Principal mineral products in the Dominion of Fiji were gold, silver, pit and quarry construction materials, and cement. In the years 1978-79, the combined total value of these commodities accounted for some $15 million,2 or 85% of the total mineral output. Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products increased substantially, but gold and silver output from Fiji's only operating metal mine continued the down-ward trend of recent years. Mineral exploration by several international mining companies as well as by local prospectors was being carried out over much of Fiji, and a number of interesting prospects were discovered. One of these, a medium-size porphyry-copper prospect in the Namosi area of Viti Levu, W88 at a mining feasibility study stage. At Mount Kasi on Vanua Levu, an extensive program of geological sampling and mapping W88 being conducted, and surface sampling and drilling W88 taking place at some base metal prospects in the south-central parts of Viti Levu. Also, high gold values in surface samples were reported at Vuda in western Viti Levu.

Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done ? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on t,his subject, and the results seem to furniih an answer to the question propounded above. Sampling for the U. 8. Geological Survey Coal- Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal, in car-load lots only, would be accepted for testing; also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sample from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N W. Lord of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Samp1ing.—Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations adopted for mine-sampling mas, that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine.

This study aimed to remove the contaminants in quartz sand by using an eco-friendly method and to obtain high-purity quartz. For this purpose, ultrasound-assisted acid leaching was applied. Equal amounts of a mixture of diluted hydrochloric and oxalic acids were used as the solvent. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimizing, modeling, and predicting the experimental parameters. The correlation coefficient ( R2) of the proposed quadratic model for the relationship between iron removal yield and test parameters was calculated as 0.9731 and it was determined that the predicted and actual values were compatible. Finally, optimization experiments were made and optimum experiment conditions were revised and determined as 83.38 °C of leaching temperature, 196.35 min of leaching time, 2.86 M of acid concentration, and 202.24 W of ultrasound power. Under the optimum conditions determined after optimization, the highest yield of iron removal was determined as 95.08%. Under the optimal parameters, the SiO2 content of the concentrates increased from 97.841 to 99.907% and the Fe2O3 content reduced from 0.225 to 0.011%.

"This paper gives a brief description of the occurrence and development of the Needle Mountain mine at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited and describes the trackless mining equipment used in this highly mechanized underground operation.Maintenance of the trackless equipment is considered in detail, with particular emphasis on scheduling and control, examination and inspection. All maintenance is carried out in an underground garage, and the facilities for maintenance and field repairs are also described. Maintenance costs are given for various units and the figures for different types of loading and haulage units are compared to support the trend toward larger units and the increasing use of rubber-tired loaders."

The downstream treatment of chloride leach solutions of WPCB for recovery of base and precious metals by a combination of adsorption and precipitation processes were carried out. A synthetic leach solution (1 M HCl, 116.5 g/L Cl-, 30 g/L Cu2+, 2.5 g/L Fe3+, 5 mg/L Au3+, 10 mg/L Ag+ and 20 mg/L Pd2+), which was prepared based on the composition of the pregnant leach solution obtained in the previous study was used in the tests. The leach solution was initially subjected to activated carbon (AC) adsorption (20 g/L AC, 80°C) in which gold was selectively recovered over silver and palladium i.e., 88% Au recovery at 0.5 h (92% at 3.5 h) compared with only 3-6% for Ag/Pd. Copper and iron were also observed to adsorb on AC as indicated by 1.4% and 17% decline, in their respective concentrations. Following the adsorption and filtration stage, metallic copper was added into the gold-barren solution to allow reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, and to cement Pd on metallic copper. Over the mixing period (1 h), 93% of the Pd was recovered while only 1.4% of silver was cemented onto metallic copper. Subsequently, the leach solution was gradually neutralised by NaOH to pH 4, 7.5 and 9.5 for the precipitation of copper as cuprite (Cu2O). It was found that 41% and 46% of Cu and Ag, respectively, were precipitated at pH 4 at which iron was almost totally (99.8%) removed from solution. Precipitation of copper and silver was increased further at high pHs. At pH 9.5, cumulative recoveries for copper and silver were 91% and 85%, respectively. XRD analysis of the precipitates confirmed the presence of cupric copper oxides/hydroxides and revealed that copper losses occurred at pH 4 was due to the undesired presence of cupric copper in the solution.

