On Sept. 4, 1914, Mine No. 1 of the Union Coal Co., Adamson, Oklahoma, suddenly caved, entombing thirteen miners whose bodies were never recovered. The seam of coal mined, the Lower Hartshorne, averaged 5 ft. in thickness and dipped at an angle varying from 22" to 30n. The strata overlying the coal seam were sandstones and shales. The mine was worked by the pillar-and-room method, the rooms being driven directly up the dip of the seam. All coal was blasted off the solid. Rooms were turned on short centers and room pillars were thin and irregular, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the form; showing the mine workings. Some cracks had been observed on the surface, it is said, at least a month before the squeeze occurred, but the collapse of the mine workings came very suddenly. As is usual when squeezes occur on such steep dips and the pillars fail, the crush progressed rapidly down the dip until it reached solid coal; there was a line of break, or draw, over in the solid coal. Several well-defined cracks appeared on the surface, after the mine had squeezed, but there was no appreciable subsidence of the surface, the weight seemed to be thrown entirely to the dip. About one year after the squeeze, and after the workings of the adjoining mine, NO. 4, had been retimbered and made safe, the writer inspected the tenth north (right) entry, or lift, off of No. 4 slope, which was below and fairly near the lowest caved portion of mine No. 1. The roof shale was composed of thin layers, which had been bent in somewhat the same manner as the leaves of a book having flexible covers are bent when the book is folded or rolled up in the hands. Though the mine workings are immediately beneath the streets and buildings of the mining town of Adamson, business was not disturbed by the squeeze, so far as any subsidence of the surface was concerned. No surface monuments were available and no elevations were taken, but the mine workings had been accurately surveyed and traversed, and the streets of the town overlying the mine workings had been carefully platted on the mine map, so that it was possible to locate accurately the cracks on the surface.

Particular emphasis will be given to the differing levels of technical work (and their relative cost) which must be accomplished to supply the information necessary to satisfy potential investor groups, whether they be other mining companies, equity investors, or financial institutions such as venture capital firms or commercial banks.

