The ever-increasing use off natural underground formations for storing natural gas has focused attention on the behavior of such storage formations under varying operating conditions. The need for a means of evaluating in¬dividual wells and groups of wells has become manifest. It is essential that industry and others be able to determine the rates of flow that can be ex¬pected from a given well or group of wells under different conditions and to ascertain whether certain wells are deteriorating. Such questions need more exact answers now than ever before because of the vital role underground gas storage plays in the industrial and domestic consumption of natural gas. The Bureau of Mines--in cooperation with the American Gas Association--has main¬tained an active interest in gas-well testing because of the implications of such test procedures on the consumption and efficient production of natural gas. A basis for testing gas wells was provided by the back-pressure method of Rawlins and Schellhardt (12).4/ They showed that for normal gas wells there is a consistent relationship between rates of delivery of gas and corresponding pressures when the formation pressures are used as the basis of interpretation, The equation for this relationship is as follows: Q = C (Pf2 - Ps2)n where; Q = rate of flow, generally expressed in cubic feet per 24 hours. Caterpillar recently held two, two-day demonstration programs for its mining customers. The event, billed as MineDemo by Caterpillar, consisted of two sessions held on consecutive weeks at the company's Tinaja Hills proving ground south of Tucson, AZ. The program included several classroom sessions that focused on Caterpillar equipment applications, including the VIMS (vital information management system) and the CAES (computer-aided earthmoving system). Also included were field demonstrations and the opportunity to test drive mining-related heavy equipment, including dozers, trucks, graders, shovels and loaders. Featured at the event were the recently upgraded 785, 789 and 793 C-Series trucks. Caterpillar recently announced the availability of the 136-t (150-st) 785C and the 177-t (195-st) 789C. The upgraded haulers have replaced the respective B-Series models. The 218-t (240-st) 793C was introduced in 1996. It, too, has been upgraded but retains the C-Series designation. While attending the press event, the author had the opportunity to test drive the 793C at the Tinaja Hills test site. It was amazing how well the machine handled. The operation was smooth and the braking system was precise. The cab was extremely comfortable. To see a C-Series truck in action, the author also visited Newmont Mining's Mesquite Mine, located in Cali¬fornia, across the border from Yuma, AZ. The Mesquite Mine operates a new model 785C truck. At the mine, temperatures have been measured as high as 58° C (138° F) in the pit. Needless to say, the ability to operate dependably in extreme heat is an important consideration for the mine operators. An interview with the driver and later with management confirmed that the 785C has worked out well. The driver praised the comfort of the cab and the ease of operation. Management reported significant fuel savings and was impressed by the truck's maintenance features.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. "Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

Soluble potassium salts in bedded underground salt deposits supply most of The world demand for potassium f or agricultural and industrial use. The potassium salts, sylvite and carnallite, were f irs, noted in drillcores in southern Saskatchewan during The search for oil and gas in ihe early /940s. Problems in shafi sinking beset pioneering potash companies, however, and cominuous production did no, begin uniil 1962. Powsh deposits in southern Saskatchewan occur within ihe uppermost 60 111 of the Middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite a, depths in excess of 900 m. Four groups of po/ash-bearing haliie beds have been distinguished: the Esierha-::,y, White Bear, Belle Plaine and Paiience Lake members. Powsh deposiis extend a jell' kilomeires into Manitoba and south imo orth Dakoia and non heasiern Moniana. Individual potash-rich beds are extensive and consistent in grade and Th ickness. Local th ickening occurs where carnallite is the dominani poiash mineral. Th e preferred ore, sy lviniie, is a clean mixiure of sylvite and haliie. Carnalliie and insolubles are avoided wherever possible because of Their detrimenwl effects on mine stability, grade and refining. Sy lvin ite is exTracted by underground mining or brought TO swjace as brine in solution mining. Poiash is separaiedfrom halite byfloiation or sequential crystallization. The refined produci, potassium chloride, is employed as a fertilizer ingredient as well as in chemical and other industrial capaciiies. The ten poiash mines of Wesiern Canada all are in Saskatchewan and account for aboui 25 per cem of world production. Faciliiies are being expanded, and a new mine and refinery was planned for ihe Breden bury area. Deposiis in Manitoba also were being evaluaied.