The BaZrO3 and CaO-doped BaZrO3 ceramics were fabricated at 1750 °C for melting the Ti2Ni alloys, respectively. Employing XRD, OM and SEM, the influence of CaO on the composition of BaZrO3 and the interaction between the BaZrO3 ceramic and titanium alloy was investigated. The results showed that the CaO doped BaZrO3 was consisted of CaO and Ba 1−xCaxZrO3. The grain on the surface of BaZrO3 ceramic was loose after melting, and the thermodynamic analysis indicated that the dissolution-erosion was responsible for the interaction mechanism. An amount of BaZrO 3 refractory was attached to the Ti2Ni alloy bottom after the alloy was cooled. However, no refractory was found on the bottom of Ti2Ni alloy, which was cooled down on the CaO doped BaZrO3 ceramic. CaO additive can effectively reduce the interaction between the BaZrO3 refractory and the titanium melt, indicating that it was a very promising refractory for preparing the titanium alloy.

"Under high stress conditions, rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events are common phenomena that occur around underground openings. In general, together these three phenomena represent brittle failures of an intact rock mass; however, individually they reflect different failure modes under high stresses. After analyzing and comparing the stress-to-strength criteria for rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events, proposed by previous researchers, it is found that these brittle failure phenomena share common stress-to-strength prerequisite. The stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures can be defined by the ratio of the maximum tangential stress around an underground opening to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (s?max/sci) or by the ratio of the maximum far-field principal stress to the UCS (s1/sci). Both these indicators can be used to reflect the same stress preconditions. For s?max/sci, a ratio of 0.4±0.1 represents the critical stress requirement for brittle fracture. However, for s1/sci, a ratio of 0.15±0.05 should be considered as the critical stress requirement. Numerous engineering case studies and analysis of rock mechanics based on the Hoek-Brown criterion also verify these two stress-to-strength preconditions. Here, these two indicators are presented with an error range because complex rock mass quality ratings, lithology, and geotechnical conditions have profound impacts on the stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures. INTRODUCTIONHigh stresses are one of the most important factors that must be considered when undertaking underground rock mass projects (Kaiser et al., 1998). Wang et al. (2009) reviewed current progress in the evaluation of high stresses and their corresponding criteria. However, after clarifying the definition of high stress, civil engineers need to understand the deformation and failure behaviors of rock mass around an opening under high stresses. Under high stress conditions, the deformation of rock masses around an opening can be categorized into two groups, i.e., severe brittle failures (or rock bursts) and compressional plastic deformation of the surrounding rock mass, as indicated in Figure 1."

"The processes for rare earth (RE) extraction include the decomposition of RE ore concentrate minerals, and the concurrent or subsequent leaching of the rare earth elements (REEs) from the decomposed minerals. Ore beneficiation concentrate can be decomposed by, for example, acid roasting, caustic cracking, and chlorination. The REEs can be selectively extracted. The nature of the REE extraction process depends on the concentrate mineralogy and the targeted products. Based on the experience of the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) in RE processing, this paper reviews REE extraction from the major RE minerals, including bastnaesite, monazite, xenotime, ion-adsorption clay, allanite, cerite, and eudialyte. An update on the development of RE extraction processes is also provided.INTRODUCTIONRE processing usually involves two operation stages, physical processing and chemical processing. Physical processing, also known as ore beneficiation, separates the RE minerals from gangue minerals to produce an RE mineral concentrate. Chemical processing, which includes extraction and separation processes, converts the RE mineral concentrate to an RE compound which is either an end product or an intermediate product for the subsequent production of individual REEs or other compounds. The RE extraction process uses one or more reagents to decompose the RE minerals and to leach the REEs into solution. The RE separation process uses solvent extraction, ion-exchange, or chemical precipitation to produce either rare earth oxides (REOs) or individual REEs. The authors have previously reviewed RE ore beneficiation processes (Zhang & Edwards, 2012). This paper focuses on extraction processes for a variety of RE minerals. Table 1 gives the chemical compositions of the RE minerals mentioned in this paper. The varieties of RE extraction methods use many different reagents. These reagents are mainly inorganic acids, alkalis, salts, and chlorine gas. The commonly used acids include sulfuric acid (H2SO4), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and nitric acid (HNO3). Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) are the most common alkalis. Salts include ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4), ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), and sodium chloride (NaCl). HCl is normally used to extract RE from silicate ore minerals such as allanite and gadolinite. The alkalis and H2SO4 are mainly used to leach REs from phosphate ores minerals like monazite and xenotime. The carbonate ore RE minerals such as bastnaesite can be treated using either acids or alkalis. HNO3 is mainly used to leach eudialyte and apatite. The extraction of REs from ionadsorption clay deposits uses salt solutions. Chlorine gas (Cl2) is exclusively used in the RE chlorination process which can be used to treat any RE minerals."

