The dimensions and shapes of mine structures may at present be determined by (1) field experience, (2) structural calculations, and (3) barodynamic tests. § None of these, however, provide information as to the stresses, their direction and distribution in a mine structure. For the design of pillars, the placing of openings relative to working places such as gangways, haulage levels, etc., this information is desirable. Photoelastic methods provide this and, while relatively new, their application in all engineering fields is assuming increasing importance. This paper, therefore, will present the method with a few applications to mining, and with sufficient reference for further study by the reader. PART I The Photoelastic Method The photoelastic method of stress measurement determines the stress distribution in a two-dimensional model by optical means. It makes use of the fact that when a piece of isotropic transparent material, such as glass, celluloid, or Bakelite, is stressed and viewed in polarized** light a picture is seen which indicates by its color bands of light, or fringes, the magnitude of the stresses, their direction and their distribution. General Explanation The stress at any point 0 in a structure (Fig. I), may be resolved into two components, P and Q, each a pure tension or compression, at right angles to each other, called principal stresses.' To fully identify the stress, the values of P and Q and their directions or angle F must be known.

Recent work on computerised mineral resource databases at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited has concentrated on the development of the GERM, REGCHEM, and MINLIT databases, and their integration in a Geographic Information System using MapInfo software on an IBM-compatible microcomputer local area network. GERM (GEological Resource Map) is a mineral deposit inventory with national coverage and more than 10 300 entries. REGCHEM (REGional Exploration GeoCHEMistry) is a database of stream sediment analyses from open-file mining company reports, containing more than 14 000 sample sites from the Coromandel and west Nelson regions. MINLIT (MINeral LITerature bibliography) is an annotated bibliography of literature on topics relating to the exploration and geology of mineral deposits in New Zealand, and includes more than 5000 entries for published books and papers, and unpublished mining company reports, university theses, and government reports. Master sets of GERM and MINLIT continue to be maintained on a VAX mainframe network but REGCHEM is operated only in the PC environment using the Microsoft ACCESS database management system software.

Two important parameters for dynamic recrystallization can be derived from the changes in the strain hardening rate: the critical strain for initiation of dynamic recrystallization and the point of maximum softening. In this work, these values are determined from the flow stress-strain data obtained in continuous compression testing in the range 900-1100°C. The resulting strains are used to calculate a kinetic model of dynamic recrystallization for two materials: 304 austenitic stainless steel and a hypereutectoid plain carbon steel. The mechanical parameters used to define the proposed model are confirmed with quantitative metallographic analysis of the recrystallized microstructure.

