The treatment of slime is of special interest to those engaged in cyaniding gold- and silver-ores. The usual practice is to make as small a percentage of slime as possible. In many instances the slime is given no treatment, but is impounded in dams in the hope that the future will develop some method of economically treating this product. The filter-press was the first step upward from ordinary decantation, but, on account of heavy labor-charge and high cost, its use has been limited to high-grade material. The slime at the Combination mill at Goldfield averages perhaps $20 per ton, and although the values are quickly dis solved the filter-press installation was not entirely satisfactory, resulting in the erection of the canvas-cell filter, developed by Chas. Butters and his staff. This filter is a great improvement over the filter-press, and the following description of it will be of interest to those engaged in treating slime produced in crushing ores, especially in view of the fact that, by the use of this filter, slime can be treated at a lesser cost and with a higher percentage of gold- or silver-extraction than in the ordinary treatment of sand; and, moreover, the initial outlay for an all-sliming plant is less than that for the ordinary sand- and slime-plant. The economy of construction of the Butters filter-plant is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate the 20-frame filter of 40 tons capacity, now being installed by the Nevada Goldfield Reduction Co. In this construction the slime-pump is so connected that it call pump to or from either tank or the filter by changing the valve-settinga—a combination which is necessary in this particular installation, since sufficient fall is not available for filling and discharging the filter by gravity. For its surface features, micro-sized hematite is usually difficult to recover by magnetic separation; especially, the existing high gradient magnetic separator in industry can not utilize collecting matrix with thin silky rods for its property of being easily blocked; the lower size limit for recovery of micro-sized weak magnetic minerals is about 0.019mm, some even is 0.037mm. This paper introduces the application of the combined new technique of water-air joint discharging of concentrate and collecting matrix with different diameter silky rods in the field of recovery of micro-sized hematite by high gradient magnetic separator. The commercial test result for recovery of a certain hematite with size about ?0.037mm shows that the recovery can be promoted by 16.81% with basically same concentrate grade.

NO one who has visited our Western mining districts, and studied the economical part of the beneficiation of the ores occurring all over that vast extent of country, can underrate the high importance of the above subject. By far the larger number of the districts which contain smelting ores, i. e., argentiferous and auriferous lead, or copper ores, are situated in the Great Basin, that great plateau between the Rocky Mountains on the east, and the Sierra Nevada on the west, almost the whole of which is comprised at present in the boundaries of Nevada, Utah, and part of Arizona. This region is essentially a barren country. The extreme dryness of the atmosphere permits but a scanty vegetation in the plains; and even in the detached mountain-chains running through it-generally from N. to S., or from N. W. to S. E.-there are no trees found except dwarfed pines and mahogany, at the head of sheltered ravines, and a few cottonwoods and willows, which fringe the insignificant streams, before the water sinks in the arid plains. Nearly all the mountain-chains in this region are rich in silver ores. That class of these ores which is adapted to amalgamation, and rich in silver, has been worked with profit for more than ten years. But before the advent of the transcontinental railways, mining was restricted to these ores alone, and the consumption f fuel could be met with the scanty supply of forest trees in the immediate vicinity of the mining districts. Since, however, the Union and Central Pacific Railroads have brought the Great Basin nearer to the commercial centres of the East and the Pacific coast, thus reducing the expenses of freight and labor materially, other silver deposits, containing poorer ores in greater abundance, have been rapidly taken

Pelletizing of Indian chromite ores is more challenging due to their high refractory nature. High Cr/Fe ratio and high MgO content in these ores demand high firing temperatures and longer firing cycles but often result in low strength fired pellets. Aim of this study was to develop cold bonded chromite pellets for smelting in submerged arc furnace (SAF) from chromite fines using suitable binder that induce less gangue into the pellets but cures quickly. Different binders were studied through laboratory pelletizing experiments for their suitability for cold bonding the pellets. As result, a composite binder comprising organic and inorganic binding agents was found to be suitable and pellets made from the same were tested for their low and high temperature behavior. High temperature reduction studies revealed that pellets were resistant to disintegration up to 1200 °C.