The 1963 Jackling Award lecturer describes the founding of Banner Mining Co. and its trials and tribulations before becoming an established firm. Such aspects as geological description of Banner mining areas, history of exploration and production, areas of present interest to the company and research work conducted by the company are included. Several years ago a wealthy Chinese business friend of mine purchased an interest in a proposed oil well to be drilled a great distance from his home. A few months later it came in as a producer and proved to be a huge success and materially added to his resources. I asked him why a man of his wealth should be so lucky in a venture outside his sphere of knowledge when most people of modest means never seemed to get ahead. His answer was, "Fat Hoy takes a chance." Even though this was his answer, I knew from my association with him that there were other tempering considerations which Mr. Hoy applied before making up his mind to enter any transaction. First, he was a cautious individual. He was also a great believer in details and insisted on knowing everything possible about a situation, and finally, he was what we call a very solid individual with good basic instincts and judgment. This philosophy of Mr. Hoy may be applied to most any business but especially to those engaged in a search for natural resources such as mining where great risks are involved. This article concerns events in the history and growth of Banner Mining Co., with which I have been associated for 27 years in capacities from mine surveyor to vice president. Mr. Hoy's philosophy has played a significant role in the exploration projects of this company over the years, but what is more important, the officers, directors, and controlling interests in Banner have been aggressive in their search for ore reserves. THE BIRTH OF BANNER Banner Mining Company was incorporated in September 1935 by a group of Oklahoma and Texas oil men for the purpose of exploring and developing the Bonney-Manilla mines at Lordsburg, N.M. These properties had a history of intermittent production since the first ore discoveries as far back as 1870. Most of the production from the district has come from four mines, namely, the Eighty-Five, the Atwood, the Bonney-Manilla, and the Misers Chest. The last two are now owned by Banner Mining. The Eighty-Five mine operated between 1885 and 1931, and production totalled 1,494,287 tons averaging 0.11 oz of gold per ton, 1.23 oz of silver per ton, and 2.80% copper. The vein extended for a distance of about 3000 ft northeast and was mined to a depth of 1650 ft. The Atwood mine, adjoining the Eighty-Five mine, to date has been of lesser importance as a producer, but it has been operating for several years producing high silica flux ores for a smelter. Production totalled 352,828 tons up to January 1, 1962 From the Bonney-Manilla and Misers Chest mines, owned by Banner, production through 1961 totalled 2,006,343 tons with an average grade as mined of 0.0192 oz of gold per ton, 0.760 oz of silver per ton and 2.63% copper. Banner built a 150-tpd flotation mill in 1936 after almost a year of development on the 600 level of the Bonney mine. After less than one year's operation, it became apparent that the 150-tpd rate was not sufficient to make a reasonable profit due to the marginal grade ores. The low tenor of the ore, mainly chalco-pyrite in a highly siliceous gangue, made mandatory the close control of costs in order to make ends meet. A 300-tpd unit was added to the mill in 1937, and it is still the operating unit today. The clean sulfides presented no problems in milling. A metallurgist doing research on it at the time stated that the copper minerals seemed to have a built-in desire to float. Mill recovery of copper throughout the 27 years of operation has averaged 96.23%. A PERIOD OF FORCED GROWTH World War II brought many hardships to Banner. Labor and supply shortages caused drastic curtailment in development work. Rapidly rising costs far outdistanced any relief from pegged prices which we received from Government agencies. "As part of a series describing the nickel operations of Vale Canada (formerly known as Inco), this paper focuses on the 1973 to current operations of the Copper Cliff nickel refinery in Ontario, Canada. The process used there employs the formation of Ni tetracarbonyl at high CO (gas) pressure and its subsequent decomposition at somewhat elevated temperatures to produce highly pure Ni pellets and powders. Personal sampling of workplace aerosol dusts is reported, with information on specific Ni compounds in the aerosols.RÉSUMÉ Dans le cadre de la série d’articles décrivant les opérations de nickel chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco), le présent article cible les opérations de 1973 à ce jour à l’affinerie de nickel de Copper Cliff en Ontario, Canada. "Aerial surveys of the open pits have been conducted regularly at Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. -a subsidiary of American Smelting and Re-fining Company -since 1958. Ground controls are supplied by Lake Asbestos, and a topographic map of the pits at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft., with 2-foot contour intervals, is obtained by aerial photography. The information from the topographic map is then transferred by the Lake Asbestos engineering staff to sections from which the volumes removed are calculated. Considering the size and complexity of the operation, this system has proved to be the cheapest, fastest and most accurate way of determining the quantities of rock and overburden removed. More than 11,000,000 tons of ore and waste are mined each year in three different pits. Further-more, the nature, shape and extent of the orebodies make it necessary to mine on many (up to eight) benches of a pit during a single year. In addition, there are sections of the pits where it is impossible or un-safe to survey the crest of some benches by standard ground methods. For these reasons, the tonnages obtained by truck count are checked and adjusted by aerial survey. These surveys are now taking place every six months. With this system, it is possible for a two-man surveying crew to look after all field work in the mine area."

"Jute fibers have in the past decades being investigated as possible reinforcement of polymer composites. However, information is still needed on the fiber interaction with a polymeric matrix for a complete evaluation of the capacity of load transference inside the composite. The present work investigated the interaction of jute fibers with polyester matrix by means of the critical length assessment through pullout tests. Tensile tests of polyester sockets embedded with different fiber lengths allowed the critical length to be determined and then the interface shear stress to be calculated. A relatively low interfacial strength was found, which indicates a weak adhesion between the ramie fiber and the polyester matrix. The SEM analysis of pulled out fibers corroborates this result.Introduction Natural fiber, mainly those lignocellulosic extracted from plants, have, in the past few decades, attracted the attention not only of scientists but also of industrial technologists of our society interested in their engineering applications. As it is well known, uses of natural fiber in clothes carpets, baskets, ropes and low cost construction roofing has existed from the beginning of our civilization. Today environmental and energy saving issues are motivating research works on new uses of lignocellulosic fibers in polymer composites [1-6]. Moreover, industrial application of lignocellulosic fiber composites are already in technological sectors such the automobile industry, packing and civil construction [7-9].In addition to environmental, economical and social benefits, some lignocellulosic fibers present specific properties that are comparable to those of other synthetic fiber used for polymer composite reinforcement. For instance, the specific strength (GPa.cm3/g) of curaua (1.31), sisal (0.92) and ramie (0.93) fibers, from results obtained with very thin diameters [10] are relatively closer to that of glass fiber E (1.33). Therefore, in principle, it would be technically justified to replace glass fiber, which is more expensive, toxic and represents a problem to the environment [ll], by a strong lignocellulosic fiber. However, serious drawbacks such non-uniform dimensions and heterogeneous properties [6] as well as the tendency to form aggregates during processing and incompatibility with a hydrophobic polymer matrix, reduce the potential of lignocellulosic fiber to be used as composite reinforcement [1-6]. In particular, a low interfacial strength causes a weak adhesion between the hydrophilic fiber and the polymer matrix."