The recently opened Hera Au-Pb-Zn-Ag mine in central New South Wales has provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the calculation of sulfide ore mineralogy using normative methods. Normative mineralogy applies a set of sequential rules based on the species likely to be present to assign the chemical components of a sample to their respective mineral components. The dominant sulfide mineral assemblage present at Hera is galena, iron-bearing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. A normative technique for estimating the relative abundance of each of these species from drill hole, grade control and metallurgical assay data sets has been developed. This includes a process for deriving a gangue iron value and differentiating pyrrhotite from pyrite using sulfur/iron ratios. A calculated total sulfide volume value has been utilised at the mine to improve interpretation of lode boundaries. Normative drill hole values have also been used for domaining within the orebody, with large scale mineralogical trends evident. Dry bulk density (BD) values calculated using a normative species-weighted method show good correlation with measured BD values (R2 = 0.895) and are a significant improvement on the Pb+Zn+Cu regression method (R2 = 0.646) previously used. Application of these calculations to identify errors in assay databases is demonstrated, with specific reference to the data set for the nearby Nymagee copper deposit. Validation of block model grades is also explored and a method to improve resource estimates using direct normative mineral interpolation is proposed. The integration of the normative data into the production and metallurgical data sets at Hera is described and the relationship of the normative minerals to other economic elements such as gold and silver is discussed.CITATION:McKinnon, A R, 2017. High-purity vanadium metal was prepared by electrorefining commercial vanadium in a molten sodium bromide, potassium bromide, and vanadium dibromide electrolyte. Variables investigated were operating temperature, current densities, electrolyte composition, and condition of the anode. The purity of the refined metal was in the range of 99.95 percent vana-dium. Iron and oxygen in the 50- to 250-ppm range were the only major impurities. Metal with hardness numbers of 50 to 60 in the Rockwell F scale was prepared from feed material with a Rockwell B hardness of 90. The arc-melted metal was highly ductile and could be cold-worked into sheet or foil.

Modern steelmaking is based on direct use of oxygen in high intensity batch reactors. A totally new approach is proposed in this paper, based on the view that pursuit of high intensity is unlikely to lead to successful coal-based continuous steelmaking. By substituting carbon dioxide and water vapor as the oxidants rather than using oxygen directly, the intensity is greatly reduced. Accordingly, subsurface formation of carbon monoxide bubbles can be avoided by careful manipulation of the three participating rate processes, gaseous diffusion, interfacial chemical kinetics and liquid phase mass transfer. Steelmaking can then be carried out without explosive ejection of molten droplets and the generation of micro-spray but rather in a controlled and fume less fashion. The vital component is the introduction of generic melt circulation technology. Three melt circulation loops in series are envisaged. Starting with a composite feed of iron ore fines, pulverized coal and lime flux, a metallized solid raft floating on molten iron is propelled out of the ironmaking loop onto the first of two downstream steelmaking loops. In the first, a liquid slag is formed, primary decarburization is undertaken not with oxygen but rather with CO2 and H2O and the melt is desulfurized. The semi-product stream enters the third melt circulation loop, where open-channel decarburization is effected along with dephosphorization to yield a low carbon steel product. Alternatively, the melt leaves the last loop to irrigate a packed tower countercurrent to argon at around 100 mbar to continuously produce ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel.