On exploite le chrysotile dans le sud du Quebec depuis plus de cent ans. Au cours des dernieres decennies, cette variete d'amiante est devenue une des principales substances minerales produites au Quebec. Bien que la production de fibres d'amiante ait diminue de J 365 779 ten /979 a que!que 700 000 ten 1983, le Quebec n'en demeure pas mains une des principa/es sources d'approvisionnement mondial de ce mineral, la valeur des exportations quebecoises ayant ete de l'ordre de 315 millions de dollars en 1983. Dans la presente contribution, nous passons en revue que!ques-unes des notions mineralogiques sur l'amiante, depuis l'etymologie du mot et les proprietes physico-chimiques du mineral, jusqu'd ses principales utilisations commercia/es et industrielles. Un des deux objectifs principaux de noire article est de definir brievement le contexte geologique regional, la lithologie et /'age des roches ultramafiques serpentinisees et de decrire les principales caracteristiques des gftes de chrysotile qu'elles renferment et qui furent exploites a date dans /es Appa/aches du sud quebecois. Nous concluons en dressant un tableau synoptique de la metallogenie et en soulignant le role preponderant qu 'ont joue /es mouvements tectoniques majeurs, a la jonction des plaques et au sein des feuillets et copeaux de la croute oceanique (lithosphere et manteau superieur), sur la genese des gftes de chrysotile dans les roches ultramafiques serpentinisees, et tout particu!ierement dans celles associees aux series ophiolitiques du Paleozaique inf erieur.

SMM operates an original slime treatment process for recovering precious metals and other metals (Te,Se,Sb,Bi)from the copper and the lead anode tankhouse slimes. In recent years, the amount of slimes has increased and the pyrometallurgical processing units capacity became the bottleneck of the entire plants. For the expansion of the plant, new pyrometallurgical facilities, incorporating a BBOC, was commissioned in 1992 and has now been successfully operated. In addition, unit operations were optimized to increase recovery and reduce operating cost .. The results of modifications made in the plant are discussed in this paper.

Although efforts towards producing a `total quality rockfill product' have allowed cemented rockfill costs to be reduced considerably, there is still tremendous potential for further cost reductions. Cemented rockfill costs range from approximately $7 to $12 (US) per tonne of fill placed. Approximately 50 per cent of the rockfill costs are associated with cement costs. A large portion of the remaining 50 per cent is associated with labour and materials handling costs. Several Canadian underground mines utilise haulage trucks and/or conventional belt conveyors to distribute the rockfill. However, due to the restrictive nature of the underground environment, these current materials handling systems have limitations (ie spillage from trucks, dust from conveyors). The Sicon conveyor system (developed in Sweden) has considerable potential for replacing these current methods. The Sicon conveyor utilises a revolutionary approach - the conveyor belt is folded over upon itself (forming a tear drop shape) so that the transported material is completely encased within the belt. The Sicon conveyor's ability to negotiate very tight comers (without transfer points) makes the conveyor very appealing for underground mining applications. An analysis comparing the pros and cons associated with the Sicon conveyor system versus conventional materials handling systems will be presented in this paper.

The concept of æsustainabilityÆ can largely be defined as development that will not compromise the ælivabilityÆ of the planet for future generations. It has multiple dimensions, such as the triple bottom line û environmental, economic and social. And it also includes temporal (now and the future) and spatial (local and global) aspects that have to be taken into consideration to achieve true sustainability.Energy sustainability might be defined as û having the light turn on when you push the switch. It has, of course many more dimensions than this simplistic definition. Coal in Australia has an important role in keeping our lights on, but has its problems that need to be tackled head on to maintain a role in sustainable development.An overriding issue in terms of sustainability for coal is its major contribution to our greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst we have one of the most effective energy sectors in the developed world, based on well-managed, abundant fossil fuels, our greenhouse gas emissions are one of the highest per GDP in the developed world. We have to reduce our ægreenhouse gas signatureÆ.This paper explores the issues of coal utilisation greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator of the fuelÆs sustainability and the potential lower emissions pathways we will have to follow in a future carbon-constrained world.The technology changes will have significant implications for the minerals industry and it is argued that forward-looking coal/greenhouse emissions strategies need to be developed in alliance with the coal (and energy) sector for the minerals industry to maintain its global competitiveness.

In this study the bonding within reduced titanomagnetite-coal compacts was investigated. The aim of the study was to better understand the binding mechanisms in the reduced compacts and, based on this understanding, to improve on their strength.Titanomagnetite ore was combined with sub-bituminous coal to form compacts. The compacts were then reduced by heating in a thermogravimetric furnace (TGA) to temperatures between 1000 - 1300°C under argon. The reaction progress was monitored by measuring the weight loss with time. The reduced compacts were found to have low strength in compression testing. The main form of bonding between the reduced titanomagnetite particles in the compact was by the formation of a slag-like material. Increasing the fi nal reduction temperature was found to have a profound effect on the strength of the compacts by promoting the formation of this slag-like material.Attempts to improve the strength of the compacts were made by changing two variables, the type of coal and the addition of rice husks. The addition of coking coal gave reacted samples that had little strength, while the addition of rice husks may have enhanced the strength of the reduced compacts.