The mean and the standard deviation were used to describe general sulfur and ash populations as well as specific populations of these variables from one coal seam. Both the mean and the standard deviation were incorporated in the exploration process to determine the number of drill cores necessary for seam evaluation and to guide the sequential drilling plan. Probability regions were computed to establish a basis for predicting probable ranges of average sulfur and ash concentrations that may be expected upon continued or future drilling. A computerized plot program was utilized to interpolate sulfur and ash concentrations between grid points. The plot program, which is essentially a moving average technique, permits a rapid evaluation of sulfur, sulfur forms, and ash spatial distributions as a drilling program progresses sequentially. This information, in the form of contour plots, can be made available to both the mining engineer and the fuel technologist in advance of mining to outline reserves, to improve selective mining, and to anticipate preparation facilities.

IN a previous paper1 the authors have investigated the structure of the oxide films formed on most of the metals that make up the alloys of this study. The metals were studied in order to provide basic information on the structures, both physical and chemical, of the oxide films and to determine how these structures are effected by the temperature, time of oxidation, and surface preparation. It was felt that an understanding of the physical and chemical structure as well as the stability of the oxide film might furnish clues as to the nature of the reaction process and the protective quality of the film. The oxidation of the metals was studied over the temperature range 300° to 700°C. except for copper, where the range selected was 100° to 500°C. The results of these studies were presented in graphical form as existence diagram, of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. For some of the metals the existence diagrams were simple and showed few chemical transitions, but there were numerous cases where the physical state of the oxide surface was a function of time and temperature. In general the physical state of the oxide surface changed with increasing temperature so as to increase the sharpness of the diffraction patterns and to cause orientation effects to be more pronounced. Deviations in lattice parameters from X-ray values were noted. In general these deviations were of positive nature and may be due to solid solution of the metal in the oxide lattice. This effect might be expected in thin oxide films. In a study of the oxidation of alloys containing two or more metals, there may arise the complicating factor of identification of the oxides formed. A thorough understanding of the oxides formed on the pure metals, therefore, was, essential before investigation of the oxidation of alloys. In this paper it is our purpose to present a study of the following problems: I The existence diagrams of various alloys. [2.] The effect of the structure of the [ying] metal on the existence diagram of Iron. 3. The effect of the percentage of chromium on the oxides formed on Fe-Cr alloys. 4. The relationships, if any, between the oxides formed and the protective quality of the oxides. The following alloys are included in this study: alloys of iron with body- centered cubic, face-centered cubic and other metals, 13 Cr-Fe, 18-8 stainless steel, K42B1 Nichrome V, Hipernik, Inconel, Stellite " 21," Refractaloy, Kovar, mild steel, a series of Cr-Fe alloys and a series of Co-Fe alloys. Since many of the commercial alloys in this list contain more than two metals, various complicating factors in the identification of the oxides formed may arise.