BECAUSE of their layerlike structure, zinc crystals exhibit strong anisotropies for almost all physical and chemical properties. This should, and indeed does, greatly influence the plasticity of zinc for various crystal orientations. At low temperatures, the investigator of this plastic anisotropy is plagued by the great variety of deformation modes that operate. However, at high temperatures (250° to 419°C) only two deformation modes predominate: basal (0001) and prismatic (1010) glide. Furthermore, since strain hardening is virtually absent at high temperatures, the plasticity for these two modes of deformation can be very simply described by means of two equations of state. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the experimental behavior of basal and prismatic glide in zinc crystals, and to interpret this behavior in terms of other physical properties (in particular, the thermal expansion coefficients and the elastic constants) using the theory of dislocations. Fig. 1 defines the two planes of the zinc structure that will be discussed. Glide occurs very readily on the basal planes at all temperatures, and there is a very large literature on this subject. Much of the literature has been reviewed by Schmid and Boas;' it will not be reviewed here. Kolesnikovl was the first to show that if basal glide is circumvented by stressing a zinc crystal parallel to the basal planes (giving zero shear-stress on the basal planes) then, at temperatures above about 320°C, glide on the first-order prism planes occurs. His results have recently been confirmed by Cahn, Bear, and Bell." These previous workers have established the existence and crystallographic elements of prismatic glide; the present paper is concerned with the stress, strain rate, and temperature relations of prismatic glide as contrasted with basal glide. Experimental Methods The crystals were square ones, 6x6 mm, that had been grown in precision Pyrex tubes by a method that is described in detail elsewhere.' Most of the crystals were 99.999+ pct Zn (New Jersey Zinc Co. CP grade). Some were alloyed with 0.1 -+-0.005 atomic pct Cd, and chemical analysis showed that almost all of the added cadmium persisted through the crystal-growing process. For measurements of nonbasal glide, crystals were oriented with their basal planes parallel to both the rod axis and one of the flat faces of the square cross section. However, the orientation of the close-packed directions [1210] with respect to the rod-axis was variable. For basal glide measurements, the angle between the basal plane and the specimen axis was 35". The orientations were measured by the Gren-inger back-reflection X-ray method. The problem of finding a suitable method of gripping the crystals was the most serious experimental obstacle that arose. Because of the large plastic anisotropy of zinc, the usual gripping methods were unsatisfactory. Some methods that were tried were: high melting-point solder, making heads on the ends by locally melting a crystal, and electroplating nickel on the ends to form enlarged portions. For all these methods, the regions of the grips were weaker than the crystals themselves. Finally, two methods were decided upon: bend tests and direct machining of tensile specimens. In the bend tests, specimens were loaded as simple beams so that gripping was not a problem. The beams were 1 in. long and the axis of bending was parallel to the hexagonal axis of the crystals. For the crystals that were machined into tensile specimens, brass bars with slots in them were used to support the crystals, and thereby minimize the distortions due to machining. The crystals were glued into the brass bars with plastic cement which was later dissolved away with acetone. See Fig. 2, left. No clamps were used near the crystals and the machining was done using a milling machine with a fly-cutter. The tool bit was very sharply pointed to minimize burnishing. The feed was less than 1 mil per cut. The depth of cut was 2 mil for roughing cuts, and % mil for the finishing cuts. This machining method produced surface layers of tiny recrys-tallized grains only 2 to 3 mil deep, and the bodies of the crystals were not measurably disturbed. After the crystals had been machined and removed from the brass holders, they were chemically polished until about 5 mil had been removed from all their surfaces. The polishing reagent consisted of equal parts of concentrated HNO,, 30 pct H3O and ethyl alcohol; it is described in detail elsewhere." A typical crystal is shown in Fig. 2, right. The I-shaped faces are normal to the hexagonal axis of the crystal; otherwise the projections at the ends would simply shear off when the crystal was loaded. Fibered, portland-cement-based gunite products were applied in the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine using a variety of pneumatic guns and gunning crews, The demonstrated wet-mix (with silica fume), dry-mix, and surface bonding products were sampled by the Bureau and subjected to a suite of engineering analyses. Gunite flexural and compressive strength, rebound, permeability, porosity, dust loading, shooting rate, crew requirements, and cost factors were evaluated. Steel, fiberglass, or polypropylene fibers were contained in all but two of the gunires tested. Both Bureau and private testing laboratory analyses are provided for some products. Electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed on the silica fume fraction of the wet-mix gunite to characterize the dust. Aggregate size fraction distribution analyses were performed to provide strength relationships. Results indicate that all of the commercially available fibered-gunite materials tested can provide beneficial sealant, spall prevention, or roof stability control attributes for underground mining environments when applied by an experienced crew using a well-maintained gun, in accordance with product manufacturers' recommendations and when used for the designated purpose.

WET-PROCESS coal-washing tables as we know them today have been in use in this country for approximately 25 years. The literature records only a few table installations worthy of note prior to adoption of the present-day differential-motion table. According to Phillips,' six Campbell bumping tables were being operated by the St. Bernard Coal Co., Earlington, Ky., in 1893. As late as 1923, according to Richardson, 72 such tables were in operation in the Rosedale washery of the Cambria Steel Co., at Johnstown, Pa. Bumping tables probably were not used to any considerable extent except in the plant at Earlington, and at two or three plants in Pennsylvania, but they may be considered as forerunners of the present-day coal-washing table. The transition from bumping tables to the type of tables now in use signalized a revolutionary change iii table design. The advantages of the new design over the old were so outstanding as to make its adoption inevitable. BUMPING TABLES Bumping tables, as the name implies, utilized a bumping action for conveying the refuse and discharging it over the refuse end. The tables were hung from rods attached to overhead supporting beams. A shaft and cam arrangement at one end of the table served as ,the actuating mechanism and imparted to the table an endwise, back-and-forth, swinging motion. A bumping block was fixed in the proper position at the shaft end, so that the table would strike against it at the end of each backward swing. The hanger rods or stirrups were so adjusted as to give the table a slight uphill slope toward the refuse end; that is, the end next to the driving mechanism. The feed box was near the upper end of the table and designed to spread the mixture of coal and water over the width of the table. Wash water was added a short distance below the feed box. With the table in motion and coal mixed with water being fed to it through the feed box, a certain amount of stratification took place, depositing heavy refuse at the bottom of the bed in contact with the surface of the table. Accurate prediction of the partition coefficients in coal gravity separation is key to improving the preparation efficiency of coal and promoting its clean utilization. In China, the approximate formula method (AFM) has been applied to the calculation of coal gravity separation partition coefficients for decades, but its accuracy is limited. To improve the accuracy of the predicted partition coefficients, and thus the product yield of coal preparation plants, the present study proposes a modified hyperbolic tangent model to derive direct calculation formulas for the heavy medium and water medium separation partition coefficients. Four groups of coal samples were used to verify the accuracy of the direct formulas, and their predictions were compared with those of the AFM. The results showed that the partition coefficients and partition curves predicted by the direct formulas were closer to the actual values than those predicted by the AFM. Further, when the cleaned coal ash content was basically the same, the cleaned coal yield predicted by the direct formula was lower than that predicted by the AFM, and was also closer to the actual value. These results demonstrate that the direct formula produces more accurate results compared to the conventional AFM. As this formula has a reasonable theoretical basis, is simple to apply, and produces accurate results, it is expected to help improve the design and management level of coal preparation plants.