"Hydrochloric acid (HCl), although more expensive than sulfuric, find uses as a leaching agent in reactions involving iron oxide. The reason for this substitution was the discovery that oxyhydrolysis of ferrous chloride by which HCl can be recycled economically. This avoided the pollution of the environment by ferrous sulfate. It was found further that the rate of leaching of sulfides is faster when HCl is used as compared with sulfuric apparently due to the formation of aqueous chlorine. In case of refractory gold ores, HCl leaching under pressure avoids the use of cyanide solution since gold chloride is produced which can be recovered by standard methods. Hydrochloric acid find also uses in the leaching of scheelite and apatite but its use in leaching clay and anorthosite is questionable.INTRODUCTION Sulfuric acid is the cheapest acid and is used as a leaching agent in many hydrometallurgical processes. However, hydrochloric acid (HCl), although more expensive since it is prepared by reaction of sulfuric with sodium chloride, has replaced sulfuric acid in many reactions involving iron oxide. It replaced sulfuric acid for the first time in 1960s in pickling of steel because of pollution problems (Habashi, 2000). Ferrous chloride produced in pickling can be economically decomposed to ferric oxide and HCl according to:2FeCl2 + 2H2O + 1/2O2 ? Fe2O3 + 4HCl (1)which also shows that the acid can be regenerated but ferrous sulfate cannot be economically decomposed to recover sulfuric acid for recycle. Since then, HCl has been used in many leaching processes. Hydrochloric acid is a corrosive acid and is usually handled in rubber-lined equipment. REGENERATION OF HYDROCHLORIC ACID Regeneration of HCl is conducted in fluidized bed or in spray roaster Fluidized bed oxyhydrolysis In a fluidized bed, ferrous chloride solution is introduced onto a bed of hot ferric oxide where heating is provided by the hot fluidizing combustion gases (Figure 1). The solution is fed on top of the bed of oxides. The liquid feed wets the outer layer of the hot oxide particles and is quickly evaporated to form a layer of new solid oxide on top of the existing oxide, thereby producing dense homogeneous particles."

"This report describes the trend of developments in electric brass-furnace practice in the last two years, and supplements Bureau of Mines Bulletin 202, ""Electric Brass-Furnace Practice"", which was published in 1922. In that bulletin it -as pointed out that some of the lines on which electric brass-furnace progress would take place were clear, but others were less so.Developments in foreign countries.Foreign brass-melters have not yet adopted electric melting to an extent comparable to its use in the United States. It is doubtful Whether all foreign countries combined use 100 electric brass furnaces; of these about 35 are of American make (Ajax, Detroit, Baily) and are operating in Canada, Mexico, England, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Germany, Argentina and Czecho-Slovakia.`The Rennerfelt furnace finds some use in Sweden (1)c, notwithstanding its high metal loss on alloys high in zinc, Two German firms are reported(2) to be using the Rochling-Rodenhauser induction furnace on bronze, the average energy consumption being given as 400 kw.-h. per ton. No comment is made on any trouble from the ""pinch effect"", A firm in Switzerland is reported (3) to use three 600-lb., direct-arc furnaces of its own design to melt babbitt, antimonial lead, coinage silver, nickel, copper, and brass. The metal loss on yellow-brass turnings is high. Use Of a direct-arc furnace in England, with precautions aimed to prevent surface overheating, vas abandoned (4) in favor of an Ajax furnace."

E. H. D. Carman: The results achieved at Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company Limited are very encouraging and it seems certain that as far as the conventional uranium recovery process is concerned solvent extraction must entirely supplant the old resin ion exchange process. The operational costs given by Mr Meyburgh indicate that the chief cost items in solvent extraction are reagents. In other words 38.4 per cent of the operational cost at Buffelsfontein is due to the replacement of the organics lost from the plant. It is reported from a wide field of experience that loss, particularly of amine, is a direct function both of the quantity and nature of finely divided suspended solids in the pregnant solution and the extent to which the design of the mixers causes the formation of secondary dispersions which do not easily separate in the settler. There is in addition the unavoidable loss of amine due to its solubility in the aqueous solution which is thought to be about 4 p.p.m. In order to minimise solvent losses therefore, efficient clarification at the head of the solvent extraction plant would appear to be a most important requirement. For this reason the newly erected plant at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited has two Funda Pressure Filters each with a filtering area of 540 sq. ft. which are together designed to handle up to 440 g.p.m. of filtrate. This plant has not yet been commissioned but preliminary testing indicates that suspended solids in the sub micron size range which do not settle even on protracted standing of the solution, will rapidly blind the clarifiers. This should not affect solution clarity but frequent backwashing adds to the cost of precoating. The difficulty was countered in the laboratory with continuous additions of filter aid in addition to the precoat but, as Table 11shows, cost of filter aid is high and its use will have to be optimized against organic losses due to less efficient clarification. This will need much careful observation over a relatively long period of time. Costs shown in Table 11 are based on Mr Meyburgh's figures adjusted to probable conditions at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited. The assumption based on small scale testing is that it will cost 5.2c/ton in filter aid to clarify filtrate to a level of about 5 p.p.m. of suspended solids, in order to restrict the amine loss to 10 p.p.m. which is likely to be equivalent to an entrained organic loss worth approximately only 2.6 cents per ton. Of course poor clarification as mentioned earlier is only one of two or even more causes of organic losses and it seems obvious on the above basis that the operation and economics of pressure clarification will need close investigation. A second important consideration at West Driefontein has been the design of the pump-mixers which must perform the dual function of phase mixing and providing the necessary hydraulic gradient for counter current flow of the two phases. The arrangement is shown in Fig. 1.