Phase changes in as-cast alloys in the Ni2 CoCr-Ni, Ti-NSAl system containing 0.1 wt pct C were studied after heat treatment at 1650°F. It was found that a vegion of CrCo-type s was developed in this system after I1000 hr. The tendency for s formation was dePendent upon the aluminum and litanium content, the s -forming tendency generally becoming more pro-nounced as the latter two elements are increased. s lended to form in interdendritic regioues and was associated with solutioning- of- carbide phases. Electron- vacancy computations for prediction of s formation on these alloys mere in sufficient agreement with what was observed experimentally to indicate that the method should be of value in assessing a-forming potential in cast alloys. However, the correlation of electrotz- vacancy numbers may not be as favorable in cast as cormpared to wrought alloys. THE increasing use of high-temperature alloys for longer times at higher temperatures has resulted in a real need for obtaining information on the phase changes taking place in these alloys since these changes often have a direct effect on properties. This paper reports on a study of the phase changes in Ni-Cr-Co-Al-Ti alloys after prolonged heating at 1650°F. The alloys were selected from the pseudo-ternary system Ni2CoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al and this system was chosen because it is the basis of many of the newer cast commercial superalloys. The attempt here was not to define accurately the boundaries of s formation in the NizCoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al system but to delineate the phase transformations taking place upon heating alloys covering a wide range of chemistries in this system. An addition of carbon was made to all alloys to further simulate commercial alloys. It was hoped that the information generated in this manner would be of more direct use to superalloy designers than an equilibrium diagram approach since commercial alloys generally have outlived their usefulness when equilibrium is attained. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were vacuum-melted from carbonyl-nickel pellet, vacuum-grade chromium, electrolytic cobalt, high-purity aluminum and titanium, and spec-trographic-grade carbon.

Manganese nodules cover great areas of deep ocean floor far from land, and have long been considered a major potential resource of nickel, copper, cobalt and perhaps manganese. A decade ago there was a period of intense evaluation of nodule fields, especially those lying between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones in international waters southeast of Hawaii. There, nodules are abundant and of high grade (average of 2.4% Ni+Cu+Co). The evaluation activity has since declined, but a recent agreement on lease boundaries among all interested parties may lead to a resurgence of work. Indeed, French and Japanese groups have pushed ahead with field and economic assessments.The Southwest Pacific, where there are large nodule fields in the waters of the Cook Islands and Kiribati, has seen considerable assessment of resources in the last ten years, especially through a major field programme of the Japanese Metal Mining Agency. The best prospect appears to be in the South Penrhyn Basin, in Cook Islands waters, where nodules are very abundant but of only moderate grade (1% Ni+Cu+Co). Using a cut-off of 5 kg of wet nodules per m2, Cronan (1989) and Cronan et al. (1989) have estimated the total resource to be a huge 110 million tonnes of Ni+Cu+Co.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

The total drill and blast concept is widely known in the mining industry. On the contrary, the quarry industry rarely adopts such working methods. Based on the experience of the CBS quarry in the North of France, this paper shows how up-to-date blasting technology and simple control methods can significantly improve the overall Mine to Mill efficiency of a quarry. The CBS quarry, in partnership with the EPC group and Nitro- Bickford Company, adopted a new working process three years ago aimed at increasing blast performance and related productivity of the downstream process (loading, hauling and crushing). The pattern geometry of each blast is controlled and explosive charging is carried out following the æconstant specific energyÆ CSE concept. This method provides a homogeneous fragmentation distribution and reduces vibration peak-particle-velocities. The impact on downstream productivity is controlled by means of a simple information management system, which collects and measures key parameters of the production process such as; hauling cycles, crusher throughput, secondary breaking and vibration peak particle velocity. This information system has clearly proved over time that consistent blast quality could be achieved, leading to a 30 per cent improvement in quarry productivity. Improved energy control of blasting through optimisation with electronic detonators, allowed a significant reduction in vibration impact on the environment. Improvement in blasting security, reduction in the environmental impact and productivity enhancement are major benefits that quarries can obtain from these CSE optimisation blasting methods.