United States Steel Corporation began mining coal in southern West Virginia at the turn of the century, and until the late 40's production was confined to underground mines. Surface mining was initiated in our southern West Virginia -holdings as a means of recovering coal that could not be obtained by underground mining methods. After observing and evaluating surface mining methods employed by other companies, some of which operated on lands of U. S. Steel on a lease basis, we undertook the establishment of a surface mining operation. Our method, as, initiated in the early 50's, remains basically the same today. Variations have come about primarily by equipment modifications. The method consists' of a pioneer cut to establish the coal outcrop, a drill bench for drilling, blasting, and removal of the overburden from the top of the coal. The land is rugged except for the flood plains of some of the larger streams. The mountains have steep slopes, averaging 30 degrees, with relatively sharp ridges and very narrow valleys,. Geologically, the coals_ lie in the Pocahontas formation of the Pottsville group in the Pennsylvanian system. This means that the coals in our area of operation lie at the base of. The coal measures in the Appalachian range. The coal that we have mined is primarily the Pocahontas nos. 3 and 4 seams. We have mined negligible amounts of other seams in the Pocahontas groups above the no. 4 seam. The Pocahontas no. 3 seam, which is the lowest mineable seam geologically in this area, lies anywhere from 700 feet below: the valley floor up to 400 feet above the floor. This is occasioned by the Anticlinal formation which gives us grades Of about 9% at the anticline, decreasing to about 1 to 1-1/2% on the extreme flanks. We have the opportunity to engage in surface mining where the coal seams intercept the surface above the valley floors.

In another paper the writer has described an investigation in which the forms of sulphur in coke were determined and described. Coke was found to contain four characteristic forms of sulphur- namely, ferrous sulphide, sulphates, ad- sorbed free sulphur, and sulphur held in solid solution in the carbon. While the coke is still in the oven, only two forms of sulphur are present namely, the ferrous sulphide and the sulphur in solid solution in the carbon. During the quenching, however, the sulphur of the coke is subjected to considerable oxidation, a portion of the ferrous sulphide being oxidized to free sulphur and sulphates, while the solid solution form remains unchanged. The coke, however, loses no sulphur during this process, since the free sulphur which is formed ie retained by the coke in an adsorbed form. Since this oxidation of the ferrous sulphide took place so easily, an inves- tigation was undertaken to determine whether this property could not be taken ad- vantage of in some industrial process for the desulphurization of coke. Although it is true that such a roasting process would not touch the solid-solution form of sul- phur, still the removal of the ferrous sulphide sulphur would undoubtedly benefit the coke from the standpoint of the metallurgist. This improvement in the coke would result not only from the decrease in total sulphur, but also from the large decrease in the ferrous sulphide, which is responsible for the contamination of the iron in the upper part of the blast-furnace. The de sulphurization of coke by roasting in air it a new idea, but dates back to the earliest days of coke manufacture. In 1871, Philipparts published the results of some work done by him on the de sulphurization of coke by air, as well as a review of the results of earlier investigators. In the se earlier experiments, nothing was known of the forms in which the sulphur existed in the coke, while the temperature measurements were only approximate, so that altogether the results were not very conclusive nor complete. The de sulphurisation figures given by the se early investigators generally showed a low efficiency for the process, but some extraordinary results were claimed by certain inventors. In the light of our new knowledge concerning the coke sulphur, it seemed to be important enough to warrant investigation.