Climate modelling suggests that we are likely to encounter more frequent heatwaves and higher apparent temperature. Does this mean that our teams will be at greater risk of heat stress, and are we prepared to deal with the changes in our future climate and the potential impacts on our working population? This paper will review the recent research on climate and projected changes to all meteorological parameters that are important in understanding the likelihood of heat stress. THIS paper is submitted primarily to put on record the results of a number of experiments carried out at the Wingdam mine of Consolidated Gold Alluvials of B.C., Ltd., with the object of establishing a reliable method of concentration of 'wash' and a maximum recovery of gold from the concentrate. It will be generally admitted that, during the last two decades, a tremendous amount of research work has been carried out, both by private companies and Government departments, with a view to improving the technique of the recovery of gold .from quartz veins or lodes. So thorough have been these investigations that milling practice at a modern quartz gold mine is almost an exact science, carried out with meticulous accuracy. In placer mining, on the other hand, very little departure from old traditional methods can be noted, with the exception perhaps of the more modern gold dredges. This may be due to the fact that the concentration of placer gravels, up to a certain point, is comparatively easy. Only a simple equipment of sluice box and riffies seems necessary where the gold is coarse and the gravel free from clay. In the early days of placer mining, when claims were rich and fairly 5hallow, nobody worried very much about fine gold; and, if clay was present, an enlarged dump box was constructed in which the gravel was subjected to a rather desultory puddling. That large quantities of gold are lost in normal placer practice is generally admitted. Some 26 years ago, I had inspectorial charge of many bucket dredges on the Ovens river, in Australia. Occasionally it was necessary for a dredge to work through its own tailing to reach a new section, and almost without exception enough gold was recovered from these tailings to defray the total cost of moving the dredge. Since those days, the technique of gold recovery in dredging has been considerably improved and it is still receiving close attention. Outside of dredge mining, most placer operations, deep or otherwise, are as they were-notorious gold losers, paying little attention to the recovery of fine gold and taking an absurd amount of time over each clean-up. In the Cariboo district of British Columbia, the alluvial gold is usual y associated with varying quantities of black sand (magnetic) and grey sand (non-magnetic); and it can be taken as axiomatic that, if you save all the black sand and grey sand, you save practically all the gold. It is on this hypothesis that we have carried out our research work and brought our recovery system up to its present highly satisfactory standard.

"The mining industry may have survived the October 28 federal budget relatively unscathed, but the same certainly cannot be said of the petroleum sector-and many mining men are left wondering if their industry will be the next one to be singled out for special attention, as federal and provincial governments seek additional revenues and pursue nationalistic or provincial policies.Higher taxes, higher prices, a potpourri of ""incentives"", and a -""Canadianization"" policy mark the principal features of the new National Energy Program released by the government along with Finance Minister MacEachen's budget address.This month, Tax Notes examines the federal budget. with appropriate emphasis on the National Energy Program and its possible future implications forthe Canadian resource industries.IntroductionMost of the Canadian mining industry (tar sands miners excepted) heaved a sigh of relief on the evening of October 28, 1980, as Finance Minister MacEachen confounded the prophets in his budget address by not raising personal or corporation taxes and by making only relatively modest changes in the general tax system. Instead, he concentrated on a sweeping new energy policy. Unfortunately for that important sector of Canada's mining industry which is involved in mining the country's vast tar sands reserves, either now or in the future, the National Energy Program that was introduced along with the budget 'has serious implications."