Asbestos production in the United States is no match for the vast operations of Canada and the U.S.S.R. The majority of U.S. production is limited to the states of Vermont, California and Arizona, and the type of asbestos is limited to the variety of serpentine known as chrysotile. What little production of other varieties of asbestos such as tremolite and anthophyllite that has occurred over the past 100 years since asbestos became a useful commodity is of practically no significance. However, new developments in the field of environmental and occupational health hazards has startled the mining industry in this country and has already given a few particular companies reason to be concerned about the profitability and probability of their continued operation in the business of mineral processing. At the heart of these developments is the question and controversy over just what constitutes asbestos and what exactly is the definition of a fiber. To the mineralogist or, in fact, to practically anyone engaged in the process of mining and separating minerals there is little or no question about asbestos. It is not a distinct mineral but rather a commercial product serving specific applications for which a number of fibrous mineral types can qualify. To the hygienist pr health authority this definition is too general. They demand something they can detect, measure and control. To suit their purposes and simplify their task of detection, they have labelled the minerals chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthoph-yllite and actinolite as asbestos, and any particle of these minerals with an aspect ratio of 3:1 as an asbestos fiber. Availability of accurate geological information about the rock mass surrounding a tunnel or mine working is the key to enhance and optimize the required ground support measures. Various approaches have been used to obtain data on ground conditions, including the possibility of characterizing the ground while drilling for roof bolts, by the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) system, via optical, sonic and acoustic televiewers, and using various types of gamma probes. While there are many different systems for characterizing the ground in longer, larger-diameter holes drilled downward, the options for using probes and logging systems in short, small-diameter holes drilled in horizontal or an upward direction are very limited. This paper will present the results of recent field tests using optical televiewer (OPTV) to analyze the joints and voids in boreholes drilled in different directions. The studies show that OPTV is a promising tool; however, getting a good quality image from the upward drill holes still need to be studied. Meanwhile, estimated in-situ strength of the intact rock is needed to complement the jointing pattern for rock mass classification. For this purpose, preliminary steps for the development of a borehole scratcher to estimate rock strength will be discussed in this paper.

In most published discussions and theories of in situ combustion, the combustion fronts are assumed to be vertical. However, evidence from field tests leaves no doubt that combustion fronts often advance more rapidly along the top than near the bottom of a formation as a result of difference in density between injected air and formation liquids. The approximation proposed in this paper to determine the movement of the resultant tilted combustion surfaces states that the vertical rate of movement of combustion surfaces is proportional to the horizontal oxygen flux. Where self-ignition is possible, the proposed method demands that a secondary combustion surface exist around production wells which produce some oxygen. These secondary combustion surfaces may be formed long before the primary combustion surface can advance from injection to production wells. Heat liberated near production wells at these secondary combustion surfaces can contribute to an early increase in production rate. Results indicate that significant oil recoveries cannot be obtained from the usual flood patterns (five-spots, seven-spots, etc.) without producing large volumes of unused oxygen. Ideally, to increase oxygen- consumption efficiency, well patterns should allow oil production from a first line of production wells and gas production from more distant lines of producers. However, it may be desirable to produce some gas at all wells to support (and benefit from) active secondary combustion surfaces. Results indicate that the well spacing through which combustion can be advanced is larger than that predicted by other methods. A large number of production wells may still be desirable to take quick advantage of gravity drainage. From a comparison with results at South Belridge field, California, it appears that this method adequately describes oxygen concentration and temperature histories and combustion-front shapes. However, this method does not accurately locate the most advanced point of the combustion surface. There is some field evidence to substantiate the actual presence of secondary combustion surfaces at South Belridge. Use of the proposed method appears warranted at this time when lay-over of the combustion surface can be anticipated. INTRODUCTION The assumption of vertical combustion fronts has been embodied in all previous publicationsl-6 which use the movement of combustion fronts away from injection wells to determine the temperature and fluid distributions in the reservoir. The only paper concerned with a mathematical model of the combustion process in which a nonvertical combustion front is used was written by Gottfried.11 Actually, nonvertical combustion fronts have been observed in most in situ combustion field tests for which adequate data are available.7, 8, 6 In practice, the typical vertical extent of the burned zone decreases with distance from the injection well, and this burned zone is at or near the top of the sand body. In some cases, such as at South Belridge field near Taft, Calif., the combustion surface is almost horizontal over a very large area.8 Thus, for some years an obvious and serious gap has existed between theory (vertical fronts) and practice (tilted fronts). This is indicated in Fig. 1. Tilted combustion fronts such as observed at South Belridge8 sometimes result from the natural tendency of injected gases to rise to the top of an oil sand. Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. In 2014 the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) awarded a Design-Build contract to the joint venture team consisting of Skanska which is the managing partner; Kiewit Corporation and Ecco III (SKE) and HNTB as the lead design firm. The design build team employed methods to provide schedule savings and commercial benefits to the owner NYSDOT. This paper presents the design approach and construction methods used to accelerate drilled shaft installation supporting the main span foundation for the cable stayed bridge. The drilled foundation contractor Underpinning and Foundation Skanska, a division of Skanska was responsible for assisting with design, budgeting and construction of the drilled shaft foundation construction. As part of the Request for Proposal (RFP) bid process, Alternate Technical Concepts (ATC) was encouraged by the NYSDOT. The JV team proposed an ATC which involved a scaled production shaft testing method to simulate the ultimate load level, commonly referred to as the “Chicago Method” was used in the rock socket employing the Osterberg Cell (O-Cell) testing procedures. To the authors knowledge this was the first NYSDOT project where this approach was utilized on a Demonstration/Production installation to validate construction procedures and load bearing capacities. Construction procedures, challenges and solutions are discussed in detail. Upon completion of successful drilled shaft construction, concrete integrity is verified using two methods – Cross Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). A comparison from the contractor’s perspective is provided. Finally the drilled shaft rock socket is tested to ultimate end bearing values while rock socket side shear stresses are not exceeding the service level loading. Lateral load test was also a RFP requirement; the test arrangement and performance are discussed in detail as well. The Kosciuszko Bridge location poised unique geotechnical challenges on many levels shifting towards an extreme boundary of parameters encountered in New York City Area for drilled shaft construction. The JV team and specialty drilled shaft contractor actively participating in the shaft design and construction practice coordination and working with NYSDOT yielded a successful foundation solution which provided cost and schedule savings to the project.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi validar o modelo proposto por Kasuya et al para prever as durezas máximas da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) em juntas soldadas de um aço com médio teor de carbono através de ensaios empíricos. Para isto, se faz necessário o cálculo da energia de soldagem, quando foram testados modelos apresentados por Marques e Modenesi e também o modelo proposto por Perdigão. As juntas soldadas foram produzidas usando chapas de aço SAE 1045 com espessura de 12,7 mm como material base, chanfro de 70º e arame sólido do tipo ER70S-6. Para mudar as condições de resfriamento das juntas soldadas, foram testadas variações nos parâmetros de soldagem, tais como: energia de soldagem, taxa de resfriamento e temperaturas de pré-aquecimento e interpasses. Foram feitos experimentos com e sem pré-aquecimento e testados pós-aquecimento e alívio de tensões. As amostras da zona fundida e da ZTA tiveram as durezas medidas e foram analisadas por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Em linhas gerais, os resultados empíricos para a dureza na ZTA seguem a mesma tendência prevista pelo modelo de Kasuya et al, mas observam-se desvios na proporcionalidade validando a equação parcialmente para o material estudado. Também foi possível constatar que para o cálculo da energia de soldagem são adequados os modelos propostos por Perdigão e Marques e Modenesi.