"The process of blending consistent and predictable feed for the roasters is critical for optimizing product quality and controlling production costs. To assist in this process, online PGNAA slurry analyzers have been installed and evaluated at a Sudbury Ontario smelter. They are used to measure 100 % of the full process stream to obtain elemental composition data in real time. This paper explains the application details at Sudbury and the benefits achieved from their full stream, elemental slurry analyzers.INTRODUCTIONSudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO), a Glencore Company, consists of two underground nickel/copper mines in Sudbury, Nickel Rim South and, Fraser, along with the Strathcona mill and the Sudbury smelter. The facilities are spread throughout the 60 kilometer-long, oval-shaped geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin (Figure 1). The company has been mining nickel-copper ores in the Sudbury area since 1929. Nickel and copper are the primary focus of operations at Nickel Rim South and Fraser. Other base metals such as cobalt and precious metals are also produced.The Strathcona Mill receives ore from Nickel Rim South, Fraser, and third-party miners to produce two concentrate streams. One is a nickel-copper concentrate for use by the Sudbury Smelter; the other is a copper concentrate which goes to other Glencore operations for smelting and refining. The Sudbury Smelter converts the mineral concentrate into a high grade matte containing nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group metals. This matte product is shipped to Glencore's Nikkelverk refinery in Norway for further processing. In 2015, the Sudbury INO Smelter completed the first phase of the Process Gas Project (PGP); a series of process changes and capital investments designed to reduce sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions in accordance with Ontario Regulation 194. A critical element of the planned emissions reduction was the elimination of a higher percentage of sulphur contained in input concentrate streams, which can then be captured and converted to sulphuric acid."

Soil-bentonite slurry trench cutoff walls are the most common type of vertical cutoff wall used in the US for seepage control and for passive control of contaminant migration at environmental sites. Design considerations are often limited to constructability considerations and a target hydraulic conductivity. With design-build contracts common, the backfill design is often left to the contractor. As a barrier soil, the hydraulic conductivity of bentonite slurry wall backfill is typically required to be equal to or below 1x10-7cm/s. The importance of stress state upon the hydraulic conductivity as well as the expected stresses are both established in the literature. Grain size distribution of the base soil and bentonite content both affect compressibility and hydraulic conductivity. This paper describes the results of studies undertaken to evaluate the interrelationships between compressibility, hydraulic conductivity, grain size distribution, and bentonite content. Three base soils were used representing a range of soils found on typical construction projects. Using these base soils, mixtures containing a range of dry bentonite contents from 0% to 5% were prepared to a slump consistent with field practice. The compressibility and hydraulic conductivity were measured in consolidometers adapted for falling head permeability tests at the end of each load increment. These experiments yielded the relationship between effective stress and hydraulic conductivity as well as consolidation characteristics including time rate of consolidation and coefficients of compressibility. The experimental results are then used to indirectly evaluate stress development and to assess the time needed for consolidation. The findings show a substantial decrease in hydraulic conductivity as effective stress increases, regardless of base soil type and dry bentonite content, a relative insensitivity of stress development to backfill compressibility, and a wide range of values for coefficient of consolidation depending upon backfill mixture and stress level.

In these times of sharp rivalry, both as to price and quality, among the makers and venders of engineering explosives, it is often desirable to be able to determine the relative energy or value of the various explosives offered for sale, in order to purchase intelligently ; or, having contracted for a large amount of an explosive of a certain standard quality, to be able to ascertain if the manufacturer keeps his product up to the specified standard. The simple and inexpensive apparatus described below was devised by the writer while engaged on the improvement of the Tennessee River, at MuscleShoals, under the direction of' Major W. R. King, U. S. Engineers, in the summer of 1879. It answered the purpose so well that it is thought that a brief account of it may be of interest to other engineers. It consisted, essentially, of an old blacksmith's anvil and a common striking hammer, such as is used for driving rock-drills. The anvil was placed face downward on solid, level ground. In what was then the top of it, a vertical hole, one and one-fourth inch in diameter and about one arid three-fourths inch deep, was made with a ratchetdrill. The surface of the anvil immediately around the drill-hole was made as true and smooth as possible with a file. Next, a new striking-hammer, weighing nine pounds, with a turned and true face, was selected ; and a handle, eleven feet long and about one and a half inches in diameter, was fitted into it so that it