"Dedicated to Professor Kurt Leschonski on the occasion of his 60th birthdayAbstractThe kinetics of batch grinding quartz from a feed of 600 by 425 Jim to a product of 80% less than 10 µm have been determined using screening and laser diffractometer sizing for size analysis. The specific rates of breakage decreased by a factor of about three when the material became less than about 100 µm in size, but the primary breakage distribution function also changed to give proponionately more fine material, so that the grinding efficiency expressed as the development of surface area (B.E:T.) per unit of energy input did not decrease. Analysis of the shape of the particles in the 2S x 38 µm size range showed that particles of this size produced by roll crushing or by 8 minutes of grinding of a 42S x 600 µm feed were not different but at long grinding times the particles were rounded. This suggests that the breakage mechanism changes to give more chipping and abrasion and less disintegrative fracture. As the material approached the ultrafine size range it adhered to the mill case and there was no further size reduction. However, a technique for striking the mill case to dislodge the particles was successful in allowing further grinding to 400Jo by weight less than 2 µm.1 IntroductionIt has long been known that it is difficult to accomplish ultrafme grinding in a tumbling ball mill. It has been reported [12, 13] that there is no further size reduction after some hours of grinding cement clinker in laboratory ball mills. Austin and Bagga (1] and Shah and Austin [16] have given an analysis of the kinetics of dry grinding in a laboratory ball mill, introducing the concept of a slowing-down factor K, which is the ratio of the specific rates of breakage at some long time of grinding to the normal specific rates of breakage. They showed that this factor decreased as fine material accumulated in the mill charge. Cottaar and co-workers [8-10] showed that the movement of solid in a dry laboratory ball mill was influenced by the fineness of the solid and by the presence of air, and that evacuation of air from the mill caused particle sedimentation and low rates of breakage.The concept of the slowing-down factor has also been used in wet grinding [17, 18]. At very .high slurry concentrations it appears to be correlated with a steady decrease of mill power caused by the build up of a layer of deposit sticking to the mill case. This reduces the effective mill diameter and, eventually, the balls start to adhere in the layer and centrifuge. A decrease of mill power always indicates less lifting and tumbling of the media and, hence, less breakage. However, slowing-down of breakage rates was also observed at lower slurry concentrations where there was no change in mill power."

The RC Harris Filtration Plant, which treats the majority of the fresh water for over 2.5 million Torontonians, is a Canadian Architectural Heritage site demonstrating a classic example of Art Deco Architecture. The facility is undergoing an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability. Perched atop a bluff on the North shore of Lake Ontario the structure enjoys a commanding presence on the Lake Ontario shoreline. A series of underground tanks were proposed for the hillside below the structure, which when covered would preserve the building?s architectural presence. However, the plan required two, stepped excavations 12 m and 10m deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts. Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the front footing of the existing structure at 4 mm, (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Analysis indicated installation effects and overall elastic movement of the soil mass beneath the building would result in movements of 7 to 9 mm at the structure. Through extensive FLAC analysis and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept. Based upon the analysis the design-build team negotiated a new deflection criteria dictating a maximum of 2.0 mm of movement across the critical expansion joint between the Filter Building front footing and the tank slab beyond. The contractor invested in additional pre tender soils investigation to support the refined design process. The FLAC analyses indicated the Filter Building movements would be elastic and distributed up to 50 m back beneath the front footing of the structure. An extensive precision monitoring program proved construction related movements of 6 to 10 mm horizontal at the front footing. Extensometers placed at two locations over the critical interior tank expansion joint showed no measurable movements. The overall monitoring program, including inclinometers, tilt meters, tie back extensometers (smart cables) and tie back load cells indicated a good match between recorded movements and loads and those predicted by FLAC Analysis.