Productivity is a fascinating concept. Like motherhood or apple pie, we know it as a good thing. Just what it means is not so clear. To a coal miner we assume it means tons of coal hauled from the mine. To the company president it means profit after capital, labor, and other costs have also been reckoned. To the government economist it means output in a balance of payments. What does it mean to the biologist, and can reclamation really be productive? In this paper we discuss productivity from a biological viewpoint, give some yield data for various types of reclamation plantings, and discuss how our demand for or acceptance of differing kinds of productivity is tied up in bigger questions of land use, environmental stability, and resource allocation.

Visando elucidar o comportamento da carepa terciária durante a laminação de tiras a quente, em um aço produzido como laminado a quente e com rigorosa exigência de qualidade superficial, foi realizada uma parada forçada do laminador, impondo-se, imediatamente, um resfriamento rápido da superfície da tira. Amostras coletadas na região do arco de contato mostraram que a carepa possui espessura na faixa de 10 ?m a 14 ?m na entrada das cadeiras, sendo reduzida para 7 ?m com a deformação, sem ocorrência de ruptura. Tais características indicam que, do ponto de vista do comportamento no trem acabador, a carepa apresenta espessura e plasticidade adequadas para evitar defeitos nos produtos laminados. A carepa foi constituída predominantemente por Fe3O4, óxido plástico na temperatura de laminação. Foi desenvolvido e aplicado um modelo de crescimento da carepa, que forneceu valores de espessura muito próximos dos medidos, se tornando uma ferramenta útil para análise da influência de condições de processo na carepa.