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to discuss, in a general way, the application of geological principles in the exploration for, and development of, deposits of industrial minerals. Mention of geological factors pertaining co specific minerals will be by way of illustration only. Since many prospectors are little acquainted with the geological setting and mode of occurrence of deposits of these minerals, some prospecting possibilities in the field will be pointed out. Geology is a tried and proven tool in the search for and exploitation of metalliferous deposits and of oil and gas fields, but, so far at least as Canada is concerned, only very rarely has a directed, intensive search been made for deposits of industrial minerals. Examples might be cited, however, where, in other countries, such investigations have yielded rich rewards. Thus, development of the vitally important potash deposits of New Mexico was the result of a deliberately planned programme of geological investigation, first by United States Government agencies, and later by private interests. War or the threat of war, or peace-time industrial expansion, can render concentrated exploration for specific minerals desirable or even essential. Such exploration is, primarily, a geological problem. Admittedly, there is in general less scope for the application of geology in the search for, and development of, deposits of industrial minerals than of metalliferous minerals, oil, etc. Where the latter are concerned; the objective of exploration is to find a material that is valuable, within broad limits, no matter where it is located or how it occurs. The unit value of the material is limited only by the amount of the valuable constituent in the formation- its possible upper limit is tremendously high. On the other hand, many industrial minerals constitute in themselves 90 per cent or more of the formation- their amount cannot increase and their unit value is commonly low. Moreover, for commercial exploitation, the deposit must, in general, be reasonably close to markets or to plant or other facilities for processing the raw material, since, owing to its low value, this cannot be transported any great distance. As a consequence, intensive geological search for and investigation of such deposits has been restricted to industrialized areas. Obviously, however, it is good insurance for any operator to understand the geological background of his deposit, particularly in the case of new developments.

Carrapateena is a new underground sublevel cave mine and was officially opened in 2020. It has a mine life of 20 years. Development began in 2016, and with the rare opportunity to start a with a blank canvas and having a long mine life, an effort was made to explore how to incorporate innovative and leading-edge technologies. The Ventilation on Demand (VoD) system was designed with the objective to optimise power consumption and ventilation delivery through the primary and secondary ventilation systems. Primary fans controlled by Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and dualwinding secondary fans with multiple setpoints control the delivery of overall quantity. Automated butterfly dampeners control the regulation of air to individual production crosscuts, and automated louvres control the exhaust quantities from the mining levels. Ultra-sonic flow sensors are installed to measure air quantity and environmental stations are installed to measure air quality. Both are designed to play a key role in control and calibration of the system. It was quickly identified that no one vendor could provide a holistic solution to meet the design requirements. A strategy was derived to use multiple vendors, harnessing the specific strengths of each. A control system has been developed to allow the Site Operations Control Centre (SOCC) to oversee and control real-time delivery of ventilation as required by operations. The first full level installation of the VoD system was completed in September 2020.

"The synthesis of large scorodite particles in non-ferrous metallurgical industries usually requires a high-cost operation involving heating and high-pressure autoclaving. To overcome these obstacles, an atmospheric-pressure process for scorodite synthesis (DMSP®) was developed, in which ferrous ions were oxidized by oxygen gas in the presence of pentavalent arsenic ions. This process gives scorodite of good crystallinity with particle sizes as large as 15-20 µm. The solutions used for scorodite synthesis in the DMSP® are prepared from various residues containing arsenic from non-ferrous smelters. The solutions may be contaminated with Cu, Sb, and Bi, for example, and therefore the effects of such impurities on the formation of crystalline scorodite need to be investigated. In this study, the effects of Cu, Sb, and Bi contaminants on the formation behaviors of scorodite particles in the DMSP® were investigated systematically.INTRODUCTIONThe synthesis of crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) is a suitable method for arsenic (As) stabilization and storage of As-containing by-products such as flue gas dusts in non-ferrous smelters. It is expected that the formation of large, highly-crystalline scorodite particles would be an ideal method for avoiding the release of arsenic to the environment. Generally, autoclave methods under pressurized oxidation conditions at temperatures above 100°C have been used for the formation of arsenic minerals such as scorodite. However, the autoclave method requires sealed vessels that are resistant to high pressure, heat and acids. This process is also unfavorable on account of the high construction expenses, and high running costs as a result of vapor heat loss. Processes for synthesizing scorodite under atmospheric conditions at temperatures below 100°C which do not need an autoclave have therefore been extensively investigated (Demopoulos, Droppert, & VanWeert, 1994; Demopoulos, 1996; Demopoulos, Lagno, Wang, & Singhania, 2003; Droppert, Demopoulos, & Harris, 1996; Filippou & Demopoulos, 1997).Recently, Fujita et al. (Fujita, Taguchi, Abumiya, Matsumoto, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2008a, 2008b, 2009; Fujita, Taguchi, Kubo, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2009; Fujita, Taguchi, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2009) developed a new method for producing large scorodite crystalline particles with improved filtration and washability properties at normal atmospheric pressure and temperatures below 100°C. In the new method, oxygen gas (O2) is blown into solutions containing a high concentration of arsenic ions (As(V)) and ferrous ions (Fe(II)). The Fe(II) ions were subsequently oxidized to ferric ions (Fe(III)), resulting in the formation of large scorodite particles. High supersaturation of solutes such as Fe(III) will result in excessive nucleation, and the formation of poorly crystalline phases. The scorodite formation must therefore be conducted in a manner that avoids the critical supersaturation level being exceeded. It is supposed that the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) by O2 gas in the new method suppressed the supersaturation of Fe(III) during scorodite formation. The low Fe(III) supersaturation resulted in formations of highly crystalline scorodite particles of size of around 20 µm. In June 2008, based on the developed process described above, DOWA began experiments to verify the industrial capability of a plant with a capacity of 30 MT/month of As. It was successfully proven that it is possible to produce crystalline scorodite industrially on a commercial scale. This process was named and trademarked as DMSP® (Kubo, Abumiya, & Matsumoto, 2010)."