A prototype EM Location System was fabricated and tested at the Geneva Mine near Dragerton, Utah. This system consisted of six manpack transmitters and six manpack receivers covering the frequency band from 900 Hz to 2900 Hz as well as a six channel receiver designed for use in a helicopter. Tests showed that EM signals from lightweight (314 lb) transmitters could be detected both on the surface and from a helicopter through -2 as much as 1650 ft of relatively high conductivity (2 X 10 mhos/m) over- burden. Furthermore, the resulting field strength profiles could be used to determine source location to within 150 ft of the actual surveyed location in the mine. Modifications were made to a Monitoring, Locating and Communications System being tested at the Bruceton Mine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These modifications have improved the performance and quality of the paging and voice telephony mode of the system. Subsurface receiver modifications have improved reception of voice downlink signals.

The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of Cu, Ni and other metals of economic interest are common in orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released and become available for incorporat- ion into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S--rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavenges Cu, Ni, etc., from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5.10 per cent S03 is given. Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Pf (Be,Fe)O3) with 5,50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green Tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen. Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.

Mine planning for a new reserve is based on information obtained from exploratory coreholes. A critical component of an exploration program is the geotechnical evaluation. Poor assumptions about roof conditions greatly add to the risks of mining. Rock mechanics testing is central to a geotechnical exploration program. Typically, 3 to 5 uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests are made to characterize a particular roof unit at a given corehole. The average (mean) of these tests is taken as "The UCS" for that location. Isopach contour maps are then used to show spatial trends in roof strength. Two issues are raised by this traditional approach. The first is due to the large variability in UCS values that is typical even within a single unit from a single hole. The average UCS might be higher at Corehole A than it is at Corehole B, but the difference may not be statistically significant. The second issue is whether widely spaced coreholes can identify valid spatial trends in rock strength. The answer depends upon whether rock strength changes over distances that are longer or shorter than the corehole spacing. This is a classical geostatistical problem. While geostatics have been used to investigate many coal quality parameters, they have seldom been used to evaluate rock strength. This paper describes an extensive investigation of these issues conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in collaboration with Peabody Energy. The study employed the Peabody Rock Mechanics Data Base which contains more than 10,000 individual test results. Data from four important roof units were subjected to statistical analysis: ? Brereton Limestone above the Herrin 6 seam (Illinois) ? Turner Mine Shale above the No. 9 Seam (Kentucky) ? Sandstone above the Eagle Coal (West Virginia) ? Shale above the Eagle Coal (West Virginia) The study did not find significant spatial trends in rock strength in any of the cases. Perhaps there are none, or perhaps the exploration coreholes were just too far apart to see them. These results have valuable implications for the design of geotechnical exploration programs.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

"The cut-off grade is one of the important parameters of mining production. Different material cut-off grade is directed to different destinations. Based on reasonable and optimal cut-off grade, long term mining plan and investment decision analysis can be made for mining managers. In view of multiple-metals open-pit, the paper has proposed that multiple-metals cut-off grade optimization model is set using the objective function to maximize net present value (NPV). The method of equivalent coefficient calculation is proposed to convert multi-metals cut-off grade optimization to a single metal cut-off grade optimization. Then the optimization model is applied in a molybdenum and tungsten large open-pit mine in china. The parameters of concentrate price are calculated by PRT in the model and the curve of grade-recovery rate is analyzed and studied according to actual production data. Based on 3D metal deposit model, the distribution of grade-tonnage is analyzed. At final step, an optimal cut-off grade is proposed to guarantee to maximize NPV. The example shows that the model of multiple-metals cut-off grade optimization can provide reasonable analysis for optimal multi-metals cut-off grade and develop optimal production strategies. Introduction Cut-off grade is one of the most important parameters in metal ore mining because of its influence on the overall economic profit of mining production. Along with the development of the mining production, dynamic optimization of cut-off grade is necessary through the analysis of technical economy. It is better to manage the mining production according to the variation of market. The cut-off grade plays an important role in mining production."