About three years ago, the writer presented a paper1 on the rate of heating and cooling of a 24-in. round ingot. The present paper deals with work done on larger ingots at the plant of the Allis Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, Wis., in August, 1919. Sufficient data on ingots of all sizes were desired to enable one to calculate in advance the rate at which any ingot could be raised to a forging temperature without injury to the steel, determining also the temperature gradient between different sections of the ingot and the length of time necessary to heat to the center. This has now been experimentally determined for 24-in. and 45-in. ignots by the writer and for a 18-in. cube by E. F. Law.2 J. F. Harper has also made tests on heat-treating temperatures on 30-in, ingots; which data are included in this paper. No attempt is made here to work out a formula for the heat penetration of steel, for too many factors are involved concerning which we have not sufficient information, as for instance, the specific heat of steel up to 2300' F. It is hoped that eventually a set of formulas will be developed so that one may calculate maximum allowable temperature differences within an ingot for any particular kind of steel and the rate of absorption of heat and temperature gradient within the ingot for a definite temperature head. This paper describing the methods of recovery and treatment of a sand and gravel deposit and the preparation of these materials for a number of special markets is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It is of particular interest to those sand and gravel operators who have a surplus of fine sand which must be sent to waste, both from the point of view of, equipment and the variety. of markets supplied, and in that it describes one of the few sand and gravel plants which have resorted to hydraulic classification for sizing fine sand. "Due to the European Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life-vehicles, from 2015 on more than 95% of car materials have to be recycled. In order to recycle the materials back into the economic cycle, it is necessary to produce products with high quality and purity.Plastic components in cars, which are coated with metals by vapour deposition or electroplating, have a wide circulation (e.g., as cladding panel or trim strip for interiors and exteriors). In the end-of-lifevehicle recycling process, these plastic-metal composites are not considered in usual technologies (car shredder) and are not separated from Automotive Shredder Residue. These parts can be separated by optical or HF-detection sorting and then introduced to a specific treatment.Experiments with a specially developed bioleaching configuration showed that the thin coatings, which consist mainly of copper, nickel and chromium, can be removed efficiently from the polymer base materials by a bioleaching solution with Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans as a leaching agent. The solution used was produced in special fermenters with a 9K-nutrient salt media. During the bioleaching process at 35°C maximum temperature, most of the copper is dissolved and the other metals accumulate as metal sludge. The bacterial cultures based on A. ferrooxidans are robust and resilient.After a 48-hour bioleaching period while the composites were stirred regularly with ventilation, the plastic particles were completely free from metallic coatings. The metal components are separated for further use: undissolved components (mainly Ni and Cr) are separated by decantation of the solution; dissolved copper recovey is carried out by cementation of copper. The cementated solid contains ~98% Cu, along with small amounts of other metals.With the bioleaching process, good separation and re-utilization of the metallic coatings is possible. The cleaned plastic parts were prepared by compounding for new applications with injectionmoulding."

O aumento da razão da carga transportada por eixo tem sido fundamental para redução dos custos do transporte ferroviário, exigindo rodas de maior resistência mecânica, mas com tenacidade assegurada. Uma das estratégias é se adicionar aos aços microadições (< 0,5 % em massa) de nióbio e ou vanádio, os quais, em solução sólida na austenita atrasam sua decomposição em produtos difusionais, elevando a resistência mecânica dos aços. Neste trabalho foram avaliados dois aços com 0,7%C microligados ou não ao nióbio e molibdênio e produzidos pela MWL Brasil para a fabricação de rodas ferroviárias segundo a classe D da AAR (Association of American Railroads). Foram realizados ensaios dilatométricos em regime isotérmico com um dilatômetro Bähr DIL 805A do Laboratório de Transformação de Fases da Escola Politécnica da USP e análises metalográficas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e microscopia ótica. Observaram-se atrasos na cinética de transformação austenita/perlita através da microadição de nióbio e molibdênio na ordem de 4 vezes, uma diminuição do espaçamento interlamelar da perlita transformada a 600ºC da ordem de 15% e um pequeno aumento da dureza dos produtos de reação no aço microligado.

This Bureau of Mines report describes laboratory and field experimentation in building mine ventilation stoppings, air-door frames, and fan bulkheads with a civil construction technique. Shotcrete is applied to a free-standing, three-dimensional wire-truss panel, which is easily cut and rapidly erected. In mines where shotcrete equipment is available, this technique should be faster and cheaper than conventional block-and-mortar or monolithic concrete construction.

The dimensions and shapes of mine structures may at present be determined by (1) field experience, (2) structural calculations, and (3) barodynamic tests. § None of these, however, provide information as to the stresses, their direction and distribution in a mine structure. For the design of pillars, the placing of openings relative to working places such as gangways, haulage levels, etc., this information is desirable. Photoelastic methods provide this and, while relatively new, their application in all engineering fields is assuming increasing importance. This paper, therefore, will present the method with a few applications to mining, and with sufficient reference for further study by the reader. PART I The Photoelastic Method The photoelastic method of stress measurement determines the stress distribution in a two-dimensional model by optical means. It makes use of the fact that when a piece of isotropic transparent material, such as glass, celluloid, or Bakelite, is stressed and viewed in polarized** light a picture is seen which indicates by its color bands of light, or fringes, the magnitude of the stresses, their direction and their distribution. General Explanation The stress at any point 0 in a structure (Fig. I), may be resolved into two components, P and Q, each a pure tension or compression, at right angles to each other, called principal stresses.&apos; To fully identify the stress, the values of P and Q and their directions or angle F must be known.