The basic part of solar water heaters is the collector and the main functional part of the collector is the absorber layer. In this work, a commercial locally available black painting (PACEN code 10382 colour 890), used for swimming pools solar heating, was modified by adding nano-graphite dispersion. The effect of nano-graphite particles percentage on the spectral absorbance of the material was examined on samples containing two values of 1.5 and 2.5% nano-graphite particles by weight. Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was also used to identify the functional groups in the developed material. A simple experimental setup was designed to evaluate the performance of the developed nanodispersed selective coating polymeric based material, by measuring the increase in temperature of circulating water. "As a part of the FUME research programme being done by the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Association (FFF), the SINTEF Group and NTNU, several measurements towards quantifying the gaseous and solid emissions from the draining of the silicon furnaces for metal have been carried out.Based on the measured size distribution of the formed fume particles and known particle growth theory, an estimate of the growth time for the given particles has been calculated. The formation time for the measured NO amount has also been calculated based on the fume measurements and a thermodynamic model of the furnace gases combusting with air. The two “formation” times are in the same order of magnitude and they are therefore used as parameters in a CFD model, modelling that the formed fume particles are heating up the surrounding air and thereby forming NO according to the Zeldovich mechanism. The measurements show an approximately equal constant NO formation per fume particle. The CFD model shows results in the same order of magnitude, supporting that the particle growth and NO formation happen under near stoichiometric conditions and are controlled by the formation of SiO2 fume.IntroductionNOx is the common notion for the two gases nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) formed during combustion of fuels. WHEN mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time. Manganese steel has been manufactured for about 26 years. .It was first made in a small way in England and subsequently produced in the United States in 1892. At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 lb. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 5 ½ in., which it is possible to treat successfully. The objective of this paper is to examine the operation of high frequency screens in closed circuit grinding, where the outcomes achieved indicate favourable economic gains at the comminution stage and downstream processes, including flotation, dewatering, and filtration operations. The classification process in grinding circuits has been slowly evolving within the last century. The history of classification devices brings to mind rake classifiers and spiral classifiers, which although having higher efficiencies compared to hydrocyclones, were not able to keep pace with the evolution of concentrator equipment treating higher tonnages. This higher tonnage throughput has tended to drive the concept of utilising hydrocyclones as the classification stage in closed grinding circuits. The comminution process is commonly the most energy intensive stage of mineral processing. Researchers have determined that the classification stage in the comminution process has the greatest potential for improvement. This paper is intended to inform mineral process engineers of the benefits that high frequency screens offer over hydrocyclones. This will be done by reviewing the purpose for the evolution of classification in the comminution process, documenting past and recent studies, and explaining the modern technology that is currently available.

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.
