"Graphite is one of the most versatile of non-metallic minerals because of its diversified properties, for example: it is unctuous; it marks readily; burns slowly; is almost chemically inert; is flexible over a large temperature range; is a good conductor of heat and electricity; is hydrophobic; has a negative temperature coefficient of resistivity; has excellent weathering properties; tends to emulsify with water-in-oil; is readily soluble in iron; and after oxidative treatment, can exfoliate like vermiculite. These properties give rise to its major uses in lubrication, refractories, marking instruments, electrical products and paints.Flake graphite is the variety which commonly occurs in Canada; the provinces of Ontario and Quebec contain the deposits of economic significance, although graphite occurs in other provinces. The beneficiation of graphite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting graphite 's importance as an industrial mineral. Thirty-eight studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1918and 1989anda review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information includes mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results; flotation parameters and reagent concentration data are presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of graphite ores from a variety of origins."

The harmfulness and destructiveness of mine gas explosion is quite serious, which is the first of all kinds of coal mine disasters. Once the gas explosion occurs, it could instantly generate explosion shock waves, high temperature airflows, and disaster gases, which cause the destruction of underground ventilation structures, disruption of airflow direction in a mine ventilation network, and miners’ deaths by asphyxiation. As an important barrier to prevent the spread of accidents caused by the gas explosion, the safety and reliability of the mine seal affects the mine’s production and the health of workers. Due to the demands of coal mine production and transportation, a large number of longitudinal and horizontal roadway networks have been developed underground. There are not only many flat and straight roadways in the complex roadway network structure, but also a large number of different types of bifurcations and bends. Once a gas explosion occurs, the impact of the blast waves on the mine seal after passing through the complex path is difficult to determine. Therefore, this paper establishes a numerical model of bifurcated and cornered roadways and studies how the impact of gas explosion shock waves on the structure of sandwich mine seal after passing through different types of bifurcated and cornered roadways. The damage state of sandwich mine seal is analyzed. The researching finding could prevent and manage the spread of gas explosion disaster, and improve the disaster mitigation of mine explosion accident.

"Various kinds of civil engineering structures and facilities were seriously damaged in the earthquake in Tohoku and Kanto regions of Japan on 11 March 2011 due to the greatness of its magnitude. In contrast, many structures resisted the large seismic force having been reinforced by the CDM (Cement Deep Mixing) method, which is often used for increasing the bearing capacity of ground and improving seismic performance. This paper summarizes the field survey undertaken to investigate damage to structures and facilities reinforced by the CDM method. Several prefectures and metropolitan areas were selected for the survey, based on the occurrence of strong seismic motions. A total of 847 structures and facilities were studied, in the survey using a questionnaire, which mainly inquired about the appearance of structures and facilities. Of the respondents to the questionnaire, 789 replied that there were no seriously damaged structures. The paper presents the damaged and non-damaged sites of CDM-technique sites and non-CDM-techniques sites. It can be concluded from the field survey that the CDM Method demonstrates high efficacy and durability against a strong seismic motions.INTRODUCTIONDuring the afternoon of 11 March, 2011, a huge magnitude-9.0 Mw (Category 9.0 on the Richter scale) earthquake occurred about 25 kilometers below the Pacific Ocean’s surface off the coast of Tohoku. This massive earthquake, now called the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake was the largest earthquake ever observed in Japan. The seismic intensity of this earthquake was measured 7, the maximum on the Japanese intensity scale, as observed 7 in northern Miyagi Prefecture. The earthquake caused severe damage over a wide area from Tohoku to Kanto, and triggered large tsunamis that struck the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Kanto. The number of missing and fatalities caused by this earthquake exceeded 18,000 persons, making this an unparalleled earthquake disaster with a cost-in-life toll not experienced by Japan in recent years. Because of the scale of its seismic motions, the earthquake damaged facilities and structures of many kinds. In the years prior to this earthquake, the CDM method was used extensively to increase the bearing capacity of the ground as an anti-seismic countermeasure and to prevent liquefaction. Immediately after the earthquake, the CDM Association visually surveyed the state of damage to about 800 facilities in the Tohoku and Kanto regions where a seismic intensity of 5 or higher was observed. This report summarizes the survey of damage to facilities and structures constructed applying the CDM method in order to confirm the durability and performance of the method against seismic motions."

