plants at locations other than Capel. The application of the process to the direct reduction of iron ores is briefly discussed including its commercial application at Rockwood, Tennessee.

"The Alameda Corridor-East (ACE) Construction Authority awarded a $172.6 million contract to Walsh Construction Company (Walsh) for the construction of a 2.2 mi (3.5 km) long grade separation including a 1.4 mi (2.3 km) long trench that will allow Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Amtrak passenger trains to operate below ground through the city of San Gabriel, Calif. The project is necessary as the ACE trade corridor accommodates approximately 60% of the shipping containers that move from San Pedro Bay, the busiest port facility in the western hemisphere, to the rest of the country via an extensive rail network. Rail traffic is expected to increase by as much as 160% by 2020, and the resultant delays to vehicular traffic is projected to increase by an estimated 300%. The San Gabriel Trench Project is designed to mitigate the effects of this increased train and vehicle traffic throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Malcolm Drilling Company (Malcolm) was selected by Walsh to perform the specialty foundation and ground improvement work for the San Gabriel Trench.This project is part of ACE’s program to create 22 grade separations and safety improvements at 39 grade crossings throughout the San Gabriel Valley. In addition to safety improvements that will eliminate crossing collisions and delays to emergency responders, the project will reduce vehicle congestion and emissions from passenger cars and trucks having to wait for passing trains, and the project will also reduce locomotive horn and crossing bell noise to local residents.Construction of this portion of the project began in late 2012, and it is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017, having created approximately 9,000 jobs during this period. The project is being funded from Proposition 1B transportation bonds approved by California in 2006, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Measure “R,” and other local and federal funds. The overall project cost is estimated to be $313 million."

The Commission called tenders for a four boom hydraulic jumbo, plus basket, on an art- iculated carrier in Sept. 1977. Atlas Copco submitted the successful tender in Jan. 1978 for the supply of a three boom jumbo, plus basket. The Promec TH470 jumbo was commiss- ioned in the 2000 m long Sophia tunnel in Nov. 1978. Adequate spare parts were not available during the first three months of operation and the hammers could not be overhauled at the recommended interval. One hammer was removed after drilling 13 600 m due to a crack in the intermediate housing. Tests were conducted with different types of drilling consumables. Both rope and Hi-teed threads were tested and found compar- able. The average penetration rate in the granite was 1.1 m/min. Initially the drillers were not experienced enough to operate the BUT 15ERH booms without causing damage to the booms and hoses. Drilling deviation espec- ially of the perimeter holes was greater than expected. It is now obvious that greater attention must be given to attracting, train- ing and retaining the right type of operator and maintenance fitter.

The AntaKori Cu-Au-Ag Project in the Hualgayoc mining district, northern Peru is a complex system dominated by calcic Cu-Au-Ag skarn hosted in Cretaceous sedimentary units. The skarn system is partially overprinted by two younger epithermal systems: high sulphidation (HS) epithermal gold-copper-silver mineralization related to the adjacent Tantahuatay system, and intermediate sulphidation carbonate-base metal Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu mineralization related to late stage rhyolite stocks and flow domes (Wilson, 2012).

The Shasta and California Iron-ore deposits are 14 miles northeast of Redding, Shasta County, Calif.; and since 1907 have produced more than 300,000 short tons of exceptionally pure iron ore. Although some ore was mined and smelted from 1907 through the First. World War, most of it has been produced from 1942 through 1945 for use in making heavy ship ballast and concrete anchorages for mines. Irregular masses of magnetite, ranging from lumps of a few tons to pods containing about 25,000 tons, occur associated with skarn near the contact between the McCloud limestone and a younger granitic intrusive. Some of the deposits are low-grade, whereas others are nearly pure magnetite. Selective mining and hand sorting are necessary to produce a high-grade product. Investigation of these deposits by the Bureau of Mines included 2,910 feet of diamond drilling, some surface sampling of the principal mineralized zone and beneficiation tests. Resulting factual data are given in the body of this report.