In the United States, improvements in methods of combustion have made possible the use of the smaller sizes of anthracite. This coal is now being reclaimed from the culm banks accumulated by the miners in the more prodigal years. To-day the freshly mined "slush" is segrega,ted and stored against the time when, through briquetting or some other means, it may be utilized as a commercial fuel. For many years Europe has achieved enviable results in the conservation of her small coal by briquetting. This profitable industry, first placed on a commercial basis in France in 1842, has grown to such magnitude that the production during 1913 exceeded 36,000,000 short tons. Briquets produced in Great Britain are used principally for steam purposes and the greater part of the output is either exported or taken by the Admiralty. On the Continent the briquets are sold in all branches of the coal trade. The French railways consume from 16 to 40 per cent. of their fuel in briquet form, and in Germany the lignite briquets (of which 20,000,000 tons were produced in 1913) are as familiar and interesting to the American traveler as the huge porcelain stoves in which they are burned. It is not strange, therefore, that aggressive and far-sighted promoters heralded this means of converting our ubiquitous coal waste into revenue. To the superficial student the briquetting process seemed so simple as to make success easy. It is for this reason principally that the path of the industry in America has been strewn with failures. The rash enthusiast had either not worked out the mechanical problems involved or had failed to grasp the local conditions under which the briquets must be made and sold. It may be confidently stated, however, that in spite of the many vicissitudes through which it has passed, coal briquetting is now an accomplished economic success in this country, and as a profitable adjunct to the coal industry it has come to stay. Several valuable contributions relating to coal briquetting are found in the Transactions. Charles Dorrance, Jr., has sketched briefly the history of the anthracite briquetting plants from the time of Loiseau's pioneer plant down to that of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. at Lans-ford. The missing link is a connector between the congested downtown area of Knoxville, Tennessee adjacent to the former World's Fair site, the I_40 I_75, and Western Avenue traffic arteries. This connecter was designed to accommodate the 37,470 motorists who presently travel through these highly congested narrow paths to be replaced by the 21.8 million dollar Henely Street Connecter. All construction and blasting was to take place while existing traffic was re_routed so as to allow access between the downtown area and the vital interstate corridor. To avoid major traffic problems, the project was to be accomplished in three phases: (1) the Western Avenue viaduct demolition; (2) two new viaducts to be constructed; (3) the open box cut at Henely Street next to the L & N Depot. Due to the past attempts by the Fort Sanders Community Home Owners group and the Historical Society to stop the Henely Street Connector, this project involved a very comprehensive blasting damage control program with special provisions of .5 inches per second measured at the foundation of the closest structure.

This work aims to study the influence of the nanoclay Cloisite 20A incorporation on mechanical properties of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). The incorporation of Cloisite 20A was made in two steps; firstly,a masterbatch was preparated and then, it was incorporated in ABS. The Cloisite 20A masterbatch using 40 % of nanoclay and 60 % of SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile) was prepared in an adiabatic mill. After that, Cloisite 20A masterbarch at 1 and 5 % (wt) was added in ABS. The resulting nanocomposites were characterized by tensile tests and the correlation between properties was discussed.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industry despite 25 years of regulation. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. In order to reduce cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) in the mining industry, retrofit acoustic treatments and controls are being developed to subdue noise at the source. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2005 has determined that continuous mining machines rank first among all mining equipment whose operators exceed 100% noise dosage. The continuous mining machine conveyor, used to move coal from the cutting face to the rear of the machine, has been identified as a dominant noise source. A dual sprocket conveyor chain was tested as a potential solution. Sound power level measurements conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) accredited reverberation chamber showed a 3 dB reduction in the A-weighted sound power level when the dual sprocket chain was implemented. Underground results show an 8-hour Time Weighted Average (TWA8 hrs) reduction a 3 dB for continuous mining machine operators. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, provides continuous mining machine operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).