Most coal being used in the United States has been subjected to one or' more processes of coal preparation. The physical and chemical characteristics of a coal have a marked influence on the ultimate uses that coal may have. The selection of the proper preparation processes may similarly be important in producing the best practical coal product for any particular use. The physical composition and distribution of physical constituents in the coal will partially determine the efficiency of the preparation process chosen and conversely distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by the preparation process. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. If a coal having' certain specifications is desired, these evaluations trill assist in providing information needed for the production of this coal.

"In contrast with the well-publicized Pittsburgh coal, and the Everglades of Florida, most coal-forming swamps of Cretaceous time in western North America occupied relatively limited areas. They formed in areas of irregular subsidence, bounded by the changing levee systems of meandering streams. Coke quality is determined by the physical and chemical behaviour of the vitrain during thermal decomposition. Vitrain is at least in part a colloidal substance, originally containing large proportions of water; its formation and survival depend on maintaining a shallow cover of stagnant water up to the time of burial. Heat from swamp fires or subaerial dyhydration could destroy it or impair its quality. Observed patterns suggest that the metamorphism is almost entirely thermal, and that there is little relation to tectonic stresses, or loading. These coals had probably achieved essentially their present rank prior to deformation. Evidence of frictional heating along the thrust planes is minimal or absent. Normally, coal beds are aquifers. Oxygen carried into the subsurface becomes available and reacts with the vitrain to destroy its natural thermoplastic properties. The tolerance of oxygen without loss of thermoplasticity is inversely related to the volatile content. Significant lateral variations of coal thickness are common and sometimes occur in short distances. In deformed areas these thickness changes are more commonly due to differential tectonic stress rather than to original thicknesses of coal. Locally, coal is known to have flowed into cavities, or fractures. These principals are discussed in relation to coal deposits of western Alberta and eastern British Columbia."

The Bureau of Mines is currently conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate all aspects of recovering gold from large, low-grade deposits in the Golden Sunlight area, Whitehall mining district, Jefferson County, Mont. Prior to World War II this area produced significant quantities of gold. The study includes geologic mapping, diamond drilling, assaying, computer analysis of assay data, metallurgical research and ore testing, mine and mill planning, and an economic evaluation of all factors bearing on the establishment of a producing gold mine. Preliminary evaluation of the deposit indicates about 31 million tons of submarginal gold resources. American Exploration and Mining Co. (AMEX) has assisted the Bureau in this project by providing drill site preparation, control assays, and geological aid for the Bureau's exploration work and by furnishing comprehensive assay information of the property and copies of base and geologic maps. This report presents the geology and mining history of the area, together with a summary of Bureau work in progress.

For the deep foundation of podium and tower of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, BAUER (MALAYSIA) SDN. BHD. constructed 225 bored piles with diameter range of 2.0 to 2.5 m. In order to comply with the depth requirement of the design, for planning purposes and preparation for site, the drilling equipment was required to achieve a maximum drilling depth of 150 m. Actual piles constructed on site were deeper than 120 m. These dimensions caused superlative challenges which included but were not limited to; controlling the open hole stability over time with polymer, installing 70-ton heavy steel cages, pouring up to 550 m³ concrete continuously, in conjunction with installation of kingposts into workable, fresh concrete. The piling works were executed with a BG 72, the biggest drilling rig globally available, and the stringent verticality of the pile bore holes which required approval prior to cage installation. For verification of verticality, Bauer’s patented Drilling Inclination System was successfully used.

In February, 1976, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation obtained an option from Foote Minerals, Inc., to evaluate reprocessing of two uranium tailing piles. Foote received ownership of the Naturita and Durango tailing piles in 1967 through the purchase of Vanadium Corporation of America. The option was exercised in November, 1976, after initial testwork proved that a viable extraction technique existed. Preparation for production at Naturita began immediately with engineering and en¬vironmental permitting proceeding simultaneously. Production began in December, 1977, just 22 months after acquisition of the property and-was completed 17 months later.