China, a globally recognized major mining country, holds one of the largest quantities of tailings pond country in the world. The total number of mines in China has been ranked first in the world. It is a major concern for Chinese safety management to give great importance for tailings pond safety, stability and sustainable development. For the past few years, China has increased efforts to investigate and govern discrete issues of tailings and to carry out a series of special renovation and comprehensive treatment actions to improve safety management levels and to decrease the likelihood of tailings pond accidents. In the end of 2015, China successfully eliminated hazardous tailings ponds and dangerous tailings ponds. Moreover, the total number of tailings decreased from 12,273 to 8,869. However, there are still 1,425 "head-top" tailings that threaten the lower masses’ safety. This greatly signifies the Chinese tailings pond safety, stability as well as sustainable development. In turn, this may improve the Chinese tailings life cycle safety management system and help reach the goal of attaining closed-loop management in the tailings pond life cycle. Based on the summary of the tailings pond accidents in both China and other countries from 1961 to 2015, and by analyzing the types and causes of accident, this paper investigated the successful experiences and effective measurements of British Columbia (Canada) and Australia in the tailings pond life cycle safety management. This paper summed up each country’s tailings life cycle safety management requirements and analysed the characteristics and differences of tailings safety management by comparing 5 aspects: tailings life cycle safety management process, main design parameter, construction requirements, monitoring, and the tailings pond closing management. Based on these observations, this paper suggests some measurements to improve the tailings pond life cycle safety management in China, such as strengthening tailings pond safety management, improving tailings classification, increasing design parameter values, establishing mine reclamation fund, and so on.

A Aceros Arequipa é a maior siderúrgica do Peru. A empresa opera uma planta em Pisco, com uma aciaria para 850.000 t anuais de aço líquido, e uma capacidade de laminação de 1.250.000 t anuais de produtos longos. Um projeto de integração vertical incluindo coqueria non-recovery, sinterização e alto-forno foi considerado. Como parte do projeto, um forno piloto de coqueificação foi instalado, com o intuito de testar carvões próprios e importados e obter a máxima participação de carvão local nas misturas. Foram testados sez carvões peruanos e antracito. Os carvões importados escolhidos foram três da Colômbia e quatro dos Estados Unidos. Levando em conta as baixas propriedades dos carvões próprios, foi introduzida a estampagem da carga. A máxima participação dos carvões locais, mantendo a qualidade requerida, foi obtida com 80% de carvão peruano, e 20% de um carvão columbiano. Pode-se usar até 10% de antracito, junto a 60% de carvão peruano e 30% de carvão colombiano.

"Underground operation ventilation energy requirements constitute a significant portion of mine energy consumption (40–50%) and total energy costs (25–40%). In general, mine ventilation systems are energy inefficient; the author has found several systems that operate at efficiencies below 65%. This paper presents how engineering design principles can improve the performance and efficiency of ventilation appliances, resulting in reduced power consumption and operating costs. Case studies demonstrate that, by retrofitting ventilation appliances using proper engineering concepts, systems will operate at efficiencies well above common operating efficiencies, resulting in a drastic reduction in costs and base electrical and energy loads.RÉSUMÉ Les besoins énergétiques nécessaires à l’aérage d’une exploitation souterraine représentent une part considérable de la consommation d’énergie d’une mine (de 40 à 50 %) ainsi que des coûts totaux liés à l’énergie (de 25 à 40 %). De manière générale, les systèmes d’aérage d’une mine sont loin d’être écoénergétiques ; l’auteur a trouvé plusieurs systèmes fonctionnant à des rendements inférieurs à 65 %. Cet article présente les principes de conception technique qui peuvent améliorer la performance et l’efficacité des systèmes d’aérage, entraînant une réduction de la consommation d’électricité et des coûts d’exploitation. Des études de cas montrent qu’en les rénovant à l’aide de concepts techniques adéquats, les systèmes d’aérage fonctionneront à des rendements bien supérieurs aux rendements habituels d’une exploitation. Ventilation systems normally operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, and account for 25–40% of the total energy costs and 40–50% of the electrical consumption of a mine operation (De Souza, 2013). Attempt was taken in this study to explore the misplacement phenomena in binary mixture in solid-liquid fluidisation system. The binary mixtures of hematite and quartz particles at different sizes were taken. The closed size range particles were taken to minimize the size and shape effect in fluidization. As both the minerals have appreciable density difference, the separation of both minerals with closed size range has an advantage. The experiments were conducted in different permutation and combination of different sizes of binary mixture to observe the fluidization phenomena. The samples were taken at different heights in fluidized zones and analyzed the distribution of particles of both minerals. The fluidization characteristics were evaluated with respect to operating and design parameters. It has been observed that when the terminal velocity of quartz and hematite particles is same or near to each other, then misplacement is significant. In general, the segregation index value is near to one, complete segregation takes place whereas this value is near to zero, complete mixing takes place. The experimental data were used to find out the segregation index for different size ratios of quartz and hematite particles and the values are within 0-1. When the size ratio is 1 or less, complete segregation takes place whereas this ratio is within 1.0-1.4, partial mixing takes place. Similarly, when the size ratio is within 1.4-2.0, complete mixing takes place whereas this ratio is within 2.0-4.6, then it moves towards complete segregation in inversion manner.