Open cut coal-mining has been conducted in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland for almost five decades, and has disturbed an estimated area of 140 000 ha of agricultural land until 2011. Approximately one-third of the area disturbed by mining has been rehabilitated to pastures or bushland. However, none of the rehabilitated land has yet been assigned a specific end-use. This research project develops an approach for assessing end-use risks for the regionÆs mined land, and develops risk assessment models for selected end-uses. First, a web-based survey of stakeholders was used to identify risks to be assessed. The risks identified were surface erosion, subsurface erosion, bushfires, weeds and feral animals. The survey also identified possible end-uses of bushland and grazing. Second, conceptual risk models were developed based on the risk assessment concepts of likelihood and consequence specified in the Australian and New Zealand risk assessment standards. Likelihood was modelled using site characteristics and management factors that influence the occurrence probability of risks (eg surface erosion), while consequence was modelled using a set of site condition indicators and condition thresholds (changes in root-zone water-holding capacity, soil erodibility, vegetation ground cover and soil organic matter and transition probability to a non-preferred ecosystem type).The factors influencing likelihood and consequence for each risk have been integrated using Bayesian networks. The next step in model development is to parameterise the Bayesian networks using existing equations, empirical datasets, or expert opinion where data are not available. The parameterised models will be used to assess grazing and bushland end-uses against erosion, bushfire, weed and feral animal risks for rehabilitated mined land sites, with the purpose of identifying the relative risks associated with each end-use, and the landform design specifications and land management practices under which end-use risks are minimised.CITATION:Maczkowiack, R I, Smith, C and Erskine, P D, 2012. INTRODUCTION Legend has it that when Isembard Kingdom Brunel was confronted with the cost and consequences of one of his bridges having failed, he responded cheerfully that the event had saved investors and taxpayers a fortune because it prevented him from repeating the same design at several other locations. To meet the demands of rejuvenating and expanding the transportation system in an era of industrial growth Brunel and his contemporaries introduced bold designs and many innovations. Great advances in design and construction techniques resulted, yet these too had their practical limits as the story tells. In the gold mining industry today we face the same challenge of expansion, yet designers must respond mindful of economic restraints. Is innovation the answer? It has two meanings; to bring in novelties and to make changes. Distinguishing between improvement and novelties, or simply recognizing the benefits and limitations of new ideas over proven technology is part of good design. This paper will illustrate the practical aspects of selecting appropriate solutions to a design problem by examining a variety of examples common throughout the industry. Since a variety of engineering disciplines contribute to the design of a gold processing plant, and each has some old wisdom to impart or new development to boast this paper is divided into the different areas of expertise involved.

THE present century has witnessed an amazing transformation in the uses of limestone. From being mainly a structural material, a role it has played since the beginning of civilization, it has become one of the in-dispensable raw materials for use in the great chemical and metallurgical industries that play such a vital part in the economic life of the nations today. Its uses have become so diversified and numerous that it enters, directly or indirectly, into nearly every phase of modern life. In this introductory paper it is proposed merely to outline the general usefulness of limestone and to point out some of its salient features, and to leave any detailed discussion of uses to the papers that follow. The term limestone as herein used embraces all kinds from the variety known as high-calcium limestone, which is composed almost entirely of calcite, to the dolomitic variety, composed largely or entirely of the mineral dolomite. Lime is simply calcined limestone and, in considering the uses of limestone, the uses of lime should also be included, particularly in view of the fact that, in many processes, it is possible to use limestone in either the raw or the calcined state.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

This research was conducted with the objective of suppressing the respirable dust in coal mines by foam application. A formulation was developed for making a water-based, high-expansion, and limited stability foam. A horizontal boring machine was used as a laboratory coal mining model for generating coal dust. A modified laboratory foam generator was built. Foam was applied directly to the point at which dust was being formed by the cutter of the boring machine working against a block of coal. Coal dust was sampled with an impinger and analyzed for the particle count and particle size distribution. Coal dust suppression test results on freshly generated dust have demonstrated very clearly that in laboratory scale experiments over 90% of the respirable coal dust can be suppressed by foam. These tests were run when initial coal du t concentrations were 10 and 70 million particles per cubic foot (mppcf).

Managing heat stress on Australian mine sites is a complex and enduring challenge due to the combined and variable contribution of environmental conditions, physical activities, and protective equipment. Inappropriately managed, heat stress can place significant physical strain on workers, leading to serious and chronic health issues. Additionally, excessive heat stress can dramatically reduce productivity, with 30 per cent of workers reporting a loss of productivity due to occupational heat strain. In Australia, due to increased absenteeism and reduced work performance, heat strain is estimated to have an annual economic burden of over $8 billion.

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. Introduction Air conditioning is a term which has come into common use only during our generation. By definition, it means the positive and accurate control of temperature, humidity, movement, purity, and component constituents of the atmosphere within an enclosure. Claiming such results for Noranda's ventilation system, or for that of any other large mine, at present would be an idle boast. However, we are working toward that end with considerable success. Modern underground ventilation at Noranda dates back about six years. The later development of air conditioning is in its fourth season, but still in the experimental stage. Various ingenious methods have been devised to cool mines which, because of climatic or geological conditions or depth, are excessively warm. A few installations have been made to warm intake air during the winter months where this is necessary. However, the method currently in use at Noranda is unique in that it accomplishes both ends by one process. This method utilizes the freezing and melting of ice to equalize year-round temperatures. Mining Methods While a discussion of mining methods at Noranda is not proposed in this paper, a brief summary may be in order. The Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited, has been developed by six shafts, four of which are now active. The most recent, an internal shaft, extends to 6,000 feet below surface, but all of the ore mined to date has come from above the 3,000-foot level. Figure 1 shows a model of principal ore bodies. The area mined is relatively small in plan, considering its vertical extent and the tonnage per vertical foot. Most of the ore lies within an ellipse about 600 by 1,000 feet. While this has certain advantages, the mining of such massive orebodies has presented many problems.

Neste trabalho será apresentado estudo sobre nanotubos de dióxido de titânio (TiO2) sintetizados pela técnica de anodização com variação do potencial entre 10 V e 50 V durante tempo fixo de 1 h. Além disso, para obter a estrutura cristalina deseja as amostras passaram por um tratamento térmico que foi realizado a 400 °C por 3 h a uma taxa de aquecimento de 10 °C/min. As amostras foram caracterizadas pelas técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura com emissão de campo (MEVFEG), difração de raios X (DRX), espectrofotometria no ultravioleta visível (UV-VÍS) e de espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica (EIE). Observou-se que o potencial de anodização exerce influência obre a morfologia dos nanotubos e sobre a absorção de luz e, consequentemente, sobre o desempenho fotoeletroquímico das amostras. O melhor desempenho foi obtido a partir da amostra anodizada a 30 V, este resultado está relacionado com a sua ótima absorção de luz e a sua baixa resistência ao transporte de carga interfacial obtido por EIE.

Mining-induced seismicity is one of the adverse side effects of mining with the use of explosives at great depths. Disturbance of the primary stress state by the development of the network of excavations combined with the continuous generation of dynamic loads by the detonation of explosives in mining faces has a negative impact on the level of safety of crew and machines. To ensure the stability of excavations it is necessary to identify in detail the nature of the seismic hazard by means of continuous seismic measurements. Unfortunately, the technologies used so far are characterized by high costs of installation and further maintenance, which clearly limits the possibility of using a large number of stations in a small area. A breakthrough in this matter may be the technology of microelectromechanical systems, which is several times cheaper than standard solutions used in mining seismology. This technology, with the appropriate configuration of devices, can be successfully used to monitor dynamic phenomena generated by mining activities. As part of this study, the assumptions and configurations of a prototype 42-channel accelerometer network using MEMS technology have been presented. The network was installed in the Lubin underground copper mine in Poland in a seismically active area, where multi-face destress blasting are conducted regularly. As a result, 14 tri-axial accelerometers were installed in the immediate vicinity of the active mining front at a distance of about 1,000–4,000 ft (300–1,200 meters) from the closest faces. Highfrequency recordings are collected based on algorithms that trigger the system when the Peak Particle Acceleration set value is exceeded or on the basis of a manual external triggering device connected to the blasting machine. During the measurement period, several high-energy seismic tremors and several dozen of waveforms generated by blasting were recorded. The obtained results are the basis for assessing the effectiveness of the destressing measures and for the analysis of geomechanical risk based on periodic analysis of the velocity of seismic wave propagation
